DCOM 722 Amplification 3 Provide explanation of differences between proposed course and existing system catalog courses below:
There are no courses offered in the regental system that deal specifically with hearing assistive
devices. In the current program, there is a brief mention of hearing assistive technologies in
DCOM 722, however, due to changes in professional certification requirements for knowledge
and skills in clinical areas, the program seeks to separate content related to Hearing Assistive
Technology into a course the bears the term in the title. Changes to standards certification in
Audiology through the American Speech Language and Hearing Association have resulted in
very specific knowledge and skill competencies, demonstrated in the program of study.
Separation of content related to Hearing Assistive Devices (such as remote microphones,
telecoils, infrared systems) that are used in conjunction with hearing aids and cochlear implants
will allow for adequate coverage of this material for student competency as well as result in the
term “Hearing Assistive Technology” appearing in the student’s transcript.

Separation of content related to Hearing Assistive Devices (such as remote microphones,
telecoils, infrared systems) that are used in conjunction with hearing aids and cochlear implants
will allow for adequate coverage of this material for student competency as well as result in the
term “Hearing Assistive Technology” appearing in the student’s transcript.

applying logic directly to legal and ethical contexts. Students learn a variety of tools in logic and

of general principles to particular cases in order to emphasize the role of logical analysis in real-

Provide explanation of differences between proposed course and existing system catalog courses below:
Introduction to Ethics studies philosophical texts and positions, and cannot focus exclusively
on tools for reasoning and writing about legal and ethical topics. Introduction to Logic
includes a substantial study of formal, symbolic logic and focuses on no particular subject area.
It is important to note that “logic” refers to a specific area of philosophy which is formal,
symbolic, and abstract. Given its importance for philosophy as well as the foundations of
mathematics and computer programming, it is important that such a curriculum remain

available in the form of “PHIL 200, Introduction to Logic”. That formal curriculum, however,
is not necessarily appropriate for students focused on the humanities or social sciences who
seek training in “real world” or “natural language” argumentation such as the critical thinking
problems that are tested on the LSAT exam. This class bears some similarity to SPCM 222
(Argumentation and Debate), but whereas that class is designed to satisfy SGR #2, Oral
Communication, this class emphasizes the analysis of arguments in reading and their
construction in writing.

a successful course structure in multiple sections each semester since the fall of 2015. This proposal, in
effect, is to take a proven curriculum and make it available to all students as a PHIL offering.
2.2. Will this be a unique or common course? If the request is for a unique course, verify that you have reviewed the common course catalog via Colleague
and the system Course Inventory Report to determine if a comparable common course already exists. List the
two closest course matches in the common course catalog and provide a brief narrative explaining why the
proposed course differs from those listed. If a search of the common course catalog determines an existing
common course exists, complete the Authority to Offer an Existing Course Form.

UHON 211 Interdisciplinary Civilization 3
PHIL 420 Ethics and Value Theory 3
POLS 319 Civic Engagement and Activism 3 Provide explanation of differences between proposed course and existing system catalog courses below:
The course differs from UHON 211 in its accessibility to students not enrolled in the honors
program. The topic or theme around which a given course is organized may also vary from the
UHON 211 offering. The proposed course differs from POLS 319 in both its orientation to

topics in applied ethics and its direct emphasis on research, writing, and presentation skills. By
specifically emphasizing the application of philosophical skills in actual practice, the course
differs from PHIL 420 which is a study of ethical theories. While the course themes are
ethical in nature, no prior study of ethical theories is required, and the cross-cutting critical
thinking and research skills are general enough to be accessible and appealing to a broad base
of students.
Section 3. Other Course Information
3.1. Are there instructional staffing impacts?
☒ No. Schedule Management, explain below:
Philosophy faculty regularly staff sections of UHON 211 and other honors courses. The
proposed PHIL course would be offered every three or four semesters, which philosophy
faculty would cover within existing workload by staffing one fewer honors courses that
term.
3.2. Existing program(s) in which course will be offered: Philosophy B.A. and B.S. including
Specialization in Ethics, Law, and Society.

3.7. Will grade for this course be limited to S/U (pass/fail)?

Language Learners K-Adult in a literate environment.
Section 2. Modification(s) Requested
2.1. This modification will include:
☒ A change in description/subject matter content (enter revised description below).
The advanced study of theories, research, and practices that develop the foundation for conducting
classroom research with K-Adult learners. This course focuses on research involving culturally
and linguistically diverse (CLD) learners in various contexts.

☒ Explain any additional minor changes proposed at this time below (if needed):
Course will be retitled to reflect changes in the content and the field.
2.2. Add justification for all changes noted above:
The new title/content better reflects changes in the field that focus on the Integrated Approach,
rather than on the teaching of isolated domains (reading, writing, listening, speaking). The updated
title and content align more effectively with current research practices for practicing teachers, who
comprise the majority of our graduate program enrollment. These changes also align with
additional changes to the graduate program, which move the program from a focus solely on

These courses were mis-described as “G,” clinical courses, because as previously defined, that
label appeared to fit. Now that it is clear that “G” courses refer to the medical field, a more
appropriate designation should be entered. “S” is accurate: these are all fieldwork courses
involving real-world training and client contact, with substantial supervision by a law faculty
member or a licensed practitioner.
