A Note from the Producer & Artistic directorDo you see it? Do you feel it?  We’re growing! We’re growing!!  We’re growing!!!

Reporting growth to our patrons, board and community is one of the most exciting things a Producer ever gets to do…..and last season was extraordinary!!!  We can report that South of Broadway Theatre Company had an increase of 53% in attendance during our 2013-2014 Season.

This is the kind of growth we need if we are to achieve our vision to become South Carolina’s first “LORT” theatre. As our Artistic Director, Mark Gorman, so elegantly discussed in the 2013-2014 season guide:  “…..being a member of LORT opens Charleston to nationally negotiated contracts with actors, directors, choreographers and scenic artists….recognition by national publications and a wider reach for funding… known actors can be enticed to appear on a Charleston stage along with local actors…we would be in a position to provide local actors, writers, directors and scenic designers an avenue to shine in the national spotlight.   Most importantly we can extend our already strong reach into the community and provide many more educational and outreach programs.”

South of Broadway Theatre Company was founded with this vision, and although it has been nearly impossible during some years to not ‘cave’ under pressure, we have, in fact, never veered from this course.  Nor will we. Thanks to you, our patrons, donors, SOBTC Staff and Board of Directors for bringing us that much closer. We can’t wait to see the successes our exciting new season brings!

Welcome and thank you for spending a few hours with us. As Artistic Director, I look for ways that South of Broadway (SOBTC) can continue to grow and present theater of the highest standards. One way we do that is to constantly challenge ourselves, and our 11th season, is our most exciting yet. We bring you a show unlike any we’ve attempted before in The Nance. The play is full of original music composed specially for our regional premier. Our second show is the Pulitzer Prize winning play Fences, by one of America’s foremost visionary voices, August Wilson. We also continue our commitment to bringing you classical Irish fare that has become a highlight of Park Circle’s St. Patrick’s Festivities.

On a personal note, I am extremely excited to bring you an original play this year! Since arriving in Charleston nearly 7 years ago, it has been a dream of mine to develop new material. During my 16 years in New York, I worked with many writers and saw a number of plays go from the original words on the page, to workshop, to full blown productions, several of which appeared Off Broadway.

Mary and I first started working together as co-producers on the original play, Season to Season. Shortly after, we joined forces and made a commitment to bring new works to the stage. Second Sundays at Seven, a workshop that brings writers and actors together in an evening of exploration, was born. From that workshop a new play, being written by Erin Danly under South of Broadway guidance will sprout its wings, and with your help we can make the play soar. While most theaters are content to bring you the shows that were on Broadway yesterday, it is our goal and passion to bring you the shows that will be on Broadway tomorrow.

The summey barkley rucker medallIoNA perpetual award to celebrate “Mentoring Young Artists” was created in 2011 by SOBTC. The inaugural recipient was Anita Zucker, Philanthropist and CEO of The InterTech Group. The 2012 recipient was local education and political icon, Lonnie hamilton III. Most recently comedian and icon, Bill Cosby, accepted the award in Charleston.

secoNd suNdays aT seveN & PlayFesT PlayFest is a weekend celebration of new plays, the culmination of the playwrights’ work who participate in Second Sundays at Seven. This unique monthly playwrights’ workshop is free and encourages actors and writers to work together in a dynamic partnership, which takes the play writing process to a whole new level.

NexT sTageIn its second year, Flowertown Players community and SOBTC’s professionals come together in this innovative opportunity to witness the same show in two vastly different environments. This year see Oleanna, the “Show” at FTP in a 199 seat proscenium theatre, have the “experience” at SOBTC 68 intimate seats in the round (audience on all 4 sides of the actors.) hoW You cAN helP shAre the Arts share The arTs “my Ticket to the arts”

This initiative was launched in 2012, where tickets were distributed to at-risk and underserved populations in the tri-county area. Distribution is provided through Communities in Schools, Engaging Creative Minds and the Literacy Round Table.

