    EditorialHoly freaking crap!

When I took this project on board I expected tobe putting together a fairly irregular magazine thatmight be read by perhaps twenty odd Adelaideans, and which might be ten pages long each issue.

    How wrong was I!

While actual subscriptions to the mag are fairlylow, I know a lot of people read it straight from

AusBowl and TFF and I have received commen-dations from as far afield as the US, with theZlurpcast guys themselves linking the Strike fromtheir front page!

So thanks to everyone who has contributed thusfar, and if you South Aussies want to get somecontent in, please do! A global audience awaits.

Anyway, this issue is even bigger than last issue, more than 40 pages of stuff. First up we have a

big feature on the Adelaide Dungeon Bowl Cup(ADBC) run by anc001 (Alex) up at Greenacres. His amazing board will be given its own specialarticle in a later issue, but you can see how it all

went down in the feature, and in the specialATaste of Dungeon, grand final article.

Then One Eye (Evan) takes us through how heruns his, undeniably effective, orc teams in TheStrategistbefore I reveal the first crop ofSouthernStrike Hall of Fameinductees.

Finishing the triumvirate of podcast reviews isThree Die Block.

This issues League Pagesare augmented with an-other Cyanide league, this one run by yours truly, the PWND League. Inspired by the old publeague rules, it is anything but average. Of course, the other four local leagues also discuss howthings are progressing and, with two of them nowbetween seasons (AFOUL and SABBL) it is agreat time to get involved.

Steelball Cornerlooks at the interstate oppositionfor AusBowl One. Can the Steelballs bring ithome? It will be tough given the field.

In another new article, Vain (Casper) takes usthrough some of the games biggest names inClash of the Titansbefore we hear from Olaf theStout (Adam) again on his progress in theCCKUP.

MyTeam Gearproduct review this week comparessome of the different options for team transport.

This issue also sees the first Stadia of the Old andNew Worldarticle, bringing you a set of house-rulestadium cards for use in your games.

    So jump in, and enjoy!

The GamesAs an organizer of a gaming event I think most ofus just hope for a smooth day where everyone hasfun, and as such ADBC2011 couldnt have gonemuch better. Dungeon Bowl technically uses thesame rules as Blood Bowl, so its not hard to play, however it does introduce a wide variety of funchallenges (teleporters, explosions, staircases, pittraps etc) that often need a quick double check ofthe procedures. The first game may have been alittle challenging for the coaches who hadntplayed before. To combat this I matched all theDungeon Bowl newbies up against experiencedfolks from our playtesting league, which seemedto work well.

After an hour or so people were really getting intothe swing of things, blocking their opponents into

walls, into exploding chests, and even into thosetreacherous teleporters. Sounds of realisation-Ahhh -were sounding from around the room aspeople started to identify new possibilities thanthose found in normal games of Blood Bowl on aflat grassy field (how boring is that!). Having a kegof beer [amazing home brew - Ed]on hand andcopious supplies of popcorn and snacks leteveryone relax, settle in and have some fun.

Getting people to think outside the box is a realmotivation for me as a TO and as Commissionerof the AFOUL league in Greenacres. So I found itparticularly satisfying for example to watch anaccomplished orc coach realize that the only wayhe could get the ball past two treemen guarding anarrow hallway was to break from his normal styleand pass the ball over the top, rather than bashinga hole through. In this case the brilliant play gaveda Skummi Gitsa win just as time was close toexpiring and that win made the differencebetween second and third place (thus gettingdaGitzinto the grand final matchup). Examples likethis were repeated all throughout the day

The DungeonsEach coach not only got to play a differentopponent in each round but also played on adifferent dungeon in every round. Some dungeons

were wide and well connected, some were narrowwith long hallways and few connecting tunnels, one was full of sewer water and in one particularoccasion the only way the players could get to theball was by going through a teleporter and beinglucky enough to end up in the right spot.

The thing that impressed me most aboutpreparing the dungeons on which we played wasthe ease of each step along the way. Casting is

very easy and rewarding. Hirst Arts moulds areextremely durable, detailed and amazing value. Intwo months I cast the same four moulds around100 times and I am yet to see any degradation ofthe moulds. The plaster takes up paint extremely

well and glues together rock hard with just PVA. Iused only old house paint and the results arefantastic. A dip followed by two progressivelylighter drybrushes gives impressive results. Until Istarted to drybrush the castings I had noappreciation for how extremely well detailed all ofthe surfaces are of each mould. Getting a finalpaint job on these products is easy and veryrewarding. All of the painting in the entire project

would have taken a cumulative total of no morethan a few hours (for approx. 60kg of castings!).

If there is one thing I hope ADBC2011 impartson other hobby minded blood bowl players it is tolet them know how affordable and easy it is totake on a big project like this (my first) usingplaster casting. It really is rewarding to see itprogressively take shape. Check out the blog I

wroteto get more ideas and contact Ian at GriffinGrove Gaming for advice about Hirst Arts moldsand casting in general, hes very helpful.

Anyone who knows me and has had the

unfortunate need to play against me understandsthat I go a little weak at the knees when I starttalking about orcs in Blood Bowl! Ever since thatfirst game of Kerrunch against my bro, I have hada very successful, painful and sometimes illegalrelationship with the greenskin roster, none moreso than my signature team, Da Skummi Gitz.

Da Gitzhave been my number one team sincethose innocent early days and together we havebeen through leagues, tournaments and team

structures with a high level of success, mostly builtaround my personal preference for a mixedplaybook of BASH! with a little flair thrown in.Its always very easy to get sucked into bashingyour opponents silly but unfortunately, as orcssuffer from a fair lack of speed across the board, acoach always needs to set a solid platform beforeattempting a TD and for that to work, playerplacement is paramount to the teams success, both in attack and defence. The worst mistake youcan make with the lower movement teams is to

bash for five or six turns before turning yourattention to scoring a touchdown. Its fine if youhave succeeded in smooshing eight or nine of theopponents players (I wish!) but an absolutenightmare if you still face a nearly full team andyoure yet to make it more than a couple ofsquares into your opponents half.

