Athletic Activities
Code of Conduct
2015 - 2016
SOHS Participant Philosophy
South Oldham High School operates its competitive athletic programs in accordance with the rules,
regulations, and policies as outlined by each group’s association, the KHSAA or the Oldham County
Board of Education, and the administrative policies of the school. Within that framework, we will
provide programs of the highest quality, that meet the needs of our students and the community.
We believe that athletic programs and other athletic activities provide a vital link between the school
and the community. Student, parental & community involvement in school sponsored activities
enhance school spirit, develop sound minds and bodies, and develop skills and qualities which endure
for life.
Due to the public visibility of the school and its representatives, it is imperative for all participants to
conduct themselves with the highest degree of integrity at all times. While students participating in
competitive athletic activities do so on a voluntary basis, it is incumbent upon them to conduct
themselves in a manner which brings credit to themselves, their organization or team, their families,
their school, and their community. Participants in competitive athletic activities are expected to give
their time, energy, and loyalty to the program. They are also expected to accept the training rules,
regulations and responsibilities which are inherent in participating in such activities. By willingly
accepting these obligations, student participants create pride in themselves, their school & their
community.
This code provides a minimum standard of conduct which must be followed by all participants.

Definitions
1). Participant/Athletic Participation Fee
A participant is defined as any Student who participates in any competitive athletic
program at South Oldham High School which is sanctioned by or recognized by the
KHSAA, SOHS or the Oldham County Board of Education. Each student athlete must pay
a one-time $75.00 participation fee each year, regardless of the number of sports they
participate in. If a family has more than one athlete then it is only $45.00 for each additional
athlete. These participation fees help to offset costs for officials, transportation, etc.
2). Competitive Athletic Activity
Competitive athletic activity means any school-sponsored athletic activity occurring beyond
the scope of the school day for which a grade is not given. This may include, but is not
limited to the following: tryouts, practices, games/contests, conditioning, and performances
affiliated with SOHS.
Competitive athletic activities offered by South Oldham High School may include, but are
not limited to the following: football, golf, volleyball, basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis,
softball, wrestling, swimming, track & field, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse,

South Oldham High School & the College Bound Student / Athlete
Many Student Athletes pass through SOHS. Many of them experience their last competitive athletic activity in high school. There
are some athletes fortunate enough to continue their participation in athletics at a college or university level. Because of their
athletic development in their particular sport, these student athletes are awarded scholarships enabling them to continue their
education as well as their competitive activity. These student athletes represent SOHS as they move on through their careers.
In order to provide the most current, up to date information to the student athletes and their families, South Oldham High School

to qualify for this approval. Exceptions may be granted by the principal on special occasions.

