Dear friends,It is with gratitude that we thank you for your support of student success at South Puget Sound Community College. We hope you will share our enthusiasm and excitement as you review the 2016 annual report. Without our donors and community, the many additional gifts, scholarships and endowments for student success would not be possible.

In the last year, you helped fund over $450,000 in scholarships and grants; dollars that impact

student lives and increase access to education. Because of your generosity, we initiated 15 new scholarships this year, and awarded $50,000 in Faculty and Professional Development Awards.

If you are looking for opportunities to visit campus, we would encourage you to check our website throughout the year for Arts and Entertainment performances in our Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts. Our student athletes are enjoying great success; come cheer on our Women’s Volleyball and Men’s Soccer starting in September. The Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams hit the courts in November; we will certainly be celebrating our Men’s Basketball team as the reigning NWAC West Regional Champions.

Thank you again for your continued support and commitment to the future of South Puget Sound Community College Students.

Sincerely,Lynnette McCarty2016 Foundation Board President

The Foundation solicits funding for over 40 departmental programs

and events each year to support activities that serve to enrich the

student’s educational experience here at SPSCC. The Artist &

Lecture Series, Jazz Series, Athletics Boosters, Automotive Tool Fair and

the Diversity and Equity Center’s FIRE Summit and Queer I Am annual

events are a sample of the numerous programs and events that would not

exist without the generous support of our donors.

New Programs in 2016

The healthcare field is growing faster than most, and SPSCC students are well positioned for a variety of patient and non-patient occupations. Medical Billing and Coding is an in-demand certificate enabling students to earn a job right after completion.

SPSCC is proud to be the first nursing program in the state to feature a new Associate of Nursing Transfer Degree. This program is fully approved by the Washington State Nursing Commission, and allows students to transfer to a BSN program as a senior needing only one more year of schooling to complete.

YEAR IN HIGHLIGHTS

Jonathan WhitneyClass of 2018

Recipient: Rachel Joanne Weiner Memorial Scholarship

Jonathan will be the first in his family to graduate college. When he was 20, his life took a turn for the worse as he struggled with prison time, marriage, divorce, drug use, and homelessness. Once he realized he wanted more out of life, Jonathan made a plan to change his entire self. He got clean from drugs, found housing and a job, and started building a better life. Still, he knew that a minimum wage job was not going to cut it and college had to be part of his goals. Jonathan was encour-aged to learn about opportunities for funding through grants and scholarships.

After applying and being awarded the Rachel Joanne Weiner Memorial Scholarship, Jonathan expressed his appreciation to the community for donating to his schol-arship, remarking, “The money from the SPSCC Foundation has helped me buy a computer to allow me to be more efficient and successful in school, and it also lessened my burden of bills at home allowing me to put 100% into my schooling.”

Jonathan has a 3.88 GPA and is the Chair of the Makers Club, a space for de-signers, engineers, architects, and artists to build things for the College and the community. After SPSCC, Jonathan has some big plans: “I plan on pursuing my engineering schooling at UC Davis or WSU. I would like to be an Engineering Manager at an Aerospace company.”

STUDENT PROFILE

Craft Brewing and Distilling The craft beverage industry is one of the state’s fastest growing industries. Our new 2-year degree, launching in fall 2017, is a unique way for students to combine interests in science, business, technology, and creativity. After program completion, students will be prepared to successfully open their own craft beverage operations or support small start-up operations in their local community.

Clippers AthleticsSPSCC Clipper athletes continue to impress! Women’s Volleyball had an amazing inaugural season, finishing #2 in Total Service Aces and #3 in Service Aces per game. Men’s Soccer had a record breaking season with their highest scoring season since 2004, and their best season standing since 2011, finishing 4th in the West region. Women's Basketball boasted a record-breaking rebound season for one student athlete and graduated seven sophomores with an overall GPA of 3.39. Men's Basketball played their best season in school history including an 18-game winning streak, finishing 1st in the West Region, and making it to the NWAC Elite 8. Let's go #TheClipperNation!

The Diversity & Equity CenterThe Diversity & Equity Center (DEC) supports programs and initiatives that in turn support the success of students—particularly those who come from backgrounds that are underrepresented in higher education. The DEC works with students, faculty, and staff to enhance our competency to interact with the diverse identities, cultures, and backgrounds present at SPSCC. This year, new Foundation scholarships support the DEC's efforts more than ever before, including the LGBTQ and Ally Scholarship, LatinX Youth Summit, Diversity & Equity Scholarship, and the FIRE Summit Scholarship.

EMERGENCY GRANTSEMERGENCY FUNDS: The average SPSCC student is age 28 with at least one dependent. Wages are often low and bills never stop coming. When a financial emergency arises for a student, the SPSCC Foundation can provide emergency funding to pay a water bill, repair a broken car part, pay for a text book, and more. By removing financial barriers and staying responsive to student needs, the Foundation helps students achieve academic success and degree completion. Several endowed and emergency funds are available with nearly $50,000 allocated annually.

SKILLS & TOOLS FUNDS: Students also have access to funds for purchasing tools and supplies. Donors have realized that the high cost of obtaining the necessary tools and supplies can be prohibitive, and have created several funds for our professional vocational students. Programs such as the Betti Tool Fund and the Rosie the Riveter Fund really help students with the tools and supplies they need to be successful, both in the classroom and out on the job.

WHAT IS UNMET NEED?

in financial aid awards

Despite being a state-funded institution with generous donors and an involved community, SPSCC students are faced with a significant unmet need when paying for college. The Foundation is passionately working to decrease the $1 million+ unmet need with a strategic plan that begins with informing the community about this significant barrier to funding education.

