WELCOME TO THE FIRST EVER SOURCEBMX SUMMER CATALOGUEWe’ve made a catalogue for the past 5 Christmas’s but by popular demand we’ve released a summer version. When we thought about it Summer is always the best time to Ride so it made perfect

sense and we should have done it years ago.

This catalogue is our biggest yet at 72 pages and includes the hottest products - most of the 2012 bikes and parts in this catalogue have not been released online yet and we thank the brands we believe in and work with for making them available to us first - often having to shoot photos on the other side of the world especially for these pages. The rest of the photos have been shot by us in our

makeshift studio in front of our vert wall whilst we’ve worked tirelessly to design it from the ground up in-house. It’s definitely not been as easy as our winter catalogues as we write this whilst everyone else is out riding in the glorious evening sunshine!

We think it’s worth it though….

It has been a sweet year for riding so far with a trip to Barcelona, an awesome Ride contest in our bowl and more days of Spring sunshine than you could ever hope for. We’ve even been moaning about how the trails are too dry! Long may it continue as we’re busy filming for our 3rd DVD, Normal, which will be released this October. So many plans are in the pipeline it’s going to be an exciting summer…..keep an eye on our website for the latest goings-on. We’ve been working hard on sourcing all the best

BMX products for this catalogue and backing it up with massive stocks so we can bring you the best service possible. We’ve also increased the range of free gifts that are available with all orders over £50 and taken on team-rider, Ben Bishop, as an extra

ABOUT US: Everyone who works here at The Source lives, breathes and rides BMX. When you call, email or order online, you are dealing with riders who understand BMX and care for the products that we sell. From our Hastings base, in a 4000ft converted

church, we maintain the website with the latest BMX products, produce this catalogue, process your order and despatch orders promptly. Over 90% of orders received are shipped the same day (excluding weekends of course) and it’s fairly standard that customers ordering by lunchtime receive their order the next day. Custom built wheels and bikes take a few days longer but these things can’t be rushed! We even email a one-hour time-slot on the day of your delivery

so you don’t have to wait in.

BMX BIKES EXPLAINEDBikes explained? If you’ve been riding for a while then read no further. However, if you’re new to BMX or you’re thinking of buying a bike for your child then we’ve tried to explain all the main parts of a BMX to make your decisions easier. This article is here to help you to decide what bike will suit your, or your child’s needs. All of these parts are 100% upgradeable at a later date on every bike we sell.

1.The Frame. All bikes start with the frame. Entry to intermediate level bikes use hi-tensile steel tubing but look for 4130 cromoly for increased durability and less weight on higher level bikes. See the guide below for sizing info.

2.Forks. The same principle as the frame with regards to material. Look for CNC’d steerer tubes for greater durability and tapered legs for weight savings and a cleaner look.

3.Handlebars, or just ‘bars’. Same principal for materials – 4130 is best and multi-butted tubing saves even more weight. The size is a personal preference with ‘rise’ referring to how high they are.

4.Headset. There are 2 types. Aheadsets are the older type with external cups whilst integrated headsets have sealed bearings that sit inside the frame itself. Integrated headsets save weight, look better and last longer.

5.Brakes. Some riders use them and some don’t. If you’re new to BMX or live on top of a hill then use a back brake! All of our complete bikes are sold with brakes whilst higher-end bikes come with removable brakes that can easily be removed/installed.

6.Front Hub. Look for sealed bearings here; they’ll last longer.

7.Rear Hub. There are two main types. A freewheel hub (13 tooth or larger) and the more reliable and responsive cassette hub. Cassette hubs come with smaller gearings (typically 9t) and are found on most decent bikes these days. Semi-sealed cassette hubs are good whilst sealed is better and a branded after-market hub even better still.

8. Gearing. The relation between the front and rear freewheel or cassette hub. The smaller the sprockets are, the more weight is saved and the more clearance there is when riding ramps or grinding. A 25-9t is considered the best on complete bikes.

9.Rims. The outside of the wheel. These come in single or double wall versions. Double wall is strongest.

10.Tyres. Usually wider on the front than on the back though many bikes now come with a fat rear tyre also. Branded after-market tyres are best here.

11.Cranks and BB. Cranks take a lot of abuse on a bike and need to be strong enough to match your level of riding. Tubular cranks are best whilst branded cranks are better still.

