So they went out to Chris, Rob said sorry, gave Chris’ lunch money back and they lived happily ever after.

OTTERSBy Alexandra Friedel

The otter family:Otters are cousins of badgers, weasels, minks, ferrets, wolverines, and pole cats.

Making their dens:Otters make their dens in abandoned, or empty, beaver and muskrat burrows.

Giving birth:A mother otter can give birth to 1-5 pups but usually gives birth to 2-3 pups a year.

Waterproofing:An otter can keep water out of their nose and ears by squeezing them shut.

Fishing: The mom is a fast and skillful hunter. She uses her tail when she jumps for her prey, then she carries the fish to the surface of the water. She often plays with it before she eats it. After she eats she jumps back in the water and catches a fish for her pups. At first it scares the pups but then they start to play with it, but their teeth are too small to do it any damage.

Later, the otter’s mom takes the fish to a log and eats it and the pups sit and watch. By the end of the summer the otter pups will know how to catch their prey and they can live on their own and their mother is ready to give birth again.

One day in Shapelandia the bully in Shapebrook Middle School, Rob Rectangle, came to school ready to take someone’s lunch money.

“Rob is the bully because he thinks he is cooler than everybody because he has 4 sides, 4 parallel sides, 4 right angles, and he’s taller than everybody,” said Chris Circle. “Hey, I heard that. Now you owe me your lunch money!” said Rob. Just then a new kid walked in and saw Rob bullying Chris and stepped in. “Hey stop bullying him,” said the new kid. “Who are you?” asked Chris. “I’m Sarah Square,” said Sarah. “Sq-sq-sq-square,” gasped Rob.

His jaw dropped and he started backing away and then ran away into the janitor’s closet. “What is his problem?” said Chris. “What’s your name?” asked Sarah. “My name is Chris Circle,” said Chris. “Why did you say he was a bully,” asked Sarah. “Well because he has 4 sides, 4 right angles, 4 parallel sides, and he’s taller than everyone else,” said Chris. “Oh boy, well at least he’s got the tall part going for him,” said Sarah. “Wait, what do you mean?” she asked

Chris, but it was too late. Sarah was already too far away walking towards the janitor’s closet.

Sarah opened the door and walked in. It was dark and warm with a lot of mops in it. “Go away,” said a voice from the

corner. “What?” said Sarah. “I said go away,” said Rob in an agitated voice. “Look, I know you’re mad. What’s your name?” asked Sarah. “Rob,” said Rob. “Okay, I know you’re made because we both have everything but I have four equal sides

and you don’t,” said Sarah. “Can’t you go to a different school Sarah,” said Rob. “No Rob, there was a war for angles at my old school, so my family moved here to Shapelandia and the closest school to my house was Shapebrook.” “Oh sorry Sarah,” said Rob. “It’s okay Rob,” said Sarah. “Now can you please day sorry to Chris and give him his lunch money?” asked Sarah. “Yeah,” said Rob.

So they went out to Chris, Rob said sorry, gave Chris’ lunch money back and they lived happily ever after.

In third grade you learn from the beginning to the end. In the beginning of the year you feel like everything is going to be harder and different and you’re right, it is. But as you learn through the year it doesn’t seem so hard. Some of the things you get better at or learn are graphs, multiplication, division, rounding, toads, line plots, compare and contrast, Masaai, and adaptations. As you learn

you get better at things you weren’t good at. If you are moving from second grade to third grade then you wonder what it is going to be like. What do you feel about leaving second grade? Do you feel nervous, excited, upset or scared? Are you okay leaving second grade? Well, don’t be upset leaving because there is always an adventure to have in third grade.

CLASSROOM NEWS

WHAT IS IT LIKE WRITING THE 164 NEWS?By Delilah Sardisco

In my opinion I think The 164 News was a great idea, and I also enjoy writing and seeing people read my articles and my friend’s articles. The editors for this month’s edition are Evelyn, Dillon, Aris, Taiden, and Hayley. First, I will interview Mrs. Green about what it feels like to make the newspaper. Mrs. Green says she is proud of how much we did. Aidan Z. says the hardest thing about writing for the paper is finding facts for non-fiction articles. Alexandra says she learns a lot about otters while writing the newspaper. In the first edition Evelyn made a comic called “Meep!” I thought the comic was wonderful and Evelyn thinks maybe she could do more Meeps.

Process: First, we pick what kind of article we want to write, for example, non-fiction or fiction. When the class chooses what they want to write for the newspaper. Next, we reread our writing pieces and then we give it to the editors. Next, we might get our paper back to fix mistakes. Then the editors give our work to Mrs. Behncke so she can type it up and give it to Mrs. Green. Then it goes in the newspaper with other articles and Mrs. Green puts pictures with them. Finally, you see them in the newspaper and we deliver it to other classes.

