Presidential Ponderings
IsatdowntodraftmyfirstpresidentialmissiveponderinghowluckyandhonoredIamtobehere.Look-ingatthelistofpastpresidentsleavesmealittleawe-struck.Iknowsomanyofthemasfriends,colleagues,andmentors.AndtheonesIdon’tknowpersonally,Iknowbyreputation.ThatgotmethinkingabouthowmanygreatpeopleIhavecometoknowthroughSEAALLovertheyears.Participationintheorganizationgivesusmanyopportunitiestolearnfromeachotherandtoencountereachother–attendingandpresentingprogramsattheSEAALLannualmeeting,chattingatthereceptionandbusinessmeetingatAALL,servingoncommitteesorasofficers.Weexchangeideasascolleaguesandmentors.Wereachouttothecommunitieswherewehostourmeetings.Wewearseersucker(well,lotsofusdo)whensocializingtocreateastrongsenseofidentity.Often,alongtheway,webecomefriends.IappreciatealloftheopportunitiesavailabletomebyvirtueofmembershipinSEAALL.Thankyouforgivingmethisadditionalspecialopportunity,toserveyouasPresident.
WehaveconcludedaverysuccessfulandinterestingmeetinginDecatur.ThankyoutotheChairoftheLocalArrangementsCommittee,SarahMauldin,andherdedicatedcrew:TerranceManion(webmaster),RichelleReid,ThomasSneed,KimberlySnoddy-George,RebeccaVelez,BettyWright,andPamDeemer(who,despitebeingretired,continuestodoyeomanserviceforSEAALL).Theirhardworkpaidofffortheattendees,whoenjoyedlearningandnetworkingandvisitingDecatur.Thankyoualsotothediligentandthoughtfulmem-bersoftheprogramcommittee:JackBissett,ToralDoshi,ElizabethFarrell,EmilyMarcum,FranNorton,SaraSampson,JennyWondracek,andPamDeemer(istherenothingshecan’tdo?).
Noteveryonecangotomultipleprofessionalmeetingsinayear.ThisyeartheSEAALLmeetinginDecaturmeetingturnsouttohavebeenapreviewforAALLinSeattle.SeveraloftheprogramsonthescheduleatSEAALLwillbereprisedatAALL.Inall,IcountednineteenAALLprogramsandoneHotTopicthatwereeitherpresentedatSEAALLorhadspeakersfromSEAALL.Alloftheprogramslookamazing.
IhavejustfinishedreadingRichardSusskind’snewbookaboutthefutureofthelegalprofession,To-morrow’s Lawyers. SusskindwasakeynotespeakeratAALLseveralyearsagoandisaprovocativewriterandthinker.Hechallengesallofustothinkabouthowtheprofessionwillchangeandtoprepareourselves,ifnottoshapethatchangethenatleasttothriveinthatchangedworld.WewillhaveachancetoengagethatsubjectatAALLinanumberofsessions,butparticularlyintheSundayHotTopic,whichwillfeatureafrankandfree-rangingdiscussionwithourSEAALLVIP,JimLehmann,managingpartneratNelsonMullinsRiley&Scarborough,LLC.NelsonMullinsisoneofthelargestlawfirmsinthesoutheast.Mr.LehmannandChristineSellers,aresearchspecialistwithNelsonMullins,willtalkwithusabouttheeconomicchallengesofthepastseveralyearsandtheforeseeablefutureandwhathisfirmlooksforinthenewlygraduatedlawyerstheyhire.Iwillbesolicitingquestionssoon,sopleasebethinkingaboutwhatyouwouldaskamanagingpartnerifyouhad

InApril2013,theKathrineR.EverettLawLibraryoftheUniversityofNorthCarolina-ChapelHillandtheJ.MichaelGoodsonLawLibraryofDukeUniversitysponsoredtheLegalInformationandInformationLawandPolicy(LiiLP)Workshop.DickDannerfromDukeandAnneKlinefelterfromUNCorganizedandcoor-dinatedtheWorkshop,whichwasheldatUNC-ChapelHill.SEAALLcoveredtheregistrationfeeforChaptermemberswhowereacceptedtopresentattheWorkshop.IwasoneofthemembersacceptedtopresentattheWorkshop.
ThisexcellentWorkshopprovidedagreatopportunityforauthorstoobtainfeedbackandsupportduringacriticalstageinscholarlywriting:thereviewofadraftofanarticle.PresentingauthorswereselectedinFall2012andsubmittedtheirdraftsforreviewbyMarch1,2013.Eachauthor’sarticlewasassignedtoaWork-shopfacultymemberwhowasanexperiencedscholar.AttheWorkshop,therewasa40minutesessiondevotedtoeacharticle(therewereconcurrentsessions).Ateachsession,theauthorprovidedabriefsummaryofthearticle.Theassignedfacultymemberthencritiquedthedraft.Otherfacultymembersandauthorsalsoattendedthesesessionsandofferedcommentsanddiscussion.Therewereasmanyas10peopleinasession.Thisar-rangementprovidedauniqueopportunitytodiscussadraftandreceivefeedbackfrompeoplewhonotonlyhadreadthedraft,buthadsomeexpertiseinthesubjectdiscussed.Areception,dinnerandlunchprovidedgreatopportunitiestomeetandtalkwithotherscholarswhowereonthefacultyorpresentingpapers.
ThereareplanstooffertheWorkshopagainin2014.WatchforfutureannouncementsaboutthedateoftheWorkshopandapplicationdeadlines.

