Recent grant awards to Southern Vermont College will bring innovative curriculum ad-vances to campus. A $200,000 grant from the Davis Educational Foundation will fund SVC’s transformation from its current fi ve-course model curriculum to one featuring four courses per semester. Th is structural change will allow for pedagogical re-visioning as well as en-hanced experiential learning across all fi elds of study, an approach aligned to collaborative laboratory learning. Th e curriculum change will evolve over the next three years, accord-ing to Provost Al DeCiccio.

A $25,000 award from the Edwin S. Web-ster Foundation will help fund several techno-logical resources, including MOODLE course management software for faculty, additional loaner laptops and new projection equipment for the library, equipment for the Learning Diff erences Center and the purchase of Kindle Readers with preloaded course material for students in a business course this fall. Th e Kindles, six-inch, handheld electronic de-vices, can download entire textbooks as well as over 300,000 news sources.

Th e SVC Offi ce of Advancement is ad-ditionally pleased to recognize that, despite a tough economy, nearly $800,000 was raised for the College in the fi scal year 2008-2009. Karen Trubitt, Dean of Advancement, also re-ported that the number of donors (alumni do-nors and other college friends) supporting SVC was up nine percent over the previous year.

SVC GOLDEN ALUMNI (those who graduated 50 years ago or more) gathered at the May commencement for a special celebration. Th ree former students who attended when the school was known as St. Joseph College, are pictured in the photo at right with President Gross. From left to right, Ruth Champlin ’46, Norma Brenenstuhl ’58, and Phyllis Ruggles ’52. Mrs. Ruggles brought in some SVC memorabilia from her school days to share. All Golden Alums are invited to join us for SVC’s 83rd commence-ment on May 8, 2010. Please contact the Alumni Offi ce at 802- 447-6357 for more information.

AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR (House of Sand and Fog, Th e Garden of Last Days) and honorary degree recipient Andre Dubus III delivered honest, heartfelt and sage words for the graduating class at SVC’s 82nd commencement exercises in May. Dubus urged graduates not to get caught up in a culture that divides people into winners and losers. With his newly conferred “doctoral magic dust,” Dubus said his wish for the graduates was, “to go out there, suff er a little bit, get great growth and fi nd great joy.” In the photo at right, Dubus talks with SVC senior speaker and valedictorian Sarah Hersey before the ceremony.

Networking in a Tough EconomyFree Career Resources for Students and Alumni by Denise Spencer, Career Services

Networking is a critical tool to utilize for a successful job search, especially in a tough economy. Research shows that 60 to 80 percent of jobs are found through networking. How do I network, you ask? Below are some pointers to help you get started!

Contact people you know. We all have family and friends and they have family and friends. Ask for advice and other connections in the fi eld in which you are looking. Are you on Face-book or Linked-In? Update your status with the statement, “(name) is hoping to speak with someone who works in the XYZ industry.”

Join the club. Professional organizations can be a great resource for networking. Many national organizations have local chapters. Join a local Chamber of Commerce or a Young Professionals group. Th is is a great way to meet others in your area and seek contacts that may help you fi nd that ideal job.

Revisit your past. Are you an active member of your alumni association? Keeping in touch with former classmates is a great network-ing opportunity. Southern Vermont College has a student, alumni and faculty group on Facebook. You can fi nd our link on www.facebook.com/svcalumni.

Do a good deed. Volunteering expands your network and exposes you to new people. If possible, choose an organization that’s related to your profession, or the profession you want to pursue. Organizations can always use an extra set of hands with building skills, com-puter work, clerical tasks or organizational skills.

NEW BUSINESS Division Chair Eric Drouart brings a wealth of global experience in marketing and international business to SVC. His corporate background includes overseas develop-ment work for Bristol-Myers Squibb and General Foods. “What drives me is to be able to share real-world business experiences with students, mentoring them to be successful in careers.”

THE DISTINQUISHED ALUMNI award for 2009 was presented to Richard Gauthier ’91, Bennington Chief of Police and an instructor in criminal justice at the Col-lege, in recognition of his contributions in his career, community service and personal achievements. Gauthier, a Criminal Justice major himself at SVC, later went on to the FBI National Academy and received an M.A. in Criminal Justice Administration from Norwich University. A lifelong resident of Benning-ton, he has been with the Bennington Police since 1980, serving as chief for eleven years. Gauthier proudly accepted his award at com-mencement from President Karen Gross and Director of Alumni Relations Patrick Buckley.

Each year, we have a themed lecture series on our campus, and the theme for this year’s series is Innovation. What an apt topic, given the inno-vations underway at SVC. I welcome this op-portunity to share some of them with you. More importantly, I look forward to welcoming you to campus during the year—so you can experience the changes and innovations fi rst-hand.