will require documentation and the approval of the Attendance Principal or Athletic Director.
Any unexcused absence from school on the part of a student will prevent the student from practicing
or participating in the athletic activity without prior approval on the day of the unexcused absence and
such absence from the activity shall also be unexcused.8
Concussion Management
South Oldham High School has implemented an innovative program for evaluating and treating head injuries (e.g.,
concussion). In order to better manage concussions sustained by our student-athletes, South Oldham High School has
partnered with your local healthcare organization, Baptist Hospital Northeast, the provider of our athletic training
services, to acquire a software tool called ImPACT™ (Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing).
This software system is utilized throughout professional sports and has been mandated in the NHL. Used by 31 NFL
teams and countless colleges and high schools across the country, it is fast becoming the “Gold Standard” in recognizing
and managing head injuries. Additional information about ImPACT™ can be found at www.impacttest.com.
South Oldham High School is requiring all student athletes to take the computerized exam before beginning sports
competition. This test is set up in “video-game” type format and takes about 30-35 minutes to complete. The
ImPACT™ test is a pre-season physical of the brain. It tracks information such as memory, reaction time, speed, and
concentration, but it is not an IQ test. The ImPACT™ test is non-invasive and poses no risks to your child.
We will be testing all in-coming freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors, as well as middle school students who are
participating at the high school.
Your child will be tested once prior to beginning sports competition and will be tested after a head injury, should they
sustain one. They will continue to be tested using the ImPACT™ test until their post-concussion results are within
normal ranges of their baseline test. There is no charge for this testing and your child may need to be tested more than
once.
9
Concussion Management South Oldham High School has a protocol for managing these injuries in regard to return to play (RTP). This procedure
is briefly outlined below.
All athletes who sustain head injuries are required to be evaluated and cleared by their primary care physician (PCP),
prior to being permitted to progress to activity. This includes athletes who were initially referred to the emergency
department. These athletes are also required to follow up with their PCP.
In addition to the physician exam, 2 other criteria must be met prior to clearance for return to play: (a) the athlete must
be asymptomatic (without symptoms), at rest and with exertion, and (b) the athlete’s post-injury neurocognitive testing
data must be within normal range of the athlete’s baseline neurocognitive testing data utilizing the ImPACT TM software
program for neurocognitive testing.
Athletes who have been cleared to progress to activity are progressed following a stepwise procedure, as recommended
by the Prague statement (“The Summary and Agreement Statement of the 2nd International Conference on Concussion in
Sport, Prague 2004”) and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Position Statement on Management of Sport-
Related Concussion (2004).
– Stepwise progression as described in the Prague Statement:
• No activity – do not progress to step 2 until asymptomatic (without symptoms)
• Light aerobic exercise – walking, stationary bike
• Sport-specific training (e.g., skating in hockey, running in soccer)
• Non-contact training drills
• Full-contact training after medical clearance
• Game Play
• Note: If the athlete experiences post-concussion symptoms during any phase, the athlete should drop back to the previous asymptomatic
level and resume the progression after 24 hours.
• ImPACT can help answer difficult questions about an athlete’s readiness to return to play, protecting them from
the potentially serious consequences of returning too soon. Conducting baseline and post-injury neurocognitive testing
using ImPACT helps to objectively evaluate an athlete’s cognitive status to prevent the cumulative effects of
concussion.10
Social Media and Student AthletesGuidelines for Student-Athletes: Social Media
The athletic department recognizes and supports the student-athletes’ rights to freedom of speech,
expression, and association, including the use of social networks. In this context, however, each
student-athlete must remember that playing and competing for the school is a privilege. As a
student-athlete, you represent the school and the community and you are expected to portray
yourself, your team, and the school district in a positive manner at all times.
Please review the following social networking expectations:
• Everything you post is public information – any text or photo placed online is completely out
of your control the moment it is placed online – even if you limit access to your site. Information
(including pictures, videos, and comments) may be accessible even after you remove it. Once you
post a photo or comment on a social networking site, that photo or comment becomes the property
of the site and may be searchable even after you remove it. Photographs, videos or postings that
show activities prohibited by the school’s code of conduct or the Extracurricular Code may be
used as evidence against you or other students depicted. Think before you post....How would this
look to an administrator or as a headline on the front page of a newspaper.
• 11
Social Media - Continued•
What you post may affect your future. Many employers and college admissions
officers review social networking sites as part of their overall evaluation of an
applicant. Carefully consider how you want people to perceive you before you give
them a chance to misinterpret your information (including pictures, videos,
comments, and posters).
Similar to comments made in person, the public schools department of athletics
will not tolerate disrespectful comments and behavior online, such as:
- Derogatory language or remarks that may harm teammates or coaches; other student athletes,
teachers, or coaches; and student-athletes, coaches, or representatives of other schools,
including comments that may disrespect my opponents; This will be considered un-
sportsmanship like conduct, and will be handled accordingly.
- Creating a serious danger to the safety of another person or making a credible threat of serious
physical or emotional injury to another person.
12
Misconduct
Athletic participants, SOHS parents/guardians, and/or SOHS volunteers, should never engage in any
act which may reflect negatively or may bring disrespect upon South Oldham High School. All acts of
noncompliance with school / staff rules, misuse of transportation privileges, insubordination,
disruptive behavior, vandalism, malicious mischief, lawlessness or breaking the general provisions
outlined in this Code of Conduct, Parent/Student Handbook, and/or as outlined by the coaches / sponsors,

may result in suspension or dismissal from the athletic organizitation, or other disciplinary action as
may be recommended by the coach, sponsor, or administration.

entire career at South Oldham High School. In all cases where the school district finds sufficient evidence
of an athletic participant’s possession, consumption, or distribution of alcohol, tobacco, e-cigarettes or
illegal controlled substances, including drug paraphernalia, the student will receive consequences as outlined
and defined in this Code of Conduct. Student athletes are also subject to the OCBE Random Drug

should be able to participate in competitive Athletic programs sanctioned by or recognized by the
KHSAA, SOHS, or OCBE in an environment free from any behavior that is intimidating, hostile,
humiliating, offensive, or dangerous. Any Student found in violation of this policy may face suspension

