BASKETBALL SEATING

The varsity boys’ and girls’ basketball season is here! We are all excited to attend the games and cheer the Hawks on to a lot of victories. The section for the K-6 grade students is the northwest corner of the gym on the balcony level. Students will not be required to sit in this section during home wrestling meets.

TEACHER WEBSITES Teachers in the elementary are posting daily assignments and homework for their classes on their teacher websites. Parents can access the site to find out what assignments their children have by following these steps:

1. Go to the South Hamilton School website-

www.shhawks.net2. Under the STAFF DIRECTORY menu ,

Search for your student’s teacher.3. Choose your child’s teacher and click

their website link.If your child has more than one teacher go back to the STAFF DIRECTORY page and repeat steps 2-3.

THE LORD’S CUPBOARD

The Lord’s Cupboard is the South Hamilton area emergency food pantry. During the month of De-cember the students and staff at the elementary col-lect items for the Lord’s Cupboard. They rely solely on donations from citizens and businesses. They are in need of all types of non-perishable foods and per-sonal care items.

WINTER WEARSoon, snow will be covering our playground at the elementary. As a rule, all students are required to wear boots outside for recess after the first snow. It is also important for students to have something to wear on their heads and hands. These items all help make recess more enjoyable for the students.

BOOK FAIRWe would like to extend a big THANK YOU to all the students, parents, and community members who helped make the fall elementary school Scholastic Book Fair a success. Through your generous purchases, we were able to select many new books for the library. We hope you enjoy the new books in your home libraries as much as the students enjoy the new books in the elementary library. The support from the surrounding communities is very much appreciated!Kathy Houck, Teacher Librarian Kellie Detrick, Book Sale Chairperson & Elementary Library Assistant

WINTER RECESSA reminder that students in the elementary must have a physician’s note

to stay in from recess anytime due to health con-cerns. Mr. Hemphill watches the wind chill via our own KCCI school-net site and we are very conservative in our parameters compared to what other districts do. Anytime we can get the students moving around outside away from all the closed-in conditions of the classroom is great during cold and flu season!

THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC GIANT TRAVELING MAP OF IOWA visited South Hamilton Elementary in November. Students practiced their map skills and participated in various map activities, including “Where are you in Iowa?”, “Iowa Agriculture”, “Land Between Two Rivers”, “Product and Place”, “Simon Says”, “Distance Between Two Cities” and “Rocks and Minerals”. Thank you Geo-graphic Alliance of Iowa for this wonderful learning opportunity!

SOUTH HAMILTON SCHOOL DISTRICT FOUNDATION NEWSDuring the school year the South Hamilton School District Foundation has meet and approved Mini-Grant applications for Lance Keller’s marketing class to attend an Iowa Wild Game and Matt Schutt’s TAG class to purchase 3D Doodler Pens. Mr. Keller’s students observed examples they have read in their marketing books and witnessed them in real life. The following are statements from the marketing students and pictures from their field trip.

The South Hamilton Sports & Entertainment class would like to thank the Foundation for the tickets to the Iowa Wild game on November 8th. The class enjoyed the day and he education opportunity received was second to none. I obviously enjoyed seeing my class have fun, but I also believe they got a lot from the tour of Wells Far-go and the Q&A session with Allan Harris (Wells Fargo Marketing). It was nice to see examples we’ve read in our book and witness them in real life. The following are statements from the class on what they took from the day.

Attending the Iowa Wild game was a really fun experience. I learned about how many things are really promot-ed during a sporting event. There were advertisements on every single thing there, including the ice shovels. Getting the opportunity to go behind the scenes before the game actually started, seeing the locker rooms, and sitting on the bench was a great experience also. It was interesting to learn how much the Iowa Wild team and the Iowa Cubs work together when it comes to their season ticket holders. Overall, I enjoyed my time there and the way they treated every customer and fan, the environment itself makes me want to come back!Cierra Brinkmeyer, Senior

“On our trip to Wells Fargo arena, we had quite the experience. Not only did we get to watch an intense hockey game and ride on a zamboni, we also learned more about their marketing plan. During our tour we asked about areas the Wild’s advertisers and their main ways to spread word about their games. They showed us their special for businesses, and how the IA Cubs help them out in a nice business exchange. We had the chance to shake hands with the head coach of the wild, go through the locker room, and even sit on the bench pregame. Overall, this was one of my favorite field trips ever and I’m grateful for the experience!”Austin Busch, Freshman