We celebrate the offi cial opening of Hunter Hall on September 26. In addition to providing quality residential space for students (mostly single rooms), this new building off ers student lounge space, two amazing laboratories, com-puter and conference rooms, offi ces, a new healthcare center, a beautiful kitchen and the glorious Greenberg Atrium with mezzanine space. Th e building design is innovative, creating a true living and learning community within one build-ing. Author E.M. Forster would take note: Every student has a room with a view.

Within Hunter Hall, we have created two new, state-of-the-art laboratories—a Science Lab and a Simulation Lab where our healthcare stu-dents can perfect their skills. For me, it is excit-ing to create space where remarkable hands-on learning can occur, and I look forward to visiting the labs regularly to see our students in action. Our dining hall on the lower campus has been totally renovated, opening up the space for added

seating. Using a leaf motif and bright fall colors, it has a very Vermont feel to it. We also tweaked the food menu so that students will experience a range of new dining options.

Th is fall, we welcome several new faculty and staff members to campus. Each brings distinctive talents to SVC, and all are deeply committed to helping our students succeed. You can learn more about our faculty on our Website, www.svc.edu. (While you’re there, read Professor Tom Redden’s blog—chronicling his summer travels through China, representing SVC with a Vermont Cham-ber of Commerce contingency.)

Our athletic program is undergoing innova-tion too. We are delighted that accomplished coach, athlete, author Chris Cruz has joined us as Director of Athletics. After successful recruit-ing and team development across all programs, we embrace this year with a thriving conference, excellent coaches, wonderful school spirit and opportunities for success for our student-athletes on and off the fi eld.

Our lecture series this year features, among other speakers, Dr. Henry Louis Gates, the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and the Director of the W. E. B. Du Bois Institute for Af-rican and African American Research at Harvard University and Pulitzer prize-winning author Annette Gordon-Reed, who holds professorships

at both Rutgers University and New York Law School. Both individuals have written remarkably innovative books, and their respective research is on the cutting edge in their fi elds.

Stay tuned for additional examples of innova-tion within our academic program—from curric-ular advancements to technology that enhances learning. Watch for meaningful partnerships with area organizations. As I refl ect on our progress, particularly in our complex world, I am struck by the words of Professor Th eodore Levitt who observed that innovation is “the vital spark of all human change, improvement and progress.”

SVC is innovating and improving—for the benefi t of our students and their families, our alumni, friends and our community. Also in this issue is our Honor Roll of Donors — without whom none of these innovations would be pos-sible. It is an exciting time to be an SVC student. I am proud to share the remarkable progress of this school with you. Th ank you for your ongoing support of Southern Vermont College.

NECC Men’s Basketball Team Wins AwardTh e SVC men’s basketball team gar-nered the 2008-2009 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Sports-manship Award this winter. Th e award is voted on by all head coaches in the conference. SVC Coach Michael Mc-Donough stated that, “Sportsmanship can mean many things. In this case, I think it says that we came to play, were never out of a game, and won and lost with class. Our guys respected their opponents.”

Southern Vermont College has appointed Christina Cruz, Ph.D., a coach, Olympic-trained athlete and educational research analyst as the College’s new Director of Athletics. Cruz worked at Williams College for more than 20 years in many capacities, including as Research Analyst and Facilities Man-ager as well as Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Women’s Crew Head Coach. She is the author of the recently published book, Gender Games: Why Women Coaches are Losing on the Field, on gender issues that persist in athletics and how they infl uence female coaches’ sense of self and their deci-

sions to stay in or leave coaching. Cruz competed on the rowing team

while a student at the University of Wis-consin-Madison, then went on to become a member of the 1980 Olympic Team and compete on the Women’s National Row-ing Teams. She holds a B.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Wiscon-sin, an M.Ed. in Administration from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and a Ph.D. in Educational Research and Evalua-tion in Curriculum and Instruction from the State University of New York at Albany. Her awards include the Civilian Congressional Medal of Honor.

Harrington Honored Graduate Nick Harrington ’08, shown with SVC President Gross and Interim Director of Athletics Don Schaff er, was presented with his framed #21 jersey following this year’s commencement. As the school’s all-time leader in rebounds (1026), having led the nation in both his junior and senior seasons, he was also SVC’s second all-time leading scorer and sixth 1,000 point scorer. Harrington returned from playing hoops with the Cottbus White Devils of the German Professional League, where he plans to return in the fall. In one memorable game against Mitchell College, Harrington scored 37 points and pulled down 33 rebounds, securing him a place in the record books for Division III and in Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd. To read more about Harrington’s remarkable achievements on the court, see the Mountaineers’ Web site at www.svcathletics.com for his sports profi le.

