CAPA Showcase
This annual event continues to grow from strength to strength. On Tuesday
27th June and the audience listened to a wonderful array of talented
performances. Ms Hardy, Ms Gregov, Ms Sainty, Ms De Paor and Ms Kite are
exceptional teachers who going above and beyond to nurture, support and
encourage their students to perform to a very high
standard. The students clearly enjoyed the
experience and I certainly enjoyed hearing the rehearsals. Many thanks to the
SSHS community for supporting this excellent showcase of work, teachers who
assisted with supervision, Ms Hardy for her overall organisation of the night, Ms
Lawrence and Ms Kelso and Year 12 Hospitality for providing a delicious supper.
Business Partnership Committee
Ms Stell chaired another very successful Business Partnership Committee
last week. The success of this group is captured by Mike Owen’s recent
blog post – he is a vital part of our committee. We look forward to
bringing more businesses into this innovative program at South Sydney
High school.

Multicultural Flag Day on Friday 28th July from 11:15 pm – 12:30 pm
I would like to encourage as many parents as possible to put this date into you diary.
This day reminds us about the wonderful cultural richness which exists within our
school and the wider community. I would encourage as many students to participate in
this great celebration of cultural diversity.
Goodbye Term 2
As another term draws to a close and I would like to acknowledge the hard work and commitment shown by
so many South Sydney High School students. Our teaching staff work very hard to provide many avenues for
students to maximise learning and I encourage students to make the most of these opportunities which are
presented to them. We are very proud of the learning culture which exists at South Sydney High School and it
is wonderful so many students wearing our school uniform with pride.
I hope to see you all on Tuesday 25th July for our annual Parent Teacher night for Year 7 to Year 11 students.
Please see further information in this newsletter about booking procedures.
It has been a very busy and productive term and I wish all staff and students a well-earned break.
Kind Regards
Robyn Matthews

Science Update The Science Staff recently attended a Department of Education course as a
part of our familiarisation of the new Senior Science Course Syllabuses that
will be implemented in 2018 for year 11 students. We are excited to be
learning and preparing for these new syllabuses, including the introduction
of a brand new course- Investigating Science.
Year 7 and 8 Science students have been busy growing alum crystals for the
past 6 weeks for the NSW Crystal Growing Competition. They have just been
packaged and sent off to be judged on clarity, shape and size. Good luck!!
What a huge term it has been in Sport; from School and Zone Carnivals; School Team success; to individual
achievement for students in a range of Sports.
Term 2 is always a busy term on the sporting calendar and 2017 has been no exception.
On an individual achievement front we have had a number of students represent Regional Teams this term.
Firstly, early in Term 2, Makayla Manu (Year 8) was involved in the Sydney East SSA 15’s Girls Touch Football
Team which competed in the CHS (Combined High Schools) 15 Year Championships, held in Mudgee. This is
the breeding ground for the future stars of Touch Football. Makayla’s performances were outstanding, she
showed both great sportsmanship and a high level of skill throughout the weekend; establishing herself as an
Opens Team player of the future.
Also in Touch Football, Rose Jennings of Year 10 (Pictured Left)
represented Sydney East SSA at the Open Girls CHS Tournament
held at Bateau Bay. Only new to the sport, Rose demonstrated a
high level of aptitude and ability throughout the tournament;
playing through injury and discomfort for large parts of the 3 day
tournament, Rose earned both high levels of praise and respect
from her team mates and coach.
Along with the achievements of these two Girls, this week (Week
10) we have two boys representing Sydney East SSA at the Open
Boys CHS Touch Football tournament. Both Jonah Walker and
Jayden Smith-Jorquera in Year 11 are putting their skills to the test
at the tournament held in Penrith. We wish them the best of luck.
Still on the individual front, Sebastian Twaddell in Year 11
was selected in the Sydney East SSA Team for Golf which is
competing at the CHS Golf Championships being held this
week at Nelson’s Bay. Sebastian is a very talented golfer
whose game has developed to a high level over the past 2
years; again we wish him the best of luck.
Term 2 Sport Report 2017
Our School Teams have also been performing very well. Term 2 saw Our Open Boys Touch Team progress to
the Final 4 of the Sydney East Championships, the Open Boys and 15’s Boys Soccer Teams reached the 3rd
Round of their respective tournaments. Both of the Open Boys and 15 Boys Rugby League Teams have
performed exceptionally well. The Open Boys team were Area Champions in the NSW Rugby League School
Boy Trophy and finished in the top 4 teams at the Regional Competition level. The 15’s team are one win away
from making it to the CHS round of the Buckley Shield Competition which puts them in the top 20 teams in
the state. This game is being played on the last day of term.
At a Carnival level; we had a very successful School Athletics Carnival, held on the 24th May at Hensley
Athletics Field. All of the students who attended and competed did themselves and their Houses proud, with
high levels of school spirit on display. In total 85 students qualified for the Zone Carnival, showing that the
talent pool is wide across all age groups. This was also evident at the Zone Athletics Carnival at which the
efforts of all students involved, including the amazing volunteers, ensured that as a school we had great
success. Successful students from this carnival will compete in Week 3 of Term 3 at the Regional Carnival.
There were also some excellent results in Cross Country with a number of students qualifying from the Zone
Carnival held in Week 6 for the Regional Cross Country Carnival, held in week 8. These students were: Jed Hay
(Yr 7), Angelo Lee (Yr 7), Maddison McGuigan (Yr 7), Jake Aguilar (Yr 8), Baylei McGuigan (Yr 9), Rosie Jones (Yr
9), Shira Arakawa (Yr 10) and Rose Jennings (Yr 10).
Finally, at the end of this term we say farewell to Dana Schmidt in Year 10. Dana has
been on a Study Abroad experience throughout the first 2 terms of this year. In the area
of Sport, she has excelled representing the school and Sydney East Region at the CHS
level in Swimming and competing at the NSW All-Schools Championships. To
acknowledge her achievements, Dana has been awarded a School Blue for Swimming. A
Blue is the highest award that a student can receive in school sport and Dana is a most
worthy recipient. We wish her the best of luck as she returns home to Germany.

