St John’s Youthy with pets and pictures.

Youthy goes to the dogs

Saint John’s Youthy enjoyed an unusual night on Sunday 19th March, as the young people were joined by an array of furry friends. Dogs of every shape and size were accompanied by Guinea Pigs and pictures of the pets at home. Each person introduced their pet, saying a little about them, and with some hilarity as names ranging from Bella to Beans and

Buddy to Mash were shared. Prizes were given by Youth Worker Lucy Mann for a whole range of attributes including tiniest dog, and fluffiest coat. The pictures, mostly brought on phones, though in the case of Marshmallow the dog beau-tifully framed, also created humour with Amelia Clark-son’s ‘bulldog sticking his tongue out’ winning the

funniest category. Revd David commented, “In a world where stories of animal cruelty abound thinking about how we care for creation, the love animals freely give, and the joy they bring is really important.” With not a single accident in the church, the evening was a resounding success with happy pets and happy people.

Bowel cancer screening: Have you received your kit?The County Durham Well-being for Life service is working in the local com-munity to promote bowel cancer screening and en-courage men and women to take part.Wellbeing for Life are working in partnership with local GP surgeries and community venues to give men and women in County Durham the opportunity to find out more about bowel cancer screening.1 in 14 men and 1 in 19 women will be diagnosed with bowel cancer during their lifetime. There were 41,300 new cases of bowel cancer in the UK in 2014. The NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme invites all men and women aged between 60 and 74 for screening every 2 years. You need to be registered

with a GP to receive the screening kit. If you are older than 74, you can still have screening every 2 years but you won’t automatically be invited. To receive a screening kit after the age of 74, phone 0800 707 60 60. People younger than 60 aren’t eligible for the bowel cancer screening test, but can have bowel scope screening. It is important to know your body and get checked out if anything changes that is not normal for you. If you have symptoms, are worried about a family history of bowel cancer, or worried about your bowel health in any way, speak to your GP.Vicki Moffat, Wellbeing Co-ordinator said: “The bowel cancer screening kit is a

home test kit and checks for the presence of blood in a poo sample. It has been shown to reduce the risk of dying from bowel cancer by 16%. You carry out the test in the privacy of your own home and a full set of instructions come with the kit. It may sound a bit un-pleasant to do, but it could save your life.”Bowel cancer screening aims to find cancers early. Very early bowel cancers are usually easier to treat, may need less treatment, and are more likely to be cured. It is important to take part in your bowel screening whenever you receive the kit.For further information, contact Vicki Moffat, Well-being for Life Coordinator (East Durham Hub) on 0191 5274150.

chased lots of garden items and a BBQ.“We would like to thank Homebase for the items they very kindly donated for the home and a big thank you to the Shildon Community bus for the loan of the bus,” said a spokes-person.The home then enjoyed a very lively afternoon on Monday 20th March when

Holly Lodge staff pass driver training for community bus

Chris Millett made a return visit.“Chris is very popular with everyone at Holly Lodge, it was a great party atmosphere enjoyed by residents, family, staff and our fantastic friend of the home Margaret Jones, who contributed to the fun and laughter as always. their health outcomes by giving them a place to try new activities and to meet and make new friends.” Funding for the project comes from the Area Action Partnership (AAP) Neighourhood Budget. The Health Express project was launched in 2012 with a range of partners including Bishop Auckland and Shildon AAP, Public Health, Durham Dales and Easington Clinical Commissioning Group, South Durham En-terprise Agency, livin – the social housing provider, the Primary Care Partner-ship and other members of the community to take a strategic approach to im-proving health outcomes locally.

With only three weeks to go, students and staff at Greenfield Community College are working flat out, recreating the magic of the giant hit musical ‘We Will Rock You - for schools’.The time is the future, in a place that was once called Earth. Globalisation is complete. Everywhere, the kids watch the same movies, wear the same fashions and think the same thoughts. It’s a safe, happy, ‘Ga Ga’ world. Unless you’re a rebel.

Unless you want to rock. On iplanet all the musical instruments are banned. The company computers generate tunes and every-body downloads them. It is an age of boy bands and of girl bands, of boy and girl bands and of girl bands with a couple of boys in them that look like girls anyway. Nothing is left to chance, hits are scheduled years in advance. With Ben Elton’s hilarious plot line and live perfor-mances of Queen’s classic hits, this production will

get you rocking in your seats! Tickets are on sale now priced £5 and £2.50, avail-able from Greenfield Com-munity College’s Aycliffe campus school office. Show dates are the 4th, 5th and 6th April at 7pm.“Come along and have a great evening,” encour-aged a spokesperson for the school. For information contact The Performing Arts Department on 01325 300378.

