Arne Westerman to Teach Workshop in November Virginians with their horses, they are all painted with di-rectness, emotion and move-ment. His paintings have depth, feeling and more than a hint of impressionism.

Paintings by Westerman are in permanent collections of art museums and universities throughout the U.S. His awards include the Jane Peter-son Award from Allied Artists of America in l990 Exhibition, the l989 Watercolor West Exhibition Grand Prize, three

Grand Prizes from the Northwest Watercolor and Midwest Watercolor socie-

ties, as well as numerous other awards including the Salma-gundi and the National Arts Club in New York in l988.

In l994, Arne was invited to join the American Watercolor Society as a signature member becoming one of only three Oregonians to hold this honor. l994 was also the year that Arne's very successful book, PAINT WATERCOLORS FILLED WITH LIFE AND EN-ERGY was published (now sold out and a collectors item). Westerman is a native of Ore-gon, attended Reed College and earned his degree in jour-nalism at the University of Oregon. George Hamilton was his first art teacher along with Sergei Bongardt, David Leffel, Milt Kobayashi and Willam Reese. Arne is now a success-ful teacher traveling nation wide holding watercolor semi-nars. He is also a member of the National, Northwest, and Oregon Watercolor Societies.

"Arne Westerman, A.W.S. signature member is Nationally known for his richly colored watercolors of people from all walks of life. He cap-tures fleeting moments in their interaction as they go about their daily pursuits. Arne does not try to paint pretty people or contrived scenes, but real situations catching the warmth and earthiness of his subjects. Whether ballet dancers, Jewish scholars, street people, New

Pat Dews, a graduate of The Fashion Institute of Tech-nology, New York City, is a signature member of the Ameri-can Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, the National Collage Society and the National Association of Women Artists.

Dews creates experimental works in watermedia on paper

and canvas. She paints the ab-stract essence of nature. The shapes and textures of flowers, rocks, water and crumbled walls are translated into richly layered paint surfaces. Collage is often integrated. Dews skillfully juggles organic and geometric forms, transparent and opaque paint - all held together by a basic ab-stract underlying shape. It is this intricate dance, rendered in strong color and value, which produces her award-winning paintings. When Pat paints, it is a lively, fascinating performance as she shows that, with the sim-plest tools, less can become more, much more.

Pat is an enthusiastic, popular instructor, teaching workshops internationally. She takes great delight in her students' many successes.

Pat is the author of Creative Com-position & Design (The Painter’s Workshop), 2003, and Creative Discoveries in Watermedia, 1998, published by North Light Books. Her work has appeared in nu-merous books and publications. Dews’ video, Designing Great Starts with Texture and Form is available through Cheap Joes.

Pat lives in Hobe Sound, Florida and spends summers in South-old, New York.

Donna Zagotta Workshop Proves Delightful for Participants Twenty

artists from around the state joined Donna Zagotta at a fast-paced and interest-ing SWS workshop in early

September. Concentrating on design -- first in value, then in color -- the class made many studies leading to strong and simplified design. Only then did they render these in a paint-ing. Zagotta, with memberships in both NWS and AWS, is

known for her figure studies that have that "Wow" factor, ren-dered in opaque water-color, often painted on watercolor board.

Students left the three-day workshop with a renewed interest in plan-ning first, then paint-ing. "No more Ready -- Fire -- Aim," said one participant.

SWS has four more work-shops planned for this year and next. Check into these: Miles Batt in October, Arne Westerman in November, Pat Dews in March and Gale Webb in April.