Theobviousanswerismine,becauseIgetpaidforit...butthat’scheating.Idon’tspendalotoftimereadingnovels,andwhenIdotheytendtonotbelegalrelated.ThelastoneIcanrecallreadingwasThePelicanBriefbyJohnGrishamandthatwasanumberofyearsago.Iwouldratherhaveanhistoricalmysterynoveloranon-fictionbook.

Who has had the biggest impact on your law librarian career?
Noonepersonreallyfitsthatbill.IhavelearnedmostofwhatIknowthroughcontactwiththevariouspeopleIhaveworkedwithovertheyears.EverynewfaceintheLibrarybringsnewexperiencesandideasandpresentsanopportunitytothinkabouthowyoudothingsandadjustthewayyouapproachthejob.Thatisonenicethingaboutbeinganacademiclibrarian;everyyearIgettomeetalotofnewpeople.IfIhavetobepinneddowntooneperson,IthinkitwouldprobablybeKarinDenBleyker.Sheopenedalotofthedoorsthateventuallyledmetobeinghere.
If you could have a law library animal mascot and danger was not an issue what would you choose and why?
Ihadtomakesurecryptozoologicalcreatureswereacceptable,andIwasassuredthewere.That’swhenthechoicebecameobvious:Bigfoot!That’sright,thehairywonderofthenorthwestwoodsand,ifyoubelievetheBigfootFieldResearchersOrganization(http://www.bfro.net/),anactivedenizenofSoutheastMississippiswamps,wouldmakeaperfectlibrarymascot.Bigfootislarge,quietandrarelyseenorheard,perfectforalibraryenvironment.Butthethingabouthavingabigfootinyourlibraryis:evenifyouneverseeorhearhim,youknowhe’sthereandyouareprettysureyoudon’twanttodoanythingtomakehimmad.Ihaveseenthecommercials...Bigfootcouldripyoulimbfromlimb.PrettysurepatronswillobeytheruleswiththethreatofaBigfoothoveringovertheirheads.
If you could change anything in legal publishing or libraries what would it be?
Thenotionthatelectronicresourcescansupplantpaper.Moreandmoreitseemsthepricingofbooksisstruc-turedtoforceyouawayfromtheprintmaterial.Whileelectronicresourcescanprovideeasieraccess,thereisanimpermanencytotheinformation.Whatweknowofancientcivilizationscomesfromwritingsinclay,stoneandpaper.Oncetheelectricityisturnedoffhowwillthefutureknowwhoweareorwhatweaccomplished?