There are 3 types of Bottom Bracket (BB). U.S are the largest and normally come with unsealed bearings. Smaller Mid or Spanish BB’s are sealed and last ages longer.

12. Pedals. Most bikes come with plastic pedals now; branded versions tend to be the best. Alloy pedals last longer and grip better but hurt your shins more when your slip.

13. Seats. There are 3 types of seat. Railed or combo seats are found on the entry level bikes whilst pivitol seats are found on intermediate to pro bikes. Pivitol seats are easier to install/adjust and save weight.

14. Stem. The bit that holds your bars to the forks. All stems are comparable in strength but CNC’d versions are lighter and offer a much cleaner look.

BMX FRAMESBMX’s are small because they’re designed for jumping and tricks so are built to be ultra-responsive and to take some abuse. The standard size of a BMX wheel is 20”. If you taller than 4’10” then this is what you will need; much shorter and you’ll need to consider a BMX with either 16” or 18” wheels.

The frame size on a BMX bike is determined by the length of the top tube. The size of the frame you need is depends on your height and personal preference but to give you a rough idea, see the chart to the left. The other measurements and geometry of a frame affect the way the bike handles. We’ve explained the main measurements and angles to the left and have listed them on each complete bike and frame we sell.

FRAME SIZING

TT – The length of the Top Tube is what all BMX bikes and frames are measured by. A longer top tube will make the handling of the bike more stable and give the taller rider more room. A shorter top tube will make the bike more responsive. Getting the wrong size bike or frame will hinder your riding and comfort.

CS – Chain Stay is essentially the length of the rear end of the bike. A shorter CS length will make the bike more responsive and a longer one more stable.

HT – Head Tube angle determines the angle of your forks. A steeper HT (i.e. 75) will make the bike turn quicker than a mellower angle (i.e.74).

ST – Seat Tube angles don’t vary too much (around 71) and affect the centre of gravity. The steeper the angle the shorter your bike will feel.

SO – StandOver height is essentially how high your frame is. A frame with a low standover height is more responsive and easier to ‘throw around’ whilst a high SO height is more stable; particularly useful when going fast.

SOURCEBMX BIKE IN A BOX SERVICEAll of our bikes come 90% assembled from the factory, which means that they require some assembly with a basic toolkit. This includes fitting the front wheel, bars, seat and brakes. It normally takes around 30 minutes to an hour.We also offer a service where we fully assemble and check over your bike for you before packing it off by courier in a custom Source BMX box.

When it arrives all you need to do is follow these basic steps: (tools provided)

A. Pull the bike out of the box and locate the tool kit and pedals.

B. Turn the bars straight and tighten the two allen key bolts on the stem.

C. Screw the pedals in (making sure to check left and right) and tighten.

This unique service costs £14.99 and you can order it with your new bike either online or over the phone.

RIDING WAS THE PURPOSE OF THIS TRIP. It sounds almost so obvious that a group of BMXers going on a trip would be all about BMX but you will be surprised how wrong it can go. This trip consisted of a tight crew pulled mainly from the youth of the team with the exception of Wildcat who is literally fifty and borrowing his Dad’s ipod for the trip again (Wildcat is actually only 24 in real years). The Youth however managed to keep the Wildcat out of the deep deep depression he can find himself in; especially after sitting out a cold cold winter, as was the case in this early April trip.

In true Source style the trip was all very last minute, the heavy burden on Wildcats mind from a bitter winter inspired him and myself to lobby the accounts department of the Source to release the funds necessary for a few Easyjet budget flights and a dingy six bed dorm off the Gran Via in downtown Barcelona. By ‘accounts department’ we mean Richard - my brother and the other owner of the Source - the slightly older one with the business degree which we trust with the money, it’s all very simple really we just fill his mind with promise of footage and photos of a quality good enough to print and assure him that we will in no way whatsoever invite Mark Tanner or Rob Castle this time which is always the deal clincher as he knows that we have a fighting chance of getting out of our dwellings before dusk.

We didn’t know it at the time but the “come on Rich we’ve got to do this - we need the footage”, “we’re only going to take the motivated youth”, “it can’t really go wrong in Barcelona - it’s always sunny” quotes actually turned out not be a lie and shit went down.

