Hello everyone!

the new members of the team – Luis de la

Vega, Adrian Coates, Danijela Mirosa, Ryan

Gunasekara and Tania Zivkovic.

The SRC team this term is working

see the benefits through increased student

communication and feedback, and sourcing

of student input in activities. I encourage

you to keep letting the school and the SRC

know of your thoughts, as we can only

represent the student body effectively with

your help.

Upcoming Events at MBSMBS - AGSM CupIt’s on again, the gloves are off, and this time we are serious....

The annual bout with the northerners will include a debate, sporting activities and networking (ie drinking) events on Friday and Saturday night as well as a welcome drinks and canapes in the courtyard on Friday.

The MBS-AGSM cup will run from Friday, March 26 to Sunday 28th of February. Those interested in participating should ge t i n t o u c h w i t h J e n Ba b a i a n [email protected]

Mid-Term DrinksIt’s a hard-fought 6 weeks, so make sure you get out to blow off some steam at the mid-term drinks. It will be held the same weekend as the MBS-AGSM cup, so take the opportunity to meet some out-of-town B. School students and see what

the competition is all about. You could also take one for the team and see if you can Mess them up for Day 2 of the cup, but you didn’t read that in the SouRCe.

MBS BallTime to get out of the suits and “business casual” (or shorts & flip flops if you are a full-timer) & put on some style for the 2010 MBS Ball. This is the must-do event on the MBS Calendar. It’s like the Brownlow Medal dinner, but with a higher GMAT average and possible not quite as tacky. Like the Brownlow, you still might end up leaving the casino at 8am the next day, but the Herald Sun reporter won’t be ther e to take the embar r ass ing photograph.

The MBS Ball will be held on Saturday, April 24. More details will be forthcoming. Watch this space.

End-of-Term PartyAnother “not-to-be-missed” item to put in the calendar. Sure, you will be exhausted from your various exams. We know that your friends and family are making pointed questions about whether of not you have absconded to Bolivia over the last three weeks...

However, the EOTP is a great way to de-stress and another opportunity to mix with all those people you see in the corridors at MBS but haven’t a clue who they are. For some, it will be their final drinks as MBS Students, so it’s also a good place to start networking with freshly minted MBS alums. The drinks will be held on Friday May 7 at the end of exam week.

“Who Is...?”Seen at a recent party... The photo to the left qualifies for our first “Who is...” challenge. The first person to identify the three MBS students in the above photo get the first dance with our fearless President at the MBS Ball. Email us at:

Music ClubMBS Music Club to Put Up the Big Ensemble!

With a view to make MBS life more exuberant and fun, a few of us have recently got together and created this new club called MBS Music Club. Just from the name of it, you get the whole idea. Yes, this one is for all music enthusiasts!

Our members are those who possess music related skills, want to nurture their talents (and, may be, want to make one or two performances at times!), those who are interested in learning some music or enhancing their music skills and, of course, those who simply ENJOY music.

The major goals of the club is to develop a common platform for the MBS students with special interests in music, to bring the talents in music together and facilitate them in nurturing their passion about music, and to make the campus a more fun place for all of us. It also intends to promote cultural exchange through music, and finally, to unite the MBS community through music for any special cause (e.g. recent Haiti earthquake).

The planned activities include (not exhaustively) - accumulating musical talents at MBS and form groups or bands in order to nurture the talents and skills, arranging training sessions for general students who are interested in developing skills in music, organizing periodic musical events or music festivals at school to promote cultural exchange through music

as well as to enhance the ‘quality of life’ of the general students during their studies at MBS (e.g. MBS World Music Festival, MBS Winter Music Festival etc.), and convening special concerts or musical events for special cause (e.g. fund raising campaign, awareness building campaign etc.)

At the moment, MBS Music Club’s primary focus is on signing up the ‘music fanatics’, streamlining some administrative issues, developing a cool website, and, most importantly, gathering the information about all the music talents (to whatever degree it is), and developing a database of the entire music talent pool at MBS. So, hurry up!

For joining the club, simply write to s h a h e d . s m @ s t u d e n t . m b s . e d u o r [email protected].

Club Activities & NewsThere are a whole raft of activities being organised this term by the plethora of clubs at MBS. Below is just a selection of what’s happening in Term 1. Exchange Stories - USC, LAI'd be safe and warm

if I was in L.A

California Dreamin'

on such a winter's day

Los Angeles, just like her name, the city of angel, embraced me with her mild sunshine and beautiful beaches. This is the place that I exchanged to, University of Southern California - Marshall School of Business.

