    I didnt know what to expect,boarding my flight in West PalmBeach, FL to Omaha, NE for avisit to the US Air Force WeatherAgency. I questioned whether thisactivity was going to be fun,or tough. My mind wonderedendlesslyas this

    was myfirst Spe-cial Ac-tivity, butI waslookingforwardto it.

    Arriv-ing inOmaha June 16, I was met by myescorts, Capt Axotis and C/SMSgtWolff.

    The weekend consisted of tour-ing the Strategic Air and Spacemuseum, where we saw a U2, SR-71 and simulators. Afterwards wewent to the local water park andhad a blast on the slides! Our daysduring the weekwere mixed withAir ForceWeather classesand visiting theNationalWeather Service(NWS).

    In the eve-nings, we visitedthe local TV station KETV Chan-nel 7, where we got to play withthe green screen. The green screenis the background where the com-puter-generated weather maps and

    graphics are projected behind thepresenter so he or she can pointto specific events and features.The stations weatherman showedus all the inside tips to weatherforecasting. A lot of hard work isbehind the scenes of a weatherwatch or warning.

    After learning about spaceweather we had some downtime and went bowling. ( Ibowled my highest gameever!)

    Later in the week, we had thechance to fly in KC-135 simu-lators. It was very cool, and

    Im glad we have professionalsdoing that; otherwise we would be

    in a lot of trouble.One of the highlights of my trip

    was the obstacle course. It wasactually harder than I expected,but I did complete the courseeventually and felt great after-wards.

    We had our graduation banquetthat Friday night, and I had achance to thank the staff and ca-

    dets for an awesome week! Iwould like to especially thankCapt Schroeder-USAF, Lt ColMcMillan-CAP Commander, andSrA Liptroff-USAF; Capt Schroe-

    der gave us AFWAhats, coins and amemory of a life-time! SrA Liptroffwas an Earhart re-cipient and is an AirForce Fire Rescuemember.

    I would recommendattending the AirForce WeatherAgency Special Ac-tivity to any cadet.

    Hurricane season is here again. With it comes the requirement to be pre-pared to bring in the yard furniture and tie down the loose objects around thehouse. This is not only on the coast but far inland where the threat of squalllines and tornados exist.

    We as CAP members, if not directly affected by the storm need to be

    ready to go into action as soon as requested. Our help may not be asked forthat day or even several days later but we need to be ready. Being readydoesnt mean sitting by the phone or at the vehicle, but continuing your nor-mal routines. The hardest personnel goals are usually several days after theevent. Everybody is tired and first responders are wanting to go home.

    The requirement for damage assessment, re-supply, and other services canextend for weeks. That is where our depth of personnel is vital.

    Dont feel frustrated or forgotten if the call doesnt come. The fact that weare ready to go is what counts.

    The Southeast Region has weathered many storms and we were and al-ways will be prepared to help.

    ALWGs Cadet SuccessesTwo Civil Air Patrol cadets of the Redstone Composite Squadron 119

    were guests of the US Naval Academy and US Air Force Academy in June.Cadet TSgt Garrett Bain is at the Air Force Academys Summer Seminarspending a week seeing what life is like as an AFA cadet. Likewise, C/A1CTravis Wilson spent time at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD seeingwhat life would be like as a plebe. Both cadets hope to get an appointment tothe service academies next year when they graduate from high school. CadetWilson attends Catholic High in Huntsville and Cadet Bain attends high

    school in Arab, AL.

    The Redstone Composite Squadron has a former cadet at West Point andseveral on Army and Air Force ROTC Scholarships.

    Two other cadets from the squadron received scholarships. Cadet 2Lt Mi-chael Barron received the $28,000 Cornerstone Award and will enter Bir-mingham Southern College this fall. Cadet Andrew M. Johnson has been se-lected to attend the Air Force Academy Class of 2010. In addition, he hasreceived an AFROTC scholarship for aerospace engineering to Auburn Uni-versity ($36,000), a freshman academic scholarship from Auburn ($20,000)and a Tennessee Valley Authority scholarship ($4,000).

