Reading Tasks

1. The aim of this is to read the text and find fronted adverbial phrases, as well as some powerful adverbs. Snowy Mountains

2. Using the book that you are currently reading, you must make up at least 4 questions using VIPERS. Find any two pages of your book to use, to write some questions. You then need to answer your own questions, in full sentences.

‘The Laughter Forecast’ by Sue Cowling

Sue Cowling’s poem looks at all the ways of expressing happiness in this alternative weather forecast.

The Laughter Forecast

Today will be humorous

With some giggly patches,

Scattered outbreaks of chuckling in the south

And smiles spreading from the east later,

Widespread chortling

Increasing to gale-force guffaws towards evening.

The outlook for tomorrow

Is hysterical.

a) Provide a synonym for the word 'humorous'.

b) In line three it states, 'Scattered outbreaks of chuckling in the south' if this was a real weather report what do you think the line would be?

c) Look up these words and give definitions for them: chortling, guffaws and hysterical.

d) Complete the poem with a different (weather-related) ending, The outlook for tomorrow is __________________________.

4. Choose a page in your reading book and find examples of the following:

a) An adjective.

b) An adverb.

c) A noun.

d) A verb.

e) Now, using any of the above to help you, write a simile to describe a character in the book.

Writing Tasks

1. Writing a dialogue for a radio advert:

An advertisement can take the form of a TV advert, a radio voice over advert, an online advert that you see pop onto your screen when you are on google. Can you think of any others? It shares product information with the listener, or reader.

The most important part of any advertisement is that it makes the viewer or reader remember the item. This is often done by using slogans. For example, KFC’s slogan is ‘finger licking good’.

Choose any one of the images below, write a dialogue between two characters for a radio advert on the product of your choice. Be sure to include some amazing adjectives, fronted adverbials, onomatopoeia and similes. You must give the product a name and include a slogan.

It can be located in any country and can include any main attractions that you wish. You must divide it into paragraphs, with subheadings. You must use formal and persuasive language and write in third person. You can include images too.

3. Write a description on the image below.Be sure to include fronted adverbials, expanded noun phrases, connective words and follow your non-negotiables. Challenge: Include an onomatopoeia and personification in your writing. You should write two paragraphs.

4. Write a short story on the Wolf in the image below. Describe how he came to be in the forest with this very funny look on his face.

You must use paragraphs, and organise your ideas in to a clear beginning, middle and end.