The objective of this program is to energize the population to reach beyond the experiences of their daily lives, to inspire them to broaden the horizons of their perceived individual potential, and to challenge their creativity and intellects. Since 2012, over 3,000 tickets have been given. This year we continue, and seek community support of this endeavor.

mArY GouldSouth of Broadway Theater Company Founder and Producer was raised in Brazil from the age of

three. At the age of 18 she returned to this country to pursue a career in Opera. Following the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, she studied with internationally famous Baritone, Tito Gobbi, at Rosary College’s School of Graduate Studies in Florence, Italy.

Back in Chicago, she collaborated with hinsdale Opera Theater to produce an arts education outreach program targeting grades 10 – 12 of the Greater Chicago School System. A finalist in the New York Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions while living in Chicago, she then moved to New York, making it her home base from 1983 to 1995.

During that time, she toured England and appeared at Scotland’s Edinburgh Festival as La Carlotta in The Phantom of the Opera. She produced and performed a one-woman show celebrating cultural diversity for ITT Sheraton’s International Executive’s Performance Series, traveling to both Rio and Sao Paulo, Brazil. She also created and performed a one-woman arts education show called Operatunities: Mozart to Menotti! for Kennedy Center’s Imagination Celebration Festival.

In 1997, taking time off from performing, Mary accepted the Executive Directorship of The New York virtuosi Chamber Symphony (a union orchestra presenting in Manhattan, New York). During her year-long tenure as Executive Director, the orchestra garnered its first Manhattan press review and established a prestigious residency at hunter College’s The Sylvia and Danny Kaye Playhouse, 69th Street and Park Avenue.

having commuted regularly for a year between Manhattan, New York and Charleston, South Carolina, where her husband relocated in 1997, Mary resigned her Executive Directorship and established a vocal studio in downtown Charleston. In 1999, Mary expanded her portfolio of activities by producing a series of intensive seminars Road to Broadway, Broadway Getting the Job, and I’m Getting My Act Together, drawing not only on her own diverse experience, but on the extensive expertise of an impressive list of working theater colleagues from Los Angeles and New York.

In January of 2000, Mary launched her own production company, Marigold Arts Development (MAD) to provide performing opportunities for young Charleston artists and formed its professional theatre arm, South of Broadway Theatre Company, with the objective of “bridging the gap between community theatre, national, and international tours” by bringing a permanent resident professional theatre to Charleston and the state of South Carolina.

mArk GormANArtistic Director of South of Broadway Theater Company and is the President of The League of

Charleston Theaters. he relocated to Charleston in 2007. Since arriving, he has appeared in over a dozen plays in and around the city. Mark has directed dozens of plays at several venues. he held the position of Production Manager for four years with Charleston International Film Festival. he was the primary artistic visionary for two years with the Edgar Allen Poe “Back From the Grave” event at Fort Moultrie. Mark currently teaches Acting at SOBTC and Trident Technical College.

Mark is a graduate of Radford university with a BFA in Acting and also a graduate of The National Theatre Institute. Mark spent nearly 16 years in New York City. While in New York, he acted in dozens of plays with companies such as Signature Theater Company, Circle Repertory Company, and many others. Mark acted in multiple productions under the leadership of Broadway Directors Terry Schreiber, Jacques Levy and Michael Kahn. Mark also acted with a troupe that worked with professional athletes to train them to face life situations.

While in NY, Mark also worked in multiple capacities behind the scenes. he produced and directed several plays. he held the position of Technical Director at the T.Schreiber Studios, where he worked closely with and built several sets designed by Broadway Designer, hal Tine. Mark spent six seasons as the assistant production manager with JKLD during the famous New York Fashion Week. JKLD was the lighting design company in charge of the lighting design for New York’s “Fashion Week” both under the tents at 42nd St. and at several venues outside of the tents including shows for Sean Jean, Donna Karan, hugo Boss, Marc Jacobs and Narciso Rodriguez. Mark worked on crews at theaters such as Roundabout Theater, Edison Theater, The Public Theater and Shakespeare in the Park as well as many more.
