What is sound?

● Sound: a form of energy that is a wave of vibrations.

● Vibration: back and forth motion of an object.● Sound travels in waves.

How is sound made?

● As sound waves travel through a material (like air) the molecules vibrate.

● The molecules bump into each other, passing this pattern.

Real Life Example: Vocal chords vibrate when you talk or sing.

These vibrations travel through the air as sound waves.

Sound waves travel in all directions!

That’s why you can hear someone singing behind you!

How sound behaves….

● Sound travels through THREE types of matter. ○ Solids○ Liquids○ gases

● Sound cannot travel through a vacuum! (Like Space)

Why?

What happens when sound hits an object?

● THREE things can happen:○ Reflection

■ The whole sound is bounced off a flat surface. (Concrete)○ Diffusion

■ The sound hits a bumpy surface and the waves are scattered. (Carpet)

○ Absorption ■ The sound waves are taken in by the material and stops

them. (Foam)

What does a sound wave look like?

Pitch

● Compression: the areas where particles are close together.

● The number of compressions that pass by a point is the wave’s FREQUENCY.

● Frequency is a measure of how OFTEN the particles vibrate.

● The greater the frequency the higher the pitch. ● Think: small animals have a higher pitch than large

animals.

Volume

Why are some sounds louder than others?

1. The sound waves of louder objects have more energy. ● **think..when you clap softly, the sound isn’t loud

because you are putting less energy in**

2. It is also where you are!

3. The source is vibrating more, which makes your eardrum vibrate more.

How does does sound and energy transfer?

1. For sound to be heard…..energy must FIRST cause an object to vibrate.

2. Vibrating gives off sound waves in the air. 3. This sound wave energy reaches your eardrum. 4. Your brain then translates it into SOUND.