With all the pent up motivation to ride which had manifested itself over the winter months, it was pretty easy to see from day one that we were not going to have a problem getting up in the mornings and making the most of our days down in the Mediterranean. Everyone was up and out on the steeds by mid morning to jump on the Metro, travel as far away as we could go and ride our way back to the centre by midnight - a plan motived by Wildcat’s 20 page spot dossier, which he knocked up before we left.

Trips are always the best and so much better when the weather is good and the crew is fresh. So big shout out to Wildcat, Ben Bishop, Josh Heritage and Chris Wiseman for the great time and to the now shattered soul of Toby Shaw who came along to shoot the photos. Thanks -

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVEN’T A CLUE: A game of ride is a game which has been playing out amongst BMXers for a long time now. Think copy a trick or the Basketball game of H.O.R.S.E. The format is really very simple and involves two riders in a one-on-one duel where the first rider sets a trick for the second rider to copy - if the second rider fails to pull the trick first time then he is awarded a letter and so on. The game ends when one rider spells the word R.I.D.E.

WHAT WENT DOWN: On April 9th we hosted the first ever UK game of RIDE. 18 of the UK’s finest ramp riders were invited along for a chance to compete in our bowl. You can view the videos on our site and at http://rideukbmx.mpora.com/tag/GOR/ - you’ll see for yourself that the riding was sick and everyone had a good day down in Hastings. The afterparty with free bar wasn’t bad either!

JASON CAME DOWN TO VISIT the Source for a weekend back in April. Here at Sourcebmx we were pretty excited to see Jason ride the bowl for the weekend and hang out as we all know how much of a badass he is on a bike - just take a look on the internet to see the content he has put out over the past few years - the guy is not scared that is for sure.

Jason came down to shoot a few photos with Ricky Adam of Dig fame, no swanky hotels and pro treatment here, just sharing a sofa at my house - a Northern Irishman and

an Irishman sharing a sofa - if that’s not progress I don’t know what is. Jason pulled some big moves off in the bowl with the help of his sidekick mannequin (random?) and then came and hung out with us to sample the Hastings nightlife which included a random encounter with a hen night... where Jason promptly earned himself all of the “worst chat up line” awards - ha - you have to love that hen night banter.

I don’t claim to know Jason that well but it’s apparent to me that he is rad on a bike a damn nice dude and you can’t help to like a guy like that. - Marc.

Describe yourself: I’m a fun loving guy who’s always up for a laugh whether it’s going for a ride, having a party or just generally going out causing mischief.

You happened to be in Hastings for a couple of weekends lately - how was that? It was a real good laugh but the beach has no sand so I couldn’t build a sandcastle. I also got to ride with a sound kid up at the outdoor park who was feckin killing it I forgot his name but he looks like Kriss Kyle. I’d like to go down again at some stage maybe do a pub jam or something.

How did you find the Source Bowl? The source bowl is so fun to ride and skate it’s such a fun place to get a good session going with your friends and it’s only a two min walk to the pub which is always a bonus.

I hear you have a signature frame coming out with WTP. Can you tell us about that? Yeah im really psyched on it, it’s the strongest frame I’ve ridden in years and it’s real nice to ride, it comes in 20.9 and 20.45 top tubes and a 13.2” back end, it’s also nice and high so it’s easier for barspins and all the other trendy tricks. I’m also real happy with the stickers, to me they’re a lot different to what you normally get, I’ve never seen a sticker of a drunken bum on the side of a bike and a bird sitting on a bottle of beer.

What’s your involvement with PubBMX? I think I own it but it’s more of a friends thing. I just wanted to start something that’s a good laugh that people can buzz off, I also want people to be comfy so I use the best t-shirts from american apparel to continental.

36.0 No hand over the spine?

WITH MEGATOUR ONLY BEING ONE WEEK LONG,

most of the BSD team decided to fly out to Texas

early to take advantage of the good weather and

make the most of being able to ride the BMX

mecca that is Austin. For many of the crew this

was their first time together, Tony had never

met the quiet Frenchman, Antony Lille and in

total contrast everyone else was just about to

meet the loudest American ever, Reed ‘Giraffic’

Stark.

