think we all need a little bit of “glam” in our lives now and again; that toe into the world of how the Other Side lives. Yes, clothing is one way to go; fancy cars, jewellery, fine champagne…But when it comes to your home, you can

bring exquisite glam and luxury in without breaking the bank.Take your kitchen for example. Many people say that it’s

the little things that really make a space – and the kitchen is no different. Paying special attention to the finishes, be they cabinets, countertops or splashbacks, brings the entire space together; and if those finishes tend towards the more opulent side like high gloss, or flamed granite – all the better if you are looking for a glamorous touch.

Bathrooms too can be swept with the brush of luxury. Into a clean-lined, clutter-free space, throw gold, chrome, polished nickel and ceramics; a luxurious bath that conforms to the lines of your body; embracing oversized showerheads; a luxury armchair right in the bathroom; mood lighting and audio entertainment.

Into the living room – our deputy editor, Hasmita, reveals some great ideas for creating the ultimate luxe lounge. She explores colour, furniture and accessories, and guides us on how to put it all together. A place where guests can truly unwind in style.

Speaking of guests, how about putting together the ultimate dinner party? Key to the luxe theme are designer tableware and glassware, all beautifully crafted – from fine china, to bone-handles.

Luxe lighting is also a factor to consider: it can truly make or break a room, highlighting objets d’art and standalone features in our homes, or working with contours in the room to create depth and texture. Of course, the design of the light fitting can add tremendous opulence to a space.

If you want to create a lasting first impression, go right back to the beginning and start with the exterior of your home. Various elements like customised exteriors, crafted doors and luxurious flooring, lead to a perception of luxury before you even step foot inside.

While we are on the subject of flooring, you may have noticed a little carpet sample bagged with this issue – that’s a Belgotex carpet right there! And if you turn to page 22, you can enter a competition to win carpets to the value of R30 000! Now that’s luxe!

And don’t forget to enter all our other competitions – you could escape the rat race on a luxury two-night stay for two, valued at R20 000; and we wouldn’t want you to go on that vacation without some snazzy luggage! Win a set of beautiful luggage valued at R7 889 .

Here’s to a great issue – we hope you enjoy it.

he face of luxurious interior design and decor has certainly changed in recent years, and although many people do still spend a fortune on their

homes, the glitz and glam seem to be fading. Rich velvet drapes with Swarovski crystal embellishment, gold-plated finials and opulent chandeliers have diminished in popularity, and are being reserved for the lifestyles of the ultra-rich and famous.

Tough times and worldwide recession have had an impact on even the wealthiest, and although many may still have an abundance of wealth, they are “playing down” their unnecessary ostentatious ornamentation. This worldwide trend has seen individuality, tactility and technology creating a completely new aesthetic.

t

A great example of this paradigm shift is the new-found appreciation for solid wood in its most natural form, mostly devoid of any carving or inlay, but with the thickness and type of timber dictating the price tag. A 12 seater, solid-oak dining table can easily fetch upwards of R50 000, while a similar product in a rarer timber, such as walnut, will cost up to R200 000. With far more stringent regulations and a worldwide awareness of timber, the prices overall have seen a dramatic increase over the past few years.

“New luxury” often includes elements that are not that visible, such as high-tech automation, where the entire house is controlled from an electronic device such as a tablet or smartphone. This automation includes everything from security to temperature control, lighting, irrigation, and obviously all of the audiovisual equipment.

With eco-consciousness deeply embedded in our psyches, those who can afford it will spare no expense in creating a self-sustainable home. Features will include solar energy, harvesting of rainwater and even hydroponic plant features. Huge glass windows with electronic blinds are also very popular in new designs, allowing for maximum use of natural sunlight in the interior space.

Genuine designer items, instead of replicas, also differentiate any elite space. Reviving many lost cabinetry trades and crafts, the search for unique and bespoke furniture is probably the biggest luxury trend at the moment.

Today a big part of luxury living is having one’s personality and unique lifestyle brought to life through a completely unique living space.

Many new homes currently feature cinema rooms, which are acoustically designed and include state-of-the-art recliners, most remote-controlled and some even featuring temperature-controlled seats and backs. The audiovisual elements alone can cost in excess of R1 million, before any furniture or finishes have been added.

“Man caves” have become equally popular, and these can house everything from hunting trophies to vinyl sets and even rare whiskey collections, with the emphasis being on the individual’s interests and not necessarily trends.

Many new homes currently feature cinema rooms, which are acoustically designed…

howto...A guide to buying retro furniture – BY DAVE NEMETH

WITH A NEWFOUND APPRECIATION FOR THE PAST, MORE and more people are in search of retro furniture to add an individual character to their interior space. But what, really, can be called “retro”?

According to eBay, “the amount of time that must pass before something can be called retro is not solidly defined, though it is generally considered to be anything older than 15 years”.

There are a variety of styles commonly defined as retro, such as Bauhaus, De Stijl, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Mid Century Modern. You then have the popular styles of the ’60s, ’70s and now the ’80s. You should brush up on your

knowledge of these periods and styles if you are looking for authenticity, rather than replicas, although replicas themselves are being sought after too. The best way to find out more about these styles is to search online, where you will be able to view thousands of images and detail.

You can go about buying retro furniture in a number of ways, but the obvious is scouring second-hand stores in search of that ultimate find. While this will require some knowledge of the eras and products, the research will be worth it, as this kind of searching will result in genuine bargains.

The second route is to buy through reputable antique and retro dealers. The sales staff in these stores will be highly

knowledgeable, and give you accurate information and advice. The downside to this is that you will be paying collectables prices, but if looked after, these pieces will continue to increase in value.

The third way to buy, and one that is gaining momentum, is online, from a vast variety of reputable sites. The key here is to look at the seller’s history, as well as comments posted by past purchasers. This exciting option allows you to buy great products from all around the world, and often at good prices. This, however, is heavily dependent on the exchange rate, and the shipping and courier costs tend to be a little steep.

Whichever method you choose will require some research, but you will soon be hooked and could quite easily end up a collector in a short space of time.

… You should brush up on your

knowledge of these periods and

styles if you are looking for

authenticity, rather than replicas.

