It is important to begin this newsletter with a warm welcome to the
new members of SBHS Board of Trustees. This is a vital role within
any school and their support and guidance, while volunteering their
time and energy for the school and its students and staff is much
appreciated. Led by the newly appointed chair Jan Ormsby I am
looking forward to working closely with the BoT. It is also with pride
that I thank the outgoing board for their efforts during their own
tenures and of specific note are the efforts and contributions of Mr
John Rabbitt who ends a 16 year term on the SBHS BoT and finishes a
total of 21 years working on boards in southland schools.
Recognition within the student body continues and you will see later in the newsletter the recipients
of the 2019 Youthmark awards. Congratulations to these young men in their past accomplishments
and I wish them success with their continued endeavours. The selection of the Youthmark awards is
also a stark reminder that we are at the halfway point of the year and all our students need to check
in over the holidays with the goals and targets they have set for 2019.
The PTA, whose work and volunteered time is so much appreciated by the whole community have
once again held a very successful Surf ‘n Turf raffle. Congratulations to those who won prizes and
thanks to all of those who purchased tickets. The funds raised will be put towards the projects
highlighted and will benefit the students of the school directly as soon as possible.
It has been a privilege to see the work produced by the students throughout the school this term and
some of this culminated in the Conflict Project presentation for the Year 7 and 8 students. This was a
fantastic showcase of the level of achievement across this group.
Sport and cultural involvement are as strong as ever and the school will continue to encourage
participation in co-curricular activities with two major interschool events this term allowing our boys
to truly test themselves against the best from other areas. Our school choirs’ performances continue
to go from strength to strength and I recommend that you take any opportunity that you get to hear
them in action.
The cultural competition is in full rehearsal mode and I look forward to the performances and the
challenge for House honours.
Kind Regards
Simon Coe

Sarah Brown I have been a member of the SBHS Board since being coopted in May 2018. I am a trained solicitor, now working as an independent director for local companies, and a publicly listed national company. I have previous experience in the education sector. I was the Chair of the Southern Institute of Technology [SIT] until May 2017, a position I held for 6 years. In recent times I worked for the Southland Regional Development Strategy [SoRDS], which focused on what needs to happen to ensure that Southland thrives as a region. I am very focused on how we ensure that Southland is a place that our children will want to live in years to come.
I am a strong supporter of the direction Southland Boys’ High School is travelling in, believing that the school is currently along the path of being the first-choice educator of boys in Southland, and I am keen to carry on this work.
Sarah Brown
Cam Froude I am Cam Froude an old boy of the School and Coldstream Hostel. I was originally from Western Southland but now live in Invercargill with my wife Nickalette, a teacher at Waihopai, and have 3 children. My eldest two attend SBHS and my youngest goes to Southland Girl’s High School. I work at Fonterra and have been a director for our own business. I have spent the past 2 terms of the WaihopaI School Board. During this time, I have gained some valuable skills that I bring to the SBHS board. I believe the children of the school come first and their achievement is a focus for the board. Along
with this the school and the board need to have a strong community involvement not only to keep you informed but help your children at the school. SBHS has always been a strong school with a good reputation and I would like it to continue to be the school that everyone wants to send their children to.
Cam Froude
Peter Heenan I was coopted to the SBHS Board in November 2016, having previously been on the board as Chair from 2004 to 2008. My background is accounting and finance. I am a Fellow Chartered Accountant and Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors. I currently Chair the Southern Institute of Technology and have a number of directorships on private companies and am a trustee for Hospice Southland. I have always lived in Southland and have enjoyed being involved in the