Austin is known as a winter destination for

many riders and loads of our friends were

already there. Gogo and Niki Croft were over

from the UK, Pierre Blondel and Poulain from

France, Angie Marino and Schnell from the US

and also ex-pat Austin residents, Sandy Carson

and Mutiny owner Gaz Sanders. That first week

we rode every day, from street to trails to ramps,

there was never a shortage of places to ride as

well as good places to eat and party. Austin has

it all.

...DALLAS ON THE OTHER HAND.could not have offered more of a contrast. At the beginning of filming on day two, Mike ‘Jersey’ Taylor rolled his ankle. This was the start of a run of bad luck in Dallas which ended with a police escort out of the city. If you saw the BSD article in Ride UK then you’ve already read about all the drama, so I’ll take over from where Tony Malouf left off...

As Jersey was hurt we’d arranged for Chris Brown to fly in from LA to Austin later that day and with Stew Johnson at the wheel that’s where we were headed. There were plans to ride in some other cities but after checking out Stew’s secret spot map it was decided we’d rather stay in Austin as there definitely was more than enough good stuff to keep everyone occupied.

As you might know from watching him ride, Mike Taylor is hard as nails (and I don’t mean fellow BSD rider Nailz), his foot was in a bad way but he was already plotting ways of getting fit to ride again quickly. I could see he was itching to get on his bike as he sat watching stuff happen at spots, he clearly had his own ideas of what he would’ve been pulling if his ankle wasn’t bust! True to form, only two days after his injury he had his ankle strapped up and for his first move busted out a manual to huge rail first go. He said he was “just doing himself a favour” as he couldn’t afford to crash it.

Winter has a whole different meaning in Austin Texas compared to the UK, the temperature was about 25°C every day, perfect for riding and afterhours partying. So in turn, most days of riding were also followed by a night out of sorts. As both the BSD and FBM teams were in town, Crandall decided to throw a BBQ at T1. FBM supplied the food and BSD brought the drinks to what was a chilled night of bikes, boards and beers with good friends at an amazing ramp. That night Kriss Kyle found out what FBM really stood for after seeing a semi-drunk Steve Crandall pouring out a beer under the ramp, Four Beers Maximum!

THE BBQ.was one of the good things about the FBM team being in Austin at the same time, but there was also a bit of a downside. They’d been eavesdropping on our conversations when we were planning on where to film and would regularly turn up at our spots an hour later, sneaky...

On the second last day Anto had a crazy church roof drop to rail manual planned but things didn’t go to plan and he ended up pretty hurt after getting really close to pulling it. At the next spot it looked like Chris Brown had a rail ride to pavement gap in the bag, but he clipped the curb on the way over and hit his head pretty bad. I thought that was going to be it for the day but it didn’t stop the rest of the guys, the spot (see Reed’s footjam photo) and weather was just too good to waste. In usual Austin style there was another party to go to, this time Daryll Nau had organised the Megatour party with free beer and three bands headlined by Japanther and also including Tia Carrera. Many of the local BMX community showed up that night and there were a lot of crazy antics going on, most were related to the rucksack full of mousetraps that FBM’s Eric Hennessy had smuggled into the bar. The bartenders were not digging one dollar tips with mousetraps hidden inside.

BSD rider Dan Paley arrived in Austin just in time for the last day of the trip and witnessed some of the best moves going down. Even after a late night everyone was ready to ride and Chris Brown started the day off with a crazy feeble down a big rail on his first try. That rail was a good start to another good day of riding, which went from street to the T1 ramp and ended up with all the teams meeting at 9th street for a mellow trails session with pizza for the end of Megatour.

After the sun went down we headed back to Stew’s house to pack our bags and have beers with the remaining FBM guys. As we sat around, someone decided it would be a good idea to put the Anthem II DVD on and we were treated to an impromptu viewing with live commentary from the filmer/editor/director Stew Johnson, you can’t buy that sh*t.

All of the sprockets you see below come in various sizes which can be a little confusing if you don’t know what you’re do-ing. The size of a sprocket and driver (see the hub page) relates to the number of teeth the sprocket has and therefore the size. We have therefore listed the

popular gear ratios below which work out at the same gearing... not too hard to pedal and not too easy - just right! If you prefer a harder gearing you can always up the front sprocket or reduce the driver or vice versa i.e a 28t - 9t would be a little harder but faster than the regular 25t - 9t.