USC Marshall has a very good reputation in its Entrepreneurship concentration among the top American b-schools. The highly developed  Entertainment industry extends from Hollywood to the whole  Los Angeles County (County: an administrative district with several cities and towns) and its neighborhood Orange County. It also nur tures the macro-environment for entrepreneurship and brings a lot of opportunities for new ventures. The most impressive thing is that a great deal of peop le a round me d isp lay the i r entrepreneurial spirit. They are creative,

and passionate to turn their ideas into real business. The founders of Broadcom, Buy.com and Myspace were invited as gues t speaker s i n Ne w Ven tu r e Management class and  I was inspired on their experiences on the new ventures.

The more amazing experience is from my Global Strategy class: I got the chances to have lunch with VP, Country Manager Greater China of Tyson Foods,  and enjoy afternoon tea with  VP of  Hong Kong Disneyland after class. Not only do I learn from them on how they handle the international business, deal with the relationship between the headquarter and the emerging market, but also it helps me set up a good connection extending to different sectors in the location where my future career will be. Plus, the whole class made a field trip to Ensenada, a beach city on the west coast of Mexico. We did some strategic consulting projects for the city, naval, winery and fishfarm, and we didn't forget to enjoy the fish tacos, TECATE, and Margarita made by genuine tequila! :D

I made good friends with local students and international students there. The other exchange students were from Germany, Denmark, Japan and Hongkong shared the different aspects of their b-schools as well. We were pretty close and travelled together in California and to Las Vegas, We didn’t gambled that much but really enjoyed the gorgeous attractions and nice buffets. :) After the term was over, I drove along Highway 1 (which is the American version of “Great Ocean Road”) from Los Angeles to San Francisco, stopped over some small towns with fantastic sceneries and peaceful mind.

There are other wonderful moments in the United States, like thrilling night of Halloween, white Christmas covered by heavy snow, reunion with my MBS classmates in Los Angeles and New York. Every bit of exchange life will be the best memory and unforgettable piece in my MBA study.

Exchange Stories - NYU Stern, NYCI had a whole bunch of reasons for choosing the Stern school of business at NYU. The school’s diverse syllabus and range of student activities was certainly a drawcard, as was its global reputation and ranking. I remember thinking that it would be great studying so close to Wall Street, as if commerce would be in the air and I could somehow learn just by sucking it in. The decisive factor, however, was my fascination with the city itself, and my overwhelming desire to live there some day. New York, a place I had never visited, had occupied my imagination since about the age of five.

The place has a buzz about it. Every inhabitant seems aware that they are somewhere special; somewhere important

things happen. Sure, the people come and go, and genuine social interactions can be difficult to come by, but the importance remains. New York is what happens when you run a magnet around the world attracting as much talent, passion and imagination as you can, and then squeeze it all into a land mass as small as Manhattan. It’s something gritty and dense and beautiful and constantly changing. It made a great backdrop for a semester of MBA study.

Stern itself is a great institution. I felt that the lecturing staff conveyed an incredible passion for the subject material and tended to have a more practical, rather than academic, orientation. It was delightful to be told “here’s how we really do it” by people who really had done it on a massive scale. On the flipside, sometimes I craved a conceptual framework to underpin the advice, and a little more of the discussion on the why that I had grown accustomed to at MBS. It’s all about balance.

Many Stern students seemed interested only in getting a job, even if this came at the expense of grades and learning. This is understandable, I guess, given the impact of the recent financial crisis. One guy in my syndicate explained “I’m interviewing” as an excuse for not turning up to several

classes and syndicate meetings. When I quizzed other students about this lack of focus on class, they told me that (a) being selected to go to Stern at all is enough to get you an interview at most places; and (b) due to Stern’s grading policies, it’s difficult to A and it’s difficult to get a C. The positive implication of this is that students are not competitive, and will readily help each other out.

Overall, I look back on the exchange as a life-changing experience for which I am immensely thankful. I loved living in the West Village and enjoying all of the wonderful dining, arts and entertainment that New York City has to offer. I grew immensely from listening to practical insights from great professors who had made their names in the world’s greatest companies. And I for med last ing relationships with a diverse set of students from around the world.