The RosterThe greatest benefit of the greenskins roster isthat you have access to four each of the two main

positionals in the team, black orcs and blitzers. Ialways pay specific attention to my blitzers early inthe teams development as I feel they are integralto the teams success, outside of the normalbashing tactics. A blitzers strength is in its above-average stats and access to strength/general skills,

which means that after just a couple of increasesyou can mould these four players into any numberof defensive weapons, scoring machines ormurdering psychotics! They are a very adaptable

piece so the building of a team around them justmakes sense and will set your team up for earlysuccess (Disclaimer: One Eye takes noresponsibility for Nufflings, failed GFIs orDouble Skulls when attempting said success!).

SkillsSkill preferences really do come down to how youplay your team but in my travels I have foundsome of my choices to be strange to othercoaches (bugger off ya gitz my way is right!). My

own personal preference for progression is to skillup two blitzers with Guard very very early andthen the other two with a combination of Frenzy,

Tackle or Strip Ball. Why you ask? Well the guardsare simply for the cage. By taking Guard early on,you turn a orc cage from difficult to crack to nearimpossible! A slow moving cage of ST4 black orcsassisted with guarding blitzers is a tough nut tocrack even for similarly strengthened teams andcan force your opponent into making very riskyblocks, which is always a benefit (unless they

succeed of course and then youre screwed!). Nowadd in Tackle for those pesky fast rats and elveswhich just leaves Frenzy. I know some would findit an odd choice but its one of those type of skillsthat not only allows you as the coach tomanipulate your opponents positioning (as wellas the obvious crowd-surfing benefits) but itsbiggest advantage I find is how the skill works

when your not even using it! Ive lost count of theamount of times I have heard a coach ask OK,so that is your Frenzy guy, right? or I have

watched them count out the number of squares

The Strategist - Orcs with One EyeRight den... Da umie editor as asked mez ta give

    11/50

    Page 11The Strategist

the Frenzy player is from his own players! Its justone of those skills that has the opponent coach onedge all game and it is game-altering as well. Thatsecond hit to take down a possible touchdownscorer or crowd-surfing an opponents best playeris just too valuable to pass over, just ask myopponents!

For black orcs, Block and Guard come first withperhaps a Mighty Blow thrown in, againreinforcing my defensive attitude over offence.Mighty Blow will help with the casualty rates butId prefer to be safe with Block first over plus oneto armour/injury. Break Tackle is also a goodaddition as a secondary skill, only because youalready have four specialised blitzers so the needto get a strength four fella out to blitz isnt asnecessary as it is for other teams like lizardmen.

Once you throw iaST5Troll to the mix youhave one of the mostpowerful teams in thegame. The ability toposition five ST4 plusplayers up front withanother fourmanoeuvrable andadaptable blitzers downback allows the team topack a powerful punchthat not many teams

    would be able toendure.

The final (and perhapsmost controversial)piece to discuss is the thrower. I have heard somany different ideas and preferred skill ups fororc throwers that I myself doubt every choice Imake with them but I can never go past the triedand tested Accurate, Leader and Block choicesfirst up. I, like all experienced orc coaches would, have a very volatile history with my throwers asthey somehow manage to become snake-eyemagnets at only the worst possible time! I am yetto see a positional in Blood Bowl as painful toplay as the orc and human throwers but I always

have one there for the Sure Hands security.

DefenceIf I was honest (not a chance!), I always get moreenjoyment when defending rather than attacking

with orcs. Caging up the field can get a bitmundane after the 150th time but defendingalways throws up new challenges and obstacles. My aim in every game is to put the pressure onmy opponent from the beginning and turn thescrews slowly, making it necessary for them to gofor risky plays or unlikely chances. Nothing canhold back an avalanche of high dice but ensuringan opponent needs to make numerous rolls before

attempting a scoring opportunity is tacticallysmart no matter what race you use. My favouriteteams to defend against are the slow movingdwarves and undead/Khemri, not because theyare slow but because youre not likely to bash

them into submission sotherefore stalling themand restricting theirmovement down thefield is a tough andtactical battle I really

    enjoy. None of that MA9malarkey!

The key to defendingwith orcs lies with yourbest positional players, your blitzers. MA6 withBlock is key to defendingyour line early on in theteams development

    while a strong frontline

of black orcs forces youropponents into using additional players to getthose two dice blocks or risking dodging away.

Whatever the layout of your defensive line, thereis always THAT moment in an orc defence wherethe opportunity to charge in and cage around theball carrier is almost impossible to resist, butnever forget to leave a few strategically placedplayers down the backlines in case a breakoutoccurs. Apart from dwarfs, you will be left eatingdust by most races so key placement of your

    blitzers is paramount.

  • 8/7/2019 Southern Strike Issue 4

    12/50

    Page 12The Strategist

By leaving two blitzers in a defensive position, you can manoeuvre swiftly to counter any threatsas well as having the relative speed to take thefight from defence to attack quickly when needed.

This is where the guard comes into play for yourdefences and is why I value a couple of these skillsearly on.

OffenseCage cage cage! Orcs just dont have the speed torush a couple of players downfield and get farenough away that only a couple of defenders canreach you (like skaven or wood elves can) andpassing with orcs is as risky as that woman whoalways stands by the corner near your house!

When in doubt, cage it out!! Whether you start thecage midfield and pound downfield or you want afaster moving cage down the sideline, always takeyour time and factor in any possible chinks inyour placement. One badly set player can bringdown even the strongest cage and that can spelldisaster but there is no better feeling than anopponent throwing players against a well formedcage and watching it hold out as it trudges all the

way down the field! Truly orcy Blood Bowl dat iz!

The Fast RacesYes Im talking about those fast little blighters likethe skaven and wood elves, truly un-orcy racesthat can be the bane of orcish Blood Bowl! Its notessentially the high movement that tends to causemy lads issues, as (as mentioned before) I alwayserr on the side of caution by ensuring I have acouple of blitzers back in a defensive position, equipped with Tackle and Block ready to deal

with the fast buggers. What tends to causedifficulties is the ability of these races to slip

between the tiny cracks in your cage and causedisaster with relative ease (or so it seems when Iplay them!!). Nothing can stop crazy dice but

when you watch a single wardancer leap throughyour six orc cage, two dice block against to POWdown the ball carrier then dodge, pick-up the balland dodge clear, the little green goblin deep withinme does shed a tear in pain normally thoughthe goblin morphs into a steaming, rage-filled troll

who goes out of his way to pound any and allelves for the rest of his Blood Bowl playing lifebut thats another long session with mypsychiatrist

How do you avoid such blatant cheating by elvenand skaven players? Well you could bash themsilly (the players not the coach.hmmm wellactually) but you will soon find any seasonedcoach will regularly score and by the time youhave cut the elven team numbers in half, youcould already be two to three tries [bloody rugby

players - Ed]down. The best way is to play thenatural bashing game but ensure you haveadequate players behind the ball who can react ifthat horror result happens and the bounding elfappears from your carefully planned cage with theball. My cage will always involve a few guards, lotsof Block and high strength but you simply cannotsit back and think you are safe against the fast andagile teams. They may well fail numerous timestrying to break the cage but all it takes is one goodhit to spill the ball and no races recover a free balllike the rats and the girly-elves do! Beware the fastraces and dont forget defence do so at yourperil young orciwans!