PIETMAN LATEGAN ARCHITECTS

For this property, located in the Eye of Africa,

a renowned residential estate, Pietman

Lategan Architects incorporated a design

that followed basic feng shui principles and

contemporary arrangements. The client’s brief

was for a very spacious and luxurious family

home, which was accomplished by Pietman’s

modernist style. With 20 years’ experience

in architecture and property development,

Pietman is known for the consistency of his

approach and his attention to detail.

escribing their home as modern, classic, eco-friendly, tranquil and homely, the owners of this elegant property had hoped to merge the thresholds of interior and exterior.

Being the builders of the home, they wanted to bring it to life by incorporating the idea of floating elements, using cantilevers on both the floor screening, with LED lighting, and on the roof slab.

“We agreed from the outset that we wanted to create a simple, easy living space in which to love, laugh and entertain, without betraying who we were as a family,” they say.

VASSANJEE PROPERTIES 083 441 6760

ABOVE: Vassanjee Properties was both the building contractor and the project manager for this home. The company used mostly natural materials, from polished concrete fl ooring, double-glazed windows and doors, and wooden fl ooring in the bedrooms, to various paint techniques from Versus Paints and Earthcote, and natural quartz.

For the interior, they chose a white palette to create a minimalist, contemporary feel, using an abundance of natural elements such as glass, aluminium, wood and leather, which they thought would have the least effect on the environment.

“In the spirit of preserving the environment, we installed aluminium double-glazing throughout the house, water-based underfloor heating, solar geysers, polished concrete flooring, and gas stoves and fireplaces,” explain the owners.

Considering themselves small-town folk at heart, they found this estate, which is set in a predominantly farm milieu, to be ideal. It allows them to be far from the madding crowd, while still remaining in Johannesburg.

The wide-open spaces afforded by the estate provided them with a gracefully positioned stand at the end of two roads with heavenly views, as well as a sense of privacy which, they say, tends to elude most Johannesburg-dwellers.

“We were deeply inspired by the modernist architecture of Mies van der Rohe, as introduced to us by our brilliant architect, Pietman Lategan,” the owners add. Achieving the cantilevered look was what they found most challenging as the builders of the home, in that the finish had to be mathematically

perfect at every turn. It was a challenge they overcame, they say, by doing what they do best – constant on-site monitoring, continuous engagement with the engineers and other professionals, taking absolutely no shortcuts and, as always, applying astute building techniques.

They opted to forgo the services of an interior designer, trusting their instincts instead. And their plan was simple: to create a modern home while retaining “good old-fashioned homeliness”.

They started by looking at the exterior facade, and embarked on creating a seamless transition with the interior, with the aim being to create harmony between

the decor and the bricks-and-mortar elements of the home.

“The space that appeals to me most is the covered patio outside our main bedroom … When I sit out there on a breathtaking Highveld evening, it feels as if the moon and stars come out especially for me,” says the lady of the house, who is especially pleased at how easily their daughters immediately felt at home in their new house.

ven though this house, located in the Waterfall Country Estate in Midrand, is modern and open-plan, it is every bit a family home.

The kitchen is the heart of the home. “The kitchen is my favourite room in the house, because it is large, light and spacious, and we spend the majority of our time there. It has a large, built-in table that is used not only for meals, but also as a homework and arts-and-craft spot for the children. In this way, I am able to keep an eye on them while I prepare dinner,” says the proud home owner.

The kitchen is also integrated into the living area, where it shares a stylish and trendy double fireplace with the TV room, and also opens out onto the entertainment area outside.

The home owners say: “We wanted a modern, airy and open-plan home where the interior would flow seamlessly to the exterior entertainment area. For this reason, we added glass stacking doors to our downstairs area.” This modest, yet stylish home, with a muted white, brown and grey palette, effortlessly combines hard

the house provided lots of natural light, making our home bright, calming and inviting,” they say.

This dream house was brought to life by Bobtons Construction, using a “healthy mix of steel, brick and concrete. “This ensured that the client’s brief of a

The home owners chose to design an L-shaped home in their narrow, rectangular stand, to take advantage of the space and to ensure comfortably sized bedrooms. The architect set out to assist the owners with a design that didn’t have a particular theme, but embraced everything they envisioned. “The big sliding doors and windows give us the feel of being outdoors, which we love,” she says.

The interior is still a masterpiece in the making, but

the owners are leaning towards a contemporary look. It’s furnished with old loves from their previous home, and they are in the process of adding new furnishings to compliment these pieces.

“We like to choose our own decor, but do take advice when someone professional offers it to us,” she says.

A firm favourite is the kitchen, with its clean lines and Caesarstone countertops. “I love my kitchen because I enjoy cooking and entertaining, and the view through the sliding doors is absolutely beautiful,” the owner states. The breakfast nook makes this room a family haven.

et in a leafy, secure suburb, this contemporary home with farmhouse sensibilities is the result of compromise and collaboration. “I wanted a farmhouse and my husband

wanted a contemporary house,” explains one of the owners. So to ensure that both of them were happy, they hired architect Simmi Theodourou, who helped them to design a home with a style they have termed “contemporary farmhouse”.

The home has a grey facade that consists of clean, straight and simple lines. The front exterior, which is characterised by four garages and a massive forecourt, is primarily for parking and entering the home. The backyard has a lush garden, 12m heated infinity pool and 60m² undercover patio that is fully equipped with a built-in braai and fireplace, making it perfect for outdoor entertaining all year round.

The interior of the 1 200m² home has a contemporary open-plan layout that accommodates a massive kitchen, scullery, dining room, gym, movie theatre, study, five en-suite bedrooms, guest bathoom, an upstairs pajama lounge, as well as staff quarters that are equipped with two bedrooms, a kitchen, lounge and a bathroom.

And since the residents are keen entertainers, the intention was to create many spaces for family and guests to gather in. Their favourite, of these rooms, is the kitchen. “Everyone hangs outthere,

as it incorporates an eat-in area as well as a lounge facility,” explains the owner. “So the kids can do their homework while I prepare meals, or watch TV right beside me.”

In terms of decor, the colour palette for the home is a tasteful and soothing mix of neutrals: whites, off-whites, browns, beiges, cool greys and warm greys. But to keep the aesthetics from being clinical or uber-sleek, these neutrals are offset by bright pops of colour, prints, artworks and quirky decor finds.

The balance of the contemporary and farmhouse style is particularly reflected in the master bathroom, where modern elements – sleek cabinetry, dropped-in sinks and a generous shower – live harmoniously with barn-style doors.

From the layout to the interior design, everything in

this home is considered and well-placed, giving it a unique personal expression.