    More than anyone in US mili-

    tary history, General George C.Marshall, US Army, Chief of Staffduring WWII, is credited as beingthe near-perfect example of jointleadership. He best exemplifiedthe qualities of the soldier/states-man. Marshalls ability to subdueour internal armed service rivalriesprovided the basis for later strate-gic and operational cooperation ona grand scale between US and Al-lied forces. This proved critical for

    success in major operations in theEuropean and Asiatic theaters ofwar. Marshall also tried to pro-mote the idea of joint purchasingas applied to the War Departmentprocurement in the days of Presi-dent Roosevelt. Fifty years later itfinally became the norm. Todayjoint operations are mandatory formilitary operations by order of theJoint Chiefs of Staff.

    Each of us should promote jointtraining operations whenever fea-

    sible to pool personnel and re-sources to maximize efficiency,conserve resources, reduce dupli-cation of effort in the conduct oftraining between Squadrons,Groups or Wings, to obtain thesame efficiency as realized duringoperational missions.

    SER Counterdrug encouragesforce expansion through crewcross training between Wings, toincrease the frequency of training

    to increase our mission readiness.We hold monthly joint telephonicconferences, conduct staff assis-tance visits and fly missions withWing Counterdrug Officers andtheir personnel to exchangeoperational information andexperiences.

    We endeavor to benefit fromeach others lessons learnedthrough mission experiences

    gained across our diverse area ofoperation be it extended flying

    operations over the Gulf of Mex-ico, imagery collection, mountainflying, air operations to supportLocal, State and Federal Law en-forcement and National Guard orin the support of the Air Defensemission of the ANG.     How are your leadership skills?If you are a commander or if youare in a key staff position, you mayuse these skills often. I think all ofus that are in CivilAir Patrol and areserious about ourpositions in thisorganization shouldbe leaders. Ourmissions are of avery serious nature,so we need activeand informed leaders to accomplishour mission in Civil Air Patrol.

    In the next three SER newslettersI will introduce to you some con-cepts of leadership that should behelpful to you as leaders.

    I dont think that leaders arenaturally born. I think that somepeople are born to be leaders, how-ever even these individuals must betrained. If you have the desire and

    will power, you can become an ef-fective leader. Good leaders de-velop through a never-ending proc-ess of self-study, education, train-ing and experience.

    Lets define leadership. TheUnited States Air Force SquadronOfficer School (SOS) course states,leadership is the art of influencingand directing people in a way thatwould win their obedience, confi-dence, respect and loyal coopera-tion in achieving a common objec-tive. Leaders carry out this processby applying their leadership attrib-utes, such as beliefs, values, ethics,character, knowledge, and skills. Ifyou are a staff director you have the

    authority to accomplish certaintasks and objectives in the organi-zation. Leadership differs in that itmakes followers want to achievehigh goals rather than just beingbossed around.

    The basis of good leadership ishonorable character and selflessservice to your organization. Inyour members eyes, your leader-ship is everything you do that af-fects the organizations objectives

    and their well-being. Respectedleaders concentrate on what theyare (such as beliefs and character),what they know (such as job, tasks,and human nature), and what theydo (such as implementing, motivat-ing, and providing direction).

    What makes a person want tofollow a leader? People want to beguided by those they respect andwho have a clear sense of direction.To gain respect, they must be ethi-

    cal. A sense of direction is achievedby conveying a strong vision of thefuture.

    This month in the series fromTony Kerns book entitledDarkerShades of Blue

    the Rogue Pilot,

    we review the ca-

    reer of the famousSoviet pilot, ValeryChkalov, who de-spite his rogue be-havior helped make flying saferthrough procedures he inventedwhile performing a rogue maneu-ver. The line between safe but ag-gressive flying and rogue flyingoften is somewhat clouded becauserogue pilots are generally veryskilled in the air and manage to sur-

    vive their rogue behavior for atime. Consider the story about Va-lery Chkalov.