SS Hall of Fame Inductees 2011Well folks, the nominees are in their seats and the hostess has the envelope, welcome tothe inaugural South Australian Blood Bowl Hall of Fame induction ceremony, 2011.

The induction is in two parts. First, the Star inductees, as voted by you in five catego-ries. Each category - the Gauntlet, Helmet, Cod Piece, Garter and Ribbon - will beawarded for the first time and will take their perpetual name from their first winner.

Next, the Champion inductees will also be listed. Champions are any coach that haswon a tournament or league that is supported by the Southern Strike. In future yearsthis will be for the year in question, but in this inaugural year we will recognise all

coaches for all seasons of the tournaments and leagues involved.

An arcane mechanical gauntlet of unknown origin, the VainGauntlet glows with a strange, green, inner light. It is awardedto the Coach voted most brutal during a year, for fouling, knocking out, crippling or killing their opponents.

The technical quality of 3DBis similar to the Zlurpcast; itisnt anything mindblowinglyspectacular, but it is of a pro-fessional standard with noissues in regard to sound qual-ity and some good segmentsegues.

I have to make note of theirtheme song too. I dont know who it is and Idont know why, but I get it stuck in my head andI really like it.

Finally, while some will see it as a plus and some aminus, 3DB can be long. Really long. An hour anda half is pretty standard and, while this is some-times analogous to the Zlurpcast, it can be fairlyintense at times. I dont necessarily mind myself, but others may have different preferences.

The second criteria, however, is where 3DB reallyshines.

The structure of 3DB is to start up by discussing aparticular team, move on to a fairly random mid-dle segment (where they can discuss anything) andthen to finish off with a wrap up of their localleagues.

Now, when I say discuss in regard to these

guys, what I actually mean is dissect, pick through

the innards, mix it all around a bit, put it back to-gether and sew it back up. They dont do it byhalves.

In the first segment they will quite literally take ateam to bits, going over how to put together afunctioning roster, how to run the team, several

play styles for it along with spe-cific defensive and offensiveplays, how to develop the ros-

ter and how to play against theteam (which is, in many ways, just as important as how to playas the team).

Now, if this was a fairly newpodcast I might worry aboutthe quality of this advice, but3DB has done enough episodesto have dissected every singleteam and come back for sec-

onds. No, really, they are actu-ally on their second round of looking at all theteams and have revisited the orcs, humans, Nur-gles rotters and norse.

Personally I think they do an excellent job withthis advice. I am a long-time human player and Igot a lot out of listening to their ideas about howa human team should be played. I have alsopicked up some tips about playing against otherteams.

They have also started looking at the specificminiatures a Coach might use to construct a par-ticular team, which is a great new development.

Their second segment can vary. One show theymight do a debate between them (the guys arecalled Pauly and Chance by the way) on the rela-tive merits of a particular rule or controversy (thishas become more common recently). The nextshow they might look at a particular tactical ploy

that applies across the board and subject it to the

    19/50

    Page 19Podcast Review

same rigour as the teams segment. Whatever it is,it is generally well thought out and very in-depth.

Finally, the last segment is a wrap up their localscene and, like the Zlurpcast, this can tend to havelimited relevance to people outside their specificsphere of influence. Yes, it can be interesting tohear about how the teams they are familiar withare developing, and you can get something out ofthat. But I still always feel a bit like an outsiderlooking in, which is unavoidable.

But all up the informative content of 3DB is al-most overwhelming and makes it well worth a lis-ten for novices and experienced coaches alike.

In the entertainment stakes I should make onething clear. While Zlurpcast is all about the enter-tainment, 3DB is all about the advice. It is cer-tainly not an unentertaining podcast; the guys ban-ter well and keep up a steady stream of good na-tured jibes while they talk. But this isnt its pri-mary goal.

Having said that, the guys definitely have a senseof humour and Ill often find myself chucklingalong. They do take the time to do specifically en-tertainment-focused segments fairly regularly. TheBlockies (Blood Bowls answer to the Logies)

was a great recent example, and the Christmassong collection they did in December was hands-down hilarious! I was laughing out loud at the busstop.

As far as support goes, 3DB doesnt offer any-thing huge. They have a website, but it is reallyjust a spot for them to put the new episodes up. Ibelieve they also have a Twitter stream, althoughthe guys were specifically saying in a recent epi-sode that it has been some time since they used it.

The guys do run some competitions every nowand then, and with their sponsorship from Im-pact! Miniatures they are able to offer some greatprizes here.

But really, when you get down to it, the biggestthing they offer is their breakdown of tactics and

strategy, which is nothing to shake a stick at.

I am actually going to add another quick criteria inhere too that I missed from the Zlurpcast review;regularity.

This one occurred to me while I fruitlessly waitedfor the next TZB cast, and it is undeniably an im-portant aspect. In this respect 3DB, and theZlurpcast for that matter, are excellent. You canexpect a regular dose of 3DB twice each month,or roughly every fortnight. Given the length of theshow, thats quite a feat.

So, all up, if you are after a podcast that is goingto break it down and expose the minutiae, 3DB isthe one youre after. Chance and Pauly offer theblow-by-blow that you can count on to really de-

velop your skills, whether you are a complete ama-teur or a seasoned veteran. I highly recommend it.

Keep up the great work guys, it is greatly appreci-ated.

When I say discuss inregard to these guys, whatI actually mean is dissect, pick through the innards,

mix it all around a bit, put itback together and sew it

back up. They dont do it byhalves.

