Dear Colleague,

Coastal Carolina University is excited to host the fifth annual meeting of South Carolina’s Senior Housing Officers (SHO) and, for the first time, the state’s Senior Student Affairs Officers (SSAO). On behalf of Dr. Debbie Conner, Vice President for Campus Life and Student Engagement, I am honored to welcome you to the Grand Strand and the campus of Coastal Carolina University. This meeting always proves an excellent opportunity for us to discuss critical issues in our work and share best practices in an open, roundtable format. I’m grateful that our SSAO colleagues are able to join us and look forward to see what comes from our concurrent and joint conversations. I hope you enjoy your time on our campus and my staff and our partners are ready to do whatever we can to ensure you “Feel the Teal” while you are here. During your stay, please use me as your primary contact for all questions, including any issue you may have while staying on campus or in the area. I am at your disposal night or day and invite you to call my cell phone should you need me. That number is: (843) 283-7688. Again, we are excited you are here and I am excited to learn alongside you. Tradition Hall 130A 8:30am – 9:15am Session 1 – Emotional Support Animals

Tradition Hall 130B Dr. Jennie Cassidy, AVP and Senior Director, Counseling Services, CCU Karen Howard-Goss, Director, Accessibility and Disability Resources, CCU In 2010 Amendments to the ADA regulations narrowed the definition of service animals to exclude emotional support, comfort, or companionship animals that do not do work or perform a task for individuals with disabilities. At the same time, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has been actively enforcing the requirements of the Fair Housing Act that permit individuals with disabilities to keep a broad range of assistance and emotional support animals within housing. As a result, there is heightened awareness of the right to emotional support animals in the student community. There are questions about what types of housing accommodations are subject to the Fair Housing Act requirements. Some colleges and universities have adopted policies for both service animals and emotional support animals; others have no policies.  This session will describe the current law, the conflicts between the ADA/Section 504 and the Fair Housing Act regulations, who should provide documentation for animal