    Chkalov was born in February1904, the tenth child of working-class parents. His father operated asteamboat on the Volga River so asa young child Valery grew up onthe river, where his aggressive na-ture could perhaps be traced to hisdesire for identity among his ninesiblings. When he was 15, Chkalov

    went to work in an aircraft factoryassembling airplanes. He did every-thing he could to learn about air-craft construction before moving onto learning how they operated. Thisknowledge stood him in good steadand may have contributed to hisaggressive flying later in his career.He pestered the plant commanderfor a pilot nomination to the mili-tary flight school, finally getting anappointment to the Yegorevsk Mili-

    tary Theoretical Flight School, atthe time the youngest to receivesuch an appointment. He workedvery hard learning physics, basicaerodynamics, math, and politicalpreparation, faring well enough tograduate near the top of his class.He moved on to the BorisoglebskFlight School distinguishing him-self as one of the top 10 graduatesand earning himself a slot at the

    Moscow Aerobatics School, learn-ing aerobatics in WWI fighter air-craft. Chkalov received the rank offighter pilot in November 1924 af-ter finishing his formal training atthe Advanced School at Serpuk-hovsk.

    During those early years, Chka-lov committed a number of regula-tion violations, earning him time inthe guardhouse. An example washis disregard of the rules of engage-ment (ROE) during combat practicewith other pilots who were follow-ing the ROE, thereby endangeringthose other participants. But hiscontribution to flight safety is alsorecorded. While flying acrobatics inthe Fokker D-7 the engine wouldsometimes quit and would be im-

    possible to restart, even in a dive.Because of this, acrobatic flight wasrestricted to the airfield environ-ment. One day Chkalov was per-forming maneuvers over the fieldand deliberately cut off his engine.He didnt land his aircraft as or-dered but rather put it into a dive,and, close to the ground, pulled upwith a sharp turn to the oppositeside of the engine shaft. As a result,the blade began to rotate and started

    up when the ignition was turned on.He repeated the maneuver a numberof times for the benefit of those onthe ground watching. Upon landing,the commander told him to writedown the procedure so that every-one else could perform it.

    Back to his old tricks, he againspent time in the guardhouse forcompleting over 200 consecutiveloops on a bet with a fellow pilot.On another occasion he spent moretime in the guardhouse for doingacrobatics at extremely low altitude.His view of the regulations werethat they were for other, less skillfulpilots, and didnt apply to him.There are two reasons why thisthinking is flawed. First, the rest ofthe pilots made flight decisions un-der conditions of assumed compli-ance, meaning that they thoughteveryone they flew with would fol-

    low the same procedures. When thisdidnt happen, it jeopardized thetrust between the flyers, so criticalto safe operations. Second, it dem-onstrated that the rogue is moreworried about himself than aboutothers stressing individual im-provement over team safety. With a

    continuing disregard for rules,Chkalov spent additional time in theguardhouse and was eventually re-moved from flight status and sen-tenced to a year in prison for willfuldisobedience of flying directives.He was released 19 days later andassigned to a transport squadron.Later, he was appointed to the TestPilot Institute in November 1930where he found his true calling.

    Chkalov mellowed somewhat

    during this period but maintainedhis aggressive flying style. His mas-tery of the air improved safety formany Soviet pilots, uncoveringproblems with new designs foundonly through skillful flight testing.Some of these designs went on toserve during WWII, planes like theIL-15 and IL-16. He was selected tocommand the first trans-polar flightfrom the Soviet Union to the UnitedStates, landing at Pearson Army Air

    Corps base in Vancouver, Washing-ton in an AN-25. After this flight,Chkalov and crew were decoratedas Heroes of the Soviet Union, theircountrys highest award. He laterwas elected a deputy of the Su-preme Soviet but continued to fly.While testing an IL-180 aircraft onDecember 15, 1938, he crashed andwas killed. Nothing is said of whyhe crashed but to quote the author,most rogue pilots end up in the

    same place for the same generalreasons. If youd like to visit, bringflowers. The lesson for CAP pilotsis clear. We are not test pilots tryingto explore the limits of safe opera-tion. Rather, we are charged withfollowing the rules laid out for usby the FAA and our own organiza-tion. Fly safe!