South Oldham Administration.16
Misconduct – cont.
DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES
All coaches and sponsors will monitor their individual programs and implement stated policies
with regard to this code and their specific rules and / or bylaws. Investigation of possible code / rules
violations will necessitate communication and cooperation between sponsors, coaches, the A.D. and the
principal. For violations involving athletic activities, (including Cheerleading and Dance), the AD and /or
principal should be advised or involved in any investigation. The Head Coach/Sponsor will notify
parent/guardian and athlete of a Code Violation in writing. Notification can also be an OCBE/SOHS
Disciplinary report from an SOHS Administrator.
DISCIPLINARY APPEALS & DUE PROCESS
DISCIPLINE CONSEQUENCES
When a serious rule infraction (Code, Activity, or School) occurs, the issuance of a discipline consequence
will be issued according to the appropriate Code, Activity, or School Policy, and may involve consultation
with the athletic director or principal. Coaches and sponsors are to report any serious code violation or
TEAM rule infraction along with recommended consequences, promptly to the AD or the Principal.
A student removed or suspended from an extracurricular organization, including a competitive athletic
activity, has due process rights. Students/Parents must be notified in writing by the Coach / Sponsor.
The initial appeal should be placed in writing to the attention of the Coach / Sponsor within 5 (five) school
days. The Coach / Sponsor has 5 (five) school days to respond. Appeals of a ruling should be directed to
the Athletic Director in writing. A further appeal may be directed to the School Principal. In accordance
with OCBE policy 9068, a final appeal may be made to the Superintendent only if there has been a
violation of Board (OCBE) or SBDM Policy or due process by the school administrator.
17
COACH / PARENTS / PARTICIPANTS
COMMUNICATION PROCESS
Coaches have the authority over who becomes a participant of the TEAM and when the participant plays or is
removed from the TEAM. Coaching strategy is determined by the coaching staff. Acceptance of a position on a
TEAM includes acceptance of this policy. Therefore, these issues are not appropriate topics for parent involvement
and discussions with coaches is discouraged. It is NEVER acceptable for a parent to attempt to discuss playing time
with a coach during a game or practice. It is also NEVER acceptable for a parent to attempt to discuss the
performance or playing time of another participant.
Coach, athlete, parent meetings are encouraged to resolve any OTHER issues creating concern or dissatisfaction.
Such meetings MUST be scheduled at least 24 hours following the occurrence, and must be mutually acceptable to all
parties. NO appointments will be set to occur prior to or immediately following a scheduled practice / contest.
Any and ALL discussion between a coach and a parent MUST be conducted in a calm, non-threatening manner, or the
discussion will be immediately terminated and will be continued at a scheduled meeting, at another time as mutually
agreed to by all parties.
The South Oldham Athletic experience is one that we hope provides satisfaction for all participants and their
parents / guardians. It is inevitable individuals may have questions or concerns during the course of the year.
When issues or concerns arise during the course of the athletic season, parents / guardians and student athletes
should ALWAYS consult the appropriate Coach / Sponsor as the initial step in the clarification process. In the
event the issue cannot be satisfactorily resolved at this stage, it would then be appropriate to schedule a meeting
with the Athletic Director. Once again if the issue remains unresolved, the parent / guardian should then
request an appointment with the school principal. The Process is as follows:
Scheduled Meeting with Coach / Sponsor
Scheduled Meeting with Athletic Director
Scheduled Meeting with Principal 18
COACH / Sponsor Code of Conduct
The function of a COACH is to educate students through participation in interscholastic competition. An interscholastic
program should be designed to enhance academic achievement and should never interfere with opportunities for
academic success. Each student-athlete should be treated as though he or she were the coaches’ own, and his or her
welfare should be uppermost at all times. Accordingly, the following guidelines for coaches have been adopted by the
National Federation of High Schools Coaches Association, (NFCA), Board of Directors.
The COACH shall be aware that he or she has a tremendous influence, for either good or ill, on the education of the
student-athlete and, thus, shall never place the value of winning above the value of instilling the highest ideals of
character.