education sector and contributing where I can to our community. We have four children; the two oldest boys are past pupils of SBHS, and our youngest son is in year 12. SBHS provided the opportunities for the boys to learn skills, knowledge and social responsibility for their future. I am a strong supporter of the direction SBHS is heading - to motivate and inspire all students to achieve their best academically, culturally and physically.
Peter Heenan
Amy Kubrycht I am Amy Kubrycht. My two boys [aged 12 and 15] are both students at SBHS. I returned to Southland in 2015 after 16 years of living in London. My children were both born there and as such I have experience of the private and state education systems in both NZ and overseas. When the children were younger, I undertook a governance role as co-opted parent member of the Personnel Committee for their UK primary school. I did that for three years, whilst working part time, volunteering in the school library and chairing the school’s parent-teacher association. My education background is in Finance, Economics and Psychology and I have worked
in the field of human resources [HR] for over 20 years. Whilst at university, I spent 3 years as an Assistant Lecturer in the Psychology department, and I returned to teaching when I first came home – facilitating online degree and diploma courses in HR, Communication and Business Ethics at SIT2Learn. I’m now working full time as an HR Manager for local government and one of my interests is the future world of work. Our children will be doing very different jobs from those that we currently know and perform. I’m seeking to use my background, experience, knowledge and interest to help shape their future. It is important that the education our boys receive enables them to adapt to and perform in the new world of work and be valuable contributors to our local community as well as responsible global citizens.
Amy Kubrycht
Janice Ormsby I have served as a member of the SBHS Board since 2014. I am an experienced Governance Trustee and have been elected to two school boards, collectively, over 14 years in both the Primary and Secondary sector. SBHS is the school of choice for my husband, Andy, and I in relation to our three sons, Connor, Morgan and Jamie. Single sex education is critical to the development of boys learning to be good men, to achieve and experience success as males and to be supported by a team of experienced teaching professionals and role models who
understand boys’ education and what success looks like. I have high expectations that the Rector and his staff will lift our Academic and Cultural successes to match the levels of our sporting prowess. I am a team player and have been part of a team that has steered our school through a period of great change. From this momentum I have been responsible for developing a new culture of transparency and accountability by introducing:
1. SchoolDocs [Operational policy and process manual] which is now publicly accessible to staff, students, parents and board members via the school website
2. New Governance manual to support and enhance how the Board makes decisions
4
3. Delegation schedule for the Board, Rector and staff which clearly defines who is responsible for which roles and who has financial delegations and responsibilities
Other Community board roles I have been involved in include South Alive Board, NZ Police Maori Advisory group, Local government Te Roopu Taiao, and SBHS rep on Invercargill Community of Learning [COL] and Invercargill Secondary Schools Support Network Trust at Number 10. I am employed as a Senior Support Officer for a Member of Parliament, a role I have had for almost 15 years with three different Members of Parliament. I am an “Old girl” of Southland Girls High School and attended Waiau College in my Intermediate years. It is always a privilege to serve our school community as a Parent.
Janice Ormsby
Emma Smaill My name is Emma Smaill, I am the mum of 3 boys, 2 of whom are at SBHS boarding at Coldstream. We own a farming business at Wendonside in Northern Southland. Being a mother of boys, I am passionate about boy’s education and boys succeeding in our fast paced and ever-changing world. I have extensive and current BOT experience that I bring to the SBHS BOT. I have been on our local primary school [roll of 110-120 kids] board for 6 years- 4 ½ of them as chairperson. In this time, we have navigated our way through
some challenging times making sure as a board we continually asked the difficult questions to ensure we meet the agreed values and goals set for our school community. I have completed personal professional development in the area of governance this certainly has raised my skill base and given me confidence in the chairperson’s role. I also have governance experience in running our business. For the past 5 I have chaired the governance advisory board for this business. I am pleased to be involved at SBHS on a board level to ask the questions- “so what does that mean for our students”- to encourage the boundaries to be pushed in all aspects of student’s time at SBHS- academically, culturally and sporting.
Emma Smaill
Paul Stirling My name is Paul Stirling. Along with my wife Wendy, we are sheep and beef farmers in Western Southland. I am a proud old boy of both Southland Boys’ High School and Coldstream Hostel. Our Son is in his second year at SBHS and boards at the Coldstream Hostel as a year 9 student. I like and believe in the traditional values that Southland Boys holds. The School motto “Not for school but life we are learning” is a true
reflection on how school life should be viewed. I have sat on the board at our local primary school for the last 6 years and I believe I offer a practical down to earth approach. Southland Boys’ High has had some big changes over the last few years and I believe in sound governance supporting management to help our boys achieve the best they can in a wide range of academic, sporting or cultural opportunities.