    This regulationoutlines the pro-

    gram to preparesenior members inthe special skillsrequired for CAPmission accom-plishment. It offers opportunities tohelp senior members to learn spe-cific mission related skills and pre-pare for leadership positions. Com-manders have the responsibility tosupport the Senior Member Profes-sional Development Program in

    accordance with the provisions ofthis regulation. Members desiringpromotions and information impor-tant to their career should becomefamiliar with CAPR 50-17.

    The regulation contains forms,charts an index and list of over 40acronyms as well as the followinginformation. It is important to learnthe meaning of the acronyms toavoid misunderstanding in conver-sation. The overview for the regula-

    tion addresses purpose of SeniorMember Development Program,Organization of the program, Ori-

    entation, the five levels of the pro-gram and Professional Develop-ment opportunities. Details on theProfessional Opportunities are AFI-DAL, CAP Resident Courses, andNational Professional DevelopmentOpportunities Chapter 2 addressesTraining, a Reference Library,

    Testing, Records Management, Cri-teria for Awards, The ProfessionalDevelopment Report and GeneralGuidance. The Five Levels ofAwards are described as well asStaff Duty Assignments and sup-port procedure. Participation isaddressed as well. Details aregiven for the Level 5 program andthe Cadet Protection Program. TheCadet program objectives are alsoaddressed.

    Level 2 of the program and Spe-cialty Track training is covered.The CAP Officer Course, SquadronLeadership School and YeagerAward are addressed. Chapter 5 ofthe regulation addresses Manage-ment, Bronze Star for LeadershipRibbon, Corporate Learning Courseand Grover Loening AerospaceAward. Chapter 6, Level 4 givesCommand and Staff details as wellas the Silver Star for Leadership

    Ribbon. The Region Staff Collegeand Chaplain Service Region StaffCollege are described. Addition-

    ally, the Inspector General Collegeinformation is given.

    Operations for the 8th FieldTraining Cycle concluded April 2with an all hands ground exerciseinvolving 5 teams from 7 squad-rons. The scenario reflected, asmuch as possible, the timeline of an

    actual search mission. Membersconducted witness interviews inAutauga County and triangulatedon a practice distress beacon beforefinishing with a scene managementexercise under the supervision ofan Emergency Medical Technician.With the success of this exercise,the FTX staff is considering ex-panding the training to includesimilar scenarios in the future.

    The FTX is hosted by Squadron32 at Maxwell AFB under the di-rection of Maj Michael Long. Thesix-month training cycle is the onlycomprehensive ground operationstraining program in Alabama, al-

    lowing members to participate intraining that leads to ratings forGround Team Member 2 (basiccourse), Ground Team Member 1(advanced course), or GroundTeam Leader for those that qualify.Of the 44 Total Participants (28Cadets, 16 Seniors) 26 graduated (8Seniors, 18 Cadets) and earned atleast one rating. The followingunits were represented. The number

    and kind of qualification earned islisted below the units.

    Students by Unit: AL-032, 14;AL-113, 8; AL-090, 7; AL-118, 4;AL-117, 3; AL-123, 1; AL-087, 1;AL-119, 1. Graduates: 26 Total - (8

    Seniors, 18 Cadets); GTL, 4;GTM1, 6; GTM2, 16.

    These numbers effectively in-crease the number of ground teamsin the wing by 5 teams making thewing much more able to respond tocustomer needs as the operationstempo for the year increases. Plan-ning for the 9th cycle is alreadyunderway for the 2006-2007 pro-gram that will begin in October.

    May 24, 2006 marked the 2ndanniversary of an event of histori-

    cal proportions as the then FloridaWing Ceremonial Guard that Icommanded, presented the firstever wreath at the Tomb of the Un-known Soldier on behalf of theCivil Air Patrol.

