“We wanted to give our drivers the best possible equipment to drive and they love the ease of operation with the 700series”

Company founder and principal John Green, together with his son Budd, run the two

divisions of the company. John is quarry manager and is in charge of the SCCCR quarrying aspect of the business that includes mining and the breaking down of various grades of road-base and aggregates and also the recycling of concrete and other materials. Budd Green, a civil engineer, operates JBG Contractors that construct roads, car parks, subdivisions and stormwater drainage for industrial, commercial

and residential projects. JBG Contractors also has an unrestricted demolition licence.

The Greens are very loyal Hino users, operating a total of 14 Hinos, seven of which being six and eight-tonne rigid tippers. These Hinos do the lion’s share of moving nearly 900,000 tonnes of quarried road base and recycled material annually in and out of the Nowra region.

When asked why he chooses Hino John Green was quick to respond.

“We wanted to give our drivers the best possible equipment to drive and

they love the ease of operation with the 700 Series”, he said.

“The small turning circle gives them greater accessibility and manoeuvrability. The creature comforts and low interior noise level make their day’s work pleasurable. The drivers in turn take pride in their trucks and look after them as if they where there own.

“We have installed GPS in all of the trucks, which makes it easy for us to plot exactly were they are at any one time – for instance if a customer is wanting to know when they might

receive a delivery we can respond immediately with a confi dent delivery time,” he said.

Four of the 700 Series are specifi ed with Bisalloy steel bodies and can legally carry 30-tonnes, the other three have aluminium bodies and alloy wheels – that spec’ adds another two-tonnes of payload.

The truck and dog combinations cover a large area of operation, running down the South Coast as far as Bega, up the escarpment and west to the Southern Highlands and north to Sydney. The trucks are

maintained by J&J Truck Repairs in Port Kembla who run a strict scheduled servicing policy.

John Green says they keep the trucks for four years and then trade one and buy two, so as to maintain their scheduled fl eet growth.

“We will add another three 700s to the fl eet during the coming 12 months and our plan is to have a 20 strong fl eet of these models by 2016,” he said.

Green got underway with one truck at the start of the 1980s – the company now operates some 100

pieces of equipment. The dog trailers are refurbished

every four years and are then used for a further four before a replacement is purchased at the completion of their eight-year cycle.

He says local dealer Illawarra Hino in Albion Park has given them fi rst-class support.

“In fact it has been a pleasurable business dealing with Hino sales manager Kurt Hofer and the truck team,” John Green adds.

Hino’s heavy-duty 700 Series is powered by a 13-litre six-cylinder

OHC turbocharged and intercooled diesel, offering power ratings from 321kW to 353kW and corresponding torque fi gures from 1716Nm to 2157Nm. It has a Jacobs-type engine brake system.

The Greens 700s are spec’d with Eaton-Fuller 18-speed transmissions and have a Hendrickson 460 air bag rear suspension.

As well as operating in an SCCCR Quarries/JBG Contractors truck and dog trailer confi guration, when specifi ed with a GCM of 72,000kg Hino’s 700 Series would be an ideal B-Double combination for shipping container port operations, particularly with the recent addition of the ZF AS-tronic automated manual transmission to the range, as featured in the previous issue of Transport & Trucking Today.

“We will add another three 700s to the fleet during the coming 12 months and our

plan is to have a 20 strong fleet of these models by 2016”