Rules: One rule is you can’t copy from other people or books. Then, you have to do a writing piece before anything else like a comic or drawing. Also, when you are an editor you have to be honest with your classmates. Finally, you cannot argue with the editors.

CINNAMON RABBITSBy Evelyn Beinetti

The cinnamon rabbit is a species that will rely on humans to survive.

HistoryMany rabbit breeders don’t support the sale of Easter pets (rabbits). The cinnamon was the surprising product of a series of cross mating.

BehaviorThe cinnamon rabbit is very adapted to the environment of a human home.

Taking care of a cinnamon rabbitThis is a list of things to help with taking care of a cinnamon rabbit.

To raise a rabbit you will need –A cageFoodWater BottleAnd love and care

If you want to you can buy a litter box but the hard part is training or you can buy a trained bunny.

Remember that if you breed them it will turn out you have 7 to 12 rabbits to take care of. Last, just always love it even when it’s big.

HARRIET TUBMAN ON THE $20 BILLBy Dominic Grande

The $20 bill has Harriet Tubman on it because she earned it. She earned it because she was a slave and was putting her life in danger every day by going back into America and helping slaves get into Canada. She did this because after the slaves were in Canada the hunters had no right to hunt them anymore. She also was a great convincer because she gave speeches all over the U.S.A. One of them was in Rochester. Harriet Tubman is replacing Andrew Jackson which some people are mad about. She was hit in the head with a brick thrown at her. She was a very brave woman. I think they both deserve to be on the $20 bill and Harriet Tubman really deserves it.

CLASS LOGO PART 2by Aidan Zaccagnini

So you’re probably wondering Aidan what is it? It is a brain with a “B” on the brim. We wear them on field trips so Mrs. Behncke can find us easily. The people who made brain logos for the contest were: Hayley, Aris, Evan, Dominic, Alexandra, Evelyn and me. But I switched to a wand and three blue stars to represent Math Magicians. No offence, but I thought mine would win, but it didn’t. I am fine with the brain with the “B” though. I think it looks pretty cool and creative. Also, there were different logos like a bomb for the Behncke Bombers, a Rocket Ship to Brainy World, a math equation, a brain, and a wand with three blue stars. This wrapped up our symbols unit, and that is our class logo for this year in third grade.

CHAMELEONSBy John Nunez-Green

Did you know that chameleons are unique? They are the only animals that can turn their eyes in different directions at the same time and have feet like mittens. They have long tongues to catch prey. They change color to show feelings and for the male to get a mate. Sometimes the female shows she does not want a mate. Chameleons change color to look like things they are standing on because it makes them camouflaged. This helps them to survive their predators. People around the world have chameleons as pets.

In the morning my teacher teaches alien math. In class he talks about spaceships. At lunch he makes us eat grass from outside. At recess he flies on his spaceship and his lunch is paper clips.

Tusk or Tooth?A narwhals tusk is actually a tooth. Only male narwhals have tusks.

CORAL REEFSBy Connor Plunkett

You are going to witness the most amazing thing ever – the coral reefs!

Coral reefs are the busiest places on Earth. Did you know that coral is actually tiny animals? Coral reefs are alive!

Reefs are full of plants and animals, they are full of life. They are often located near the equator. Some animals, such as the leatherback sea turtle, actually eat coral.

Some animals live in coral, like anemones. The clownfish lives in the anemone and you are probably wondering how they protect themselves. Well, the clownfish is actually protected from predators because if a predator comes near the anemone and tries to attack the clownfish they will get stung and that does not feel good! But you know what? It doesn’t hurt the clownfish.

So in conclusion, there are many amazing things about coral reefs.

CLASSROOM NEWS

THIRD GRADE RESPONSE TO INTERVENTION (RTI)By Aurora Ganz

RtI is something that you do in third grade where some people switch classrooms, but some do not. RtI is from 12:00 – 12:55. If you are in Mrs. Walsh’s RtI group, as I am, you mainly learn how to use a dictionary and you do literature circles.

Literature circles are when you pick a short chapter book and read a chapter of it each day.

There are different roles and you are always switching to different ones. If you are the illustrator, you pick a part of the chapter and draw a picture of it. If you are the notice and note person, you write down any sign posts you see (you will learn about sign posts before you do literature circles). If you are the discussion director, you lead the discussion and write down three questions. If you are the summarizer, you shorten up the chapter in your own words. And if you are the word wizard, you pick four words and decide if it is a good word choice, or what it means or how to say it.