    It was quiet. I found myselfwatching the sentry marching hisguard post and counting. Twenty-one paces before stopping. Eachpause 21 seconds. One-one thou-sand, two one-thousand. Click! Hisheels came together like a rifleshot. His precision choreographedwith such pride and dignity that Icouldnt help but feel that I was ina very special place.

    Special indeed. Graves of thou-sands of warriors cascade over thelandscape with white markers inline after line, standing as if at at-tention. Somewhere in that sea ofwhite was the grave of my friend,

    fellow CAP member, winner of twoMedals of Valor for risking his lifefor his community, as he had riskedhis life flying gun ships and dustoff helicopters for the US Army inVietnam. I had a lump in my throatas I recalled Lt Col Gerald F.Genaw, CAP, who was a communi-cations wizard when missions camearound. I miss him. Hearing theconstant tread of the sentries gaveme some solace as I felt like one ofhis own is watching out for him aswell as for the Unknown Soldierlaying immediately in front of me.A spiritual moment.

    Fingering my camera for a oncein a lifetime shot, I stood waitingfor the CAP cadets from all aroundCentral Florida who were to be es-corted by an Army Ranger whoexuded pride and professionalism.As they marched down the stepsand moved into position, the wreath

    at the ready, I couldnt help but beawed by being a part of such a his-torical event.

    As taps sounded, I snapped apicture, then came to attention, putmy camera down and executed Pre-

    sent Arms like I had so many timesin my USAF and CAP career. Itnever becomes boring or old hat.It is an event that gives one time topause to reflect on what it means to

    wear the uniform and to be a citi-zen of this great country.

    At the conclusion of the wreathlaying ceremony, my cadets, re-gardless of where they came from,marched off. The sentry kept hisvigil as he has since the very firstceremony. My cadets were walkingin the footsteps of Kings, Queens,Ambassadors and Presidents and,like them, were here to honor oursoldiers. It was a significant emo-

    tional event.Next came a tour of the Quarter

    Deck, the area under the steps andbuilding leading to the shrine area.As I stepped through the door, thatsame Sergeant called, Attentionon the Quarter Deck! and gave mea salute that almost startled me.Here was the epitome of honor andtradition of the US Army saluting aCAP Lt Col as being one of their

    own. We were part of them. Whatan honor! What a responsibility!

    We were conducted to the Wall

    of Honor, containing the names of

    the hundreds of 3rd Infantry Divi-

    sion soldiers who have been selected

    to become guards at

    the Tomb. Twenty-

    four hours a day

    since July 2, 1937, in

    rain, snow or even

    hurricanes these

    proud men have con-

    tinued the tradition.

    Some places had thebrass plates re-moved. Thoseblank spaces arewhere former guardswho brought dis-honor on the Tomb

    Detail had their names removed,another sergeant explained. Anyoffense, even if after retirement,will cause a detail of soldiers toappear at the guards door to repos-sess the coveted device. It showedthat they were among the best. Notany longer. They were not consid-ered worthy of keeping the badge,or of having their name displayed.They didnt measure up.

    Mostly the loss of the privilegeof wearing the Tomb device hasbeen for DUI, but there have been afew, very few serious infractions ofthe law. The sentries realize thehonor to be chosen for such a pres-

    tigious detail. Some years ago, oneguard dropped his rifle during histour. Nothing was said. However,at the conclusion, he resigned andturned in his pin. He felt he didntmeasure up.

    It was a lesson that was etchedindelibly on my brain. Do I meas-ure up? Do you?

    Saturday June 3rd, seven Group4 members loaded up and headedfor Kennedy Space Center. Allexcept one of these members are

    communications officers withinGroup 4. The mission was to re-place the CAP repeater antenna ontop of the worlds largest (by vol-ume) building, the Vehicle Assem-bly Building, located on CapeKennedy. For two of us (CaptChris Myers and SM Jack Payne)the day started very early at 4:30a.m. as we were to meet in VeroBeach and make the drive northtogether.