Dear Editor,

Spectrum Roller Skating Club would like to say a big thank you to our community for all the support we have received. In less than three years the club has established and af-filiated to FARS (federation of artistic roller skating) and made it to a National Com-petition, exceeding our expectations. We are very lucky to have phenomenal skaters who are dedicated to roller skating and com-mitted family support, but our community pulled together to assist the club and helped us (as coaches) to help the skaters to achieve their dreams.

We are very lucky to have support from Spectrum Leisure, Willington who agreed access to their fantastic mini bus and our parent Lisa Godwin who volunteered to endure the 15 hour round trip to Haywards Heath for our recent National Competition.Local councillors provided funding to purchase club kit. This enabled the team to feel united and more professional. The skaters said they felt more confident and like they belonged together.

Thank you to all the club skaters and families who helped with fundraising in order for us to get to Haywards Heath. Thank you to B&M Shildon who allowed us to bag pack to raise funds. Thank you to Shildon Alive who have provided free fruit healthy snacks, the members of our church community and SCYPAN who support us. All of this hard work allowed our five skaters to take part in a national competition, watch top class skaters - learn and develop, gain experience and become inspired. We appreciate this so very much.

Tracy Stevens, Spectrum (North East) Roller Skating Club.

Shildon return to winning ways but bow out of title race

Shildon collected maximum points from their last two league matches but with North Shields continuing their winning streak, the Railwaymen cannot now catch the league leaders and, while it has been in-evitable for some weeks, it is now officially con-firmed that they will be relinquishing their league championship crown at the end of the season. However, for now they remain the reigning cham-poions and on Wednesday, March 15th, they travelled to bottom club Guisbor-ough Town and came away with all three points after a 4-2 win, although the match was not as clear cut as they might have expected.Guisborough shocked Shildon by taking the lead after 9 minutes through

Anthony Hume.Parity was soon resumed when Shildon were awarded a soft penalty which Matty Robson converted at the second attempt after the initial kick was saved. The Railwaymen then went ahead after 25 minutes when star man Lewis Wing’s long range thunder-bolt crashed into the roof of the net. Wing, who has signed terms with Premier League Middlesbrough and will join them at the end of the season, then added his second and Shildon’s third before the interval.Shildon were reduced to 10 men on 40 minutes when Matty Robson pulled back last man Steve Roberts, but the sending off didn’t prevent them from increas-ing their lead in the second half before a late Guisbor-

ough consolation for a 4-2 final score. On Saturday, 18th March, the Railwaymen saw off Seaham Red Star by 2-0 at Dean Street, although they had goalkeeper Nick Liv-ersedge to thank for saving several one-on-one efforts as the visitors regularly broke the offiside trap. First half goals from Amar Purewal, followed by a trademark Lewis Wing free kick were enough to ensure all three points and provide a welcome boost in confidence ahead of a League Cup semi-final en-counter against high flyers, South Shields. The competition repre-sents Shildon’s last hope of gaining, and retaining, silverware this season being another trophy of which they are the current holders.

Having won promotion last season, Shildon AFC Under 12s took time to adapt to the competitiveness of the new league with results and luck often being against them.By the time they travelled to Normanby on Sunday 19th March they found themselves just above the relegation zone with three games to play. From the kick off, Shildon dominated the play, pinning Normanby in their own half and creating several chances. Midway through the half Shildon’s pressure finally paid off when Michael Gaffney scored a well taken volley to give the visitors a lead they held on to until the break.Shildon continued to dominate the play in the second half and soon Micheal doubled the lead before going on to score twice more, collecting a

hat-trick and the man of the match gong.Coach Andrew Finch said: “Every player in every position gave their all to secure the three points.“The final score of 0-4 flat-tered Normanby as it could have easily been 10.”Shildon AFC under 12s are: Elliott Finch; Rory Francis; Ethan Hunter; Luke Whit-taker; Leo Whelam; Reece Vasey; Cole Layfield; Brandan Woods; Anthony Jary; Liam Whittaker; Michael Gaffney; Charle Crinion and Kian Dixon.Next season the team goes to 11-a-side and are hoping to sign at least two players.Anyone interested can contact the side through ‘Shildon Community Football Centre’ Facebook page or by visiting the Scouts Field, West Road at 10.30am on Saturday mornings and asking for Andrew Finch or Alan Layfield.