“While I was at the Iowa Wild Hockey Game, I personal-ly liked hearing from one of their own marketers on how they get out to their fans. Before going that day, I thought that the marketers for Iowa Wild would only focus on everybody together, trying to reach out to them. Instead, they have different groups of marketers that go towards different groups of fans such as season ticket holders, first time fans, and business. I also really liked being able to sit on the bench during pre-game, seeing the locker rooms, riding the Zamboni between the second and third periods, and being on the jumbotron.” Jessica Woodall, Sophomore

What I feel was the most invaluable on this trip was witnessing the in-game operations. Allan Harris works for the Wild and students were able to get a first-hand look at what his job entails. It was also kids’ day at the arena

which was a big promotion to bring in area grade school students. The next day our marketing class talked about the promotion strategy and came to the conclusion that the kid’s promotion helped create life-long fans at a young age. The day was exciting and educational, and our class is better after going.

The student’s in Mr. Schutt’s Talented And Gifted classes have been making good use of 3D Doodle Pens that were purchased. The capability to write/draw/construct in 3D has given them a new technology perspective to use as they problem solve and create.

South Hamilton 6th and 7th Grade students recently participated on November 1 and 2 in the “Ready, Set, Build” bridge competition at the Des Moines Science Center. The teams practiced during their TAG time in October in preparation for the event. The teams had a mission of exact specifications to create a bridge using limited tools, dowels and popsicle sticks. They also had 2 ½ hours to complete the challenge.

The contest was adjudicated by the Iowa Department of Transportation and engineering students from Iowa State University. Students and their bridges were evaluated with prizes going to those with; highest structural ef-ficiency, most innovative and the truss teamwork award. Competing against students from all over central Iowa, South Hamilton received the following awards: Continued on next page...

South Hamilton Community Schools Severe Weather Procedures

Mr. Howard

Snow, ice, and cold temperatures are right around the corner – we do live n Iowa - which could potentially alter school schedules with delayed start times, early dismissals, or school closings.

Many factors are taken into consideration when a change in the school schedule may need to take place, but our first priority will always be the safety of our students and staff. Transportation Director Gene Greenfield and I will check road conditions beginning as early as 5:00 a.m. Multiple sources – Iowa/Hamilton County D.O.T. connections, other area school district leaders, and sophisticated forecasting/radar technology - will be used to determine if weather conditions are or will be safe enough to hold school. Weather conditions can vary and/or change quickly throughout our 200+ square mile district, so please keep this in mind.

Any decision to change the school schedule due to inclement weather will be made as early as possible. When it is necessary to cancel school or delay the start of the school day, media outlets will be directly contacted. Once a decision has been made to delay, dismiss early or cancel school, the following radio and television stations will be contacted:

Radio: WHO (1040 AM), TV: WHO (Channel 13), KJYL (100.7 FM), KCCI (Channel 8) KQWC (1570 AM, 95.7 FM) WOI (Channel 5)

When school is delayed, it is important for one to continue listening/watching the above media sources for any further updates. Announcements will also be posted on the school website: www.s-hamilton.k12.ia.us and sent out via Infinite Campus. Parents: If you have not yet registered for your parent portal account, please do so before winter weather settles in. This is important, as the school district will utilize the Messenger feature to send out text messages and emails regarding weather announcements. If you have any questions about your parent portal account, please contact the school.

Parents are encouraged to review any plans they have established with their children as to where their child is to go in the event of an early school dismissal. Please make sure your child and anyone providing after-school childcare services are aware of these plans. In addition, please make sure your child’s school has your current emergency contact information.

Severe weather may affect school bus service. Hazardous road conditions or temporarily closed roads may make it difficult, if not impossible, for the buses to pick-up and/or drop-off students at their regular bus stops so parents/guardians may be asked to meet buses at designated pick-up points. Routes and assignments will be handed out to bus riders as needed. If you have any questions about your alternate route assignment, please call the bus barn at 515-827-5658. The same notification process noted above will be used if it is necessary to use alternate bus routes.

A school patron once asked me, “How do you decide if school should be held on questionable weather days?” My reply was, “If I would not be comfortable with my own 16 or 17 year old son or daughter driving to school…then I do not care to have someone else’s child make that same drive…because I know there will be a 16 or 17 year old student that will have to drive if classes are held.”
