Viva La Fiesta at Oakham School

This photo is taken in the historical Oakham castle where the children rehearsed for Viva La Fiesta, organised by Oakham School, a wonderful day of Latin American Music.

Mrs Winton Mills and a selection of Yr. 6 and 7 musicians

set off early on Tuesday for the beautiful drive to Oakham and

an exciting day of Latin American music-making. After three

workshop sessions our singers joined forces with the brass and

percussion sections to give a lively concert in the lovely

setting of Oakham School chapel. The hard work paid off and

the vibrant music was a joy to be part of.

Oakham School made us extremely welcome, fed us a

gorgeous lunch and packed us off home with a goodie bag for

everyone.

Mrs Winton Mills has written to Oakham’s Director of Music

to thank him for a superb day.

VOCES8 AT THE LEYS SCHOOL

Wednesday afternoon and more

musicians were on the road – this time heading to Cambridge and a

day of choral workshops with an

internationally acclaimed group of young classical singers, Voces8. It’s

safe to say that South Lee children

have never experienced such perfect

singing and the experience left many of them hovering a few feet above the ground!

The children worked on some

improvised pieces and also a

beautiful African lullaby, learning

from Voces8 during the day. The concert included a full programme

from the professionals which was

extraordinarily varied and served as a masterclass for the children.

What an amazing opportunity this

was, as was being interviewed for Cambridge Community Radio!

Mrs Winton Mills had special

permission to take some younger pupils to this senior school event

and was delighted to receive

compliments from many people on the children’s singing and their

wonderful behaviour. Well done all

and a huge thank you to The Leys for a truly memorable occasion.

On Friday our U13 girls’ hockey team took part in the

IAPS Regional Qualifiers at Orwell Park.

Despite playing against some very tough opposition, the

team battled well and improved throughout the

competition.

Unfortunately we did not qualify for the National Finals,

but in the subsequent plate competition the girls played

really nice hockey in their final match of the day, beating

OBH 2-1. We therefore completed our day finishing

runners-up in the plate.

Well done to the team for showing great spirit and

determination. Together, with positive captaincy from

Emma Boyle, the team can look back on the day as a

great experience.

Congratulations to Arthur Cornish, Otto Wigdahl,

Katie Rogers and Emma Boyle who have been named

in the Suffolk U13 Hockey squad for this season. A

super achievement.

Well done to Gabriel Foster on his

recent karate success. He attained 4th kyu, purple 1-stripe belt, after a tough grading exam at Kenshinkai karate club in Barrow. Gabriel started when he was 5 years old!

Henrietta Croot, Lily Godfrey and Ollie

Knight all had success in the Under 9 Orange

Ball Tournament at Easton College on

Saturday.

Ollie & Henrietta both won gold medals in

their different leagues, both played for Culford

Tennis Centre and Lily won silver for Titan

Tennis playing for their A Team.

OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE OUTDOOR CLASSROOM

Guest speaker Mell Harrison, Forest School and Education

Special thanks to Jon Boreham and Paul Meekings for working so hard to get

YEAR 7 & 8 GEOGRAPHY TRIP!

The year 7 and 8 children undertook fieldwork on the

River Glaven near Holt.

This day began with an introductory talk at Gresham's

School followed by the children undertaking fieldwork at

three sites between the source and the mouth of the river.

The children used various geographical equipment to

gather data on the river. This data will now be analyzed in

the classroom. Thanks goes to Mr. Dominic Atkinson

from Gresham's School for his support in organising this

wonderful day out.

Y5 BOTANIC GARDENS TRIP

This week the Year 5s were in Cambridge at the

Botanic Gardens on a History and Maths Day. In

the morning we were told about the Victorian

Plant Hunters and their love of collecting plants

from distant countries. We visited the glass houses

to look at some examples and made a Wardian

Case, a replica of the containers used to transport

the plants back home.

After a picnic lunch, we spent a mathematical

afternoon looking at and then drawing the

symmetry in plants and measuring a giant redwood

using a tape measure and a clinometer.

We had a busy and enjoyable day and were so

lucky with the weather.
