The SVPS U13A Boys and Girls took part in the Can-nons Creek National Waterpolo Tournament. Both teams competed in the A division. The boys produced three great victories against the likes of Wynberg Boys U13A, Saheti (JHB) and Cannons Creek. They capped off the Tournament with a 3-2 victory. The boys team finished in a respectable 7th place, which ensured that

they will remain in the “A” League in 2016. The girls were unbeaten on day one. On day two they played rivals, Reddam, in the penultimate pool match. After a 0-2 loss to Reddam, the girls were paired up against a strong Herschel U13A Team in the Semi-Final. The girls played well to win 3-1. The Final was against Red-dam which ended in a 4-2 loss for Sun Valley.

Caraway slaw and orange and peach chutney dressingServes 6

INGREDIENTS:For the dressing:• 2 cloves garlic, crushed• 10 ml orange zest• 5 ml ginger, freshly grated• 1 red chilli, sliced• 3/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice• 2 tbls Wellington’s red wine vinegar• 1/4 cup sesame oil• 1 tbls honey• 2 tbls Wellington’s Peach Chutney• Salt to tastePlace all ingredients in a food processor and blend.The slaw:• 3 large green apples,

skin on, sliced• 250 g green cabbage, finely shredded• 250 g red cabbage, finely shredded• 1cup walnuts, toasted• 1/2 cup sunflower seeds, toasted• 1/2 cup sultanas• 6 spring onions with tops, roughly chopped• 1/2 cup mint, chopped• 2.5 ml caraway seeds, toasted and crushed (optional)

METHOD:Toss all the ingredients together and mix well with the orange dressing just before serving.

I love the warm, sweet, almost peppery aroma of caraway seeds, with their hint of aniseed. And you can taste the sunshine in the sultanas…

7 EXAMS & BEAUTY

HOW TO BEAT EXAMINATION STRESS Do you sweat as the date of your examinations approaches? Is the lack of calmness causing you to under-perform?

Here is some advice to tide over those anxious moments!

TOP 4 SUMMER SKIN TIPSAs you prepare to show more skin, get ready to face the sun’s rays with our top 4 summer skin tips!

1. Exfoliate for clearer, smoother skinWhat it does: Exfoliation removes dead, dulling skin debris to prevent congestion and improve hydration from toners and moisturizers. When: Perform in the mornings prior to toner, moisturizer, SPF and make-up application. Tip: Make-up will last longer on an exfoliated skin!

2. Keep skin hydratedHow: Up your regimen’s level of hydration with intensive masques, perfect for use one to two times a week. Boosters are a great fit, working best when layered underneath a moisturizer. Toners are a refreshing moisturizer prep, working to even out skin porosity. Tip: Refresh with a revitalizing toner spritz at your desk, in the car or at the gym.3. Make friends with H20Why: Higher temperatures and more time

outdoors leads to internal dehydration, which can result in headaches and dizzy spells!4. When in doubt, apply (and reapply!)Why: It’s not enough to just apply sunscreen: you must apply enough, and apply frequently. Studies indicate that most people do not apply nearly as much daylight protection as they should. How much: A teaspoon for the face. For the body, about as much as would fill a shot glass. How often: Re-apply every two hours.

1. Start studying well before the exam. Make sure your schedule provides for sufficient revision time. As any good test-taker will tell you, the revisions are more important than the first time study.

2. Focus on understanding the concepts rather than mugging. Use mnemonics if rote learning is the only way out.

3. Think about the time after the exam. Visualize the happiness on your face when the stressful period is over. This works very well.

4. Keep reminding yourself that your hard work will not go to waste.

5. If you are afraid of tough questions, it helps to know that most questions are of average difficulty and designed to be answered correctly by most examinees.

6. Designate a “study buddy”, a classmate who is an expert in a subject you have trouble in, that you can come to with questions.

7. Get plenty of sleep. It’s way more

stressful to memorize lots of information or comprehend complicated concepts on less than 6 hours sleep.

8. Eat healthy food, since it’s often easier to function on nutritious food than junk. While sugar might be a quick source of energy, sugar lows happen pretty fast and the let-down can often be severe.

9. Exercise. Physical exercise like running, jogging or skipping for 15-20 minutes everyday will make you feel stress free and mentally fit.