Charlene Withy I, along with my husband, own a dairy farm near Dipton where we have lived for 18 years. I started out as an electrical technician, then spent several years on my OE, then returned home to retrain as an occupational therapist. When we started our family, we made the full commitment to dairy farming and moved to Southland. We have 4 children – our eldest son finished his Year 13 at SBHS in 2018. We have a son in Year 11 and another coming to SBHS in 2020 for Year 9. The boys board at Coldstream Hostel from Monday to Friday. Our children went to Dipton
Primary School, where I was on the Board for 8 years – 2.5 years as BoT chair. I enjoyed working alongside the other Board members and the Principal to get the best outcomes for the children at the school and learnt a lot about a board of trustees’ role and the education system. In 2018 I was coopted to the Southland Boys’ High School Board of Trustees and am pleased to be continuing in that role until my term ends in May 2021. I see SBHS providing our sons with, not only opportunities to gain great skills and knowledge in academic, sporting and cultural areas, but also to be a place where they are proud to belong. I believe that SBHS has a fantastic future, and I support the school as it aims to provide top-quality learning and a positive culture for students and staff.

Deans’ Corner Firstly, the Deans, along with the Senior Management and staff of SBHS would like to thank all the students
who manage to make it to school, and all their classes on time and prepared for learning. We currently have
a few students we are tracking who are consistently late and we will be holding them accountable. If your
son is to be late for any reason, please ensure you contact the school.
Thank you to those of you who have had discussions with your sons about what an appropriate appointment
is during school time, and the need to be at School Assemblies. We have noticed an improvement for both,
and we will continue to monitor.
Finally, I would like to share a photo of our Year 9 students that received awards in a Year 9 Assembly.
These boys crossed our stage in recognition of their academic effort. It is always pleasing to see our young
men striving to be the best they can be and portraying our school values.

Year 7 and 8 Some Junior School students were lucky enough on
17 June to listen to Mr Russell Branks who spent time sharing his experiences of being a student of
Southland Boys' during the 1950s and then going on to fly Fighter Jets and being a Lead member of the
Airforce Aerobatics Squadron and once he left the Airforce flying for Qantas and even having to fly the
Queen.
This has tied in perfectly with the Junior School just finishing their Conflict Projects and the Year 7 students
about to start their Old Boys Projects.
The students were fascinated that during his time at Southland Boys' Mr Branks was caned, had compulsory
military training and that there was a firing range that was used; which is now the Long Jump Pit.
A great experience for the boys.

Conflict Around the World During this Term the Junior School have been studying Conflict around the world. As part of this, some of
the students have chosen to write a diary entry from the point of view of someone at War.
Below is an extract from Thomas Spain (822).
War Diary Entry
Dear Diary July 2nd 1917
After a long couple of days walking and walking. We have finally made it to Passchendaele. It has been raining heavily all the way there. Freezing cold sleeping as well. But we have made it. As we gazed around we saw disaster. Dead trees everywhere. We were knee deep in mud. We needed to dig trenches, cause every step was a struggle.
We dug trenches for one hour, helping each other get it done. We were nearly finished when... BANG! The man right beside me fell to the ground. Shock took over my body. I froze. BANG! Another gunshot brang me back to reality. I dove head first into the trench. I rose to my feet hands shaking, head spinning this was my first real battle. The Sergeant ran past I stopped him. “Sarge I’m nervous” my voice was shaky. “This is no place for a nervous man” he replied as he trudged away shouting orders. I know we're all on the same team but it feels like we’re fighting for ourselves around here I decided to pick myself up and get going, I grabbed my gun and went into the fight. Men fell all around me. It was like lambs to the slaughter. My ears were ringing with gunshots. My shoulder was aching from all the firing. Reload after reload. The Turks just kept coming. Wave after wave. This is not what I signed up for. This was hell. Then... BANG I fell to my knees. My head was spinning but through my blurry vision I could see a man. His mouth was moving but I couldn’t hear him. He lay me down and I shut my eyes.