“I feel strongly about decor being meaningful and always having a story to tell. That’s why we opted to search the country over time,” explains the owner. “Overall, each room has its own story to tell, and we are so proud of the outcome. No one else can determine our taste, except us. With hard work and a creative vision, anything is possible.”

that was easy, free-flowing and comfortable to live in. We also wanted it to be a house that would allow for lots of entertaining,” they say.

The natural palette used throughout allows the rooms

to flow effortlessly into one another. “We didn’t use an interior decorator, but we knew we liked leather and wood. The neutral colour scheme allowed us to use earthy tones, with a pop of colour to define each room,” they add.

For example, the blue splashback behind the hob in the kitchen creates a focal point in the room. The house also has a touch of sparkle from the mirrors and glass

throughout, which emphasises the special elements in each room.

The enclosed patio that links to the lounge and flows into the dining room and kitchen is their favourite part of the home. “It opens up into the garden and is ideal for entertaining. In summer, the open doors allow acool breezes to drift in, and in winter, the sun streams in, making it an ideal place to entertain all year round,” say the home owners.

The house was built using high-density polystyrene in the foundations and thicker windows, ensuring a warmer house in the colder months. In keeping with the French Colonial architectural style of the complex, the builders also incorporated low-maintenance face brick and rock cladding on the outside.

The home owners were elated when they saw their completed home for the first time. “We were

delighted with the end result. The high ceilings and wide passages give the house a feeling of space. The abundance of windows and glass doors allows for light during the day, and the gas fireplace warms up the house at night. Our home is comfortable, but still very chic.”

pacious practicality is what the owners of this beautiful home requested. And that is exactly what the architect, Euro Prop Design, created. The home is characterised by large windows and elegant features.

“We envisioned our home to be modern, elegant and timeless, with a contemporary feel,” says home owner Dr Singh. Her husband, Dr Govender, agrees. “We are a couple w ith two young children and we imagined a home that was both practical and spacious.”

Their overseas travels were the inspiration for the design. “Our travel overseas inspired us to create a home that is modern and contemporary,” says Dr Singh. The location also played a role in the design. “It’s an elite, upmarket area and has a peaceful and serene setting. The design of the estate is modern, and the open, suburb living appealed to us.”

Using the services of interior decorator Frans Alexander, the owners ensured that the inside is as impressive as the outside.

Their favourite room is the master bedroom, with its massive headboard and soft colours. “The luxurious feel, the pastel shades and textures of the interior make our room a warm and cosy place in which to unwind after a hard day,” she says. The large bathroom features a luxuriously deep bath, a white vanity and a shuttered window.

The kitchen, not to be outdone by the rest of the house, is a chef’s dream. The

he relaxing atmosphere and lack of walls appealed to this family’s need for time off from the busy life they lead in Johannesburg.

“We were looking for a simple house design, and we also wanted something different from our current home in Johannesburg. I wanted a different feel; I didn’t want to leave my house in Johannesburg and still feel as if I’m in the same house in KZN,” says the home owner.

With an established reputation for building innovative homes and keeping his clients’ wants and needs in

mind, Clayton Hodgson of Crest Developers was called in to fill the brief.

The architect and interior designer did a perfect job. The main entrance to the house is on the first floor, where the bedrooms are situated, and you have to take a downward route to the living room. “I love the flow of the house and the open-plan design, combined with rooms that can be opened up or closed when desired.”

Not wanting modern furnishings, but rather solid wood, traditional shapes, the home has a rustic, rural

feel. “Some pieces we purchased, but the majority of pieces were manufactured for us,” she says.

The kitchen, being the favourite room in the home, took some serious design consideration. “I was tempted to have a modern kitchen, but I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it. I had bought the appliances even before we designed the kitchen, so the brief to my kitchen designer was that whatever we came up with had to be designed around the stove. I was also not certain if the modern kitchen design would go with the Ranger stove.

“We ultimately decided on a design that brings together a modern look and traditional aesthetic; the cupboards are modern and the centre island is traditional. This works with the overall feel of the house, where there is a little bit of shine, which doesn’t offend

me, as it is well integrated into our style,” says the home owner.

ith the mountain in the background and swimming pool in the front, this elegant and charming home, with square lines and

an immaculate garden, blends into an endless view. Large windows emphasise the openness of the home, and give an all-round view of the outside.

The interior of the home is modern and stylish, and features a comfortable lounge that looks out onto a spacious entertainment area. Surrounded by glass and looking out into the distance, the home owners have created a dream relaxation area. The dining area is elegant and warm, with beautifully crafted chairs and a fireplace for cosy dinners with family and friends. The white and wood theme moves freely through

the home – not excluding the kitchen, where a white central workspace with wooden countertops accentuates the bare wooden trusses and wooden floor, giving the kitchen a rustic cottage effect. This is enhanced by the butcher’s rack above the counter; the down lights give the area a soft, candlelit ambience. And a window seat adds to the homely, cosy kitchen atmosphere.

Decowood shutters increase the expression of space in a home that is light and roomy, even in the bathroom, where an enormous shower with his-and-hers showerheads, a white bath, quality taps and an elegantly crafted wooden vanity creates a feeling of luxury. facetofaceA glimpse into the lives of decor and design professionals – BY REFILOE SERAI-MZOLO

Although the brand is undergoing some changes, the fundamentals of the Bakos Brothers brand remain, which include unwavering quality and comfort, and providing furniture in bespoke sizes and colours. “Quality and comfort always come at a premium, but we do believe we can offer this quality and comfort at more affordable prices,” says David.

For David, success in business is a team effort. “I spend a lot of my time identifying key positions with key deliverables, and then hunting for the talent and skills required to deliver my vision and execute the strategy. Finding the requisite skills, coupled with the requirement to fit the mould in terms of the company culture and values, is an ongoing, but exciting challenge.”