10. while taking notes, use as many diagrams, graphs, figures and illustrations as possible. This helps to make several revisions at the last moment!

11. Ask a senior or more knowledgeable person to prepare sample tests for you. If practice tests are available online or in the market, go for them. Many questions are similar to or

verbatim from practice material.

12. On the day of the exam, feel happy! Think

positive and keep cool! Good

luck!

5 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR POOL ALGAE FREE DURING THE SUMMER HEATWell it’s that time of year folks. Summer is here, vacations are being taken left and right, the heat is on, and for some pool owners, this all can equate to that green thing that makes pool ownership a frustrating experience … Algae!

With today’s technology, there’s really no reason anyone should be having problems with algae in the first place. Here is your summer survival list of 5 keys to ensuring your pool doesn’t have problems with the “green monster” during these hot months:

1. Keep your sanitizer levels up!!! For most, this means your chlorine needs to be kept at optimal levels, all day, every day. This is also why we’re such big advocates of salt chlorine generators at River Pools, as they manage to keep a consistent level of chlorine in the pool at all times, preventing the growth of algae in the first place. And for those of you not using salt, make sure to shock your pool at least weekly during this time of year.

2. Keep the water moving: One key to remember is that algae likes to start when water stops, which is why it’s a good idea to always keep your pool water filtering. This is also why most modern pools have variable speed pumps, which allows constant water flow without the high energy usage.

3. Use the pool: Did you know often times the best way of keep a pool clean and free of debris is by swimming in it as much as possible? Yep, that’s certainly the case, and

it’s because swimmers stir up the water and debris, allowing the skimmer to catch more particles and ultimately filtering the pool better.

4. Keep an eye on your filter: This goes back to #2, but if your sand or cartridge get too clogged up, the water will slow down, which can hurt filtration as well as chlorine production...which is bad news.

5. Add an algaecide weekly: Although this isn’t always necessary, it’s another means of algae prevention, and something that certainly won’t hurt your chances of having a hassle-free summer with your pool.

So there you have it, 5 ways to keep your pool algae free during the hot summer months.

WESTERFORD’S CELEBRATION WAS NO LESS THAN THE BESTOn Thursday night, 15 September 2015, hundreds of parents, teachers, students, and several members of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) all bustled into Westerford’s tightly packed hall for the school’s much-awaited Celebration. Celebration is a revered event dedicated to the commemoration of students who have excelled in all aspects of school life during the past year. People who attend the Celebration are continually amazed at just how hard the pupils at Westerford work, and the 2015 Celebration was no exception. The hall, decorated with extravagant bouquets of flowers and a long red carpet for the prize-winners to walk down, was abuzz with excitement and many students were looking forward to see all their perseverance and commitment pay off. The event commenced with the procession of teachers, all wearing their formal academic robes, onto

the stage. This created a sense of grandeur and occasion, and it was accompanied by the singing of the traditional Latin graduation song, “Gaudeamus Igitur”. Mr Graeme Dorrington, the Head of the Board of Governors, then gave a light-hearted welcome, which was followed by the Pupil Review. This consisted of a group of Matrics giving an amusing account of the busy year at Westerford, each one offering a different perspective of the many facets of the school, such as Culture, Sport and Drama. This highlighted just how incredible the school really is, and just how much the pupils and teachers are able to accomplish in such a short period of time.Following this, the highly anticipated head- prefects for 2016 were announced, with these prestigious titles going to Darren Thomas and Katherine Hartzenberg. Lastly, prizes were presented by a guest from the WCED, Ms Deneen Grobler, with three main categories of prizes

being awarded. Sports Awards were given to the top sportsmen and woman; Academic Diplomas were awarded to the highest achieving pupils in each grade; and Major Awards, along with personalized citations, were presented to certain matrics who the teachers felt encompassed all the values of Westerford High School. General trophies were also given for activities such as Public Speaking and Drama. It is an incredible achievement to receive an award, and prize-winners are to be congratulated for all their hard work, dedication and commitment.In-between, the audience was treated to two phenomenal musical numbers, performed by Naomi Fokkens on the violin, and Robyn Quénet-Meintjies on the saxophone. The whole evening was a celebration of all that is good within Westerford, and all the teachers and pupils who, as the school motto suggests, continue to give nothing but their best.
