Southampton’s Titanic StoryThe most famous ship in the world, the RMS Titanic, pulled

away from White Star Dock in Southampton at the start of her

maiden voyage on 10 April, 1912. Five days later in the early

hours of 15 April she struck an iceberg and sank causing great

loss of life. The disaster made headlines across the world.

The impact of the tragedy was felt no more so than in

Southampton. Most of the crew of the Titanic lived in the city

and more than 500 households in Southampton lost at least

one family member. 538 of the 714 crew members who gave a

Southampton address were lost; the city was devastated. This

exhibition tells their story.

Southampton - Gateway to the WorldSouthampton has unique historic connections with the sea.

Gateway to the World recounts the stories of people who

have departed from or arrived in the port of Southampton

over the last 200,000 years with themes of invaders and

settlers, traders, exiles and soldiers. One gallery is dedicated

to the role the city has played post 1945, and contains an

incredible scale model of the famous liner, Queen Mary.

The Pavilion – Special Exhibition AreaThe Pavilion, the iconic new building attached to the old

Magistrates Court, houses our special exhibitions. These

change on a regular basis which means there is always

something new to see at SeaCity Museum. In 2014/15 The

Southampton Guest Guide: Heritage

EXPLORE THE TRACES of Southampton’s

TUDOR PAST

The Tudor Revels project has at its heart the aim to raise the profile of Southampton’s historic past. The city is well known as the home port for RMS Titanic and as the place where the spitfire was created but it played just as significant part in England’s history at the time of the Tudors. A new guided walk is available to showcase the Tudor town visiting sites and buildings familiar to Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. Anyone sitting in the little park on Cuckcoo Lane taking in the view over Southampton water, is actually sitting in the remains of the town house of the Earls of Southampton. The third Earl is known as the patron of William Shakespeare but he was also a developer of colonies in the newly discovered Americas, particularly the area known as Virginia, named after Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen.

If you picnic in Town Quay Park you will see the Huguenot garden planted to commemorate the religious refugees who fled to Southampton in the sixteenth century from France and the Low Countries. Across the road you can see the tower of St Juliens chapel, which they were given as a place of worship and ever since the chapel has been known as the French Church. If you take a moment to repose in the little garden on Simnel Street you will be taking your ease in what was once the grand house of Roger Machado, Richmond Herald to King Henry VII, who was with the king at the battle of Bosworth and served him as both herald and spy for many years.

Dating back to 1492, the current Grade 1 listed house has

been home to such characters as eminent Tudor lawyer Lord

Lyster, artist George Rogers and Victorian bonnet maker Eliza

Simmons. Enjoy a vivid and exciting audio-visual show which

explains the history of the house and introduces characters

such as John Dawtrey, who built Tudor House and William

Spranger, who saved it from demolition at the end of the 19th

Century. Elsewhere in the house find lenticular panels and

innovative interactive screens that rotate to show how the

rooms would have looked during different historic periods, in

particular the Tudor, Georgian and Victorian eras.

The reconstructed Tudor and Victorian kitchens demonstrate

how far mod cons have come in the 21st Century. A selection

of restored artefacts of historic importance are on display

in the fascinating museum, including examples of Georgian

and Victorian jewellery, as well as a number of archaeological

finds dating back to the medieval and Tudor periods.

If you are visiting, look out for the drop-in workshops and

regular special events with historic experts on hand to talk

about life in the house throughout its long history.

Visit www.tudorhouseandgarden.com to see what’s

happening during your visit.

There is also a series of interactive activities giving children

the chance to find specific objects around the house, design

their own wall fabrics or tiles, make rubbings of unusual

textures within the building and dress up in period costume.

After a tour of the house, enjoy a cream tea in the café

overlooking the tranquil Tudor knot garden, offering plenty

of opportunities for children to explore safely. Beyond the

garden lies King John’s Palace, the remains of a stone-built

merchant’s house built in the 1200s, which later became part

of the medieval town walls. Check the Tudor House & Garden

website www.tudorhouseandgarden.com or call 023 8083

50 is the magic number for Southampton in 2014 as it celebrates half a century of being granted city status. It’s often thought that a town

automatically becomes a city when it

has a cathedral, a university or a large

population. In fact it can only become

a city when it is granted that status by

Royal Charter.