A Taste of Dungeon - ADBC FinalIt had been a crazy day in the dungeon. Throughfour rounds of off-target teleporters, into-the-wallblitzes, chest-explosions and trap doors, the teamscompeting in the Adelaide Dungeon Bowl Cup(ADBC) had been whittled down to just two final-ists: the Cheeseheads, coached by Olaf the Stout(Adam) and da Skummi Gitzcoached by One Eye(Evan).

Confronting these teams was perhaps the most

insane, most amaz-ing, and most bril-liantly evil dungeonever assembled forthe sport. Thetournament Com-missioner (andleague Commishfor the AFOUL)anc001 (Alex) hadput hours of work

into the dungeonthat spanned nineseparate foot-square board sec-tions and featuredan undergroundriver, raised sections

with stairs and sheerdrops, pit traps, oddrooms and many different paths to victory. Theplayers were about to find out just how tough it

would be to play over this incredible board.

To start the game each player assembled their firstsix players at the doors on each side of the pitch.Da Gitztook the higher ground while the Cheese-headsstarted in the lower area of the dungeon.

They both started with a mad scramble outwards, looking for the ball that was hidden in one of sixchests scattered across the dungeon (of course, those chests that didnt have the ball were packed

with black powder and featured an ingenious,

dwarf-made flint trigger that sparked when the

chest was opened with explosive consequences).

Da Gitzmoved left and right to try and recoverthe chests, but they were stopped in their tracks asthe call went through the dungeon that the ball

was loose. The Cheeseheadshad managed to find itearly in the chest located in the storeroom, theonly spot in the dungeon with bricked-up walls.

From here the mad scramble was on as the skaven

regrouped and triedto work out how torun the gauntlet ofthe orc defence. Theorcs also drew backand waited for theskaven to showtheir hand.

It didnt take long, the skaven working

as a unit and attack-ing towards the lefthand side of thedungeon (as they

would see it). DaGitzmet them at the

bend in the river and ascrum soon developed.

But it proved to be a feint by the skaven and, leav-ing their more resilient stormvermin to hold up

the orcs, three gutter runners suddenly broke awayfrom the melee and sprinted along the river to theright, aiming for the wooden bridge and toting theball with them.

The orcs followed and, despite their speed deficitcompared to the skaven, they made decent head-

way, getting to the bridge before the skaven couldcross. Undeterred, however, the Cheeseheadgutterrunners kept running out to the right and tried tooutflank the orcs around the rivers end.

The final dungeon in all its glory.

  • 8/7/2019 Southern Strike Issue 4

    24/50

    Page 24Match Report

But the orcs, benefiting from being on the shortside of the river, were there to greet them as theyrounded the small lakes shore.

It was a point to be argued whether or not theycould sneak even further around, but the Cheese-headswere in no mood to take the fight to the orcsand decided discretion was the better part of val-our. They retreated once again, and tried toscramble back to the other side of the dungeonbefore the orcs could get there.

This was slightly more effective and they arrivedin force to assist the remaining stormverminagainst one orc and a goblin.

It was about this time that the skaven melee man-aged to topple one of the orcs into the river. Asthe hapless greenskin flailed around, he happene dto put a foot down and, to his surprise, touchedthe bottom! Yes, thats right, the river, previouslyseeming like an impenetrable barrier, was actuallyfordable by either team - they had neglected toread the rules properly and didnt realise!

But it was slightly too late as the skaven swungaround for their final push. And push they did!

The orcs were forced to give a little bit of ground

and the gutter runner with the ball was halfway upthe spiral staircase on the extreme left side (as theskaven saw it) of the dungeon before the orcscaught him.

Things got ugly quickly though as, now that theCheeseheadshad fully committed, da Gitzbroughtthe full force of their team down on them, withjust (Just!?!) a chainsaw wielding lunatic hangingback as defence.

A well-placed block later and the ball had spilledfree, but with tacle zones everywhere it was goingto be difficult for either team to get hold of it.

Things were arguably more desperate for theCheeseheads. Their final push had been stalled andthey had lost two players to the Dazed (KOd)bin, while all the orcs were going strong. If theylost the ball now they would almost certainly bedefended out of the game as the orcs steamrolledthe ball back through the dungeon for a score. Asthe time limit had already been reached, the firstscore would win the game.

But skaven are nothing if not flea-ridden, disease-spreading, dodgy little rodents and they dug deepfor one last effort!

The Cheeseheads, the ball in theirpossession, con-

front the Gitzscrum near thelarge bend in theriver before decidingto leg it back theway they came.

  • 8/7/2019 Southern Strike Issue 4

    25/50

    Page 25Match Report

First, one of the stormvermin sucked up his fearand confronted the chainsaw. With a well-placedblock he toppled the orc from the stairs, out ofthe way. Then, with super-skaven reflexes, one ofthe gutter runners decided it was time for some-thing heroic. With the kind of agility usually only

seen amongst elves he scooped up the ball andsteeled himself for the dodges he needed to make.

In an amazing feat of nimbleness he avoided theswinging green fists and emerged unscathed onthe other side with the ball still tucked neatly un-der one furry arm. A quick hop and a skip laterand he was out the door, leadingthe Cheeseheadsto

    victory!

In the end it was a very interesting victory, and an

amazing game to watch. It could have been verydifferent if the two coaches had realised theycould wade into the river, but then the rule essen-tially meant that each water square counted fortwo points of Movement, so the orcs may havebeen well out of their depth (so to speak) if theytried pushing through, potentially allowing theskaven to easily out-flank them and win.

In the end it came down to a bit of luck to popfree of the final contest for the win after a long,

back-and-forth process that saw both the skaven

and orcs respectively doing what they were bestat, offense and defence.

Congratulations to Olaf (Adam) who took out thefinal accolades (thats two local inaugural tourna-ments hes managed to win, this and the SSB08)

and a massive congratulations for anc001 (Alex),whos amazing efforts were on show to all. Letshope the ADBC can become an annual event.

Adelaide Fantasy Open Under LightsAFOUL updateSeason Three Week ThreeSeason Three kicked off at the start of February,

with seven regular teams and hopes of a few moreto join in as the season progresses.