Year 9 Child Studies Update
On Thursday 15th of June the child studies class made a visit to the Royal Woman’s Hospital at Randwick. We
first had a talk by three of the staff where they spoke to the group about the services the hospital provides,
and the midwife answered many of the student’s questions. We then went on a tour, but unfortunately, we
were unable to go inside the birthing suites as they were all in use. One of our groups saw a day-old baby, been
cuddled by her father (who by the way was an ex SSHS student) and another group saw a woman who just had
a baby ( who also was an ex SSHS student). We would like to thank the hospital for allowing us the visit.
Please note that deposit for formal was due at the end of first Term. The
deposit due was $50.
We have committed to a room with 120 people.
At this stage only 50 students have paid the full deposit. We need to ensure
the full deposit is paid by Week 1 Term 3 or the Formal will be unable to go
ahead at this venue.
Full payment of $109 needs to be paid by 1st September which is week 7.
Payments can be made over the phone or by cash or card at the office.

Congratulations to our wonderful SSCIM Chess team and their inspirational mentor Ms Rachel Watkins from
the South Sydney Mathematics Department. This term the team have been working to prepare for the Inter-
School Chess Competition that took place on Wednesday 21st June at Rose Bay Secondary School. We have
lost many of our seasoned and accomplished chess players of old such as Jaeyong Sim, Syahmi Mohd Nasir
and Ketti Ketmontri whose busy senior study schedules have prevented them from playing any more than oc-
casional games of chess at SSCIM. However thanks to the efforts of Ms Watkins and enthusiastic younger play-
ers, chess is slowly rebuilding on Mondays at SSCIM. We have lots of talented junior players ensuring that the
strong reputation South Sydney has built up on the inter-school competition circuit is back on track.
Congratulations to the team who played valiantly on Wednesday 21st June and who managed to finish fourth
overall in the competition: Year 7 Students: Gifari Notowidigdo, Hayden Ingle and Jacob Cross. Year 8 Stu-
dents: Matthew Sanders, Anthony Sitnikoski, Liam Mungovan, Luti Maile and Jake Aguilar. Thanks also to Ms
Watkins who accompanied the team to the competition and encouraged our players throughout a challenging
day devoted to a game of strategy and skill.
Well done to South Sydney’s SSCIM Chess Team
Year 9 Visual Arts Year 9 students are working hard to finish their coil pots ready for bisque firing before the holidays.
A fantastic effort has been made by all the students and we look forward to seeing the end products.
Anh and Rafael working on their pots.
Our school community was treated to an amazing show on Tuesday night. CAPA
elective students took to the stage to wow the audience with an entertaining
program of music and drama. The students revelled in the opportunity to perform for
family and friends. Many of the students also had artwork on display showing off their
diverse talents.
Once more a considerable effort was put into preparing the students by Ms Gregov, Ms Sainty and Ms De Paor.
Mr Mooney, our UNSW Preservice Music teacher, went above and beyond in helping to prepare the performers
leading up to and on the night. Ms Kite, ably assisted by Bailey Targett from Year 7, manned the lighting and
sound booth adding atmosphere to the event.
The audience enjoyed delicious soup prepared and served by Ms Kelso, Ms Lawrence, Ms Deeks and the
Hospitality students during interval. A great idea for a chilly night.
I would also like to acknowledge the staff and students who volunteered to assist on the night and ensured that
we could offer the best possible experience for our students and the audience.

Sydney East Table Tennis KO
South Sydney High School’s Table Tennis team recently competed in the Sydney East Table Tennis KO at the
Whitlam Leisure Centre, Liverpool. Moana Smith (Yr 11), Dabin Haam (Yr 11), Jefferson Liauw (Yr 11) and
Emmanuel Raimundo (Yr 9) performed well in both singles and doubles matches. The team was unfortunately
knocked out in the first round by Caringbah High School, but went on to win convincingly against Jannali High
School and Strathfield Girls High School. The team members should be proud of their effort on the day. I am
extremely proud of how the students conducted themselves and represented their school community. They are
already looking forward towards the next tournament. A big thank you to Mr Spencer for helping out with
try-outs and training sessions before the tournament.

Rugby League Report
Sydney Central All Schools Carnival
On Wednesday 28th June our Under 14 and Under 16 Rugby League teams competed in the Sydney Central All
Schools Carnival at Centennial Park. Both teams played with enthusiasm and demonstrated great sportsman-
ship all day.
Our Under 16’s team finished runners up and stand out players on the day were Ali Zaman and Andre Wright.
Our under 14’s team completed the day undefeated and were crowned champions. They will now move on to
compete in the NSW State All Schools carnival early in term 3. Stand out players of the day were Faresa Palu,
Josh Wildman and Daniel Kopasakis. We would also like to thank the parents who showed up to support our
school teams.

To all Year 11 Parents and Guardians
All Year 11 students were given their note for the compulsory year 11 Crossroads camp many weeks ago.
There was a payment plan attached to the letter to spread the cost of the camp over several weeks. Thank you
to all those parents/guardians who have made payments. For the rest of those students, permission notes
and money need to be paid as soon as possible as the camp will be in week 4 term 3, which is not that far
away. If you have financial difficulties, please do not hesitate to contact the school so that arrangements can
be made.
Sincerely
