QUiCK FaCtSTigers vs. Southern Miss

This is the 56th meeting between Memphis and Southern Miss. The Tigers lead the overall series 31-24, including a 63-57 win over Southern Miss in the Tigers’ last game in FedExForum. It was a pair of Tiger freshmen who led Memphis in the win over USM. Ariel Hearn finished with 17 points on 6-for-11 shooting, while Asianna Fuqua-Bey posted her first career double-double, finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Memphis led at the half, 37-21, then weathered a Southern Miss comeback to start the second half to hang on for their first C-USA win of the season.

With the Loss to SMU - Memphis falls into a tie for seventh in the C-USA standings. The Tigers are third out of the three teams they are in a tie for seventh with, so they are in ninth in the seeding process for the C-USA tournament. Memphis is currently tied with UCF, a team that swept the series from the Tigers, and Houston, a team that beat Memphis in the C-USA opener back in January. - Jamila Ajanaku posted career highs of 11 rebounds and six points in the loss to SMU. The senior transfer is averaging 6.7 rebounds per game in the last three outings. - Memphis falls to 5-6 in C-USA play, just the second time this season the Tigers have been under .500 in league play. - Asia Fuqua-Bey just missed tying her career-high on the offensive end, finishing with 13 points, one shy of her career-high of 14 that she set in the Tigers’ last meeting with Southern Miss. - Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir was a perfect 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. She has now hit 22 consecutive free-throws, eying her own school record of 26 that she shares with former Tiger and Mississippi na-tive Devin Necaise. - Memphis suffered just its second home loss of the season in conference play. The Tigers will have to be road warriors for the remainder of the season, with three of their last five games in C-USA play scheduled away from the Bluff City. - Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir finished with 13 points on 5-for-12 shooting. That gave her a second consecu-tive double-digit scoring game and upped her scoring average to 10.2 ppg. The redshirt junior missed seven games (games 5-12 for the Tigers) with a broken right (shooting) hand. -The Tigers fell to 6-9 when they give their opponents 20 or more attempts from the free-throw line, including a mark of 2-5 in league play. SMU was 20-for-25 from the free-throw line in the win. - Memphis was out-rebounded for a fourth straight game. The Tigers have been out-rebounded by an average 7.8 boards a night over the last four games, a stretch that’s seen the Tigers go 1-3. -Memphis went a second straight game without hitting a three-point field goal. The last Tiger triple came with 2:38 to play in the road loss at UCF on Feb. 10th. Memphis is 0-for-18 from beyond the stripe in the last three games. - With her three points on 1-for-10 shooting, freshman guard Ariel Hearn was held to single digits in back-to-back games for the first time in her collegiate career. She is 7-for-37 (18.9 percent) from the field in the last three games

Abdul-Qaadir and Jackson Save Day With “Almost” Career Games Junior guard Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir and freshman guard Jaymie Jackson each finished just one point shy of tying career highs in scoring in the 64-57 win over UAB last Thursday. The almost-career highs helps offset tough shooting nights for the Tigers’ leading scorers Nicole Dickson (who finished with 10 points on 2-for-11 shooting) and six points (on 3-for-11 shooting) from Ariel Hearn. That could be a good omen for the Tigers if the Abdul-Qaadir/Jackson duo could develop into consistent third and fourth scoring options. The single digit scoring night was just the sixth of the season for Hearn in 23 games.

McGraw Works Her Way to Line Sophomore guard Lauren McGraw has been in the starting lineup in four of the last five games as the Tigers look to her for some defensive pressure. The defensive pressure has presented her with some more scoring opportunities, as she is averaging 6.0 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals over the last three games. After attempting a career-high 11 shots in the loss at UCF, she earned a career-high six tries from the free-throw line on Thursday night. She has earned multiple trips to the free throw line in each of the last two games (with four tries on Sunday), but has gone 5-for-10 from the line to miss some scoring chances for herself.

Another Big Outing From Jones After scoring eight points in eight minutes in the win over UAB, sophomore center Ann Jones finished with 10 points in 14 minutes in the loss to SMU. That was the Jackson, Tenn., native’s first double-digit scoring night since as 12 point effort in the loss to Prairie View A&M (Nov. 25th) and is her third double-digit scoring effort of the season. Jones’ work is also paying off at the free-throw line, where she has hit nine straight free-throws, including back-to-back games with a 4-for-4 performance from the stripe. The Tigers just need to keep the 6-3 Jones out of foul trouble. She had four fouls in 14 minutes on Sunday and had three in eight minutes in the win over UAB on Thursday night. With the ball in her hands, she is a scoring threat, going 5-for-6 from the floor over the last two games.

A Rarity for Fuqua-Bey Asianna Fuqua-Bey was held without an offensive rebound in the loss to SMU while working against all-conference forward Akil Simpson. That was the first time in league play that the freshman has not gotten an offensive board and her four boards tied for her lowest rebounding total since league play began. But the freshman kept working, shooting 5-for-7 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line to finish with 13 points, her sixth career double-digit scoring night and her second double-digit game in the last three tries. She is 6-for-11 from the field in the last two games.

Dickson in a Drought? Nicole Dickson may feel like she didn’t have a great game against SMU. She was still Memphis’ leading scorer with 14 points and was 7-for-13 from the field, but the senior played just 25 minutes, the fewest since the last meeting with Southern Miss when she got into first half foul trouble. With a well-established reputation for scoring, she has drawn a lot of attention and has gone back-to-back games without hitting a three-point field goal for the first time since the first two games of last season, 53 games ago. The senior also had a four turnovers in the SMU loss.

Road Wins in League Play & The 10 C-USA Wins Mark Memphis finished the regular season with a winning record in Conference USA road games for the first time under Melissa McFerrin. The Tigers were 6-2 on the road in conference games with wins at Southern Miss, at UAB, at East Carolina, at SMU, at UCF and at Rice. Road Wins ...................................................... That’s Foul The Tigers are 6-9 when they give their opponents 20 or more attempts from the free-throw line, including a mark of 2-5 in league play.

Dickson Moves to 10th in Career Scoring Nicole Dickson has moved into the career top 10 at Memphis in scoring with 1,546 career points. That puts her squarely at 10th all-time, but she would have some work to do to move up any higher though. Kitty Allen is in ninth place with 1,823 points, 277 points away from where Dickson now sits.

Dickson Just Misses Third Consecutive Double-Double Senior forward Nicole Dickson just missed posting a third consecutive double-double in the loss at Marshall, but finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds in the loss at UCF for her fifth double-double of the season and the 15th of her career. Her 15 career double-doubles ranks her ninth in Memphis history. She would need to get two more double-doubles to move to a tie for sixth in double-doubles, where Ashley Thornton, Diane Gary and Linda Street currently sit with 17 double-doubles.

2012-13 MEMPHIS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTESuNIvErSITy Of MEMPHIS

Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basket-ball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s mod-ern history.

McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent the previous four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors.

Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minne-

sota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player Lindsey Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten champion-ship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin re-cruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationally-ranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.