With two rookie ogre teams it has been an inter-

esting start to the season. Along with the orcs, dwarves and chaos dwarves this has made forquite a brutal and physical league so far. Despitethis it has been the elves and lizardman teams thathave held the top of the ladder.

Roster management has taken an increased focusthis season, with an ever changing list of freeagents to purchase for your team. Unlike star play-ers the free agents have not peaked and can gain

SPP, though they usually only have a fewskills unlike star players. On the other handhowever, each time a player skills up thereis a chance he will demand a raise, so thereis a real challenge in developing a goodteam without becoming reliant on a few keyplayers.

League rules also allow for a fired player'ssalary to be recouped in full, and so roster

management is more like a salary cap sys-tem, allowing teams to change players andstrategies week to week.

Teams are also allowed to purchase perma-nent staff for their team, Bloodweiserbabes, master chefs, wizards, assistantcoaches and cheerleaders. Having suitablepainted miniatures to represent team staffgives bonuses to their effectiveness.

Week one saw the addition of a special induce-ment, a hitman to take out an opposing player onhis way to the game.

Week two saw plenty of trash-talk on the forums, which stirred up the fans.

Week three's match of the week earned both

    teams triple winnings

Weeks one to three also saw the debut of a snot-ling pump wagon, although in week three it wasirreparably destroyed byMorg N Thorg, never toreturn to the pitch.

Southern Adelaide BB LeagueSeason OneBeing the first season I've everrun I have decided to makesome changes to the way thingsare happening in the league, firstof all due to some confusion forsome of the coaches I've de-cided to drop the Super 7's forseason two and concentrate onthe 'Premier League'..

Second of all the Dead Pool hasbeen dropped, too many hassles

    with it (mostly for me)..

It was a tight season with onlythree points between first andfourth place at the end of Roundten.

After a gruelling first season, its

finally over and a clear cut winner was decided inthe Grand Final..

SABBL Grand FinalThe Grand Final was played between the CincinattiBowties(amazon) and the Mighty Ducks(wood elf).

After taking everyone's tip for the winner, it wasclear cut that theMighty Duckswere the favouriteto win. But the Cincinatti Bowtieswere determinedand were going to bring it to the Ducks.

First turn saw the Bowtiessend four of the Ducksto the dead and injured section, the Ducksplayedtheir usual game of dodge, pass and run. After thefirst turn it was extremely evenly matched, itstayed tied at 1-0 for the majority of the game.

With the Ducksleading and all the other Coacheswatching on in awe, every decision was crucial. The Bowtiesbroke through with some dodgy dodg-ing... TD!!

It was all tied at 1-1 on turn 15, everyone thinking

that we were going to go into extra time. The Bow-tieswere kicking off to the Ducks, and the kickofftable revealed a BLITZ!! The Duckshad left a gapin the middle and two of the amazons shotthrough and took out the elf catcher! The Ducks

were in a state of panic now, risking everything, but to no avail.

The Bowtieshad the Ducksnow, and scored withease..

FINAL RESULT 2-1 Bowties(amazon) win, and abig congratulations to Drew Stearman for winningthe Skeletal Hand Cup.

Season TwoSeason 2 has brought some new faces and lost acouple (due to work commitments)

There are two divisions in the SABBL now.

Publicans Wager ND LeagueThe Publicans Wager Non-Diverse League (PWND for short) is a different style of league that harksback to the pub rules introduced in an old Citadel Journal. The basic idea is that only human teamscan compete, and only with very strict, and identical, rosters (1 blitzer, 1 catcher, 1 thrower, 9 linemen,2 rerolls and 2 fan factor). Treasury funds can only be used to replace dead players and buy a Blood-

weiser babes inducement for each match.

The story goes that 12 Old World publicans, meeting for their annual conference, decided to hold atournament to prove who was best. Each team represents one pub and is allocated a colour associated

with that pub. Below is the original 12 pubs, their proprietor, location, colour, allocated coach andteam name:

The idea is to set up a system whereby the starting conditions are identical, perhaps to let the coach-ing prowess of each Coach rise to the fore instead of differences between the different races.

Round One: The Orcs HeadRound one, to be held in the Orcs Head tavern, just outside of Barak Varr in the Border Princes, isjust getting underway this week. As noted above, Shady Omar and Musharad Saracen were unable tofield a team, so ten pub-based teams have joined in what should be a jolly romp through the Old

World. The round one draw is:

    Steelball CornerD-Day is upon us.

In just a few days the SA Steelballs will step aboard the plane to Sydney to compete in the first Aus-Bowl state of origin tournament. I think I can talk for all of the team when I say it is an honour torepresent SA at the event, which looks like it will be a fantastic, and enduring, event in AustralianBlood Bowl.

You will almost certainly find out the results of the weekend before next issue, but we will provide ablow-by-blow account of what went down when we went up against the might of the other states.

And mighty they will be, make no mistake. The NSW team sports some of the best coaches, as shownby NAF statistics, in not just Australia but the world. The ACT, likewise, has some incredibly experi-enced coaches in it. The other teams dont have the same level of expertise, but they are still some ofthe best players available and it will be great if we can hold our own with some of these guys andmaybe, just maybe, bring home the trophy.

For those that havent been following it, six states will now compete in AusBowl One:

The Premiers - NSWVery up-front about their intentions in their very name, the NSW team will be almost unstoppable.

Rabid_Bogscum (James) - wood elf #1 in Australia, #15 in the worldDoubleskulls (Ian) - orc #1 in Australia, #2 in the worldGrumpsh (Iain) - chaos dwarf #1 in Australia, #7 in the world

GardenGnome (Brendan) - dark elf #3 in Australia, #35 in the worldD_Arquebus (Daniel) - undead #3 in Australia, #43 in the world

Tribalsinner (Pete) - dwarf #2 in Australia, #25 in the world

Two of the NSW team (Daniel and Brendan) have demonstrated their prowess at the Southern ShrikeBowl, D_Arquebus winning in 2010.

These guys are, quite frankly, the team to beat and firm favourites to take out the tourney.

The PMs IV- ACTApparently picked by Julia herself, the ACT boys havent been as open about their creden-tials, but Rabid is on record as saying he could see them providing some competition to theSydneysiders.

Azza (Aaron) - dwarf Big A (Andrew) - wood elf Avulling (Andrew) - necromantic Cutts (Anthony) - skavenBeefyGoodness (Ben) - undead Grimrod_Waaghfist (Rod) - orc

Slow to get their team together you might wonder whether they really have the best

coaches available. But all the tipping places them second and they cant be underestimated.