In September 1958 the County Borough

of Southampton petitioned the Queen

for the town to be raised to the status

of a city. It argued that Southampton

should become a city owing to its

size, its importance as a port and ’the

existence of a true sense of citizenship.’

On February 24 1964 Southampton

became our newest city – and 50 years

on Southampton is celebrating in style

with a host of events.

WEST SIDE STORY which comes to Mayflower Theatre

from 22 April to 3 May changed the course of musical

theatre when it opened on Broadway in 1957 and it still

remains one of the most successful stage shows of all time.

Based on Romeo and Juliet, “WEST SIDE STORY” is set

on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and explores the rivalry

between two teenage gangs; one white, the other Puerto

Rican. The score includes the unforgettable songs ‘Maria’,

‘Tonight’, ‘Somewhere’, ‘America’ and ‘I Feel Pretty’.

The Smash Hit show DIRTY DANCING returns from

10 – 28 June. An unprecedented live experience, exploding

with heart-pounding music, passionate romance and

sensationally sexy dancing.

Seen by millions across the globe this worldwide smash-

hit tells the classic story of Baby and Johnny, two fiercely

independent young spirits from different worlds, who come

together in what will be the most challenging and triumphant

summer of their lives. Featuring hit songs, including “Hungry

Eyes”, “Hey! Baby”, “Do You Love Me?” and the heart

stopping “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life”. Don’t miss your

chance to see Dirty Dancing, a truly spectacular musical

theatre event.

Disney’s THE LION KING will play for nine weeks in

Southampton from 11 July – 6 September

evocative rhythms of Africa, The Lion King will redefine your

expectations of theatre.

A spectacular visual feast, this adaptation of Disney’s classic

film transports audiences to a dazzling world that explodes

with glorious colours, stunning effects and enchanting music.

At its heart is the powerful and moving story of Simba – the

epic adventure of his journey from wide-eyed cub to his

destined role as King of the Pridelands.

The superbly enjoyable West End production of SINGIN’ IN

THE RAIN runs from 16 September till 5 October and is a

smash hit with critics and audiences alike. This spectacular

Nuffield is Southampton’s leading

professional and Hampshire’s only

producing theatre company and

celebrates its 50th birthday this year.

Based at the Nuffield Theatre, on the

University of Southampton’s Highfield

campus, just 15 minutes from the city centre, Nuffield

brings theatre of the highest quality to Southampton.

Highlights of 2014 include: Noel Coward’s Tonight

at 8.30 (24 April – 24 May 2014), a collection of nine

one-act plays from vaudeville to satire, from broad

farce to intricate comedy of manners, from melodrama

to romance, these plays span the full, glorious range of

Coward’s writing. Performed in rep, come once, twice

or three times – or for the most adventurous, try one

of our marathon days when you can see all nine plays

back to back with meal intervals in Nuffield Kitchen in

between.

At the end of May, Cheek by Jowl present the vivid and

violent Jacobean tragedy, ‘Tis Pity She’s A Whore’,

and in June, Northern Stage present an adaptation of

American Joseph Heller’s classic novel, Catch 22.

In August, Nuffield joins some of Southampton’s

leading cultural organisations for a month long arts

festival in the City’s Guildhall Square. Nuffield will

present Football’s Coming Home, a play based on

the highs and lows of following one of the country’s

greatest football clubs, the Saints. Performances

will take place in a temporary outdoors stadium built

to recreate the drama and spectacle of attending a

football match.

Hans Christian Anderson’s children’s fairytale, The

Snow Queen, is Nuffield’s 2014 Christmas show

(December 2014 – January 2015). With a spectacular

set and stunning special effects, this production

promises to entertain and enchant all ages.

In addition, Nuffield has a regular Saturday children’s

theatre series and welcomes CBeebies’ Charlie and

Lola to the Theatre during October half term in 2014.

Rich Hall, Robin Ince and Paul Chowdry visit Nuffield

in the spring as part of our comedy season. Nuffield

Youth Theatre will present The Laramie Project Cycle

(10 – 12 April 2014) investigating the murder of a young

gay man Matthew Shepherd in Laramie, Wyoming; an

act of such brutality and hate that shocked America

into taking a difficult look at itself.

Nuffield Kitchen offers a delicious range of snacks and

lunches on weekdays, and is open on performance

evenings for pre show dinners and pre/post show

drinks. Booking in advance the evening is advisable as

the restaurant can get very busy.