SPRING AHEAD - FALL BACK AT SVC By Joe Frey ’08, Director of Athletic Communications

Spring 2009 was an exciting time for the Southern Vermont College Athletic Department with the baseball team (12-26) hosting the Inaugural New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Baseball Championship, winning

the most games in a season since 1989. Th e young squad, made up of mostly freshman and sophomore ball play-ers, played smart and tough baseball but came up short when they were eliminated in the semi-fi nals by Becker

College. Ball players Adam Northup and Eric Wells were named to the 2009 NECC All Tournament Team. In other conference news, junior David Gage was named to the Academic All-Conference for baseball, freshman Kayla Whitman was named to the All-NECC Softball First-Team, junior Ryan Heron was given an NECC Volleyball Honorable Mention. Both Northup and Wells also were mentioned on the NECC Honorable Mention list for baseball. During the regular season, the women’s softball team (3-24) snapped a 46 game losing streak, and the men’s volleyball squad (2-16) winning its fi rst match in two years. Th is burst of winning is only a small sample of what is to come for the Moun-taineers as the programs continue to move forward and strengthen under new leadership with a thirst for developing student-athletes to be successful on and off the fi eld. Fall 2009 brings a greatly increased recruiting class to SVC as the men’s and women’s soccer programs continue to build a strong core. Be sure to walk the

campus Homecoming Weekend (Sept. 26) at 10:00 a.m. for the Mountain-eer Invitational Cross Country event, and join us later in the afternoon as the soccer teams host games with Newbury College on Everett Field. To view the full fall schedule of games, visit www.athletics.com and click on Calendar of Events.

Th ings are busy for Harry Gold, who majored in accounting while at SVC. Gold started his fi rst company, online marketing fi rm Interactive Promotions, not long after graduating college and sold it four years later to a major advertising agency. Gold became interested in merging computer technology with marketing early in the game, and credits the computer science department at Southern Vermont College for preparing him well for this arena. “SVC did an excellent job of prepping me with the right computer skills,” Gold said.

Th e entrepreneur’s next Boston-based venture called Overdrive Interactive, is an online, search and social media marketing fi rm founded in 2001. Gold is currently CEO of the fi rm, assisting clients such as Harley-Davidson, Dow Jones & Company, New York Times Digital, IBM and other Fortune 500 companies. He is a frequent lecturer on online marketing and has written widely on the subject, including a regular column for ClickZ Experts. To see recent columns written by Gold, visit www.ovrdrv.com/about_us/clickz.asp.

Gold is quick to praise the intimate environment at SVC as being “conducive to my success.” With his interest in business and the emerging computer marketplace, he could “indulge in a creative side” in the small school setting. He credits a sense of community at the College that helped prepare him for fostering relationships in his corporate life. “I felt that the faculty and staff really cared about us,” Gold said of his SVC experience. “Today I value that type of relationship with clients as well.” Gold can be reached on Facebook at www.facebook.com/harryjgold.

Th e Finish Line Fund Initiative Aware that many students and their families were facing real and unanticipated fi nancial stress this year due to the econo-my, Th e Finish Line Fund, a dimension of our Annual Fund, was created to help SVC students complete their undergradu-ate education. Several generous donors came forward to provide this extra level of support.

Why Giving Matters, Especially NowHundreds of alumni, friends, businesses and foundations support South-ern Vermont College. Some want to honor a classmate’s memory or a favor-ite faculty member; some seek to preserve our historic home, the Everett Mansion; still others are motivated to support a student group or athletic team that was an instrumental part of their college experience.

Th is year, amidst economically challenging times for everyone, some students and families are experiencing sudden needs that will seriously impact their ability to fi nance and fi nish their education. A college degree remains one asset that is not depreciating in value. Th e College asks you to help us ensure that our students are able to complete their education.

Please consider a gift to the Annual Fund: a gift can be made online at www.svc.edu/support or send a check to Institutional Advancement, SVC, 982 Mansion Drive, Bennington, VT 05201-6002. Th ank you for your generosity!

As part of the annual Four Colleges Issues Forum (Bennington College, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, Southern Vermont College and Williams College), Anita Hill spoke to a packed hall at the Bennington Center for the Arts in April. In 1991, Hill testifi ed before the Senate Judiciary Com-mittee during then Supreme Court nominee Clarence Th omas’ confi rmation hearing. Th e legacy of her testimony includes an in-creased awareness of sexual harassment in the workplace today. SVC President Karen Gross introduced her friend and colleague, now a law professor at Brandeis University and author of Speaking Truth to Power, at the spring event. abov