EdHartcalledthemeetingtoorderat8:00a.m.HethankedBloombergforsponsoringthebusinessbreakfast.ArepresentativeofBloombergintroducedherselfandherteam.EdthenintroducedmembersofSEAALL’sexecutiveboardandthenewmemberswhowontheelection:Vice-President/PresidentElectFranNorton,Trea-surerKateIrwin-Smiler,andMember-at-LargeChristineSellers.
Edaskediftherewereanychangestotheminutesofthelastbusinessmeeting,whichtookplaceinBoston,Massachusetts.Therewerenochanges,soEdcalledforamotiontoapprovetheminutes.Thatmotionwasgivenandseconded.Allvotedaye.
BillieBlainedidnotattendthemeetinginDecatur,soEdgavetheTreasurer’sreport.Edreportedabalanceof$31,367.07andthatthechapterwasdoingwell.
Edthenaskedthecommitteechairstogivetheirreports.
CarolWatsonreportedthatthebylawshadbeenupdatedandbroughtintocompliance.
RebekahMaxwellthankedSEAALLmembersfortheirgenerouscontributionstotheDeKalbCountyPublicLibraryandpassedthedonationjararoundtheroomforeveryone’sfinalcontribution.
JackBissett,chairoftheEducationandPublicationsCommittee,gavethereport.Thecommitteehassentthemembershipalmost30noticesofactivitiesofotherchapterswithinSEAALL’sgeographicarea.AftertheAALLmeetinginBoston,thecommitteeinvitedmemberstosubmitprogramproposalsfortheAALLmeetinginSeattle.Twoprogramproposalsweresubmittedforreview,andone,EmilyMarcum’s“GetHired:HowtoConveyYourValue,”wasacceptedbyAALLforitsSeattleprogram.SEAALLhassponsored,andAALLhasproduced,awebinarcalled“TechnologySkillsforthe21stCenturyLawLibrarian:What’sinYourCV?”ItwillbepresentedonWednesday,June5,2013.
SarahMauldingavethereportfortheLocalArrangementsCommittee.ShepresentedtheDecaturmeetingitselfasherreport.EdthankedSarahandpresentedacertificatetoherforherwork.
RyanValentingavethereportfortheMembershipCommittee.HesaidthatthecommitteeisworkingwiththeSEAALLwebmasterstomakeabettermembershipdirectory.Lettersthatwelcomenewmembersandthatso-licitnewAALLmemberstojoinSEAALLaresentoutperiodically.SEAALLhasadded50newmembersthisyearforatotalmembershipof597.AttheAALLmeetinginBoston,SEAALLhadatablethatfeaturedpens,Post-Itnotes,andbeveragecoasters,allwiththeSEAALLlogo.SEAALLwillhaveasimilartableatAALL’smeetinginSeattle.

TheLawLibrarymaintainsbothprintanddigitalresourcesandisparticularlystronginU.S.SupremeCourtmaterials,church/statelaw,Tennesseelegalmaterials,aswellasemergingfieldsoflawsuchasbioethics/bio-technology,anddigitallaw.Furthermore,thelibraryisbuildingstrongcollectionsinHealthLawandEnter-tainmentandMusicBusinessLawtobuildonBelmontUniversity’ssuccessfulprogramsintheseareas.
TheLawLibraryhasadoptedpoliciesthathelpcreateauser-friendlyenvironmentandonethatencouragesuseofthefacility.“Puttingstudentsfirst”isthemantraofthelibrary.Thus,conversationinreasonabletonesbystudentsandpatronsispermissible,foodanddrinksareallowedinthelibrarywithlimitedexceptions,andmanypopularmagazineandnewspapertitlesareavailableforstudentleisurereading.

Foranyonewhowatchessportsthesedaysandalsohasahistoricalaspectofsportsyoucanattestthatwearenowinaneraofuniformchanges.ThereareafewholdoutsliketheNewYorkYankeeswiththeirhomepinstipesbutbyinlargeteamshaveallsortsofuniformstowearthesedays.Thisisdrivenbymarketingtosellmoreuniformsandinanattempttobehipandcool.
Thiscommentisnotonthedressoflawlibrarianstoday,I’llpassonthat,butabouthowlawlibrarian-shipishangingratherrapidlyonhowweareperceivedandtheimageweportrayasprofessionals.Someinourschoolsanduniversitiesthinklibrariansareanoutdatedideathathavebeenreplacedbyonlineresources.Iknowthiswasthetalkedaboutfearthatwealldismissed10yearsagobecauseitwas“silly”butIdon’tthinkadmin-istratorsunderstandjusthowthatbeliefissillyandwhenitcomestimetosavesomemoneythat“silly”ideaallthesuddenbecomesuseful.Insteadoffallingvictimto“silly”ideaslikethislibrariansshouldbeproactiveandstayaheadofchanges.
Instayingaheadofchangesitisimportanttorealizesomeothersinourschoolsseeusasvaluable,withlibrariesgenerallyprovidingvaluebutintimesofreorganizationsmanynewtasksgetassignedtolibrarians.LibrariesthatoncewereseparatefromITarenowtakingoverlabs;librariesthatprovidevaluableprintmate-rialsareseeingbookspulledfromshelvestoprovidestudyrooms;librariesthenseestudyroomsturnedintostorageforotherdepartmentsorofficesforfacultyorgrowingadministrationdepartments.Allofthesechangesiflookedatinapositivewaycanjustbeseenasuniformchanges.Thingstomakeusmoremarketable,andattimesmorehipandcool.Morestudyroomsarecooltoseriousstudents,librariestakingoverlabsmakethemmorevaluable.
Intheendweaslibrariansneedtorecoginzethatchangeisgoingtohappeneitherwithusorwithout,andifwecanseizeontothatnewlypossiblevaluewecanmakeourlibrariesevenmoreessentialthantheywereinthepast.