    We had all been cleared by KSCsecurity the week before so, otherthan a glitch which had NASAsecurity computers down for theday, we made it into the spacecomplex with a minimum of delay.The guards and security personnelwere very helpful. Meeting upwith Col Ralph Gwinn, Lt ColNancy Gwinn, Maj Bill Rice, 1stLt Scott Marin, and our NASAescort and CAP member, Capt

    Gary Dahlke, we traveled to theHeadquarters Building, got ourarea passes and then it was on toour destination at the giant vehicleassembly building.

    The buildings footprint is 8

    acres; its height is some 525 feet,(52 stories). It encloses129,428,000 cubic feet of space. Itwas originally built for assemblyof Apollo/Saturn vehicles that first

    lifted man to the moon and waslater modified to support spaceshuttle operations. High Bays 1and 3 are used for integration andstacking of the complete spaceshuttle vehicle. High Bay 2 is usedfor external tank (ET) checkoutand storage and as a contingencystorage area for orbiters.High Bay 4 is also used forET checkout and storage, aswell as for payload canister

    operations and solid rocketbooster contingency han-

    dling.

    Once inside we passedthrough area security,changed badges, and got intothe first elevator for a ride tothe 34th floor. Changingelevators again, on we wentto the top, and finally got afirst look at the work to be done.

    The antenna to be replaced wasa single dipole that was put up astemporary after last years hurri-cane. The new one looked muchmore complicated to me, a non-communications person. How-ever, we needed the extra power

    boost to im-prove Group4s commu-nication ca-pabilities.

    The newantenna should enable us tobounce a signal from as far southas Vero Beach and Ft. Pierce toMelbourne for ground units andeven further for our aircraft.

    The day was a bit overcast butthat did not deter any of us from

    enjoying the breathtaking view ofthe entire Cape, including the

    Headaches occur moreoften when yourestressed, so its a goodidea to try and manageyour stress. You cando this by followingsome helpful tips:1. Change your atti-tude. Use positiveaffirmations. By this I mean dontthink, this cant be done. Think in-stead yes I can do this even though it

    might be tough going.2. Exercise. Exercise can break thestress process and provides a breakfrom stressors.

    3. Eat properly: I know youve heardthis a million times, eat a diet rich infruits, vegetables and whole grains.4. Laugh: Humor is a great reliever ofstress. It releases endorphins thatmake us feel better and actually re-lieves pain. Read Anatomy of anIllness to get a great viewpoint onlaughter as a pain reliever.5. Take a Break: Change your routine,do something new. Try stretching oruse some relaxing techniques. (There

    are some great tapes to help you learnthese techniques.)6. Learn to relax: Learn the art of deepbelly breathing. When you feel your-

    self tensing up, breathe deeply, inhaleand hold for a few seconds (your stom-ach should be pushed out) then releaseand blow out slowly (your stomachwill be flat). Its a very simple exer-cise and does so much good.7. Simplify your life: Be prepared.Prioritize your chores and rememberits OK to say no occasionally.We cant avoid daily stress but we canlearn to control it. Its all up to you.

    FTX BivouacBy Capt Virginia Knudsen

    As one of the ASPIRA cadetsexercises at a FTX Bivouac, the

    cadets practiced setting up emer-gency ground symbols used byvictims to alert air search rescueteams. When the cadets visited theMiami US Coast Guard fa-cility they had learned thatthe alerting system was apart of the Search and Res-cue Operations of the CoastGuard.

    Space Studies: As a pre-liminary to the Rocketry

    and Space Environ-ment modules, a number ofcadets, now proudly wearingtheir rocketry badges, par-ticipated in Group7s Rocketry weekend con-ducted by Capt John Bohar-sik. Cadet/Alpha Flight con-tinued their studies with indepth research into severalaspects of micro gravity and artifi-cial satellites. The research lead to

    creative hands-on projects whichwere on display at the Awards &Promotions Ceremony. The CAP

    Awards Program with its manyawarded honors was successfullycarried out. Parents and friendswere proud of the young peoplesachievements and thrilled when

    after flight simulator demonstra-tions by the cadets, the parentswere encouraged to try their handsat flying.

