Brief History of Greenwich• Set on the banks of the River Thames just four miles

downstream from Tower Bridge Greenwich is particularly noted for its magnificent architecture, beautiful parkland and a lively town centre.

• Since its earliest days, the town of Greenwich has changed and evolved to meet the changing needs of its people.

• Since the Romans settled here, it has been shaped by seafaring, industry, the arrival of the railway and higher education, as well as by Royalty and the Navy.

• The Royal Observatory, home of Greenwich Mean Time and the Prime Meridian line, is one of the most important historic scientific sites in the world.

• The Trafalgar Tavern on the waterside, one of the most historic pubs in the area, was once frequented by Thackeray, Dickens and friends who all enjoyed the tavern’s most famous dish – whitebait caught straight from the Thames!

Charles Dickens

• Charles Dickens b. 1812. Dickens had a great love for Greenwich. This is revealed particularly in essays such as Greenwich Fair (Sketches by Boz, Vol.1, 1836). His late-in-life novel Our Mutual Friend (1864) has Bella Wilfer marrying John Rokesmith in St Alfege's Church and the wedding breakfast being held, apparently, in the Trafalgar Tavern. (Source)

• This was the very same inn, indeed, to which his many friends invited Dickens for a whitebait dinner before his departure to the States on his last reading tour in 1867.

‘In recent times the British state’s thinking has been federal, multicultural, and free market – a soft Thatcherite mix which, according to the last five prime ministers at least, was more befitting the minimum process known as ‘Europe’ and the maximum process known as globalisation. Our current predicament is that none of this thinking has been sympathetic to the principle and the practice of British national identity.’Source – History Today