There is no denying that the biggest name in the

game isMorg n Thorg. An immensely powerful, rabidly bloodthirsty and surprisingly capable ogrewho has dominated the sport for years, bringingthe Chaos All Starsto multiple Blood Bowls beforefollowingGriffslead and going freelance.

So he is awesome, in all meanings of the word, but is he thebest? Is he the most dominant forceis Blood Bowl today?

Well the fans of the undead, necromantic and

Khemri coaches would have you think otherwise, and some might even bring up points other thanThat bum wont play for our team!

Some of our older readers may recall that, early inMorgscareer it was not unusual to see him stridingalong flanked by werewolves, skeletons ormummies, but that all changed afterMorgplayed amatch for Tomolandrys Champions of Death. Thestory goes that Tomolandrybelieved that he had thejuice to bring backMorgshould he be involved in

a fortunately fatal accident on the field. Thefamous necromancer even went as far asarrangingRamtut IIIto throw a few friendly blockstowardsMorgthroughout the game to help theprocess along. As we all knowMorgsurvived, barely, and now has a strong distrust ofnecromancers and a stronger hatred of the

    wrapped behemoth Ramtut.

Morg n Thorgis a pricey catch at 430,000 goldpieces for one game, but comes with some

    amazing stats.

He is agile (for an ogre) and incredibly strong (foranyone) and his proficiency in Block-ing makeshim an incredible blitzer. Many coaches takeadvantage of this by placing the ball into his handson a touchback, getting him to pick up the ballunder his own steam, or even passing to him afterhe has made a mess of an opponents back field. His speed is average for the position of blitzer buta credit to his race and years of playing has madehis body as hard as carved stone, you have as

much chance of injuring a treeman as you dogettingMorgto feel a rabbit punch, and even ifyou do get him down his Thick Skull reduces thechances of getting him off the pitch.

The one thing that has truly made him a legend ishis brain. No, really,Morghas an amazing grasp of

what is going on around him and is able to focuson killing, maiming, carrying, and evenoccasionally passing, the ball for a whole game. Inmy memory the only other ogre able to do that

was current announcer Bob Bifford, and he neverattempted the really tricky stuff like passing.

But what of his eternal rival?

Ramtut IIIcomes a bit cheaper at 380,000 goldpieces (that is enough to get a Bloodweiser babewith the change) and while similarly strong is builtfor a totally different role. Ramtutlives for the lineof scrimmage and can hold that line against a

whole Blood Bowl team by himself. Well, that is ifyou consider theMoot Muffintopshalfling team areal team. Again, incredibly strong, Ramtutlacksthe agility or speed thatMorghas, so while the ballmay be safe in his hands it will take the entiredrive of purposeful striding for Ramtutto make it

to the touchdown line. Ramtutalso lacks the sheer

The Coachs Diary - A Stout Tale Pt 2When we last left the Cheeseheadsthings were goingpretty well. The first six games had been a littlerough injury-wise with a couple of linerats killedand as well as serious injuries to In A Can, the ratogre and Feta, the thrower. However, with a 4-2-0record, everything was definitely on track for theteam to make the CCKUP finals in their debutseason. Then the Commish announced a forfeitamnesty was in place. Games that were forfeitedin previous roundscould be played over

the Christmas breakin the season forChristmas if bothcoaches agreed.

Now the Cheeseheadswere the beneficiariesof a forfeit against alizardman team inround one of the sea-son after my oppo-

nent came down with a bad case of the flu. Hethen dropped out of the league soon after and thelizzies were replaced with a dwarf team. Great Ithought, I can play the make-up game and get afew extra SPP's to help skill up my players. I didrealise that dwarves (with all their Tackle andBlock) was not a great match-up for skaven, but Ihad already faced a dwarf and chaos dwarf teamearlier in the season without any major dam-age. There is also the indisputable fact that play-ing Blood Bowl is great fun, so I decided to re-

play my round one forfeit, knowing that I hadmuch more to lose than I had to gain (and boy

    was I right about that).

Round 1 Re-match vs Short n Salty (dwarf)Please Nuffle, I don't know what I did to offendyou so, but please forgive me!!! Was it the NuffleRocks! dice? Is that what it was? I wasn't tryingto offend, I thought you would like people sayingthat you "rocked". What do you want me to do toatone? I'll sacrifice a set of dice, I'll pray to you

more often, I'll do whatever you want. I only ask

that you never again give me luck like I had in thisgame.I know people often talk about having "the worst

dice luck EVARRRR!!!" after a bad game. I knowI've definitely complained about dice that haven'tfallen my way before. This game, however, is eas-ily the worst dice luck I have experience in a gameof Blood Bowl in either a tabletop gameor online. My luck in this game was so horrible

that by the second halfof the game I

was laughing as I failedyet another roll.

That's not to say that Ididn't get angry orfrustrated, far fromit. I'm not normallyone to swear, but Idropped the "F-Bomb" on several oc-casions during the

game. It didn't help that my bad luck seemed tocoincide with some pretty good luck for my oppo-nent. I don't want to take anything away fromhim, because he won this game convincingly, buteven he began to comment on how hot his dice

were. My memory of the game is a little hazy as Ithink my brain has shut out those memories tosave me from further mental trauma. Here is

    what I do remember though.

The dwarves won the kick-off and elected to re-

ceive. Three blocks and one blitz later and I had acouple of rats on the ground and a couple in theKO box. Trying to take advantage of the dwarfslack of speed, I tried my usual tactic of rushinggutter runners into the backfield to try and get tothe ball carrier before he could get into acage. However, with Tackle all over the place, one of my gutter runners failed a dodge and, evenafter using a team re-roll, he was not able to keephis feet. The dwarfs took advantage of this andproceeded to do what dwarfs do best, cage up and

    grind down the field.

Please Nuffle, what do you want me todo to atone? I'll sacrifice a set of dice,I'll pray to you more often, I'll do what-

ever you want. I only ask that younever again give me luck like I had in

    this game.