The COACH shall uphold the honor and dignity of the profession. In all personal contact with student-athletes, officials,
athletic directors, school administrators, the state high school athletic association, the media, and the public, the
COACH shall strive to set an example of the highest ethical and moral conduct.
19
The COACH shall take an active role in the prevention of drug, alcohol and tobacco abuse.
The COACH shall avoid the use of alcohol and tobacco products when in contact with players.
The COACH shall promote the entire interscholastic program of the school and direct his or her program in harmony with the total
school program.
The COACH shall master the contest rules and shall teach them to his or her team members.
The COACH shall not seek an advantage by circumvention of the spirit or letter of the rules.
The COACH shall exert his or her influence to enhance sportsmanship by spectators, both directly and by working closely with
cheerleaders, pep club sponsors, booster clubs, and administrators.
The COACH shall respect and support contest officials.
The COACH shall not indulge in conduct which would incite players or spectators against the officials. Public criticism of officials or
players is unethical and will not be tolerated.
Before and after contests, COACHES for the competing teams should meet and exchange cordial greetings to set the correct tone for
the event.
A COACH shall not exert pressure on faculty members to give student-athletes special consideration.
A COACH shall not scout opponents by any means other than those adopted by the league and/or state high school athletic association.
COACH / Sponsor Code of Conduct
20
COACH / PARENTS / PARTICIPANTS
SPORTSMANSHIP
SPORTSMANSHIP:
Function: noun
1. The fact or practice of participating in sports or a sport.
2. Conduct and attitude considered as befitting participants, coaches, and fans, in sports, especially fair play, courtesy, striving
spirit, grace in losing, and humility in winning.
The ideals of good sportsmanship, ethical behavior, and integrity must permeate every aspect of interscholastic athletics at SOHS. The
ethics of fair play must be present in both perception and practice. Coaches, parents, and participants MUST realize that the behaviors and
attitudes of each individual have an impact on the behaviors and attitudes of others.
The responsibility for developing sportsmanship involves many different people. The most important of all are the parents / guardians. It
is through your actions and attitudes, athletes develop their sense of sportsmanship. In recent years, sportsmanship has been replaced
with a” winning at all cost” attitude. As a result, we at SOHS face the challenge to restore good sportsmanship to its appropriate
place in the educational experience, while maintaining competitive athletic programs.
AS OUTLINED BY THE KHSAA
The National High School Federation and your state association require officials to enforce sportsmanship rules. High school athletics
emphasize positive values. All of us have worked hard to create a sense of teamwork, respect, responsibility and perspective. We remind
you that we expect good behavior and will quickly penalize misconduct. We encourage and appreciate your help. Let the competition reflect
mutual respect among all participants and officials. The Kentucky High School Athletic Association requires officials to enforce
sportsmanship rules for athletes, coaches, and fans. We will not tolerate negative statements or actions between opposing players, especially
trash-talking, taunting or baiting of opponents. If such comments are heard, or actions seen, a penalty will be assessed immediately. We have
been instructed not to issue warnings.
21
COACH / PARENTS / PARTICIPANTSSPORTSMANSHIP
THE FUNDAMENTALS OF SPORTSMANSHIP
1. GAIN AN UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATION OF THE RULES OF THE CONTEST.
RESPECT THE GAME. LEARN THE GAME. STUDY THE GAMES HISTORY.
2. EXERCISE APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR AT ALL TIMES. BEING A SPECTATOR AT AN
ATHLETIC EVENT PROVIDES YOU WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO REVEAL YOUR
CHARACTER.
3. RECOGNIZE AND APPRECIATE SKILL AND PERFORMANCE REGARDLESS OF
AFFILIATION. ENCOURAGE AND SUPPORT THE ENTIRE TEAM, NOT JUST YOUR
SON OR DAUGHTER.
4. EXHIBIT RESPECT FOR THE CONTEST OFFICIALS.
5. RESPECT OPPONENTS AT ALL TIMES.
6. UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A RIGHT AND A PRIVILEDGE. TEACH YOUR
SON / DAUGHTER THE DIFFERENCE. PURCHASING A TICKET DOES NOT CONSTITUTE
A RIGHT TO UTILIZE POOR BEHAVIORAL CHOICES.
7. ACCEPT THAT YOU CANNOT CHANGE WHAT YOU DID YESTERDAY, BUT YOU CAN CHANGE
WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO TODAY.
8. TEACH YOUR SON / DAUGHTER HUMILITY. THE SPOTLIGHT IS NEVER TO SMALL
TO SHARE.
PLEASE KNOW IT IS THE RIGHT OF THE ADMINISTRATION, CONTEST OFFICIALS, AND/OR COACHES TO HAVE
UNRULY SPECTATORS REMOVED FROM THE CONTEST SITE/SCHOOL PREMISES! 22