There is plenty of free parking on campus from 5pm

every evening, at weekends and during the university

holiday period. The uni-link bus service runs direct from

the city centre to the Theatre and beyond to Eastleigh

and Southampton Airport Parkway - and a theatre

ticket gets you a free ride one way.

ALYS SCOTT HAWKINSWhen Southampton based artist Alys Scott Hawkins embarked on her project to hand draw a map representing all the businesses on bustling Bedford Place, she had no idea quite how absorbing the work would become.

Having grown up in the area Alys

was fully aware of the charms of the

independent quarter which boasts

businesses with a Victorian pedigree

(W.J French and Sons are one of

the oldest surviving shoe making

businesses in the UK. The business

started in 1794 and they moved to

Bedford Place in 1890) and those

deploying the very latest technology

(Electric Bike World).

“I grew up in the Bedford Place area

and went to school at St Anne’s so I

thought I knew the area pretty well.

“But this project has taught me so much

– and made me really curious to find out

more,” she said.

The idea for the map was hatched after

running a workshop at Hepwright’s

Vintage shop and hearing the memories

of locals speaking about the changing

nature of the street.

“The idea was for me to draw a map

for the whole street and collect the

snippets of conversations and treasured

memories,” explained Alys.

Funding for the project was secured

through Solent University where Alys

teaches and the Bedford Place Map

Project was born.

17

Working with Emma Golby-Kirk from

NOW Heritage, who specialises in oral

history, students from Solent University

were taught interview techniques and

sent out to capture the reminiscences of

local people.

And online, people with photos and

memorabilia were encouraged to

download their treasures for all to enjoy.

“The online side of the project has

developed a life of its own,” admitted

Alys.”We’ve had 90-year-olds sending

us emails from their ipads and the

facebook and twitter accounts have

really taken off.”

Fascinating photos, documents and

memories have been shared and these

have spawned reminiscences across

the city.

Bedford Place has always been a

thoroughfare and it was because people

used it to get from A to B that it started

to be developed.

The earliest Ordnance Survey maps give

a beautifully detailed picture of what

the street was like in 1865 and how

the elegant homes became business

frontages as the years went by.

Alys plans to launch her map at the

Bedford Place Vintage Family Festival

on Sunday June 22 and she hopes to

attract further funding to make a series

of films about the area.

“I would like to take the audio material

and make a series of short animated

films. I’ve also got ideas for an

interactive i:book and we’ve thought

about shops having QR codes so you

can access information about them on

your smart phone.

“The possibilities are endless,” she said.

Southampton Guest Guide: Future Southampton

A MOUTH-WATERING Prospect for Southampton

Watermark WestQuayExciting restaurant names such as Jamie’s, Wahaca, Byron

and Five Guys could be among the mouthwatering mix

being served up as part of the new Watermark WestQuay

development.

Discussions are underway with London-based restaurants

who are keen to come out of the capital and they are

seriously looking at Southampton.

The first phase of Watermark WestQuay will see a landmark

cinema building, up to 20 restaurants and additional retail

space, alongside newly created public space in front of the

city’s medieval town walls.

The new public space will help to really bring Watermark

WestQuay to life and there are plans being hatched to use the

area for markets and outdoor music events.

Ocean VillageAt Ocean Village, which is home to the Harbour Lights

Picturehouse and Cineworld Cinema, the Admirals Quay

development is rapidly taking shape.

As well as creating beautiful new homes by the water, work is

also underway to bring more top restaurants and cafés to the

marina so everyone can enjoy relaxing by the waterside.

Another exciting element of the changes taking place at

Ocean Village will be the development of a new five star hotel.

Work is due to start this summer on the 85-bedroom hotel

and luxury apartments complex. The hotel will become part of

the Harbour Hotels group and will be called The Southampton

Harbour Hotel. A major attraction will be a rooftop version of

The Jetty, the award-winning restaurant run by the group’s

top Michelin chef, Alex Aitken.

Visitors to the city in the coming years will be able to enjoy even more places to stop for a tasty bite to eat at lunchtime or relax over a delicious dinner before heading to the theatre or cinema. Here is a taster of the major developments taking root in Southampton...