If you are in Mr. Bartlett’s RtI group you will be in small groups and rotate through stations. The stations are independent work, computer work, and group work. Every E day you fill your binder with all your work. In Mrs. Behncke’s RtI group you practice fluency, comprehension, and spelling in small groups with Mrs. Juliano and Mrs. Grieco.

There is no RtI on S days but you do have it every other day. All second graders coming to third grade will love RtI!

ANGLER FISHBy Gianna Caldarelli

One of the coolest adaptations found in the deep sea is an animal’s ability to make its own light.

In the deepest, darkest part of the ocean the only light is light made by the bodies of these amazing animals. They are called deep sea angler fish. They are also called black seadevils!

Some angler fish have spines on their snout. The angler fish uses its spines to catch food, or prey. Angler fish live in many parts of the deep sea. Species, or kinds, are colorful and some can be plain black. The can be 1 inch to 6 feet in length.

The angler fish gets its name from its spine which it uses somewhat like a fishing rod. The spine’s tip has a small colorful tag of skin, the tag of skin acts like a lure. The angler fish moves the spine back and forth so it attracts other fish or shrimp, then the angler fish eats it.

New born angler fish float to the top of the sea where more food lives, but adults must return to the bottom where it is dark so they can use their glowing lure. It won’t be much help where it is bright. Also, the fish that swim in the warmer water at the top swim faster than the slow angler fish.

FACT: Angler fish are sneaky, they have body parts that look like a fishing pole with bait on the end.

ALL ABOUT SOUTH AFRICABy Taiden Makubire

LandThe first thing I will tell you about South Africa is that it is a country that is in the South of Africa. It has two coast lines, one for the Indian Ocean and one for the Atlantic Ocean. In addition, South Africa also surrounds the country of Lesotho. A lot of South Africa sits on a high and mostly flat piece of land.

GovernmentNow I will tell you about South Africa’s government. Under law of 1961, South Africa’s white people took control of all South Africa’s government.

Africa’s AnimalsIn the South African savannah a female lion waits in the tall grass for her prey. Instead of hunting an antelope or a zebra she’s hunting a cow owned by a rancher. Lions like this females are not so good for farmers. One reason this isn’t good is that farmers need their cows to survive along with the other animals they raise.

About meMy Dad is from South Africa and I might be going to South Africa next summer. While I was writing this piece I learned that the white people took over the South African government.

Is the Loch Ness monster real? Some people believe that there’s a creature in the water in a lake called Loch Ness in Scotland. People sometimes believe that they saw something in the lake. People called it the Loch Ness monster, or sometimes people called it Nessie. Some people visit Scotland to see this wonderful creature with equipment like cameras and phones. Some people saw creatures like

Nessie in Africa. A Nessie hunter took a picture of Nessie coming out of the water. In the 1930’s a new road was built close to Loch Ness. Some people said they saw a huge animal crossing the road. One night a reported said they saw Nessie crossing the road with a small animal in its mouth. A person took a picture of Nessie out of the water but that is no proof that the Loch Ness monster is real.

ELEPHANT SEALSBy Hayley Phillips

Elephant seals have dark skin and are round and fat. Elephant seals have what looks like half an elephant’s trunk. Males have inflatable trunks.

They mostly eat squid and fish from near the bottom of the ocean.

Elephant seals are also great swimmers. They can dive down to 3,000 feet which is 900 meters. They also have very good senses known as sight, hearing and touch. Their whiskers have a good sense of moving prey in the water.

Southern Elephant seals have only a few predators, leopard seals and sometimes adult males eat the pups.

They spend a lot of their time in the water off shore. The only come to shore to molt, which means shedding their skin and also to mate.

Their breeding season is in the months of August, September, and October. A female has one pup and the mother gives birth on ice or land. An elephant seal has black fur and drinks its mother’s milk for one month. The mother mates again a month after giving birth. After the female has a pup the seals split into groups.

A lot of elephant seals migrate about 3,000 miles which is 4,800 kilometers. Some elephant seals mate when they are about 4 years old but males wait until they are older so they are big enough to fight for the females.

A male elephant seal lives for about 20 years, the female’s life span is about 18 years.

HISTORY / PERSONAL NARRATIVE

MY GREAT GRANDFATHER’S STORYBy Apolo Haley

My great grandfather flew a B-52 Stratofortress and a B-17 Flying Fortress. He was in World War II. The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was also a plane in World War II. There were many other war planes. He was in the war for two years, 1944-1946. My great grandfather flew one of these planes (Germany was our worst enemy) as German soldiers shot the side of the airplane wing and it went down.
