A trip to the first capital of pagan Lithuania, Kernavė – the cultural reserve – the archaeological site protected by UNESCO (the 9th–8th century BC / the 4th-5th century AD). On your way – in Sudervė – you will see an interesting classical rotund Church of the Holy Trinity, which has exceptionally fine acoustics, and beautiful murals and bas-relief Stations of the Cross. Further on, next to Lake Vilnoja, there is Vilnoja Sculpture Park. On the way to Kernavė, there are cognitive routes of the Neris Regional Park: an original natural path through Dūkštos oak wood, on the other side of the path, near the Dūkštos you will see Bradeliškės and Karmazinai hill forts, impressive exposures, the remnants of ancient Lithuanian settlements. Kernavė is one of the symbols of the Lithuanian statehood and the most beautiful Lithuanian landscape with four magnificent hill forts situated in the Neris River valley. You will find a neo-gothic style church in Musninkai (the 19th century). In Šešuolėliai, there is an estate and a landscape park. Near Vilnius, in a nice area of nature, an original Europos Parkas in which modern sculptures are displayed is established. On the way to the city you can visit the ensemble of Verkiai manor houses. Itinerary No 2 Across the Medininkai Upland Southeast of Vilnius the surface becomes higher, the Medininkai Upland starts – the highest summit in Lithuania. About 23.5 kilometres from the capital and more than 4 kilometres from the Belarus border there lie the highest hills of the country – the formation of the last but one icing. These are Aukštojas Hill (293.8 m) and somewhat lower Juozapinė Hill (293.4 m). A kilometre further, on the highway Vilnius–Minskas, you will find the remnants of Medininkai castle. This is the oldest castle in Lithuania of a grated type (the 16th century). The extant sections of the walls with tower remnants and moats with ramparts give a good idea of the defence architecture of Lithuania in the Middle Ages. In the southeast of the region, in Šalčininkai district, as if a small appendix, there is a small Lithuania island inserted in the territory of the Republic of Belarus – Dieveniškės. Due to a unique and interesting ethno-cultural heritage of the country Dieveniškės environs are declared a historical regional park. The Lithuanianism has always flourished there. This determined the fact that this part of the country remained in the territory of Lithuania after the Second World War, when Lithuania’s borders were re-divided. When going to Dieveniškės (the border zone) one has to have personal identification documents. You can see the surviving old linear villages, interesting old farmsteads, mythological rocks, hill forts, and burrow cemeteries there. Old crafts have been cherished there since olden times: weaving and woodcarving. Right on the border with Belarus, in the former neglected monastery, the romantic Norviliškės castle has been rebuilt and a hotel has been established. The town of Dieveniškės is an urban monument. The Dieveniškės Regional Park boasts of a beautiful landscape, unspoilt nature. Cognitive routes on bicycles, on foot, by motor cars. The Dieviniškės Regional Park Visitor Centre is located in Poškonys. Itinerary No 3 The Old Capital of Trakai Itinerary No 3 The Old Capital of Trakai and South-eastern Lake Districts and South-eastern Lake Districts The town of Lentvaris is founded on the way to the old capital of Lithuania – Trakai. In Lentvaris, there is one of the most beautiful and expressive neo-gothic buildings of the 19th century – Lentvaris Manor House (the end of 19th century) surrounded by the landscape park designed by the French landscape architect François Edouard André. Every visitor tries to see Trakai, the old capital of Lithuania, with its impressive insular castle. This is a historical site of Lithuania abounding in historical and cultural monuments: the insular castle (museum), the peninsular castle, the Old Town of Trakai, Užutrakis estate (the 16th-20th century) and the park, churches, the Karaim heritage, hill forts, and magnificent nature of the environs. The Trakai Historical National Park has been established there. The territory of the park covers 32 lakes with islands, forests with rare fauna and flora, and magnificent hilly landscapes. There are excellent conditions for recreation, travelling on bicycles and by boats, or indulging in entertainment. When going from Trakai in the direction of Birštonas and Jieznas, you will visit Aukštadvaris Lake District (77 lakes), the picturesque valleys of the Strėva and Verknė Rivers. The Aukštadvaris Regional Park has been established there. Itinerary No 4 Druskininkai Resort and the Dzūkija National Park Druskininkai, the largest balneological health resort in Lithuania located in the very south of the country, not far from the border with Belarus, on the Nemunas, is famous for its mineral springs and healing mud, fresh pine forest air, magnificent nature, and cosiness. Wellness, rest and entertainment infrastructure is being rapidly developed. A new modern water park with a complex of 18 bathhouses, the largest in the Baltic States, has been built. Surviving sculptures of Communist ideologues Lenin and Marx and other Soviet functionaries in Lithuania, as well as allegorical artworks, which transmit the notions of Soviet ideology, are exhibited under the open sky in the original Grūtas Park. From Druskininkai you can go to a beautiful place –Liškiava (reach it by boat in summer). An impressive baroque ensemble of a church and a monastery (the 18th century) stands on the bank of the Nemunas River. The inside has retained a valuable rococo interior: seven altars, a wonder-working picture of the Mother of God, and a museum. Next to it there is a hill fort and the remnants of an old castle. The town of Merkinė – a historical site – is situated on the confluence of the Nemunas and Merkys. An impressive panorama of the confluence of the two rivers opens from Merkinė hill fort. Perloja is an old settlement on the Merkys River, with the monument to Vytautas the Great in the centre (1930) that has survived the soviet times. In 1918–1919, an independent Republic of Perloja was established. Going from the Nemunas Valley east you will find yourself in a huge massif of forests – Dainava Wood (covering 135,000 ha). This is Dzūkija National Park. Pine forests occupy the largest part of the park. The park has two rivers Merkys and Ūla, which are especially picturesque and popular with the lovers of water sports. Sandy slopes and valleys of the rivers abound in many rare species of plants. Reserves and strict nature reserves occupy almost half the territory of the park. The park is home for more than 80 settlements, unique old linear village are of great interest. You will find old wooden architecture and original traditions there. Many cycling and walking routes as well as natural cognitive paths have been worked out, outings in canoes and recreation in farmsteads of rural tourism are popular.