A heritage, cargo-passenger steamship

included in the National Historic Fleet,

the SS Shieldhall was launched on

the Clyde in 1955, and later owned

by Southern Water until her purchase

for £20,000 in 1988 by the charity that

still operates her. Today the Shieldhall

is a unique seagoing ‘time capsule’.

Whilst other heritage ships are held

permanently in dry dock, the Shieldhall

is very active, with a programme that

allows passengers to access the

impressive steam engines at work in

the engine room itself, and the bridge,

complete with traditional instruments

and gleaming brasswork.

In April 2013 a HLF grant of £1.4 million

was awarded for the project

‘Saving Shieldhall – Conservation in

Action’, securing her future for the

next 25 years.

Shieldhall continues to operate a variety

of day cruises in the Solent and further

afield. Passengers are encouraged to

see how the ship operates, and meet

the Captain and volunteer crew. Expect

a commentary relating to many of the

sites and cruise and container ships

that Shieldhall passes during her trips

along Southampton Water and beyond.

Shieldhall is considered a very stable

ship, providing an excellent viewing

platform. There is plenty of covered

seating on board, and a fully licensed

bar and saloon serving hot snacks and

refreshments.

Sharing the secrets of the best places to shop, sip and stroll...

Afternoon tea?

Try The Mercure Southampton

Centre Dolphin Hotel. Their

afternoon tea is great, with modern

cake stands and plenty to eat with

as much tea as you can drink!

They cater for families of all ages

and is located on the High Street

so a really great atmosphere. If it’s

a special occasion you can include

Champagne into your afternoon

tea too!

We ask a local who is passionate about Southampton to give us the inside track on where to visit in the city. Abi Coen, Revenue Manager at The Mercure Southampton Centre Dolphin Hotel, gave us these top tips.

Where would you recommend as a must visit for visitors and why?

Walking around the old town gives

the visitor to Southampton a great

sense of its history and the links to

famous people like Jane Austen.

Tudor House Museum is well worth

a visit - my favourite place is the

ruins at the end of the High Street

near to Town Quay. The ghost

tours and walking tours are well

worth booking onto as you get to

see so many interesting places you

might otherwise miss.

LITTLE BLACK B KOO

Which bar serves the best cocktails? Which one is your favourite? The new Mexican place on Oxford

Street called Chimichanga does a

happy hour from 5-7pm - it’s good

value and they have excellent food

and relaxing snugs to relax in with

friends and family. My favourite

cocktail is a classic Mojito, I love

the way that the bar tender creates

the drink.

Perfect day in Southampton:

• Mayflower park for a walk

and see what Cruise Liners

are in.

• Go shopping at West Quay

• Go for a dip at The Quays

swimming pool and relax

before...

• Happy hour Cocktails at

Chimichanga.

• Dinner at Prezzos in

Oxford street.

• Live music at the Platform

Tavern, the Brook, the White

Star, or at the Joiners.

Sunday lunch?

I would recommend the Cowherds

pub on The Avenue for a traditional

roast but make sure you book

as it gets very busy. If you want

something a little less conventional

I would go to the White Star in

Oxford Street. The food is great -

it is the only Michelin Star

restaurant in the city giving you

wonderful food without the London

price tag.

28 Oxford St, SO14 3DJ

023 8082 1990

Where would you go for a romantic meal?

Pulcinellas in Bedford Place. It is

romantic, comfortable and relaxing

- the food is great and well priced.

I recommend the Rib Eye Steak

- its the best! They have a variety

of nights from wild to romantic -

definitely check this out.

16 Carlton Pl, SO15 2DY

023 8033 5100

If you could recommend one thing to see or do what would it be?

See a show at the Mayflower.

The building is historic and

beautiful - and you get to see

West End shows. Its just amazing,

I’m seeing Dirty Dancing in June

and can’t wait.

Southampton Guest Guide: New ideas

Brewing upa WINNING new idea for Southampton

A landmark Southampton building

dating back to the 15th century is being

given a new lease of life by husband

and wife Stewart & Mandy,

and brewer Aidan Lavin.

The couple have established a

reputation for serving great beer in a

convivial atmosphere at The Platform

Tavern near Town

Quay.

And now they are

all set to take their

winning formula to the

historic Wool House,

with plans to turn

it into a brewhouse

and quirky venue

for weddings and

celebrations.

The Grade I-listed

building, which was built in 1415 as a

storehouse for wool, used to contain the

city’s maritime museum but it has been

empty since the museum moved to its

new home at the civic centre.

