Climate and Economy
• Southeast Asia has a tropical and tropical savanna climate due to its location on/near the equator. Flooding is common in the summer months.
• Economic activities in this region include farming, mining, harvesting timber and fishing.
• As a result of clear-cutting in the rainforests, many plants and animals are threatened and/or endangered.

• The culture in this region has been influenced by outside settlers (from China and India), colonial powers (such as Britain, France, Spain and the USA), and the native people living there.
• These groups influence the languages spoken, religions practiced, clothing worn and holidays celebrated.
• The major religions of Southeast Asia include Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and Islam.
• Buddhism is the dominant faith on the mainland, while Indonesia is the world’s largest Muslim country, and the Philippines are predominantly Catholic.
• The major ethnic groups include Burmese, Khmer, Thai, and Malay, there are more than 300 ethnic groups in Southeast Asia.