The second half began and again all 11 dwarfswere placed on the LOS. Ok, I thought, this isn'ttoo bad. The double skulls ruined the plan lasthalf, but let's try this again. I found a weak spotin the line where I could make a hole for one ofmy gutter runners to run through. He would needto make a three plus and then a two plus dodgebut if he got through the dwarfs wouldn't be ableto catch him.

Then Nuffle gave me a small ray of hope as aHigh Kick was rolled. I eagerly moved my gutterrunner under the ball and then sighed loudly as Irolled a one for thecatch.

Still, all things consid-ered, I was in as gooda position as could behoped. I mademy blocks and cre-ated the hole Ineeded for my othergutter runner to runthrough. Then camethe pick-up and the hand-off from gutter runnerto gutter runner, both two plus rolls. I can't re-member exactly what happened but yet anotherone was rolled, another F-bomb was dropped anda team re-roll was burned (which thankfully suc-ceeded). Then came the dodging. First dodge roll

with a three plus needed, I rolled a two and thanksto Tackle the gutter runner went down (and withit my last shred of hope).

From here the game was a bit of a blur. By turnnine I was down to just three players again. De-spite that I was able to knock the ball carrier overon three separate occasions. However, with theirhuge player advantage, the dwarfs were easily ableto recover the ball each time, eventually leading toa walk-in score around turn 13. At some time inthe second half Nuffle decided to kick me while I

was down. My Guard stormvermin was killed soI called in the apoth to save the day.......and rolleda second dead result. :-(

At this point I think I was over it all and justlaughing at my horrible luck. I failed six out of six

KO rolls before setting up for turn 14 (makingthat ten failed four plus KO rolls in a row), leav-ing me with just two players on the pitch, a storm-

vermin and a gutter runner. By the book I couldhave ended the game here without any pen-alty. Bugger that though. I may have been gettingabsolutely smashed, but there was no way that I

    was quitting.

With two players left I changed my goal signifi-cantly. Rather than trying to score, I figured thatmaybe I could get a skill on my remaining storm-

vermin. He was on five SPP, all I needed was acompleted pass. I setmy two players up onthe LOS as requiredand then dodged mygutter runner away tomove next to theball.....and rolled an-other one!!! A Tack-ling longbeard saw thegutter runner hit thedeck, but thankfully he

wasn't injured. Withbasically nothing to stop them, the dwarfsswarmed into my backfield and scored a rare two-turn TD.

After that TD I then proceeded to fail another sixout of six KO rolls, taking my tally to 16 consecu-tive failed four plus KO rolls (a one in 65,536chance) and once again set up my two players forthe final turn of the game. At this point Nufflemust have decided that I had suffered enough as I

was finally able to dodge both remaining playersaway from the LOS, pick the ball up and completea pass for my sole SPP for the game. This led tothe only positive point in the game as I rolled a sixand a five for his skill in the post-game and tookan agility boost.

So with that I turned my 4-2-0 record into a 3-2-1record and killed a skilled stormvermin in theprocess. Not bad for a day's work. :-/

On the plus side I did roll reasonably well for win-nings and, all things considered, it could havebeen a lot worse. I had enough money to replacethe stormvermin and my thrower, Feta, would bereturning from his serious injury a little bit morefragile (-AV), but still able to compete. That gaveme 13 players for my next match against Mark'skangaroo-themed slaan team, the Killer Kangas.

Round 7 vs Killer Kangas (slaan)I went into this match expecting it to be a highscoring affair and it definitely lived up to thoseexpectations. I'd never played with or againstslaan before so I was heading into the unknownto a certain extent. I did know that they had areputation for being really difficult to stop on of-fence but lacked much in the way of hittingpower. After what had happened last game that

    was fine by me!

Despite the Sweltering Heat a big crowd of 33,000fans turned up to see some free flowing BloodBowl. The Kangaswon the toss and elected to re-ceive. Thankfully, for players and fans alike, somecloud cover rolled in, bringing temperatures backdown to nice levels.

The Kangaslined up heavily stacked to one side ofthe field and the ball scattered towards the massof froggies as if it was made of metal and the play-ers were some kind of giant magnet! Unsurpris-ingly, the Kangasattacked with most of their team

down one of the flanks and into range for atouchdown the following turn. With a bit ofdodging I was able to make a two dice block onthe ball carrier and take him down. The ball scat-tered out of bounds and was thrown back into theskaven backfield. It was somewhat protected, butthere were no skaven that hadnt moved that were

within reach of the ball to try and pick it up. Soon turn two Shimma, slaan catcher extraordinairesimply leapt over the defence, picked up the ballin a tackle zone, made a dodge and a GFI toscore. Just two turns in and I was already down1-0!

On defence the Kangasset up very conservatively.Mark hid his precious slaan catchers behind ascreen of blitzers and linemen. While thisstopped them from being blitzed, it also left bothflanks wide open for my gutter runners to run intothe backfield. The slaan tried to mark them up,but a typical move-pass-move-hand off-move-score from thrower to gutter runner to gutter run-ner saw the game easily tied back up by turn three.

Once again the Kangasheavily stacked their teamdown one flank on the restart and again the ball

was drawn towards their pack of players like theyhad a string attached to it. This time though thekick-off table showed Blitz and, with the slaan sotightly bunched together, numerous skaven wereable to run into their backfield and surroundthem. One of the gutter runners was even able toget himself underneath the kick and catch it! Un-able to take him down with a Blitz, the Kangaslatched a Diving Tackle blitzer onto him to tryand keep him in place.

LuckilyFeta, the Cheeseheadthrower was posi-tioned next to him. A simple hand-off to Feta, followed by a Short Pass to gutter runnerMarsca-

pone, who had dodged away from his marker and itwas 2-1 at the end of turn four! At this point I wasfeeling pretty good about the game situation, de-spite increasing my streak of consecutive failedKO rolls to 19 with three more failed rolls.

Undeterred, the slaan set up on offence again inexactly the same fashion as the previous twotimes. Once again the ball, despite being aimed ata totally different area of the pitch to last time, scattered right back towards the pack of slaan.

Just like they did at the start of the game, the slaanpushed down oneflank and were ableto make a relativelysimple two turnscore, tying thescores at 2-2, but giv-ing the Cheeseheadsthree turns in whichto grab a 3-2 lead athalf time.