On Tuesday 25 June our Junior School celebrated the end of their
Conflict study, with an evening where all Junior School (nearly 300)
projects were on display. Thank you so much to those that came
along to check out the great work that our Junior School produced.
The boys are very proud of what they have done, so enjoyed the
opportunity to share their work with the SBHS Community. Also, a
big thank you to the SBHS PTA for supplying the cakes and slices
for all our visitors.
Ambassadors Report Recently the Year 8 Ambassadors attended the Young Leaders Day in Dunedin. The boys had a great day,
and these are some words of wisdom they gained:
I believe a leader needs to block out the negativity and focus on the positive side of things, no matter how many times you are told that you are bad at this or bad at that. Keep striving to be the best you can be.
Tim Richardson Everyone can be a leader; you don’t have to have a title to lead. To be a good leader you just have to be
able to talk to people. Be the helping hand you all have the potential to lead. Whether it is in your group,
class or sports team. Thomas Spain
If you have something on your mind and its building up sometimes it’s good just to let it out to someone likes of us Ambassadors, Teachers, and Tessa the Student Counsellor.
Don’t live life with regret always persevere towards something you want and if you want it enough to keep at it and eventually you will get it!
“A problem shared is a problem halved”
Lucas Jennings
11
If you want to get far in life you must persevere and give it ago, which means you need to step up and get
more involved in what you don’t usually get involved with. Angus Burnett
As a leader you need to be a good listener to listen to everyone's opinion, so you are not just thinking about
what you want.
Also, you need to listen to someone that is trying to talk to you because you might be their inspiration to
help them with a better life or overcome something, they have inside of them holding them back. With the stuff that someone has given to you they might need help so you can be the one to change them and help
them. Will Cairns
Humility! Humility is not thinking you are better than everyone else, it is doing what the prefects did last week, they didn’t mention half the great stuff they had achieved. When we were at Young Leaders Day a
guy talked to us about how he was Head boy, one day a girl said “Hi”. to him but he didn’t reply, later that
day he received a note saying, “Are you too good for us now that you are head boy?” The main message is don’t think you are better than everyone else because of what you have, be humble and think of each other
as equals because no matter what we can always learn from each other. James McLeay
Sticks and stone may break your bones, but words will never hurt me. Well, they will. You may think that
being beat up and kicked in the face may hurt but being verbally abused is much worse than you think. If you see a kid around the school and you rock on up to them thinking you're the man and you say something
like “Your trash at Fortnite!’ or “Pow, you stink!” how is that going to make them feel? They might be big and tough but deep down they will be heartbroken. After that little negative comment, they might have a
terrible day and go home and have a sulk on their bed, all thanks to you and your comment. So next time you are in that situation, stop, have a think, is it worth it?
Charlie Hopcroft One of the many things we learnt at young leaders' day was its ok to not be ok. If you're going through some tough times, or you’ve done something wrong and its eating you up inside. Tell someone! They will
listen and help you. The toughest times in life is when you feel like you are alone you will never be alone someone will always be there for you. And remember anything is fixable. Live life to the fullest.

SBHS Junior School Cross Country Some Year 8 students wrote about their cross-country experience that was held here at school on Friday 7
June. The results are under the sports section in this newsletter.
I loved running the cross country. As we lined up “Ready, set, go!” We shot off like a bullet. Halfway
around the course I found my pace. As I trudged down the home straight all my friends were cheering my
name “Go Ryan, go!”. Ryan MacKay Rm20G
It was a nice day for a run. It had been raining the day before so when we set off and went around the
posts and got to the middle of the field and I saw some boys fall over and splash-mud went everywhere!
On the last 100m there was someone ten metres in front of me and I used the last bit of my energy and
passed him!

Prefects Patch Peer Mediation Course On Thursday the 13th of June, the entire Year 13 group took part in a Leadership through Peer Mediation
course. They learned the different types of personalities during conflicts. On top of this they practiced skills
and techniques on becoming good listeners and resolving conflict with Peer Mediation. Here we have some
students playing a new game about paying attention and brainstorming about mediation.

