This is not my first time as President, but I see this as a wonderful opportunity to continue developing my leadership skills, growing and learning with your help and support. I want to thank Julie for the work during her presidency which led to Southern River being one of the leading clubs within District 17, especially in the area of Pathways awards achieved. The club also achieved President's Distinguished status, which is something to be very proud of. Well done to all of you for the hard work that you put in. New Roles to be introduced from September 1st. Toastmaster clubs often split the Grammarian role across a number of different roles, and we want to introduce two of these to a club meeting.

Ah Counter – the Ah Counter is responsible for counting and reporting on filler words (um, er, ah, so, and) that members use.

Harkmaster – the Harkmaster asks questions to see how well the members were listening to the speeches. They also count the number of times the word of the day was used.

This leaves the Grammarian free to focus and report on language usage and grammar. They will need to listen for examples of good grammar, and where things could have been worded more correctly. They will also listen for and report on the use of similes, metaphors and triads.

The intent of this is to lift the level of language usage in the club and to give more people the opportunity to perform roles on a weekly basis.

Advanced Mentoring Southern River has a good structure for mentoring new members which is proving very successful. However, mentoring can go beyond new members and into what is known as "advanced mentoring". Advanced mentoring is normally done to help people reach specific goals. For example, if a speaker wants to improve on vocal variety, they might ask a member who is good at this skill to help mentor them. The advanced mentor relationship can be as short or as long as necessary. Anyone can have an advanced mentor. You are able to approach the person directly, but please do advise the VPM of any mentoring arrangement, so that we can take a note of it.

Pathways Mentor Program Have you finished Level 2 in a Path? If so, you're eligible to unlock the Pathways Mentor Program. This is a fantastic program to help you become a great mentor. The resources are extremely informative and you have the opportunity to mentor two people. If you are interested in this please email Julie ([email protected]) for information on how to unlock the Pathways Mentor Program. District 17 Announces New Club Roles

District 17 has requested that all club appoint a Mentor Coordinator and a Pathways Coordinator to help their members. The Committee has nominated that these roles are filled by the following:

Mentor Coordinator - Nyasha Mutete Pathways Coordinator - Julie Dall These people can be approached with any questions on mentoring or pathways. As these are non-elected roles, they can change when required. If you would like to be considered for these roles in the future please let Graham know.