My favourite product in the Bakos Brothers range is the leather sofas produced in our own factory. Our use of memory foam, the highest-grade leather and solid-wood frames make for a product that is genuinely world-class and should last a lifetime if it is well looked after. The current trend in furniture revolves around entertaining in the home with family and friends. Comfortable daybeds, sofas and corner suites are in huge demand. The combination of fabric and leather coverings, as well as richer, warmer fabrics, is on trend right now.My favourite decor style is both classical and modern contemporary. My work area at home and my dining room are classically decorated. The rich, heritage look and smell of darker, fresh-polished, carved lines are timeless, and I foster great appreciation for such pieces. My bedroom and entertainment areas are dec ated with modern contemporary pieces with sleeker lines, glass mixed with lighter woods and a bit of metal.

rite decor item I’ve bought would have to be my dining-room set – a classic, timeless,

French-polished, 12-seater piece. We have celebrated many good times around the table and it will be handed down to one of our lucky children. A special piece would be my lattice, hand-carved, Indonesian coffee table that I bought 15 years ago. Pieces like it are rare and

I appreciate it for its beauty and craftsmanship. If money were no object I would buy an original South African artwork, like a Kentridge, Pierneef or a Stern. If I wanted to splurge, I’d get a Picasso or a Monet. But then again, if I had so

ly wouldn’t be in retail; I’d be on a deserted beach somewhere.

DAVID JACOBSONBAKOS BROTHERS

ith more than 40 years of experience as a leading decor and retail specialist, Bakos Brothers is repositioning its brand under the leadership of

newly appointed managing director, David Jacobson. David is a heavyweight in the retail furniture industry, having successfully assisted in building brands such as Wetherlys and Coricraft during his illustrious career. He hopes to revitalise the compa , which finds itself competing with a growing number of retail brands.

s one of the most valuable spaces in a home, kitchens tend to be the single biggest expenditure.

Owners who want to maintain and increase the value of their homes usually invest time and money in designing luxury kitchens, or updating their kitchens

so that they have equal parts style and efficiency. When doing so, one of their biggest focus areas is the finishes, because in this central gathering place, cabinets, countertops, splashbacks and other finishes and materials don’t just add to the aesthetics, but the functionality too.

Lisa Aspeling, of International Slab Sales, explains: “Luxe kitchen finishes are the top-end, state-of-the-art design aesthetics.” These finishes aren’t just aesthetically pleasing; they are also highly functional and of the highest quality, making them worth the hefty price tag.

So, what luxe kitchen finishes can be found in today’s homes? Francois Bekker, sales and design consultant at Snaidero Cucine, says: “New technologies are always becoming available in the industry, such as internal pull-out systems, as well as draw or cupboard organisation systems with soft closing. Sinks, washbasins and taps are constantly being altered and improved, and finished in new and more user-friendly materials.”

Caesarstone South Africa reports that steel, glass,

High-gloss lacquer is still one of the most popular finishes, as it offers a sleek, contemporary

and luxurious feel.

laminates, natural stone, quartz surfaces, porcelain and timber are among the most popular for splashbacks, countertops and cabinets. And home owners have also begun juxtaposing materials. According to a Eurocucina 2014 report compiled by Caesarstone, this mixing and balancing of various textures “helps to create ‘living’ spaces that seem to encourage real engagement with the design elements, instead of warding off interactions that might leave evidence such as fingerprints and smudge marks”.

Eyaaz Waja, an interior designer at German Design Haus, notes that dark-stained veneers are also trending. This finish is processed by hand, meticulously selected by skilled artisans, and over 12 weeks laminated to the furniture board; thereafter, a clear, glossy lacquer layer is added, he explains. “The end result is phenomenal.”

For home owners who want to add a touch of glamour, Eyaaz says stainless steel and nickel gloss-edged drawers and glass-framed doors are a popular choice.

But even with the addition of new materials, techniques and eco-friendly options, Philip

Richards of blu_line says: “High-gloss lacquer is still one of the most popular finishes, as it offers a sleek, contemporary and luxurious feel. However, this finish is contrasted at times with contemporary reconstructed veneers or with stone porcelain. Concrete and textured surfaces, such as flamed granite, are also popular.”

Philip says these materials are still preferred, because when it comes to kitchen aesthetics, a clean and uncluttered, modern look is still the most favoured.

Mixing and balancing of various textures helps to create ‘living’

It’s a style, he says, that meets people’s demands for a space that is ordered, functional and ultimately relational.

Colour is also an important consideration when choosing a finish. As in previous years, neutrals, colours are en vogue. They bring a warm and enduring quality to the overall feel of the space, while at the same time creating drama and purpose when needed.

But regardless of which colour palette, materials or style you opt for, always consider the warranty, durability, longevity and eco-friendliness of the finishes. “You want to select finishes that will serve the kitchen and your home for at least ten years, without looking dated or worn, and which will contribute towards a space that makes you feel comfortable to inhabit and where you can host guests,” adds Lisa.

These finishes aren’t just aesthetically pleasing; they are also highly functional and of the highest quality, making them worth the hefty price tag.

here is nothing quite like slipping into a warm bath after a long day or jumping into the shower to warm up on a cold, winter’s morning. The

bathroom is a space made for revival and restoration, and a little touch of luxury is all that is needed to take the experience to the next level.

“Luxury is not only seen, but also felt – from the softness of cuddly towels, smooth tiles, warmth underfoot and the robustness of taps and mixers, to the layering of soft whites, light sparkling off fittings, and the presence of calmness and beautiful fragrances,” says Joslyn Goodale of Victorian Bathrooms.

The basicsA luxurious bathroom has clean lines, is comfortable and inviting, and clutter-free. Joslyn suggests that when creating a luxurious bathroom, stay away from transient trends. Rather choose a timeless style that will continue to be opulent for years to come. Colours such as white in various tones and textures create an ageless effect, while high-gloss materials that glisten, such as chrome, polished nickel and ceramic, all create a sense of lightness.

Heather Darby of Bathroom By Design suggests having large windows in your bathroom, especially if you have a beautiful view. Large windows will provide natural light and make the space appear bigger. Oversized mirrors also create a dramatic focal point.

Stylish sanitarywareTaking a bath is an extravagance in itself in today’s fast-paced society. Joslyn recommends a rounded bath for two that conforms to the contours of the body and allows for quality time to be spent with loved ones.

Mark Bennet of Jeeves advises installing stylish steel baths that are scratch and abrasion-resistant and retain heat, for lingering baths.

Showers were not always considered a luxury, but with current time constraints, they have become an important feature of a bathroom. The experts at Hansgrohe – which has a wide range of luxury sanitaryware – suggest incorporating overhead showers with large heads; these are not only attractive, but dispense water evenly over the body, making for an enjoyable showering experience.

Current technology ensures that showers are also eco-friendly and economical, with no increase in water consumption. Adjustable hand showers are also useful, as you can move the water around where needed, allowing for easier rinsing off – some even come with a massage function for added luxury.

Heather proposes spacious double showers that allow two people to shower at the same time. Showers that also have seating areas allow you to spend more time in the shower, because you don’t have to stand throughout the showering experience.

Luxury is not only seen, but also felt.

Bathroom vanities are functional pieces, usually housing the basin, storage and a mirror. Add a touch of opulence by installing a freestanding vanity on wall brackets or ceramic legs, which are more elegant than vanity cupboards and will make your bathroom appear larger and cleaner, Heather suggests. She also recommends double vanities, which will give each partner their own personal space, which means no more sharing.

Although the ultimate luxury in toilets is heated seats, which ensure a warm and comfortable experience, wall-mounted toilets are also gaining in popularity. These usually have concealed cisterns and plumbing, will give the bathroom a minimalist feel and create a more stylish space.

Accessorise your bathroomIncorporating furniture into the bathroom creates an element of old-world elegance. “An armchair in the bathroom is not only practical for seating purposes or draping clothes; it also brings softness into a rather cold environment,” Heather says. She also suggests long seating units and loungers, which are not only functional, but can serve as a work of art.

Ornate taps in materials such as gold, bronze, nickel and chrome will create an eye-catching centrepiece in the bathroom.

Mark points out that bathrooms are

notoriously difficult rooms to warm up. He suggests towel heating rails that will warm up your towels and prevent the shock of cold air after taking a bath or shower.

To complete the luxurious feeling, Joslyn recommends adding soft, fluffy gowns for comforting warmth, scented candles for invigorating fragrance, and gentle music to allow for relaxation.

o longer a room reserved for visitors, the living room is a space that brings family and friends together. Here’s how

you can give this popular room, and often the first room your friends and family step into, your personal touch.

The shell Once you’ve decided on a decor style, whether it’s rustic, eclectic, modern or traditional, half the task is done. Now it’s about deciding on a colour palette.

The Plascon colour specialists point out that “the living room is the emotional hub of the home, and it’s important to amp up its feel-good factor with colour”.

Colours that work well in a living room are earthy greys paired with a pop of vibrant colour; soothing and calming tones of blue with splashes of white; and shades of white paired with graphic black artwork and texture. These colour palettes are merely a guideline, but you should aim to maximise the amount of natural light, and having a neutral base colour will create a space that is fresh and bright.

n

By keeping your walls light in colour, you can build contrast with a beautiful feature wall. Stephen Black of Black Fabrics suggests using wallpaper as an interest feature, together with an interesting mix of textures to create a tactile environment.

The necessities The key trend is relaxed luxury, says Franco Rech of Classic Revivals. “We’re seeing a style for the lounge that is sophisticated but not fussy; people are no longer interested in living in spaces that look like they are untouchable.”

Gladys Griffiths of Griffiths and Griffiths Heritage Furniture adds: “A living room should always include an elegant, yet comfortable couch (or two), arm chairs or occasional chairs, a coffee table and lamp tables. All of these furniture pieces need to be arranged around special focal points, such as a fireplace or feature wall.”

The accessories This is where the fun begins. From rugs and scatters to throws, plush curtains and memorabilia – these are some of the things that make your living space reflective of you and your family.

“The convenient thing about luxe is you can add or take away as much of it as you like,” says Alex Cresswell-Turner of Trade Secret. “Be on the look-out for pieces that combine different materials and textures, A few metallic highlights add some essential glamour to a luxe lounge, but be sparing or you will detract from their impact.”

Something to keep in mind, advises Shay Speirs of Sutherlands Home Furnishers (SHF), is that lounges are best suited to changing with the seasons. As we shift into winter, the tones and textures need to be warm and darker. “The cotton couch throw gets replaced with a thick knitted or faux fur throw, and the magazine basket gets filled with firewood.”

As Shay reminds us, when decorating any space, and particularly your living space, it’s important to keep it uncluttered. “Allow the various indulgent items to gracefully hold their own space and be noticed.”

Creating a lounge where you can put your feet up, read a book and spend good, old-fashioned, quality time with family and friends is part of making your house a home.

ardening enthusiasts all over the world will tell you that there is something truly enriching and

inspiring about growing plants, flowers, herbs or vegetables in your own backyard.

And when you are around a bunch of gardeners, you are sure to hear some impressive gardening tales, because serious gardeners always have something interesting or valuable to say to someone who shares their passion for growing things. They can explain how and when they started their first garden, which plants they included and how much trouble it was getting things just right.

Garden and landscaping shows are where these kinds of conversations happen. It is here where gardening aficionados can find out about the latest trends in terms of methods, seeds and

Chelsea Flower Show in London last year. The Chelsea Flower Show is known to showcase the best plant and landscaping design in the world, and is regarded by many as the premier international show. The Wisconsin Public Television’s Garden Expo, held in mid-February, takes a particularly educational approach, hosting seminars and stage demonstrations on topics ranging from beekeeping to urban fruit foraging, and has dozens of master-gardeners and horticulture experts on hand to answer questions.

In comparison with these international events, local shows tend to be quite small, typically taking place at retail nurseries during spring and early summer, as a kick-off for the new season. Craig de Necker from The Friendly Plant says international shows, especially those in more developed parts of the world such as the USA, Middle East, China and Europe, offer a far greater variety of everything to do

“Where we would have, say, 50 exhibitors at one of the bigger local shows, they will easily have a few hundred. They not only have more exhibitors, but typically far larger budgets and therefore more impressive stands,” says Craig.

However, it’s seldom feasible to travel to and attend shows abroad as, in many cases, such a trip would cost a large chunk of what home owners would have budgeted for their entire gardens. Nevertheless, visiting a gardening expo, whether local or abroad, is sure to broaden your knowledge and enhance your gardening experience.

Probably one of the most important tasks to do during the month of July is to give your roses a strong prune.

Tools for pruningThe most important pruning tool is a good quality pair ofEfekto secateurs.A good Efekto folding saw is another requisite.

Tips for rose pruningStart by using the Efekto saw to remove old, unproductive canes completely at the base. Then cut out any dead shoots and crossing-over branches.Next, snip off any twigs that are too thin to carry flowers. Finally, shorten back the remaining branches by at leastone third. Cut back just above an outward-facing bud.Remove all remaining leaves from the plant. While the roses are still completely bare, spray allover with Efekto Kumulus WG. This will kill off over-wintering mites, fungal spores and rose scale. When the rose showssigns of new growth, feed with WonderVitaliser Rose and Flower8.1.5 (17) + C (8) SR*.

or some people, hosting a dinner party is a common occurrence. For others it is something that happens rarely, and only in celebration of

special occasions. Regardless of the category you fall into, luxury

tableware is sure to be a subject that will interest you – because anyone who hosts a dinner party would notwant it to be anything less than perfect, and having the right dinner set, cutlery and glassware is equally as important in achieving that goal as the food that will be served.

There seems to be an endless supply of tableware sets in various styles, patterns, colours and materials. There are designer brands of tableware, limited editions of fine china, and even tableware that is

adorned with precious metals, such as gold trim – all of which have a different appeal.

The best advice is to keep it simple and stick to basic colours. In fact, the most popular dinner sets seem to be derivatives of the classic styles, as people believe they never date, and thus offer a sense of reliability and comfort.

In 1931, Arzberg launched a range of tableware that was to revolutionise the world of fine china. “Form 1382”, which was designed by Dr Hermann Gretsch, ultimately became the template for Arzberg’s philosophy of good design. To this day, this best-seller’s simple and practical form still captivates the market, seemingly immune to the changing moods of fashion.

and eclectic shapes, from vibrant coral branches to brightly coloured birds and chinoiserie. It’s really about what you are comfortable with.

In terms of cutlery, a lot of gold or brass pieces, as well as bamboo and bone-handled designs, are making a novel comeback.

“The appeal of designer dinnerware and glassware, or any designer product for that matter, lies in its craftsmanship and unique design, and often its exclusivity. I think it’s a combination of these factors that determines its designer qualities,” says Shayna McAllister from Jenna Clifford. “In my mind, the shape and thickness of a plate can influence how food tastes.”

Shayna is of the belief that luxury is all about craftsmanship and meaning. If an item is beautifully crafted and not mass-produced, she says, it becomes valuable in its own right.

And then there’s always the issue of price and whether it, in itself, is a reflection of the superiority of one product over another. Susie Ord from Sarah Ord Interiors says quality (particularly of the material, workmanship and attention to detail) should be the criteria, but that this is often evidenced by the price.

Berzack Brothers, an importer of designer tableware, adds that there are other ways of determining the quality of tableware. “When good-quality fine porcelain china is held up to the sun, for example, you will be able to see the outline of your hand through it,” the company says.

he exterior of a home is an introduction to what’s inside. Since it’s the first thing people see, it can either make or break the first

impression. It also reflects its inhabitants’ style, and sets the tone for the overall mood of the home.

The exteriors of local luxury homes vary widely, depending on the personal tastes of the owners. Some have an understated elegance, while others appear more opulent. But despite these differences, architectural innovations and ever-evolving home design trends, many modern, luxurious homes share common elements.

t

Classical grandeur never goes out of fashion, and can easily be updated and revamped to freshen its look without major structural changes.

grand exter iors

Tailor-madeAs with luxe, modern interiors, most of today’s exterior trends aren’t just about aesthetics. Modern home owners are ensuring that their exteriors are tailored specifically to their lifestyle, hobbies and individual needs or tastes. This means that today’s grand exteriors aren’t just opulent and made from good-quality materials; they may also use insulating or energy-efficient materials, be low-maintenance and have a distinctive, minimalist style.

The doorsAs we all know, doors play a major role in creating an impressive entrance. Whether it’s the front door or garage doors, Rob van den Berg of Absolute Doors says low-maintenance doors are trending, and that more owners are “definitely going the green route”. Aesthetically, Rob says there is an increased interest in smooth-profile garage doors with windows. Materials such as steel and timber have also grown in popularity.

Floored for choiceOne of the most popular trends is low-maintenance flooring. There are a number of companies such as Natural Quartz Flooring that specialise in luxurious outdoor flooring that is non-slip, and quick and easy to install. Bryn Evans-Riche, managing director of Natural Quartz Flooring, says: “This trend is driven by the lack of time to complete revamps or to finish off projects.”

Grand can also go horribly wrong if not tempered by

a design sensibility.

The classicsWhile most trends lean towards the minimalist look and feel, aesthetically there is also a return to old-world, French glamour and dramatic detail. Alison Weihe, marketing director of Colonial Stone, notes: “Classical grandeur never goes out of fashion, and can easily be updated and revamped to freshen its look without major structural changes.” This is reflected in exteriors with architectural elements such as stone facades, ornamental arches or French doors.

But bewareBryn notes: “The concept of different areas in different colours should be avoided, as the finished result looks like a patchwork quilt blocking the natural flow of the building.” Instead, opt for continuity of colour that can either contrast or match the overall theme of the home.

According to Plascon colour specialists, using one colour for the whole area will create flow to the exterior and make the area seem larger.

When it comes to your home’s exterior style, Alison says: “Grand can be fun. Grand can be playful. But grand can also go horribly wrong if not tempered by a design sensibility. One should avoid too much clutter and overdosing on design elements that do not work together.”

So whether you want to enhance your curb appeal, increase the value of your home, welcome your guests in dramatic style or customise your exterior to fit your personal style, be sure to consider the overall effect for a failproof design.

uhammad Garda of Poliform South Africa describes early walk-in closet designs as

simple, dark spaces with shelving and hanging rails. Nowadays, through customisation and personalisation, they are becoming roomier and allow for a delightful dressing experience.

This area has now become an extension of the bedroom, and should be both functional and

aesthetically appealing. “Walk-in closets are all about flow – a closet working in tandem with our intuitive way of doing and locating things,” says Marion van Vught of German Design Haus.

Creating the perfect walk-in closet for your needs is dependent on how much space you have and your budget, because all of the other features, such as materials, colour and finishes, are limited only by your imagination.

Current trendsHeavy oak and walnut wood, beige walls and heavy brocade fabrics used to be the ultimate in walk-in closet design. However, there is currently a move towards natural materials, textured engineered woods, bold colours and prints in wall panels, wallpaper and paint, coloured mirrored fronts and high-gloss lacquers that create a striking visual effect.

“Due to increasing interest in going ‘green’, the resultant backlash against overindulgence has created a strong interest in minimalism, both with regard to design and what is actually designed in the closet,” says Marion.

Current trends in walk-in closet design also include sliding doors, both manual and motorised, instead of the standard hinge-door design. Another popular trend is “open cabinetry with internal fittings and technological details, together with unique materials, instead of standard shelves fixed to the wall”, notes Flavio Manzo of 2md Exclusive Italian Design.

“Walk-in closets are all about flow – a closet working in tandem with our intuitive way of doing and locating things.”

Storage The primary function of any wardrobe is storage, and walk-in closets are no different.

“A well-balanced closet should have long and short hanging space, high shelving to display and show off designer bags and shoes, and eye-level shelving for folded items. Include compartments for storing accessories and have some open space to house perfumes and cosmetics,” says Muhammad.

“Various drawer solutions with internal inserts ensure that every item of clothing has a practically and clearly defined space,” adds Philip Richards of blu_line. He suggests storing accessories such as socks, belts, ties, scarves, jerseys and jewellery in the various internal divisions. Box shelving, hanging systems and other shelving solutions can be used to cater for other items in this space.

Marion advises including separate pants and shoe racks, and multiple levels of hanging rods, which will also add height to the space.

Although storage is the primary purpose of the walk-in closet, Flavio stresses the importance of the space being functional and everything being easy to access. He suggests pull-out trays and racks, which will allow for faster choice while dressing, and glass-fronted drawers and glass shelves to see immediately where everything has been stored.

Reflective glass fronts help to create a feeling of openness and lightness, Muhammad adds.

Finishing touchesAs a functional space, it is important that your walk-in closet is user-friendly. Tall or large mirrors will not only allow you to see how you look, but will also give the illusion of a bigger space, especially if the closet is small.

Good lighting is essential, as closets usually don’t have windows, and thus no natural light. “The correct lighting solution within the closet can create the right ambience for relaxation,” notes Muhammad.

Flavio differentiates between task lighting, which ensures that you can see what you are doing, and mood lighting, which creates a comforting atmosphere.

To make the space more comfortable, Marion suggests adding a vanity or dresser with seating, such as an ottoman, a circular sofa or classic stools, plush carpeting and underfloor heating for winter, as well as air conditioning for the warmer months. Even multimedia elements such as a television set or iPod dock can be incorporated into the closet.

All of these elements together will add to the comprehensive experience of the space.

ighting can make or break a room. Despite being overlooked by many homemakers, every interior designer and lighting specialist will tell you that good

lighting is at the core of every great interior-decorating scheme.

Jason Rivkind, director of Streamlight, explains: “Without good lighting, all of the other luxury items, such as sumptuous finishings, opulent flooring and feature walls and wallpapers, will be lost.”

In addition to illuminating spaces so that we can perform everyday tasks, or highlighting objets d’art and standalone features in our homes, lighting can also

l add to the aesthetics and ambience. That’s why home owners who want to set a glamorous tone and create a luxurious atmosphere are opting for luxe light fittings.

Melissa Davidson from The Lighting Warehouse says: “Luxury light fittings can be defined as any kind of light fitting that adds a sense of luxury and glamour to the space in which they are featured. Of course, they remain functional, yet they are also aesthetically gorgeous – often making a statement and standing as a feature in their own right.”

The most popular types of luxe light fittings are chandeliers, pendants, ceiling flush mounts and ceiling

semi-flush mounts. The experts advise that you assess the size and needs of your room in order to determine which is best for you.

“For example, chandeliers are ideal for dining rooms, bedrooms, entrance halls and lounges, but they are not ideal for rooms such as studies, which require focused task lighting, or wet areas, such as bathrooms,” says Melissa, adding that chandeliers are especially suited to rooms with high ceilings.

Ceiling flush mounts are versatile enough

to complement any room and design style, but they are generally used in bathrooms, kitchens and patios, because they provide general lighting. And since they are mounted to the ceiling, they are especially good for rooms with low ceilings.

Ceiling semi-flush mounts are very similar, but aren’t completely mounted. They are slightly suspended from the ceiling, adding a little extra drama. They are also great for rooms with comparatively low ceilings.

“Of all the various forms of light fixtures, pendants offer the greatest opportunity to make a statement and introduce a pop of personality to a room,” says Melissa. “Though functional – in that they provide either overall ambient light or directed task lighting – pendant fixtures come in a wide range of styles, shapes, materials and colours that can be combined to form a dramatic sculptural focal point in a room.”

Nowadays there are also many energy-efficient luxe light fittings. Consider LEDs, as they are long-lasting and have evolved from being purely functional to including high-end fittings ranging from decorative ceiling fixtures to chic, modern pendants.

But regardless of which luxe light fitting you choose, the experts all agree that one should never compromise on quality. Glyn Rudolph from ORA The Outdoor Boutique adds: “Don’t buy the most cost-effective; you will come short. If something costs more, it is for a reason, and especially for outdoor

spaces, you want durability, weather-resistance and a good IP rating.”

Also remember to consider the availability of replacement light bulbs and, most important, where you intend to put the lights.

Dianne Jordan, of Eurolux, notes: “The reason for this is that most luxury fittings are quite fragile and it wouldn’t be a good idea to place an expensive crystal chandelier near a front door where it could be exposed to the elements and possibly damaged. Also make sure you have a qualified electrician who is able to install your fitting.”

Now that you know what your options are and how to choose, don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through your home using luxe light fittings.

Look to the sunConverting your home to solar power – BY SUNGULA NKABINDE

iven that sunlight is free and practically limitless, it is no wonder that more and more home owners are converting their

homes to run on solar-power systems. Going solar would not only reduce your electricity bill, it would almost obliterate your carbon footprint, as the sun provides clean energy with no greenhouse-gas emissions.

But there are factors to consider when deciding on whether solar power would be a good choice for you – and cost is only one of them.

You should first consider your power consumption

per month. This involves looking at your electricity bill and trying to figure out how many kilowatt-hours you use per day, as well as the type of loads you have and patterns of usage.

You would also have to be aware of the type and strength of your roof structure, as this is where solar panels would be installed. And once they’re installed, it becomes your responsibility to keep the panels clean, as too much dust and bird droppings on the panels can reduce the amount of sunlight striking them.

You should also consider the surroundings of the house to ensure that no shade falls on the roof.

Aesthetically, you may want to consider a section of the roof for the panels which is not too exposed, keeping in mind that, for maximum efficiency, solar panels must be facing north and tilted at 25-30°. If your roof is not strong enough, you may have to consider building a structure for the panels separately.

Martin Watson from Hidrou-Land Solar says it is best to take a step-by-step approach when converting to solar, so as not to be overwhelmed by the process.

“Rather install a solar geyser first, then gas or an induction stove. Fridges are a problem; it will cost less to buy a new (energy-efficient) fridge and solar panels than it will to power your old fridge with solar,” he says.

Martin adds that you could recoup the costs of converting a home to solar power within six years.

However, living entirely off the grid – that is, by generating all of your own electricity, without ever having to rely on Eskom – is ill-advised, as installing such a system would be unjustifiably expensive.

“The system will require a battery back-up, which is large enough to give autonomy of close to five days of little to no sunshine. The battery storage is expensive, and it also increases the maintenance cost. Unless in very remote areas with no local grid supply, off-grid systems should be avoided,” adds Elmond Khoza from Hudu Engineered Solar Power Solutions.

hether it’s the super-fast Bugatti Veyron, the majestic Rolls Royce Phantom or the ever-so-spacious

Range Rover Supercharge, nothing speaks opulence quite like an exotic/luxury car. For most men (and many women), it is a lifelong desire to get behind the wheel of an exorbitantly priced motor vehicle fit for fictional characters like James Bond and Iron Man.

Whereas most automobiles are designed with function and affordability in mind, these cars are focused on performance and comfort – not to mention the fact that they are known to turn the occasional head.

That being said, most people will never drive an exotic/luxury car (even if they can afford one), because they are not particularly good investments. Their value depreciates from the minute they are driven off the showroom floor, so it is understandable that the six-figure price tag will still deter even the most financially secure.

Herein comes the leasing argument. Leasing allows you to drive a vehicle at a fraction of the cost of buying one. Because it involves using the car only for a fixed period – often two or three years, or as long as five or six years – payments effectively go towards paying for the depreciation in the vehicle, and not its ownership.

“By leasing, you are able to shift the risk of owning your car, its residual value and its eventual sale across to a bank. Instead of owning your car and assuming full responsibility for the cost of buying, running, maintaining and selling it, the leasing option offers you a simple ‘one-stop shop’ process,” writes Russel Smit on the Standard Bank blog.

The same principles can be applied to exotic/luxury cars to make them accessible to more people. Because, when leasing, your deposit and monthly installments are typically lower than for a car that is purchased outright. The cost of operating your vehicle becomes easier to manage. Also, if you’re self-employed or you own a business, you can write off your lease as a business expense.

But leasing isn’t for everybody. Lease contracts include limits on kilometres – commonly 20 000km

annually – and, if excee ded, you’ll be charged a per kilometre rate. This should be fine for exotic/luxury cars, because you wouldn’t typically use a Lamborghini for day-to-day activities, such as grocery-shopping; nor would you go on a road trip in one. So if you know you will stay within the limits, leasing is a safe bet. Otherwise, prepare to pay tens of thousands of rands in fees at the end of the lease term.

The inconvenience of having to “budget” your kilometers can be a little frustrating, though. Even if you do a good job of budgeting your mileage and stay under your yearly allotment, you still don’t get any credit for the kilometers you didn’t put on the car.

Another potential downside to the lease is that, once in effect, the lease contract doesn’t change. If you have an accident, for example, and the vehicle is written off, you’ll still be responsible for paying back the full lease contract amount. Even if the insurance company gives you back less than you owe to the dealership, you’ll be responsible for the full amount. You can’t pull out of the lease before the term expires, as doing so always involves a hefty early-termination fee.

Leasing a car also means that you can’t modify it as you’d be able to if you’d bought it (for example adding a custom paint job or spoiler). Also, because the car is technically owned by the dealership, you can’t claim it as an asset.

Finally, and perhaps the most obvious, is the fact that you don’t own anything once the lease term is over. And if you decide to take the option to buy the car at the end of the lease term, you’ll have paid much more than the cost of the car had you bought it in the first place.

Leasing a sports car doesn’t differ from leasing any other vehicle, and you are still offered flexible leasing options that are tailored to your requirements. So whether you have a need for speed or simply wish to impress those around you with a spectacular sports car, contract hire and leasing can offer you an affordable way to make it happen.

CALLING ALL CLOSET RACE CAR DRIVERSHave you ever fancied yourself a closet race car driver? With the Aston Martin V8 Vantage N430, you can experience racetrack driving on your everyday drive to work.

The powerful GT-4-inspired N430 prowls the streets with a purposeful package of dark-themed exterior details – from graphite painted forged alloy wheels alongside a black front grille, to textured tailpipe finishers and clear rear lamps with black surrounds, every element of the N430 conveys the appropriate air of menace and excitement. The interiors, too, have unmistakable sporting associations, with black magnesium paddle-shifts, black anodised rotaries, and contemporary driver instrument panel; beautifully offset by state-of-the-art technology in the form of a 1 000W Bang & Olufsen BeoSound audio system with ICEpower technology. And that’s just the start.

Available in coupe or roadster form, the Vantage boasts a power hike to 436PS at 7 300rpm that brings its output up to that of the spirited V8 Vantage S. Not to mention that the N430 hits a top speed of 305km/h, and can breeze from 0 to 100km/h in 4,6 seconds. www.daytona.co.za

Reflecting the gracious lifestyle of the 1920s, Audacia Manor is one of Durban’s historical structures. Built by the Chapman family in 1928, it remains a prime example of the Arts and Crafts Movement founded by poet, artist and architect William Morris. The movement rejected the mass-produced Victorian opulence and advocated simplicity, craftsmanship and good design.

In 2006, after new owners restored the house to incorporate the functional requirements of a hotel, Audacia Manor opened its doors to the warm Durban sun and welcomed guests. A year later and in harmony with the William Morris design, the Coach House was completed to meet the growing need for guest accommodation.

In 2010 modern amenities were installed, and this

year Audacia Manor’s restaurant, Eleven opened its doors, allowing guests to enjoy their cuisine that is complemented by the panoramic views of Durban.

The Audacia Manor has a weekend special: R1 895 per room per night. The offer includes breakfast for two, two sky tickets for the Moses Madiba stadium, and rental bicycles for two to enjoy a ride on the Durban beachfront.

Terms and conditions: A minimum stay of two nights, the special is valid from Friday to Sunday, subject to availability and this rate expires on the 1 December 2014.
