  • Bellenden - Holly Grove - Lyndhurst Way - Chadwick: turning one - way to two - way traffic

    Southwark Council would like to hear your views on a proposal to replace Bellenden Road - Holly Grove Road - Lyndhurst Way - Chadwick Road one-way with two way traffic.

    Why the proposed changes?

    Part of a planning policy to bring sustainable development and long lasting improvements to the Peckham and Nunhead area (refer to Peckham area action Plan - http://www.southwark.gov.uk/futurepeckham)

    Part of the aim to make Southwark a 20mph borough by encouraging natural traffic calming (One-way traffic generally encourages faster traffic while two way working traffic promotes traffic calming)

    Part of the aim to make Southwark the best borough in London for cycling by improving access and permeability

    Contributes to Transport Plan target to increase the level of walking by widening footways and providing safer crossing for pedestrians

    Improve network permeability for all road users. There is no evidence that turning one-way traffic to two way results in congestion e.g. removal of the following gyratories: Copeland

    Rd-Consort Rd-Heaton Rd, Piccadilly two way, Tottenham Court Road, Trafalgar Square, Mansion House, Aldgate East, South Kensington, New Cross and Brixton Hill

    What are the benefits?

    Simplifies the road network and reduces street clutter More efficient use of road space One - way traffic is associated with high vehicle speeds and community severance and are

    being removed across London. We have recently successfully removed the Copeland Consort Gyratory and this is a complementary scheme

    Two way traffic has a natural traffic calming effect (as evidenced on Bellenden Road around the shopping parade)

    Improve access for cyclists Improve journey times and access for motorists Good opportunity to achieve soft benefits like improved retail environments, because they

    make traffic flows more easily readable

    Where I can see more detailed plans?

    The council is proposing to hold a drop in event, where project officers will be available to answer any queries, display details of the proposal and take on board local issues and suggestions made by residents. Details are below;