Big Brother (Tuakana Teina big brother little brother) The newly implemented 'Big Brother' program at SBHS has opened leadership opportunities for all Year 13
boys. They have been assigned to mentor the Year 9 and 10 students. 'Big Brother' is when the Year 13
cohort mentor groups of Year 9 and 10 students every Friday at tutor and guide them through leadership
and skill building activities. The program allows the Year 13s to develop and apply their leadership skills in
mentoring the younger students as well as getting to know them and their aspirations. In return the Year 9
and 10 students are able to pick up valuable leadership skills from the older students as well as strengthening
friendships with their peers and their sense of belonging in the Senior School.

School Ball 2019 On the 31st of May 2019 SBHS and SGHS had their
annual school ball held at Transport World. The
theme this year was Grease. Leading up to the
ball there was a lot of excitement and buzz and
the boys were rearing to go. We were lucky
enough to have a Teachers’ Only Day, so had
time to get our suits primed for the occasion. At
last the Classic Cars started rolling in to drop off
everyone at Transport World. Once the 300
students arrived, the band kicked off and the
Grand March officially started the Ball.
Throughout the night we got to showcase our skill
on the dancefloor, showing off what we had
learnt at Ball Room Dancing Lessons. The night
went very fast and was a lot of fun, with dancing as well as the School Song and the school Haka happening
at various times. Everyone looked spectacular and had a night to remember.

House Competitions This year's annual House Competitions have been underway since Week 7 of Term 2. These have been a
hugely successful. They are organised and run by the Prefects. The purpose of House Competitions is to
engage boys of all year groups around the school during lunchtimes and entertain them with activities where
they can be competitive, have plenty of fun and use some energy. This year’s competition has started with
Dodgeball and has gone very smoothly as there are plenty of boys from all years participating and working
together in their House Teams. We look to continue the competition into Term 3 and organise a variety of
sports to suit the boys’ abilities and interests. The House Competitions have also been a great opportunity
for the Prefects to have a leadership role in the school.

Nga Manu Korero On Thursday the 13th of June a combined Roopu of Tauira
from Southland Boys’ High School, Southland Girls’ High
School, James Hargest College, Aparima College, Aurora
College and Verdon College travelled to Otepoti to tautoko
the speakers performing at Nga Manu Korero. As one big
group we stayed at Te Marae O Otakou, where we spent
some memorable time with other schools and students
and built on Maori tikanga, such as
whakawhanaungatanga. Collectively, we all embraced our
Maori culture and stood to tautoko each brave speaker on
the stage from Murihiku. By taking a unique approach

Big Sing Competition On Tuesday 18th June, Momentum took
part in the annual New Zealand Choral
Federation Big Sing competition held at
First Church.
Each competing choir has to present a
programme containing a piece of choral
Art music, a New Zealand/Pasifika
composition, and one of their own
choosing. Momentum sang Pemulwuy by
Australian composer Paul Jarman, May
The Road Rise To Meet You by New
Zealand composer David Hamilton and the
pop hit Faith by George Michael.
As the last choir to perform for the evening, there was a lot of anticipation about the performance, and the
programme went down well with the audience, who clearly enjoyed the range and enthusiasm that
Momentum presented. For those who were unable to be there, you can view the performance on YouTube:
https://youtu.be/miaJxo_hEBs. Special thanks must go to Miss Sarfaiti who played piano for the choir.
ACCELL Programme In ACCELL we have been working on a “Food” module where we have been reading, writing and talking
about growing, harvesting and producing food and meals. Sebastian, Kevin and David produced their own
food by making and eating Banana, Berry Delights! It was great fun and tasted delicious! We have now
started work on a “Climate” module.

World Challenge
Working in partnership with World Challenge, we’re excited to bring you something out of the ordinary – an
expedition travelling to Ecuador in 2020. This once in a lifetime opportunity that will set students apart, empowering
you to stand strong in front of employers and universities. The whole World Challenge experience is a great opportunity for students to be challenged and develop some unique and real-world life skills and hopefully gain some valuable perspective by travelling a country and immersing themselves in a culture vastly different to their own. Feel free to contact Miss Hogan at school or World Challenge on 0800 456 134 if you have any questions or visit the links below:
