Save Free Swimming

Dawn Primarolo MP and Bedminster council-lor Mark Bradshaw have given their support

to an online petition to save free swimming for over 60s and under 16s.

The petition, which was started by councillor Ron Stone, aims for free swimming in Bristol to continue in the upcoming years.

Last year 177,000 under 16s and 79,000 over 60s took up the previous government’s free fit-ness offer. The increase in funded swims for older people was 400%, contd on page 3

NEWS E: [email protected] from front pagewhile there was a 27% increase in swimming for young people.

Now local councillor Mark Bradshaw is asking residents to sign the petition, in particular the resi-dents that have benefited from the free swims.

To read more about the petition or to sign it, please visit http://epetitions.bristol.gov.uk/epetition_core/community/petition/911.

Railway On HoldPlans to build an important railway link between

Bedminster and Portishead have been put on hold for the time being due to spending cuts.

It was hoped that a link between the two areas would have helped to reduce the heavy traffic that often clogs the roads.

While there is already a rail link between Portis-head and Bristol, it is a rail for freight traffic up to 30 miles per hour only, and to upgrade the existing track could be costly.

The current track would be able to be used, how-ever there would have to be some extensive realign-ment work.

The cost of the upgrade of the railway has extend-ed from the original £15 million to over £30 million. It was hoped that there would have been funding from the Government in 2014.

New Boxing ClubA new boxing club in Windmill Hill has been set

up to give young people aged between 10 and 18 years old something to do.

The sessions take place at the Methodist Church Hall in Bushy Park at the top of St John’s Lane on Monday evenings between 8.15pm and 9.15pm.

The boxing club is part of ambitions by Neighour-hood Partnership Forums to give young residents more to do in their spare time. The Windmill Hill, Filwood and Knowle Neighbourhood provided the funding for the club.

Pigeon ApologyContrary to what was stated in the July edition of

The Pigeon, Bristol City Council is not proposing any changes to its existing residential Gypsy and Traveller site at South Liberty Lane. The council is putting forward options to allocate up to four additional sites around the city to accommodate 24 new Gypsy and Traveller residential pitches, but none of these would be within Bedminster or Southville wards.

The consultation does include an option to create a new site for travelling showpeople (up to eight plots) further east on South Liberty Lane on land next to the railway (near the humpback bridge). This would be a smaller equivalent of the site that has long existed on Hartcliffe Way. The consultation also suggests other sites within Bedminster and Southville wards for housing, offices, light industry or mixed-uses, and sets out which land would be protected for uses such as open space, industry or shopping. It also contains ideas for draft planning policies that would be used to assess future planning applications. For more information or to respond to the consultation, visit www.bristol.gov.uk/siteallocations, or go along to the city council’s drop-in event at the Southville Centre on 29 September (midday-8pm).

Wessex Watermark AwardAshton Gate Out Of School Care has won a Wessex

Watermark Award for their programmes in both gar-dening and healthy eating.

Ashton Gate Out of School Care runs both a Break-fast and After School Club with many willing help-ers. They run three main activities as part of their gardening and healthy eating initiative for the young children aged 4 -11. One is the vegetable plot, which produces fresh vegetables for the Breakfast Club, and which the children and their families manage. They also have weekly cookery sessions, which in-clude ingredients from their vegetable plots and vis-its to local farms, gardens and food outlets.

Play centre manager Hannah Harris said: “We want to give children the opportunity to experience and learn about gardening, food production and cookery and not to separate one from the other.

“We are delighted with this support from Wessex Water. With our £250 Wessex Watermark Award we will buy more gardening tools and materials to ex-pand our vegetable plot.”

The Watermark Award provides funds for environ-mental projects within the Wessex Water area.

For further information, please contact Hannah on 0117 983 3426.

Leisure Centre Work Work on Hengrove Park Leisure Centre has now

begun, and instead of the usual turf cutting ceremo-ny, synchronised swimmers from the central Bristol Senior Squad performed a walk of their stunning pre-competition routine.

The new build project will double the swimming capacity in the city and will also promote competi-tive swimming across the region. Work on the lei-sure development includes incorporating a 50-me-tre swimming pool with two vertical booms and moveable floor. There will also be a learner pool with a movable floor and a ‘dry’ sports site with a fitness suit, courts, studios and changing facilities.

As well as making a difference to swimming in the city, the leisure centre will also be a key element in the wider Hengrove Park and south Bristol’s regeneration scheme. Over-all, the Hengrove Park development will see a new South Bristol Community Hospital, a new Skills Academy to help local people gain vital skills and

qualifications, and new business opportunities, with the potential to create hundreds of local jobs. Coun-cillor Simon Cook, Bristol’s deputy leader and cabi-net member for capital projects, said: “The start of building working on the leisure centre is another key Hengrove milestone. Thanks must go to the many people who have worked incredibly hard to get to this stage of the project’s development.

“The new leisure facility will be the city’s and re-gion’s flagship pool and sports facility. It will attract swimmers of all ages and abilities - and best of all, its design and high specification will inspire adults and children to take to the water and make a real splash.”

Summer Holiday SportsBristol City Council has arranged a programme of

sports activities for children between the ages of 4 and 16 - Sports Unlimited Plus.

The activities which include athletics, cricket, football and water activities and many of the events take place at Ashton Park Sports Centre, Greville Smyth Park and Victoria Park.

Small fees can apply to some of the activities. To find out more about the events and the venues, please visit www.bristol.gov.uk.

No Calling ZonesFollowing the recent Operation Rogue Trader, lo-

cal police are encouraging anyone in the area who would like to see their street become a No Cold Calling Zone to get in touch with them.

The Cold Calling Zones are streets where cold callers are not permitted to make house-to-house visits unless they have made an appointment with the resident(s) in advance.

Previously, last month, the local neighbourhood police visited all the homes in Ravenhill Road in Bedminster, where the No Cold Calling scheme was received favourably by the residents, and will be put in place.

Advice was also given to the residents on how to avoid becoming a victim of distraction burglars or doorstep criminals.

If you are interested in your street becoming a No Cold Calling Zone, please contact the local police team on 0845 456 7000.

Advertising Scams Consumer Direct is warning local businesses to

beware of the continuing advertising scams within the business community.

Typically the calls are unsolicited and will offer

advertising space for the business in an Emergency Services brochure, and an up-front fee is requested. Sadly, the advertising never materialises and no such link to the Emergency Services exists.

It should be taken into consideration that the ma-jority of publications are reputable, providing some valuable services to many businesses, however there are a small minority that are willing to use dis-honesty for illicit gains.

If you believe you may have been victim to this or any other scam, please call consumer direct on 08454 040506.

PACT MeetingThe next Bedminster Down Partners And Commu-

nities Together (PACT) meeting is going to be tak-ing place on Wednesday 1st September at Headley Park Church Hall, St Peter’s Rise.

These meetings allow local residents to express any concerns to the police. Priorities raised at the last meeting in June included nuisance motorbikes, and burglaries in Ilchester Crescent and the High-ridge area.

The meeting is going to start at 7pm, and all mem-bers of the public are welcome to come along and have a say.

NEWS E: [email protected] Sainsbury’s PlansBristol City Council has rejected plans submitted

by supermarket giant Sainsbury’s for a new store at Ashton Gate football ground.

The new store had originally been recommended approval by the council’s officials but fears that lo-cal retailers would be affected by the new store lead to the rejection. The council refused the plans after four hours of careful consideration at a recent meet-ing.

Bristol City Football Club had hoped that the sale of the land would help to fund a proposed stadium for them.

South Of The River ChoirSouth Of The River Choir - formerly known as

Withywood Community Choir - is looking for more members to join them for fun nights of singing on Wednesday evenings.

The choir sings all kinds of songs from traditional to pop to gospel and will be performing Christmas Delights in December.

Choir leader Liz Welsh is director of Voxpop in Nailsea, and for some years she has travelled the world on cruise ships, conducting successful work-shops with people who haven’t sung together, and

often never sung at all. The group will be starting up on Wednesday 13th

September from 7.30-9.30pm at the Withywood Centre. For more information, please call Liz on 01275 851309 - all new members are welcome to come along.

Art From The New WorldFollowing the success of the Art From The New

World exhibition, join Richard Scarry - the art di-rector of the Corey Helford Gallery - at Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery on Thursday 19th or Sat-urday 21st August, as he gives an introduction to the exciting artists in the show and the contemporary art scene.

Basic Sun ProtectionMost of us have probably had the experience of

sunburn. But how can we avoid sunburn without avoiding

the sun? This first tip may be obvious, but make sure that whenever you spend time in the sun, you are wearing a sunscreen with a high protection factor – factor 30 or above is best.

Protective clothes are a must, especially with chil-dren – a good sun hat is always important. Also, don’t forget that the sun can cause damage to your eyes. Sunglasses should be certified as providing protection against ultraviolet light - look out for sunglasses that protect you from 99-100 percent of UVA and

UVB light. It is a good idea to keep a (well protected!) eye on

the time. The sun between the hours of 11am and 3pm – even in England – is best avoided.

When enjoying the sun, it is always important to

be safe – if you feel unwell, dehydrated or if you are concerned about sunburn, seek medical advice.

T’ai Chi CoursesNatural Way Tai Chi school is developing, with

three principal teachers who are proficient in all as-pects of the syllabus set by Alan Peck, who was a personal student of Dr Chi Chiang-Tao, a pupil of the famous master Cheng Man-Ching.

The current teachers have studied with T’ai Chi and Tibetan Mas-ters of different tradi-tions, and together have 48 years experience studying and teaching Solo, Partner and Sword forms for health, medi-tation and martial as-pects. Two are also fully qualified acupuncturists and one a qualified exercise referral specialist.

From September onwards the school is offering classes for beginners. If you would like to book a course or would like further information, please call 0117 9047156 or see the advertisement below.

Walk Your Way To Good HealthWhen many of us think about trying to get fit, we

think of going to the gym, taking a run, cycling for miles or hitting the weights - we rarely think of go-ing for a walk. But walking a total of 10,000 steps a day can have plenty of health benefits, such as lowering blood pressure, reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke and even helping osteoarthritis.

When going for a walk, most of the work is done by the muscles of the lower body, and as it is a weight-bearing activity it can even help to improve your bone density – but as a low im-pact form of exercise it won’t put very much strain on your joints. Another benefit is that walking can make you feel really good! It can relieve some of the symp-toms of depression and has been shown to improve self-esteem.

To get the most out of walking as an exercise, some experts recommend accumulating a total of 30 minutes of brisk walking on most days of the week.

A great way to work out how briskly you should be walking is to aim for fast walking without overexer-tion – you should be aiming to be able to just about hold a conversation as you walk.

10,000 steps a day can be achieved in many ways, such as walking to the shops instead of driving, getting off the bus a stop or two earlier, or by get-ting up to change the channel on your TV rather than us-ing the remote con-trol. And of course, in Bristol there are so many parks and open spaces to en-joy, that going for a stroll doesn’t have to be a chore - you can rediscover some of the city’s most beautiful spots.

To make sure you get 10,000 steps a day, why not invest in a pedometer? They are great for measuring steps and fit easily into your daily routine – most chemists will stock them for around the £10 mark. So for a cheap and effective form of exercise, why not put your best foot forward and get walking?

Bristol Kite Festival On Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th September, Ash-

ton Court Estate plays host to the Bristol Interna-tional Kite and Air Creations Festival.

The festival will be celebrating 25 years of flying high, and it is also going to be part of the Year of Flight - marking 100 years of the Bristol Aeroplane Company.

Last year’s festival produced a record breaking gathering of crowds, and this year it expected to be

just as popular, partly due to the spectacular flying displays and exciting Japanese kite fighting battles.

As part of the BAC programme, the festival will also include a kite pageant with a focus on the last 100 years of kite development. There will also be team sport kite routines, colourful sea themed kites including octopi, squids and a giant mer-maid, and free children’s kite making workshops.

The festival is not just about kites - there will also be plenty of alter-native entertainment for both children and adults, with fantastic play struc-tures and fun children’s attractions as well as a licensed bar and delicious food and drink.

The festival programme runs from 12noon until 5pm over the weekend, and on Sunday will follow on from Bristol’s Half Marathon, allowing for a jam packed weekend of fun.

The show is free of charge. For more information, please visit www.kite-festival.org.uk.

For co-habiting couples, who jointly own property, the recent case of Kernott and Jones is a cautionary tale. So said a Judge in deciding that Mr Kernott still owned 50% of the property, even though he had moved out 17 years previously, without making any further contributions to the property or the mortgage. In 1985 Ms Jones and Mr Kernott bought a property in joint names for £30,000. Ms Jones paid the deposit of £6000, and the balance was raised by a mortgage. They had two children together and separated in 1993. Mr Kernott left the property, leaving Ms Jones with sole responsibility for all the outgoings on the property, including the mortgage, maintenance and repairs and funding the upbringing of their children. It was agreed that at the time of the purchase, and when they separated, they had an equal share in the property. However, previous court judgments had decided that, because of Ms Jones’ financial contributions after the separation, her interest in the property had shifted to 90% in her favour and 10% for Mr Kernott. He took the case to the Court of Appeal which decided that, whatever had happened after the separation, they still shared the property equally. The property now has a value of £245,000.

Had the couple been married, the court would have had wider powers, in divorce

proceedings, to divide the property interests to produce a fair outcome. In contrast, for cohabiting couples, strict rules of ownership apply and if the property is held in joint names, it will be assumed that the property is owned jointly even if, as in this case, one party’s contributions were much greater than the other.

There is a strong case for the current law to be changed for cohabiting couples, but until that happens, and there is no likelihood of it being any time soon, anyone living together should seek legal advice on how to protect their interests.

Taking proper advice and acting on it can save a great deal of heartache and possible unfairness later on. A specialist solicitor can draw up binding agreements to set out a couple’s financial responsibilities to each other and their shares in joint property. Beach Beautiful Hopefully as you read this you will be doing so from

your garden, local park or perhaps even by the pool. As it is now August and the school holidays are in full swing, many of you will have booked a holiday by the seaside, or perhaps you are making the most of the many parks and greens that Bristol has to offer.

As great as the weather is, there is often one thing that can make even the most body confident women cower in fear at this time of year. That’s right, it’s swimwear season. Bikinis, kaftans, cover-ups and teeny-tiny shorts have hit the high street. Read on for what should be in your shop-ping bag this month...

Firstly, let’s start with the body beneath the clothes. If you’ve been meaning to drop a few pounds or join the gym but never quite got round to it, then you’re unlikely to start now. But if you’re lacking confidence then consider getting a(fake) tan to give you a little colour, exfoliate and mois-turise regularly to keep skin smooth and radiant and be sure to give yourself a DIY manicure and pedicure. All this will give you the confidence you need to bare your

body with pride on the beach.Swimwear has been embracing a modern and futur-

istic style of late, with cut-away swimsuits becoming hot property on both celebrities and the catwalk. To me these barely-there suits are a tanning minefield – imag-ine the strap marks! – but if you are tall and athletic or have a boyish figure then this would be a great option for you. If you have a small chest the look for ruffles, bows and detailing in a bikini top – bandeau styles are a great option too. For bigger busted women, support is crucial so look for bikinis that are measured by cup size, with underwire for a secure fit.

A gorgeous cover-up is essential for protecting your skin from the sun’s rays and to give your look an in-jection of glamour. This summer, the look is sheer and with floating fabrics and prints. Tribal is also a big look which means bright, tropical prints, chunky wooden jewellery and a wide brim floppy hat. Accessorise with gladiator sandals, lots of bangles and the biggest pair of sunglasses you can find.

Whatever you wear, make sure you make the most of the sunshine – it won’t be around for long and there are shapes and styles of swimwear to suit all figures. Just don’t forget; lobster red skin is never a good look so be sure to slap on plenty of sun cream when out and about in the sun!Next month…Autumn/Winter 2010/11 trends.

SPOTLIGHT ON... Local Tourist Attraction Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm

For a great day out in the summer, North Somerset boasts a fantastic gem in the form of Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm - a unique zoo and working farm.

Set in charming 100 acre grounds, the zoo boasts over 100 animals - including lions, tigers, siamang gibbons, meerkats, camels, white rhino, and giraffes, as well as plenty of farm animals, and there are plenty of opportunities to meet and interact with the creatures.

Beautiful deer amble when enter-ing the site, making a lovely first impression, and when our party walked in we were immediately struck by how family friendly the site appeared. The zoo has some spectacular structures for young chil-dren to enjoy and there are well planned picnic areas with benches near the playgrounds as well as undercover areas for when it is raining. Overall there are 12 play areas in the site, each one as exciting as the next.

Follow the path around and you will come across some wonderfully strange American Bison, who ap-peared to enjoy munching the grass, before coming into the zoo farm’s Africa area - home to rhinos, ze-

bras, ostriches and a friendly giraffe called Gerald! Of course, a visit to Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm would

not be complete without a look at the lions and the tigers that followed. A special viewing tower made observing the animals very easy and is perfect for those who are more cautious about getting close to the enclosures.

A hands on area with goats and camels is fun and for a small price you can buy

food to feed them.Other features include free animal

shows in a 600 seat area, bumpy tractor rides, and keeper talks.

The zoo is amazing value for money - and there is further op-

portunities to save money with a season ticket that allows for discount

vouchers for family and friends as well as unlimited access to the zoo.

Overall, there is too much to enjoy at the zoo to fit in one page. The best thing would be to gather your family and friends two by two (hurrah, hurrah!) and discover for yourself.

Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, Wraxall, B248 1PG is open February to November, Monday -Saturday 10.30am-5pm. It is closed on Sundays.

For those of you who have never been to Bristol’s Bal-loon Fiesta, I implore you, make the effort this year. For those of you who have, you’ll already know all

about the fantastic spectacle which engulfs Ashton Court once a year, turning the estate into a buoyant sea of sway-ing colour and one of Bristol’s landmark attractions, which adorns a million postcards, articles and screen savers all over the South West.

First held in 1979, the Balloon Fiesta now attracts crowds of up to 100,000 per day. The increased popular-ity of the event caused Bristol City Council to close the Clifton Suspension Bridge from 2004, due to the added strain caused by the sheer number of pedestrians flooding to Ashton Court.

From Friday through to Sunday at 6am and 6pm will be the trademark mass assents, when over 100 balloons take to the skies over Bristol. This remarkable spectacle is not to be missed, as is the Night Glow, which takes place at 9.30pm. The Night Glow takes place on Thursday and Sat-urday and involves 30 or more balloons glowing in time to music. At 4.30pm on Sunday a rival form of aviation takes centre stage, as there is a fly past from the Red Arrows.

In fine weather, the Balloon Fiesta is a fantastic event for all the family. As well as the obvious main attraction, there are numerous bars, eateries and stalls as well as fair ground rides. For a special occasion, why not check out the Fiesta’s website for details of how you could be a part of the mass assent and take to the skies in one of the many balloons?

The Balloon Fiesta is open from 12 noon on Thursday the 12th until Sunday the 15th of August. Entrance is free of charge.

Rambo, Commando, Die Hard, Uni-versal Soldier; as a child I grew up on a diet of war. Then later, as

an adult I embraced a new generation of violence and death and exploitation in ti-tles like Sin City, Crank, Fearless and The Condemned. Then I had a dream and in that dream I dreamt that the heroes from all those blood-spattered films would unite creating a super-team of killers under the guidance of none other than John Rambo himself. They would give each other new names, macho monikers like Dan Paine, Toll Road, Hale Caesar, Yin Yang and Trench. They would arm themselves to the teeth and after being inexplicably wronged and outnumbered would rack up a body count that Ghengis Khan or Stalin would have been enviable of. Then I was struck with the realisation that I wasn’t dreaming, but watching a trailer for a new film and I was filled with an almost biblical joy; ‘The Expendables’ were a reality.

The film sees beret wearing sixty-some-thing Sly Stallone (sporting Tom Jones’ goatie beard and dye job) direct and star as Barney ‘The Schizo’ Ross, a void of emotion who heads up his close-knit team

of mercenary specialists on a mission to over-throw a ruthless South American dictator. But when rogue ex-CIA operative Mon-roe turns up with Steve Austin and turns things ugly, Ross realises that Arnie and Bruce Willis have set them up and sent them on a suicide mission. And this amounts to noth-ing more than the perfect excuse to watch a who’s who of buffed action legends of past and present doing what they do best; wisecracking, muscle-flexing and taking out an entire army of uniformed nobodies. Oh yeah, and save the girl and I dunno, maybe themselves for a sequel? All you need to know is that

as far as action romps go, this is the stuff dreams are made of.

Is it me or have I seen Michael Cera in this movie before? Playing the geeky, awkward guy again. Between jobs

and in a terrible garage rock band. Smit-ten by the Indie chick who he somehow manages to score a date with. But then bang! In walks her ex and suddenly watch-ing Michael Cera in this movie just got a whole lot more fun. Because this particular

movie is an Edgar Wright movie (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) and in it he’s playing bass playing comic book hero Scott Pil-grim. So if he wants to keep the girl of his dreams, he’s going to have to man the hell up and battle for her heart, which in this case means defeating all seven of her evil ex-boyfriends.

It’s been a long wait since Matthew

Vaughn refreshed the comedy palate ear-lier in the year with Kick Ass and it seems that with Wright at the helm, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World may be destined to be every bit as irresistible. Already a proven talent, Wright is a director unafraid of his influences who freely riffs on their styles, paying homage but with a twist in that his characters are every bit as aware of the source material as he is. In this case it’s a misspent youth of video games, comic books and power-chords that explode into everything from the high-octane battles and musical set-pieces to the cinematic language and eye-candy aesthetic. It re-mains to be seen if the move across the pond, ramped up budget and the absence of his trusted stars in Simon Pegg and Nick Frost will detract from what makes Wright’s own brand of anarchy so damn enjoyable. But then again as my old mum would say, sometimes it’s better to try something new than let it go stale.

The Last Airbender, based on the hugely successful Nickelo-deon animated TV series, is a live-action feature in which human civilization is divided into four nations: Water, Earth, Air and Fire. Set in a world of Asian-influenced martial arts and magic, it tells the story of Aang (Noah Ringer) and his quest to save the world from the ruthless Fire Nation.

The release date has been delayed until mid-August to trans-form the image into 3D, and it looks set to be breathtaking.

CEMETERY JUNCTIONIn Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant’s first collaboration on the big screen, this semi-au-tobiographical adolescent jaunt has their char-acteristic warmth to match the 1970s look. Not a classic but a good film nonetheless.

has proved too tempting for Hollywood as they attempt to dabble with magic this month. Although it lacks the allure of Rowling’s world, there are enough tricks, shiny things and wizardly bust-ups in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice to keep both kids and adults entertained. At least one thing is certain, expect sequels... and lots of them.

GIGS AND MUSICTHELOFT

Eighties Californian punk rock leg-ends Bad Religion are set to play the O2 Academy this August as

part of a handful of UK dates on their latest European tour. Having recently celebrated their 30th anniversary last spring with a tour that saw them trailed by a camera crew to record a ‘30 years live’ collection, and set to release their 15th studio album, ‘The Dissent Of Man,’ later this year, the boys from Bad Religion are showing no signs of slowing down.

Having been credited with the late 80s revival of punk rock as well as influencing a large number of punk and rock musi-cians throughout their career including The Offspring, NOFX and Pennywise, this is sure to be a classic gig of old hits and new and everything in between.

Tracks to look out for will be “21st Cen-tury (Digital Boy)” and “Infected,” as well as their soaring three part harmonies and their religious and politically driven lyrics.

Xavier Rudd’s relentless world tour comes back round to the UK be-fore advancing on the U.S., how-

ever this time he’s stopping at Bristol’s O2

Academy, come August 3rd – and to all world music enthusiasts out there, this is not a gig to be missed.

For those of you who have not wit-

nessed this musical phenomenon be-fore, prepare yourselves for some mind-blowing electrified slide, funky rhythmic grooves and heart-stopping ballads, all of which echo his first-nation Australian influences.

For years Rudd’s ‘one-man band’ live act created one of the biggest, foot stomp-ing sounds to come out of Australia, and as if it wasn’t enough, this year’s tour sees him joined by the incredible two-piece rhythm section, Izintaba, from South Afri-ca to promote his latest and fullest album recorded in Byron Bay entitled ‘Koonyum Sun.’

Many years ago, Xavier was adopted into the Yolngu clan of Northern Queens-land and the ‘Koonyum Sun’ album truly resonates his devotion to their Indigenous teachings. This latest album is riddled with ancient traditional melodies and spiritual rhythms passed down from when time be-gan, so much so that his discography be-comes a spiritual journey and to witness it live will leave you breathless and begging to catch him every time he stops by.

It seems the latest addition of Izintaba has allowed the already phenomenal musician to channel his truly astounding abilities into a trio that does not disappoint to bring you a sound that encapsulates everything from folk and blues to acoustic and funk. Xavier Rudd’s performance is the definition of ‘roots’ music; it’s dynamic and its influence is growing… fast. This will be a rare treat.

DIEGOBy Zosia Crosse

When Venue magazine said that Bristol band Diego made

music ‘to watch planets to’, they were spot on. Only that was a year ago; now Diego are making musical planets of their own. Their new EP, available at the end of the month, is testimony to their growth and so-lidity as a band. With the sensitive snare of new girl drummer, Emily Wilson, a fairytale xylophone and a cascade of strings, ‘Escape’ makes a triumph of a title track, as Kieran Jefferson’s lead vocal and the band’s four-part harmonies create an ethereal and poignant treat. The

heartfelt bass is ever present and adds to the lilting shower of sound that shows Diego at their most grand. They are ready to be big.

Second track, ‘Just Know That I’m Around’, provides shimmering cymbals and sincere but hopeless lyrics reminiscent of Coldplay’s ‘In My Place’; one to listen to when it’s raining. And lastly, the retrospective yet far reaching ‘Past Imperfect’, with big notes and a reverie induc-ing melody.

I would happily dwell on planet Diego.

When Ricky Gervais moved state-side in search of the Hollywood dollar, the British comedy crown

went up for grabs with a number of embat-tled stand-ups and crowd-pleasing com-edy quiz panellers all vying for the throne.

However, with his jolly posh persona and keenly obser-vant eye, it was Michael McIntyre who soared high above the rest and asserted himself as the new darling of British comedy.

So far he’s won Best Stand-up at the 2009 British Comedy Awards, signed a £1 mil-lion book deal and seen his ‘Hello Wembley’ stadium tour become the

fastest selling stand-up DVD ever. Mc-Intyre it seems, is laughing all the way to the bank. But this is comedy’s David Cam-eron, a man with a solid work ethic who you won’t find resting on his laurels for

long. His hugely popular Comedy Road-show has just been commissioned by the BBC for a second series and so McIntyre’s back on the road this summer, testing ma-terial for the new series.

He arrives at the Tobacco Factory this month to introduce John Gordillo, a stand-up recently returned to the circuit after di-recting shows for Eddie Izzard and hosting the little seen topical show RDA. His work is smart and edgy, often running close to the bone, which should mean that it proves a good foil to McIntyre’s crowd pleasing in-offensive exuberance.

But it’s McIntyre that people will be coming to see, and while ardent fans will be bursting spleens at the mere sight of the Muswell Hill funny-man bounding on stage, some will be wondering whether or not McIntyre will have some new tricks in his comedy locker to give added depth to his work in 2010 and keep him comedy royalty for years to come.Tobacco Factory: Aug 25th-26th

Since the Gruffalo was first published in 1999 it has enchanted children and their storytelling parents alike.

It has been animated into a BBC film, au-diobook and the Gruffalo himself is now a favourite cuddly toy and even ride-on suit-case! This month the musical stage play of the Gruffalo roars to The Hippodrome to delight children left hungry for holiday entertainment.

If you don’t have a child under the age of eight, then it maybe that you haven’t come across the Gruffalo yet. Based on an old Chinese folktale, the story cen-tres around the mischievous mouse and his journey through the deep dark wood, where has to employ all his cunning to avoid becoming dinner for the fox, the owl and the snake. He concocts a tale about a terrifying beast to spook the forest’s hun-gry inhabitants but what will he do when he comes face to face with the very beast he imagined... the Gruffalo!

The three person production has been

touring nationally and internationally since 2001 and has been seen by over a million people in over 4000 performances. It is solidly acted and packed full of charming

musical numbers that take full advantage of the well-known rhymes from the book. This is one summer show guaranteed to have your children enthralled!

Last year was a big one for Welsh comedian Rhod Gilbert. A sell-out tour, sensational performances on ‘The Royal Variety Performance’, ‘Live At The

Apollo’, and ‘Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow’ as well as numerous appearances on BBC2’s Mock The Week and Never Mind The Buzzcocks well and truly so-lidified him as a household name.

This year has seen Rhod back on TV with his own show ‘Work Experience,’ which saw him attempt a number of jobs including hairdresser, refuse collector, soldier and parent.

Finally the Welsh Wonder has been released back onto the stand up circuit and is once again gruffly shout-ing about ridiculous things such as duvet tog ratings, service station mince pies and lost luggage. You can catch Rhod at the Bristol Hippodrome on the 31st August. Tickets are £24.50. Booking Line: 0844 847 2325

Mafia II 27th August 2010 - X360, PS3, PC

Released on August 7th is one of this year’s most anticipated games, Mafia II - the sequel to the award winning Mafia. The game begins in Empire City when World War II is spread-

ing across Europe and as time passes players find themselves among 50s fashion and hot rod cars. Mafia II features tracks from some of the American golden era’s most influential artists, adding to the game’s brilliant atmosphere.

Fans of action packed gangster games will love the game play, which is packed with heart stopping car to car chases, hand to hand combat and intense gunplay, and the whole experience will leave you eagerly looking forward to the next release in this excit-ing series.

Madden NFL 1113th August 2010 - X360, PS3

With the disappointment of the World Cup all over, now is the time to console with the games console and have some fun with a different type of football.

American Football comes to life in this new Madden NFL game for both beginners and experienced followers of the series, with a combination of simple and quicker play.

Special features include an all new play calling system, Game-Flow, which allows you to call plays like an NFL coach with ease and simplicity. This new system also enables players to spend more time playing the sport on the field rather than in the playbook – making completing games much quicker.

The game is full of improved animations and control options and there is also an enhanced online functionality and a new broadcast and audio presesntation. The whole package delivers the remarkable Madden NFL experience, which is well known among the game’s fans.

Victoria 213th August 2010 - PC

Victoria 2 is a fantastic new strategy game for the PC, set in the colonial era of the 19th century. Choose a country and take control of it – and guide the na-

tion through industrialisation, political reforms, military conquest and colonisation. The population of your country will react to your decisions, based on political awareness, social class, as well as their willingness to accept or revolt against their Govern-ment.

Special features include several different types of Govern-ment, historical gameplay to a large map that covers the entire world, and the chance to play as over 200 different countries.

This game is certainly not light-hearted – but those who love a good strategy game, particularly those who are interested in this era, will spend hours enjoying Victoria 2.

Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days20th August 2010 – PC, PS3 X360

Firewalk For CatsRegistration is now open for a firewalk at The To-

bacco Factory, North Street to raise much needed funds for Cats Protection - the UK’s largest cat char-ity.

The event which takes place on Thursday 21st October is a once in a lifetime opportunity, giving participants the chance to walk across wood embers without hurting themselves.

There are many theories as to why it is possible to walk over hot coals without pain or injury – includ-ing the poor heat conductivity of wood, the short contact time between the coals and feet, and adopt-ing a ‘mind over matter’ approach. It is guaranteed to be a fantastic experience for thrill seeking cat lovers.

Experts in fire walking - who will be on hand throughout the evening - will give a two-hour train-ing session to participants before the event.

Cat’s Protection’s Amy McKay said: “The fire-walk certainly is a challenge and there’s no doubt participants will have to be brave.”

“However, many people who have completed a firewalk talk about how inspirational it is, so we hope that participants will find it a rewarding ex-

perience - especially as they will be raising much needed funds to give unwanted cats a second chance in life.”

If you are interested in taking part in the firewalk, please contact Amy on 0117 9638752 or email [email protected].

Community Allotment On Wednesday 4th August, a meeting is going to be

held to discuss the possibility of a new community allotment in Bedminster.

The waiting list for an allotment in the area is currently over three years long, but if enough people can be found that are interested in taking part in a community allotment, then the new scheme may go ahead.

A small patch of land has now become available on which the project would take place and the site would need to be cleared for local people to have space to grow food. At least 25 people will be needed to get the allotment up and running.

The meeting to discuss the scheme is going to be taking place at the Albert Inn on West Street, Bedminster at 7.30pm. If you would like to help, just turn up on the day to find out more.

Mark Lock ExhibitionThis month is the last chance to see Mark Lock’s

exhibition of various paintings of the women involved in the many tales, fables and myths that surround King Arthur.

Taking place at the Southville Centre, the exhibition will be running until August 13th.

Membership is free. If you are part of a voluntary or community organisation or a business in Southville, Ashton or Bedminster and would like more information about what GBCP does and how you might help, contact the Secretary on [email protected] or via Southville Centre. For a full list of current partners go to www.greaterbedminster.org.uk. Flower StreetsIn September we will be launching the first year of our Flower Streets project. We are expecting to work with

residents in about six smallish streets across the partner-ship area. The idea will be to make the streets more at-tractive and user friendly: ‘more than just a car park’. We will be looking to help people to improve their front gardens (let’s face it, some people don’t know where to start!). We’ll also look for other ways to brighten the streets with planting and art works. We hope that during 2011 each Flower Street will close a few times, get rid of the cars for a couple of hours and hold a party or a children’s playing event. These things are already begin-ning to happen across Bristol, but we want more. If you think that you and your neighbours might be interested, contact GBCP via Southville Centre (0117 9231039).Better Bedminster Community ChestWe have £21,000 in the bank to spend on local projects. If you have a good idea that will improve the commu-nity, get in touch. Closing date for this round is 30th September 2010.

Your Labour Councillors

Section 106Sean has been involved in two innovative panels to

make sure that local residents have a say in the spend-ing of funding given to the council by developers. This funding - commonly called Section 106 - is designed to address the impacts of larger planning applications. Money is available for traffic improvements, schools and affordable housing, as well as a range of other commu-nity benefits. Until now, this money has been spent by council officers at College Green. Sean explains why this could soon change:

“Section 106 provides very significant funding for communities affected by development. We’ve argued for a long time that local people, who know our communi-ties, are well placed to have a say in where this funding should be directed. That’s why I was very pleased to sit on two panels recently, making recommendations for grants to local community groups as a result of develop-

ment at the sites of the former East Street Baptist Church and St Dunstan’s Church Hall. If you’d be interested in getting involved in these sort of decisions in the future, just get in touch.”

Budget Consultation Local councillors have condemned Bristol City Coun-

cil’s flawed budget ‘consultation’. As a result of the Con-servative/Lib Dem Government’s immediate cuts to pub-lic spending, the council has seen its budget cut. Further reductions are bound to come in the next few years, and the council has asked people to have their say in where the axe should fall. Sean takes up the story:

“So far, so good, you might think. If the council does proceed with these cuts, then it’s important that they consult with everyone who’ll be directly affected. Unfor-tunately, their consultation doesn’t bear close scrutiny. They have provided residents with no financial informa-tion whatsoever to make an informed decision. Despite this, they ploughed ahead and invited all councillors to an important budget briefing. Unfortunately, only three members of the eight councillors who make up the coun-cil’s Cabinet - who make all the decisions – turned up at the meeting. Even the councillor responsible for ef-ficiency and value for money didn’t turn up!

These cuts will affect all of us, and are based on politi-cal ideology, not sound economics. I’ll be doing my best to make sure that Southville residents are protected from the council’s axe.”

Your Green Party Councillor

ALDI Plastic Recycling Residents are still concerned about the removal of

the recycling at ALDI and the Greater Bedminster Partnership has recently passed a resolution to try to get it reinstated. This will add pressure to Char-lie Bolton’s petition, which we shall present to the next full council meeting asking the council to help to return the facility. In the meantime, please sign the petition if you haven’t already. There is a pilot kerb-side recycling for plastic in progress, which may be extended to our area in 2011/12. 20’s Not Enough For Some!

Some drivers fail to understand that the majority of people want safer roads and that there are fewer accidents if speed is kept down. Those of you who live where there is speeding will know that fast traffic

also causes stress and high levels of noise. A packed neighbourhood forum at the Tobacco Factory voted this issue a top priority for police action, so hopefully we’ll see results soon. Budget Cuts

The council is deciding how to make savings de-manded by the new government. We hope that front line services will be protected but there is no guar-antee and we are almost certain to see some staffing cuts. This affects all of us, as more join the queue for fewer jobs and there is less money in the local economy. I was shocked that the council decided to go ahead with more spending on the bus rapid transit scheme, even though many of the houses on the green belt, which it was designed to serve are unlikely to be built now and the transit route itself may suffer government cuts. The scheme will not benefit many in this area, as beyond Ashton Gate the stops will all be on the other side of the river. The BRT will affect the walking and cycling routes along Colliters Brook and the Avon New Cut, so enjoy these while you can! Surgeries

My next street surgeries will be on 25th September and 23rd October from 10.30am-12 noon. As usual, look for the green flag somewhere on North Street.

A word from your Labour MP... DAWN PRIMAROLO I am extremely concerned about the impact of the recent Budget on people living in Bristol South. The Lib Dem/Conservative Govern-ment is failing to support the econ-omy and is making immediate cuts, which will cost jobs. We’ll see VAT increased to 20%, significant

reductions in tax credits and less help for people in need of housing support. Those people who are least responsible for the recession are being made to pay more and I fear that residents in Bristol South, where earnings are already less than the national av-erage, will be hit hard by job losses, pay freezes, benefit reductions and tax rises.

Unfortunately, the Government seems determined to cut now. I’m very worried that this decision is more to do with ideology than economic necessity. The previous Government’s spending plans en-sured that we went into the global recession with the second lowest debt in the G7. At this stage, the Conservatives backed Labour’s spending propos-als. Their policy only changed during the recession, when Labour invested heavily to keep people in work and help those who had become unemployed.

Additionally, of course, Labour stepped in to sup-port the banking system that every one of us relies on every single day. The Lib Dems, for their part, quite rightly campaigned during the election against immediate cuts. Upon entering the coalition, they immediately reneged on this promise. This is despite the fact that the body set up to examine the nation’s finances showed that the economy was actually in better shape than pre-election figures suggested.

The effects of the cuts are starting to bite here in BS3. I will be campaigning against all immediate cuts, and will be working with trade unions to do whatever I can to protect staff and frontline services. Many residents have already taken the time to get in touch about the cuts, and it’s clear that people are especially worried about the abolition of free swim-ming and the slashing of the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.

I’m supporting the Labour councillors’ call for the City Council to bring back free swimming for under 16s and pensioners. The Government has removed the grant for free swims but several local authori-ties are continuing to fund this through their own budgets. Given that Bristol can spend £144,000 on a ‘Place-Shaping Director’ contd on next page

contd from page 36(no, I don’t know what it means either!) you would have thought they would find funding to help pensioners stay active and healthy and give young people something to do during the long summer holidays. Free swims are even more important here in Bedminster, given the much needed recent refurbishment of Bristol South Pool.

Turning to the BSF programme, we are, to a certain extent, fortunate in Bristol. Thankfully the previous Labour Government prioritised the refurbishment and rebuild of our local secondary schools. Bedminster Down has already benefited, while work is nearly complete at Ashton Park. What we need to ensure now is that funding promised by Labour to invest in our primary schools isn’t simply dropped. I’ll be putting pressure on the Government and the council to commit to funding top class education facilities for children in our primary schools, and will keep you posted. Dawn Primarolo MP for Bristol South: Tel: 0117 9090063, email: [email protected]. Write to P.O. Box 1002, Bristol BS99 1WH.

Silver CyclistsSilver Cyclists is a new Life Cycle project that

aims to get people over the age of 55 back on their bikes.

The programme provides group rides for older people who can cycle but haven’t done so for a while. The rides will take place mid-week during the day and start in Easton, Lawrence Hill and Bed-minster. They will be of varying lengths to suit dif-ferent abilities, and each ride will be accompanied by a volunteer ride leader. They will be gentle and sociable and involve frequent stops!

If you are interested in finding out more about the rides, or being a volunteer ride leader, please call Julie Hares on 0117 353 4580.

Cycle Training SessionsFor residents living in Bristol, Bath or North Som-

erset, cycle training sessions with a personal trainer are still available for the price of just £5. The usual price of the classes is £30.

A recent trainee said of the sessions: “Becky my trainer, was absolutely brilliant. She really sorted me out and I now feel a lot safer in Bristol traffic.“ Please call 0117 353 4580 to find out more about the cycling training sessions or to book a place.