Adan EspinoClass of 2018

Recipient: William J. Shurgot Memorial Scholarship in Humanities

Adan's story represents a large group of working middle-class families in Washing-ton State that still find paying for higher education a challenge. Adan and his family made a smart choice to get started toward a bachelor's degree at SPSCC to save money and stay close to home for a few more years.

“SPSCC is the beginning to the rest of my life, where I can ultimately make deci-sions about what to do," said Adan. "But the unfortunate reality of socioeconomics settles in, with the most financially fortunate going to college with little problem and the least financially fortunate never even thinking about college.” Adan was fortunate to receive a scholarship to help pay his tuition as he studies for a future in public office or politics. He wants to become a council person, representative, senator, or another elected position. His big goal is to “join a research group, a think tank, or a university to learn more, and contribute solutions to life's problems.”

After graduating from SPSCC, Adan plans to transfer to the University of Wash-ington at Tacoma and enter into their unique major: Politics, Philosophy, and Eco-nomics. He maintains that receiving a scholarship through the SPSCC Foundation “hasn’t changed my outlook, but rather, reinforced it. I have always had a positive outlook on my own education, community, and future; this scholarship just gives

me more evidence for my current view. That is, despite negativity everywhere we look, these scholarships are glim-mers of hope. They show that there are still people that care, and those who are ripe for success–eager to advance–have donors eager to help them. It has strengthened my own will to succeed.”

STUDENT PROFILE

INSPIRED BY SPSCC Jayda Williams ‘14Jayda has always known that she has an analytical mind. She also wants to serve those around her. That’s why she worked in various clerical roles for state agencies, supporting teams and getting behind the mission of each agency. But it wasn’t until 2004, when she started in the Office of Financial Management, that Jayda found her calling in state accounting.

Jayda has worked for the State of Washington for over 15 years in various agencies and state colleges. When she decided to go back to school, she needed something that was going to be flexible and allow her to stay in her full-time job. She found evening and online classes at SPSCC critical to her completion of her AA. “I wouldn’t have been able to go to school during the day but SPSCC provided me that opportunity,” said Jayda.

“Originally, I was going for an AAS degree so I could go straight into a fiscal or accounting position with the State, but when I went through a degree audit, I realized that I was closer to completing my transfer AA.” Jayda decided to transfer her accounting credits and AA degree to Western Governors Univer-sity and start working toward a bachelor’s degree. She's currently on track to graduate in summer 2017.

DONOR PROFILE

Cindy & John HoughScholarship: Helping Hand Scholarship

My husband and I both feel this community has been good to us, and it is our obligation to give back to the community. Over the decades we have both volunteered and donated to many causes. We focus our philanthropic time and energy on organizations that will have an impact today, but that impact will also live well into the future. In other words, strengthen for the now, build for the future.

In the early 80s I was appointed to be a trustee for Community College District 12 (at that time the district consisted of Centralia College and Olympia Vocational Technical Institute-later to become South Puget Sound Community College). At the time of the appointment I knew very little about community colleges. I was instantly immersed in the business and visioning of both campuses so I quickly learned about the colleges and the role they play in their communities, but it was while shaking the hands of the graduates that I felt the impact the college has on our students. Of all the volunteering I had done before, nothing was as rewarding to me as volunteering for what is now SPSCC.

Studies, research, and data all show conclusively that the outcome of having SPSCC in our community strengthens our economy by providing trained employees and innovative entrepreneurs. Additionally, the college provides access so students can acquire the skills and knowledge they need to fulfill their career goals and build a better life for themselves.

I was fortunate enough to have been the chair of the college board when we incorporated the SPSCC Foundation and I have been on the Foundation Board since – either as a trustee representative or a community member. Speaking from close association with the Foundation, I can strongly affirm the Foundation is a good and caring steward of the donations and endowments. The mission of the Foundation is very student-focused and the relationship between the college and the Foundation is a healthy, mutually beneficial one.

Providing an annual scholarship at South Puget Sound Community College hits all the core values John and I have for our giving. I am very thankful for the opportunities I have had to be associated with the College over the last 35 years and to feel we have had some positive impact on former–and will have on future–students and their families.

Marketing Intern United Way of Pierce County

Nhan is driven, smart, and extremely likeable. He’d say that those qualities were hidden under insecurities and loneliness when he first came to the United States. The experiences and opportunities he found at SPSCC, however, allowed Nhan to embrace and reveal his true self—and now he’s making a big mark on Thurston and Pierce counties.

Nhan left his family and friends in Vietnam when was just 16 to pursue his dream of going to school in the U.S. “I started at SPSCC in 2011. I didn’t know English and I had no communication skills and no friends. There was also a cultural barrier. I didn’t feel I am valuable and I didn’t feel I’m good enough for anything.”

Nhan’s deep passion for serving the community and underrepresented populations has only sparked further since graduating SPSCC in 2014. Since transferring directly into his junior year at the University of Washington – Tacoma, Nhan has joined student leadership to represent the 600+ students in the Milgard School of Business, has worked as a Husky Mascot Coordinator, and has planned over a dozen workshops to progress social justice on campus. He’s also come back to SPSCC as a guest speaker and Marketing Intern for the Students of Color Conference. He was recently recognized as a Husky 100 at University of Washington for his oustanding engagement, character, and contribution to UW students.

On top of it all, Nhan works as the Marketing and Communication Intern at the United Way of Pierce County, where his knowledge, work ethic, and character are highly valued. When we visited him there on a brisk and sunny winter day, the entire office lit up with smiles as we photographed and interviewed their “bright star.” It was clear that his hope of combining his passion and value was already being realized right there at the United Way, serving children and families facing poverty.

Nhan earned an Associate in Business Direct Transfer Degree and will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Business Marketing in June 2017 from University of Washington – Tacoma. And he wouldn’t change a thing about starting his journey at SPSCC.
