PRESIDENT’S CORNER / BRENT BELL

Happy September! If you are a fan of autumn, Indiana is a great place to be. The fall colors are amazing over Morse Lake and in the Indiana Parks. Our neighborhoods trees are put on display in the fall. If you have a favorite fall picture, post in on social media or on google.com. Feel free to post them to our web site as well (www.southharbour.org).

This is the third month in a row I would like to write about our survey results. Last month I wrote about our grounds area. This was the highest area of focus when you answered the second question of the survey, “What area of focus would you like SHPOA address in 2015?” I would like to thank the volunteers that have stepped up to help get some of the grounds Improvement projects started.

After grounds improvements, this year, there were two areas tied for second place with 25% of the responses wanting us to focus on these two areas. The two areas were the Pool and Developmental Control. I would like to write about the pool this month. Since the summer is ending, I feel it is timely to discuss what worked and needs improvement because we just finished using it for the summer. Also, the pool is an area where we need to have a 2-5 year plan because of the cost of some of the improvement ideas. From an

operations perspective, our goal is to have the pool open as many days in the summer as possible. We try to limit the number of days of unplanned closers and we have been able to accomplish this by having a knowledgeable pool director and leveraging pool service organizations. The cost of running the pool is the single largest expense we have in our SHPOA. The board of directors looked at

different ways to manage the pool and found the current approach to be the most cost effective and efficient.

We continue to look at ways to have the pool open longer hours and more days in the year. In order to do this we would need to modify the access and pool design. Our current pool design requires life guards, and it is difficult to staff after school starts up in the fall. With the balanced calendar, this really cuts into the summer months. If you have any ideas to keep the pool open longer hours and more days in the summer, please send an email to [email protected] and [email protected].

There were many great ideas in the survey. I’d like to break them up in two groups. The first listed are ideas that can be accomplished in the short term. The second listed are ideas that are 2-5 year projects.

Here are ideas that can be accomplished in the short term:1) Trash picked up better by patrons 2) Trash cans that blend in with pool décor.3) Better speakers4) Pool chairs (more seating)5) More tables/umbrellas, flowers6) Shower at entrance needs to be in working order at all times7) More shade areas for the deck8) Better WIFI coverage – (more than just office hours and repeater coverage at the pool)

Here are ideas that can be accomplished with a 2-5 year project:1) Nicer and updated fencing2) larger patio area3) New kids pool/ splash zone4) Pool edges5) Have it open later in year with a coded lock & no lifeguards 6) hot tub (indoor & outdoor)7) Lap pool/adult swimmers with no guards needed8) Make the pool and/or decking larger9) Keep it open later in summer - until labor day

Overall, I hope you see we are taking your feedback to set our priories for our pool. For example this year we purchased more chairs and loungers for the pool deck. We also purchased a large umbrella to increase the shade areas. Flowers were also planted to help beautify the area.

Lastly, I’d encourage you to read the great news we have received from the City of Noblesville Planning & Engineering Department. Yes, our sidewalks are going to be worked on this fall. We are posting the letter and pictures we sent into the City of Noblesville last year which helped get this accomplished. Please login to our web site at www.southharbour.org to see it. I think it is a great model to use in the future. Have a great month of September and enjoy the fall colors!

From the Office Manager / Cindi Sparenblek

This is a beautiful time of year for South Harbour with all the changing tree leaves.

Just a few things to know about leaf pickup: Loose leaf pickup will begin October 5th thru the end of the season. The Street Department of Noblesville prefers residents to use the leaf bags and put them out on trash pickup day. They will be picked up each time.

If you have any questions, you can call the Street Department at 317-776-6348.

FROM GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS – LEAH HESTONSouth Harbour Sidewalk Repair – GREAT NEWS!! The City of Noblesville was able to achieve some savings on other projects, which will enable them to repair all the South Harbour sidewalk panels that need replacement. A contractor has already been awarded the project and is hoping to begin work in late August or early September. Please be on the lookout for work areas and wet cement.

Hawthorn Place Street Sign – The Board apologizes for the delay in replacing the damaged Street sign on Hawthorn Place. We have been corresponding with the City Engineering Department to obtain a permit that will enable us to put the sign on the North side entrance, where it will be seen. There are some zoning issues and we hope to have a resolution soon. Thank you to all residents on Hawthorn and Lilac for their patience and understanding. We will have a new sign in place very soon!
