Our Program The Southeastern NCPN Regional Clean Center for Grape is serving the viticulture region of Florida and neighboring Gulf States positioned in the PD’s (Pierce’s Disease) zone of the American Southeast. The mission of our Center is to provide high quality clonally-propagated grapevines regionally adapted muscadines, and PD’s tolerant American natives hybrids free of targeted transmittable, diseases through testing, diagnosis, and therapy.

Florida A&M University’s Center for Viticulture and Small Fruit Research is maintaining for industry use the disease free G1/G2 nuclear planting stock of single copy origin grapevines and 4.5 acres Foundation Vineyard (G2) which currently is planted with 25 economically important muscadine and Florida native hybrid varieties.RESEARCH TEAMDr. Violeta Tsolova- Professor, Viticulture and Developmental Biology, Program Leader: (850) 412-7394; [email protected]

Program Partners and Beneficiary

We work closely with the current programs of the NCPN, other academic institution in the region, local nurseries, Florida Viticulture Advisory Council, the Florida Wine and Grape Growers Association and the Florida Department of Agriculture through research, methods development, risk management, educational workshops and field days to advance the competitiveness and growth of the regional grape and wine industry and secure disease free planting stock for nurseries and individual growers.

Program ObjectivesProducing high quality disease free muscadine and Florida hybrid grape varieties by in vitro meristem culture.

Conduct research and developed rapid methods for diagnostic of muscadine and PD tolerant American native grape varieties for crown gall, viruses and Eutypa dieback.

Sustain the foundation block G1.

Operate the “Diagnostic Facility for American Native Southern Grapes”

Assist the extension and certification program.

Industry Demand

Increase demand from nurseries in Florida, Georgia and Texas for licensing of our proprietary muscadinevariety “Majesty” and inclusion of new muscadinevarieties into the Southeastern Clean Vine Program due to an interest for exporting muscadineplanting stock abroad (China and Brazil).

On going projects:New varieties (6) and breeding lines (3) are undergoing disease elimination and to be included in the “Clean Vine Foundation Block" by nursery request (partial NCPN funding FY 2015).

A rapid highly specific early monitoring program for Eutypa dieback in muscadine grapes using molecular diagnostics ( in state funding FY 2015)

Surveying GLRaV-1 in southern vineyards and in house diagnostic capability (in state funding FY 2016 )

To continue to evaluate the healthy status of the 1st generation vines in the Foundation vineyard in harmonization with the accepted guidelines of the Grape NCPN (1st audit completed in 2015 with partial NCPN FY2015 funding).

Two additional multi[purpose labs are under development in the newly designed "Viticulture Field/Head House Facilities Project: Postharvest Evaluation and Plant Pathology (Evans –Allen Formula Grant Funding).

Reasons are complex and poorly understood:

Several factors (Rubio and Garzón, 2011) could be involved in recent trunk diseases

development:

i) Increased number of the contaminated asymptomatic stocks in vineyards.

ii) Infections brought to vineyards by infected planting material. Grapevine Trunk Diseases.

iii) Cultural practices in vineyards. These usually focused to have grape yield during the first years and, giving a poor pruning wound protection.
