Last month’s meeting - Word and Malware

We had a very good turnout again last month with 5 visitors and 2 new members. Welcome to Stan Beck and Irene Lowde. Jim Greenfield gave us a talk on Spyware and Malware. Some pointers made were: He recommends to use Chrome or

Firefox rather than using Internet Explorer 9, 10 or 11.

Jim recommended instead of Spybot program, use

Malwarebytes. www.malwarebytes.org The main problem with Malware/Spyware is it hijacks your

home page, slows computer down, network slows down and you get more pop-ups.

Be very wary about adding extra toolbars to your

computer, and never download tool bars from the internet. Only download a program from its genuine website page or purchase the disc or a magazine that contains a disc. There are many bogus sights around.

Once Malwarebytes has been installed, run it every few days

even if it runs automatically. Do the same with your antivirus program - force it to scan from time to time.

Trevor Francis then talked about uses for Microsoft Word He showed us some of the following: Office off-line interacts between 2003 and 2007 versions. Trevor explained some of the shortcuts and ribbons and

offered information handouts to anyone who wanted them.

It is possible to view two documents at the same time.

Last month’s meeting, cont’d We were shown some home page choices, for example : - font - paragraphs - styles - changing margins and indents - page numbers - headers and footers - section breaks - inserting table of contents - changing line spaces - inserting pictures or shapes - finding a document at a later date using a footer. I am sure all who were present found both presenters very interesting and I hope all learnt quite a lot - I know I did.

GOD BLESS DOCTOR JIM

Once again we are personally, deeply indebted to our computer guru. Over the last few weeks we began to notice that our laptop was slowing down, our home page on the internet had changed, and messages were popping up telling us, amongst other things, that we had free PC back up on our computer and did we wish to do it now ! !, that Windows had recovered from an unexpected shut down ! !, and a WARNING, Your files are not protected ! ! ! My e-mail account was still readily accessible, however, but trying to find out anything on the internet was practically impossible. SOS to Jim. He stayed behind after the committee meeting, examined our laptop and diagnosed that it was suffering from a virus. He had recently operated on several other computers, and in most cases they seemed to be suffering from a similar virus. In a few severe cases he found that a complete restore was necessary to bring our computer back to good health, however, thankfully our cure was more simple. Jim did a restore to a month ago then downloaded Malwarebytes, which identified many problem programmes that had been invading our computer, none of which we had downloaded. They have now been removed. He doesn’t know how we got the virus. So far everything appears to be back to normal. Thanks Jim XXX

TONIGHT’S MEETING - USES FOR EXCEL

Presented by Cheryl McDonald

Cheryl plans to briefly demonstrate the wide variety of uses that are available when using Excel. She has been ‘brought up’ on earlier versions of Office and has found that there have been quite a few changes made in more recent years. However we’re sure that you will gather lots of useful information from her presentation tonight. For example: Create a spread sheet for your next holiday, using it to budget

for your expected fuel expenses and accommodation and/or caravan park costs.

Calculate average fuel consumption, plan your itinerary and

keep a daily diary. Keep a record of your household expenses Record address and phone numbers and sort into numerical or alpha

order Change columns to allow numbers, dollars or general data.

Extend Battery Life Between Battery Charges Turn off the below features to extend your battery life between charges. 1 Control the display brightness 2. Wifi — if you have finished accessing the internet, turn off the Wifi. 3. Bluetooth — Only turn on Bluetooth when you are using it. Golden rules for backing up your data.

1. Never have only one copy of anything. 2. The original and the copy should not be on the same computer drive. 3. Only plug the backup drive into your computer when backing up or restoring from the backup.

Committee Capers.

The tiny committee meeting was held on

Monday July 7th. No red cowbell this month

as our esteemed president was still away.

However, his position was filled by committeeman Robert

Zeugofsge while Lindsay stood in for Secretary Trevor. Subjects

up for discussion were:

A Computer Security Course was recently held at the

Sands Lifestyle Village. Jim, Trevor and Lindsay officiated

on behalf of the SDCUC, and feedback after the session was

well received, especially the comprehensive notes that

Trevor compiled. This course is being considered for one of

our future meetings.

Course notes have been revised and improved for the Word

course being held at the end of July.

A Computer Basic 1 course is to be held in late July also.

A wireless modem has been purchased to compliment the

use of the recently acquired Nexus Android tablet.

Power cord checking needs to be updated as this was last

done in December 2012.

Notes for the Secretary Course, to be held in August, have

now been completed and course flyers have been

distributed.

THE DISPOSAL OF TV’S AND COMPUTERS—City of Onkaparinga While the digital switchover has resulted in an increase of unwanted e-waste, the landfill bans and the Federal Government’s National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme (NTCRS) are designed to complement each other and ensure that this e-waste is recycled rather than discarded. What’s your problem ?

Tech support: What kind of computer do you have?

Customer: A white one.

Tech support: Click on the ‘my computer’ icon on the left of the screen.

Customer: Your left, or my left?

Customer: Hi, good afternoon, this is Jenny. I can’t print.

Every time I try, it says ‘Can’t find the printer’. I’ve even lifted the printer and

placed it in front of the monitor, but it still can’t find it!

Customer: My keyboard isn’t working anymore.

Tech support: Are you sure it’s plugged into the computer?

Customer: No. I can’t get behind the computer.

Tech support: Well, pick up your keyboard and walk 10 paces back.

Customer: ! OK.

Tech support: Did the keyboard come with you?

Customer: Yes

Tech support: That means the keyboard is not plugged in.

Customer: I can’t get on the internet!

Tech support: Are you sure you used the right password?

Customer: Yes I’m sure. I saw my wife do it.

Tech support: Can you tell me what your password was?

Customer: Five dots!

A customer called the Canon help line with a printer problem.

Tech support: Are you running it under Windows?

Customer: No, my desk is next to the door, but that’s a good suggestion.

The man sitting near me is under a window, and his printer is working fine!!