    Awards Program: Culminatingthe school year was an invitation to

    a special ceremony honoring theTuskegee Airmen: first black pilotsof WWII who as fighter pilots es-

    corted B-24 Bombers during thewar in Europe and amazinglynever lost a plane. After the pressconference, city proclamation andthe key to the city, the audience

    was encouraged to ask questions ofthese heroes who continue to in-spire young people with their ac-complishments. Cadet S/SgtGainer, Squadron PAO wrote inthe CAP 2006 Yearbook, I hadthe great honor of speaking with afew of the Tuskegee Airmen andthey have so many things to tellhow they overcame their obstaclesand that others can do thesame. Self-discipline, hard work

    and determination brought thesegentlemen through and that is alesson for all young people. Ifthere is one thing I walked awaywith it is that no one is going tomake your dream come true butyou.

    CAP members learn these skillsin order to receive their Emer-gency Radio Operations Certifica-tion. It was amazing to see this inoperation, said C/Capt Zarrilli. Iwas fascinated by the variousMorse code keys and hearing Cap-tain Ruben talk about how hecould communicate via Morsecode to people around the world

    even though they didnt speak thesame language. If they had metface to face they could not havetalked to each other! As an ExMerchant Marine Radio Officer,and former Air Force AirborneRadio Operator, Captain Rubenknows firsthand how vital commu-nications are to being able to savelives, and he said, That is whyCAP and ARRL are working andtraining together this weekend.

    Civil Air Patrol Cadets and sup-port staff visited Brevard Countyon June 2-4, during an AerospaceDimensions 2006 weekend. Thiswas an event sponsored by the Bre-vard Community College SpaceTecProgram and the U.S. Departmentof Labor.

    One hundred nine FLWG mem-bers, primarily from Group 6 andGroup 11, shared a non-stop aero-space education weekend. Theagenda included visits to BrevardCounty Community College Plane-

    tarium, Kennedy Space Center andCape Canaveral Air Force Stationand a behind the scenes look atrockets and spacecraft residing atthese locations.

    During the evening, trainingcontinued with instruction on bloodborne pathogens, space and sur-vival foods, satellite tool kit, Alka-FujiRocketbuilding,

    directionfindingand radiocommuni-cations.KARSPark,which islocated atthe south gateof Kennedy Space Center on theBanana River, was the base of op-

    erations for this activity.Students aged 12-18 from Coral

    Springs Cadet Squadron and sev-eral other surrounding squadronsfrom Palm Beach and BrowardCounty had a unique opportunity tolearn more about the aerospace in-dustry, tour Cape Canaveral U.S.Air Force Station, Kennedy SpaceCenter Visitor Center, and experi-ence potential careers in space

    technology. Were training futureaerospace technicians, said Dr.Tom Steffen, Department of LaborProject Manager for the ProjectGenesis Department of LaborGrant. Were trying to give theminsight into aerospace technology.

    Mitch Drucker, deputy com-mander for the Coral Springs CadetSquadron, said the cadet programgrooms youths in leadership, emer-gency services and aerospace edu-cation. The Civil Air Patrol is anauxiliary of the U.S. Air Force,

    which is one of the reasons for thestrong military support for the pro-gram, Dr. Steffen said.

    On Sunday, June 4, the cadetspresented awards in recognition ofseveral key personnel involved inmaking this event possible. Theawards ceremony took place at theCape Canaveral Cafeteria and apresentation was made to Lt. Col.

    Doug Stropes, commander of De-tachment One, 45th Mission Sup-port Group, who represented Briga-dier Gen. Mark H. Owen, com-mander of the 45th Space Wing atPatrick Air Force Base.

    The importance of the relation-ship between Civil Air Patrol, Pat-rick AFB and the 45th Space Wingwas also recognized, in addition toall the work by the Coral SpringsCadet Squadron in the planning andexecution of the event, in partner-ship with SpaceTEC.

    The entire event, despite thecomplexity in arranging and imple-menting the multi-faceted program,was a great and inspiring success. Ittakes vision, dedication and team-work and this success is attributednot only to the attendees and those