“We intend to breathe life back into

this wonderful building and bring the

historic art of brewing back to our city

by creating Southampton’s very first

Brew-House.

“Not only will we have a working

brewery but customers will be able to

watch our brewers at work and whilst

doing so can sample our fine ales and

pair this with something from one of our

menus,” said Mandy.

The Platform Tavern already brews its

own beer but the Wool House will allow

them to further

develop their ales.

Mandy explained:

“Before the

development of

large commercial

breweries in

England, pubs,

taverns, inns and

ale houses would

have brewed and

sold there own ales

under the same roof.

“We want to return to this tradition.

We want to produce comparatively

small batches of high quality beer of all

styles and strengths to be served via

cask, keg and bottle, on site, for the

discerning palates of the good people

of Southampton.

“Our beautiful bespoke 6bbl (1000 litre)

brewery will be on show to all visitors

and we aim to educate guests about the

brewing process via our well informed,

enthusiastic staff, scheduled brewery

tours and free handout literature.

“Of course we don’t expect everyone

to share our love of beer, but we are

sure our passion for flavour will offer

something for everyone in our range of

soft drinks, wines and spirits and hot

drinks.

Here’s what head brewer Aidan has to

say about his job ...

“As the brewer here at Dancing Man

Brewery it is down to me what goes

onto our products. A responsibility I

take very seriously!

“I believe there should be no expense

spared when selecting raw ingredients

to craft our ales. As a very proud

Southampton resident I feel duty bound

to give our fellow Sotonians the best

ales humanly possible.

“I feel equally proud in our aim

that visitors to the city might find

Southampton synonymous with good

quality ale. Our country’s national drink.

“To these ends I use traditional methods

of brewing, coupled with newer

techniques developed from hundreds

of years of our rich and successful

brewing history, to produce a range

of award winning ales inspired by a

passion for flavour and aroma of the

highest quality.

“As a true believer in innovation and

progression, I fully embrace modern

beer dispense techniques such as kegs

and bottles, whilst maintaining that for

some beer styles our traditional cask ale

method is superior.

“For this reason we aim to cover all of

these mediums (cask, keg & bottle), to

bring people the widest range of beer

styles possible.

“With full flavour being the goal, I

choose not to employ the tradition of

using isinglass finings (a product made

from the swim bladder of sturgeon fish)

as a clarification agent.

“This means that they pour with a

beautiful natural haze, fuller body and

an enhanced flavour and aroma. For

this reason our beers are also vegan

and vegetarian friendly.

“Our aim is to keep growing and

supply more people with our products,

whilst maintaining and improving our

standards, to become something the

people of Southampton can be truly

proud of.”

When it comes to creating lip-smacking flavour, artisanal gelato makers Tooti’s have got it licked. The Bedford Place gelateria uses traditional methods and the finest ingredients to make every mouthful as delicious as the first. For those of you pondering over the question ‘Isn’t gelato just a fancy word for ice cream?’ - here is a little insight into what makes the difference.Tooti’s artisan gelato contains a higher proportion of milk to cream reducing the fat content by around 2/3 compared with industrially produced ice creams.Ice creams are churned faster and harder than gelato pumping them full of air and increasing their volume by at least 25 and up to 90 percent. This makes them a little fluffier. Gelato is churned at a much slower pace, keeping it dense and more flavourful. It was the Neapolitans who were credited with creating the first true ice creams, which appeared in an 18th century cookbook. Our love for gelato and ice cream has grown over the centuries and now Tooti’s is part of a new generation of makers with a passion for gelato.Tooti’s offers a unique, modern-day gelateria

dining experience with more than 36 different varieties of gelato and sorbet ranging from traditional vanilla and strawberry to Eton mess, bubblegum and tiramisu. They serve freshly

prepared crepes, waffles with a touch of vanilla and an exciting range of soft drinks, cocktails and other alcoholic beverages.Their delicious sundaes and milkshakes are created using gelato, while their sorbet smoothies use sorbets that are all dairy free and vegan friendly.Tooti’s offers a family friendly atmosphere with retro games consoles built in to the

booths, board games and a football table that are all free to use.Rumour has it we are going to be basking in the sunbeams this year. Rain or shine, Tootis is the perfect place to bring your family for the essential taste of summer.
