As onemight expect, it was difficultforAndover senior forwardWillNeff todigestWednesday’s season-ending defeatinAuburnHills.Playing in theDivision 2 boys soccer

state semifinal game for the first time inschool history, theBarons could not sur-vive a staggering second-half onslaughtby hostAvondale and suffered a heart-breaking 2-1 loss. The stinging setback brought a pain-

ful halt to a thrilling state-tournament runthat fell just one victory short of playingfor the first state boys soccer champion-ship in programhistory.Andover had never beforewon a dis-

trict title in the 30 years that theMichi-ganHigh SchoolAthleticAssociation hassponsored the popular post-season tour-nament.However, posting that first district title,

the first regional crown and advancing tothe Final Four for the first time everwasthe furthest thing fromNeff’smind as thefinal horn signaled the end to amarvelousseason and stellar prep career.

Overcoming adversityNeff,who overcame some toughknee

injuries to leadAndover’s exciting post-season run, nonetheless attempted to putthememorable fall in perspective.“Itwas a great senior season.Wehad 12

seniors on the teamand I’m really proudof the guys this year,” saidNeff, a four-year varsity playerwho served as a teamcaptain the past two years. “We’ve been inand out of injuries all year and I feel like

wenever had a full teamuntil the play-offs.“Wegot our roster back healthy at the

right time, and I couldn’t be prouderbecausewe left it all out on the field. It’sbeen a really satisfying season. You can’ttake away the opportunity you have infront of you.“It’s never easy to lose, but I’m really

proud of the guys thatwegot this far,” hesaid. “You can’t point your finger at any-one.Wewin as a teamandwe lose as ateam. And, I thinkwehandled itwell.”Neff nettedAndover’s lone goal against

Avondale.Just 10minutes into the game,Neff

used his size and strength to outmusclehis defender and set up his scoring oppor-tunity. Once he found some free space,Neff booted the ball along the ground andinto the far side of the net pastAvondalegoalieBenRichter.

A ‘wonderful’ leaderItwasAndover’s first shot on goal and

first good scoring opportunity of thegame.Neff didn’tmiss it as he registeredhis team-leading 15th goal of the sea-son.Neff scored in every playoff gameand finishedwith 19 points on the season

counting his four assists.“Will is a terrific youngman,” said

Andover assistant coachAaron Seaton,a 1998Andover grad and formerBaronssoccer captain. “Hewas one of our threecaptainswho showed leadership through-out the year.“He’s had to battle injuries his entire

career.Hemissed all of his sophomoreseason and battled a lot of adversity. He’sshowed a lot ofwill withwhat he’s gonethrough.“And I think the teampicked up emo-

tionally fromwhat he’s been through overthe years,” said Seaton. “The team fed offthat.Hewas awonderful leader for usboth on and off the field.”

An outstanding seasonAndover finished its outstanding sea-

sonwith a 13-7-3 overall record. TheBar-ons tied for second—withAvondale— intheOaklandActivitiesAssociationWhiteDivisions standings behind championFarmington.TheBarons playedwithout a few

banged-up starters and dropped theirfinal two games of the regular season toAvondale andBloomfieldHills CranbrookKingswood.

However, withmany of those playersreturning for the playoffs, theBaronswon five straight games before falling toAvondale.Andover posted its district titlewith

wins over SouthLyonEast, RedfordUnion andCranbrookKingswood. In theregional, theBarons did not allow agoalin defeatingTrenton and St. Clair ShoresLake Shore. That set up their rubber-matchwith

Avondale— the teams split their two reg-ular-season games— in the semifinals.Although it didn’t go theirway in the

end, veteran head coachGeoff Parkinsonwas satisfiedwith his team’s season over-all.“In 1978 the schoolwon a state title (in

the old coaches association sponsorshipprior to theMHSAA takeover), but it’scertainly a lot harder to get this far now-adays,” said Parkinson. “There’s a lot ofparity and there are a lot of great teamsout there.“We always felt likewe could have been

here before ifweweren’t always in oneof themost difficult districts in the state. And I think this year proved it. Oncewegot out of our districtwemade a nicerun.”
