Fal l Paint-out in Archer City

When and Where The fall paint-out for SWS will be in Archer City (20 miles south of Wichita Falls) from Friday, October 9 through Sunday, October 11. We will stay in the Spur Hotel just off the square and around the corner from the abandoned Royal Theater of Last Picture Show fame. The hotel is within walking distance of All Booked Up, Larry McMurtry's incredible book store that takes up four buildings and contains more than a quarter of a million high quality used books including some very expensive inscribed first editions. What to Paint The Archer County courthouse anchors the town square and is built of local sandstone with carved details. The nearby county jail, also made of sandstone, is the home of the eclectic Archer County Museum housing hundreds of Indian artifacts, fossil bones, and western paraphernalia in addition to antique tractors, oil field equipment and an old hot lead printing press. The picture-making possibilities are limitless. A twenty minute drive to the east brings you to Windthorst, a German farming community boasting a beautiful old church sur-rounded by prosperous dairy farms. Meals Friday night will be a “pot-luck” dinner in the ho-tel. We will assign dishes ahead of time to insure a balanced meal. Saturday morning (and Sunday as well) can be cereal, fresh fruit, eggs, whatever can be prepared in the hotel kitchen. It will be a little more trouble, but less expensive than

eating out. Alternatively, there is convenience store in

town that serves a sit down hot breakfast. Saturday lunch will be on your own, as always. Saturday night will be a barbecue dinner in the

hotel. I checked with a locally run convenience store said by locals to serve good barbecue. Two briskets, enough to feed twenty, will cost around $60. There is a small but well-stocked grocery store where we could buy "the fixin's" (beans, potato salad, green salad veggies, etc.) We will have a BYOB happy hour by the hotel fire-place, hang our show in the lobby, and serve ourselves a barbecue dinner in the hotel dining room. How to Make Reservations Call or email Walt Davis, 903.886.2711, [email protected], to reserve a room. Do not call the hotel. Rooms will be assigned first come, first served. Go to swswatercolor.org for more details on the hotel and accommodations.

I hope you had a great summer and managed to stay cool. Maureen and I pretty much stayed around here and took several local trips. We are going to cover all 180 miles of the old Rt. 66 in Texas, from Oklahoma to New Mexico. We have no schedule, are just going to see what's there and take lots of photographs.

Speaking of getting out, Walt Davis has another great SWS paint-out planned for Archer City. We are essentially taking over the town! The dates are October 9 – 11, more information is in this issue of the Scene. You don't have to be a plein-air painter, you can take reference photos and explore the area. On a personal note, if you are not going to the paint-out, Maureen and I are having an opening Friday, October 9th at the Artists' Showplace. The time is 6 to 9 pm. I'm going to play a few songs with the jazz combo. It will be fun! In addition to our great SWS website, we are know on Facebook. http://www.facebook.com/group.php gid=102388538751&ref=nf. Or just search Facebook for Southwestern Watercolor. I have reconnected with a lot of people since I have been on Facebook. We have a super line up of workshops and demo artists this year. Check out the schedule and sign up for a workshop today! For $60 per day you can study with nationally known artists. If you traveled to Springmaid or other venues it would cost much more. We bring the artists to you! See you at the meeting! joel

November workshop with Sandi D’Allesandro still open.

Sandi D’Alessandro AWS, NWS November 9—11 (3 day) Artists’ Showplace $180 * $205 **

Sandi D’Alessandro works primarily with acrylics. “This medium allows for versatility in creating

textures, transparent and opaque effects, which I scratch and lift off to unveil the images. The painting communicates with my feel-ings and sensitivities. This artistic process encourages play, taking risks and explo-ration as part of the art mak-ing. My goal is to achieve an overall painterly quality that allows the viewer to con-tinue reaching beyond the obvious, to find meaning each time they view the painting.” For more on Sandi visit signature9gallery.com

Skip Lawrence to lead off 2010 with February workshop & demo

Skip Lawrence February 8—12 (5 day) Artists’ Showplace $300* $325**

The Skip Lawrence work-shop will provide a great way for both novice and experi-enced students to improve

upon what they have already learned and take their painting to new heights. Workshops taught by Skip have been known to help students advance to levels of free-dom and expres-sion that they never thought possible. Not simply a "how-to-paint" workshop, his classes help stu-dents paint the way they want to and produce work with real meaning. More information about Skip is available at his website: www.skiplawrence.com

Carrie Burns Brown October work-shop is still available

Carrie Burns Brown NWS October 12—16 (5 day) Artists’ Showplace $300* $325 ** Carrie Burns Brown is one of the rea-sons why collage has regained popularity in recent years. Her work is nature based, rich in texture and displays luscious color harmonies. Carrie brings collage to the

level of fine art. Carrie delights in discovering new combina-tions of materials. If she cannot find what she is looking for, she makes it herself. Carrie's teaching style is logical, sequen-tial and helps students tap into their own design sense and

creativity. For more on Carrie visit ccpvideos.com