The slaan again leftthe wide zones freefor the gutter runners to charge down into. Thistime though a couple of the blitzers were able totake down one of them and mark up Brie, the

AG5 superstar with Diving Tackle. Trying to setup a turn seven score, Brierolled a double two forhis Dodge and stunned himself on the turf.

This left just one linerat within scoring range forthe Cheeseheads. Strangely, instead of Blitzing himto eliminate the chance of a score, they sur-rounded him forcing me to make a five plusdodge attempt if I wanted to score. Bugger that Ithought. I filled in the gaps with other skavenplayers and then used my rat ogre, In A Can, toFrenzy chain-push the linerat out of the scrum. Asimple three plus dodge and he was out and run-ning into the end zone to wait for a pass.

Unfortunately that was where my luck ran out. Afailed two plus Hand-Off from gutter runner togutter runner saw the ball spill and the half end at

2-2. I was a little disappointed not to be ahead athalf time, but I was certainly in a much better po-sition than the previous game! Both teams wererolling fairly well, but there wasnt a lot in the wayof armour breaks. Even two crowd surfs only gota stun and a KO, despite the crowd being givenMightly Blow for the round (special rule in playfor this round). The only real disappointment wasthe big guys on both teams, who seemed reallyBone-headed or mad with rage a lot of the time.

The second half continued where the first left off.The skaven received, the slaan set up defensivelyand left their wide zones open for the gutter run-ners to run into and the rats ran in yet another

    two-turn TD.

Knowing that theslaan were going stacktheir team to one sideagain, I started to messaround with differentdefensive formationsto try and stop themfrom penetrating mybackfield. The firstattempt was a dismalfailure as the Kangas

once again forced their way in for a two-turnscore on turn 11. It didnt help that the ball, forthe fourth time in the game, scattered right nextto the scrum of slaan players. What was going onthere?

Tied at 3-3, I wasnt too worried. Although Icouldnt figure out how to stop the slaan fromscoring, they seemed to be as equally ineffectual atstopping the skaven. This point was proven againas the Brieran in another two-turn TD to go 4-3up on turn 13.

Varying my defensive set-up yet again, I pro-ceeded to fail yet again as the Kangastied the gameup at 4-4 with two turns left to play. It was at thatpoint that Mark realised that he should have triedto hold back on scoring for one or two turns,

which would have left the skaven with almost notime to go for the winning TD.

Although I couldnt figure out how tostop the slaan from scoring, they seemedto be as equally ineffectual at stopping the

skaven. This point was proven again asthe Brie ran in another two-turn TD to

    go 4-3 up...

Whether they could have held the skaven out foranother two turns and still scored is another mat-ter.

In any case, the Cheeseheadswere left with twoturns in which to go for the win. Once again thegutter runners pushed into the backfield, withthree of them within scoring distance. It was herethat Nuffle decided that the rats had sufferedenough at his hands in recent times. Trying tomark up one of the potential scoring threats, Mark

was forced to make a single GFI. Nuffle, how-ever, wasnt having any part of it as Mark rolled adouble one and the slaan blitzer hit the turf. Allthat was left was a regulation move-pass-move-hand-off-score to win. Thankfully every-thing went to plan this time as the skaven took itin for a turn 16 score and a 5-4 win.

Despite getting the win, the ending to the gamewas rather anti-climactic. There had been rela-tively good dice for both sides up until that point.Unfortunately for the slaan, the dreaded doubleone just came at the wrong time.

With that win the Cheeseheadswent to a 5-2-1 re-cord [which hasnt yet been updated in the league table onthe League Pages - Ed]and the finals were starting tolook like a real possibility. About the only down-side to the game was Cottage, an unskilled linerat

who was killed during the game being awarded theMVP. That would have given him enough SPPs

to skill up and I was really hoping to get a Kickskill on a linerat before my round nine match withda Skummi Gitz. Oh well, maybe next game. Inany case, it was on to the next game against thehumans ofSacre Bleu.

Round 8 vs Sacre Bleu (human)Round eight sawthe Cheeseheadstaking on the hu-mans ofSacre Bleu. After getting their mojo backagainst the slaan the rats were keen to keep theirmomentum leading into their big round ninematch with the top of the table Skummi Gitz. TheCheeseheadfans turned up in their droves, eager tosee another score-fest. However, come game timethe humans were nowhere to be found. The rats

waited on the pitch for an hour, hoping that theother team had headed to the wrong stadium, buteventually the referee grew tired of waitingand ruled a forfeit in favour of the skaven. Togive the fans some reward for showing up Marsca-

pone, gutter runner extraordinaire, stuck aroundfor a few hours signing autographs, earning him-self the MVP of the "game".

    Final Score 2-0 (Forfeit)

Team Gear - Getting ThereWith all the preparation for AusBowl, one of mychief concerns recently has been how Im going toget my team there and back in one piece. Particu-larly in a country like Australia, where we mayneed to travel hundreds of kilometres to get to atournament, or brave the perils of the variouspublic transport systems of our cities, a decentfigure case is something that is really important.

I have had the opportunity to look at three of the

most common cases on the market for review, and Im going to compareand contrast them underthe criteria of durability, size, features and price.

GW CasesThere are two types of GWcases, but the type I mostcommonly use, the olddouble-sided wavy-foam

type, is no longer around. Ido like this one, but nowa-days GW goes with severalsizes of multi-tier, compart-mentalised cases with ahard plastic outer (branded,of course). These cases areincredibly durable and can-not be faulted on this crite-ria, but they can be a touchlarge for your average

Blood Bowl road trip. They do usually have asmall amount of space toslip in a roster or two, andmaybe even a rulebook, butthe real trick about GW figurecases is price. Starting at $96 they are a bit pricyfor all but the most pussy-whipped Granny fan.On the plus side, though, you dont need to payfor postage because the tendrils of GW extend tomost parts of the country and you can just drop

into a store to pick one up.

Impact! CasesIf you are talking cus-tom-made-for-fantasy-football cases, the placeyou would probablythink of is Impact!Miniatures who supplya smaller option, perfectfor one team. As withGWs cases, the Impact!

Model is extremely du-rable, with a toughouter hull that isunlikely to be piercedby anything short of aplayer with Claw. Themajor beef I have withthe ability of the Im-pact! case to keep yourfigures safe, which is

    what durability is about,

is that it is really hard totell which side is up,meaning you can end

up dumping your minis allover each other.
