• What is the rule that you think makes the emphasis fall on the next to last syllable?
• If a word ends in a vowel, n or s, the next-to-last syllable is the loudest.
What about the following words? Where does the emphasis fall?
• pared
• madrid
• tenedor
• leal
• mudar
• eficaz
What about the following words? Where does the emphasis fall?
• pared
• madrid
• tenedor
• leal
• mudar
• eficaz
• From the examples given, what would you hypothesize is rule governing where the emphasis falls in the words you just examined?
• If a word ends in a consonant other than N or S, the last syllable is the loudest.
What would you hypothesize the accent marks in the following words
tell a speaker to do?
• día
• fácil
• difícil
• rápidamente
• águila
• An accent mark tells you that one of the two rules: ends in vowel, n or s or ends in any other consonant HAS BEEN BROKEN.
• When you pronounce a word differently than the rules say, you write in the accent for a reader.
How do I divide words into syllables to find the loudest syllable?
• The only letters that can start a syllable are letters that can start a word in Spanish normally.
• importante im por tan te• There are no words that begin
with mp or rt or nt. Split these consonant groups.
• a, e, and o are strong vowels and they can stand by themselves.
• leal has to be split le and al.• You cannot have two strong
vowels side by side in the same syllable.
• That leaves i and u as weak vowels that don’t stand alone well. They often blend with a strong vowel, another weak vowel or have an accent in an emphsized syllable.
• buenos bue nos
• siete sie te
• almuerzo al muer zo
• duerme duer me
• colibrí co li brí
The most common pattern in syllables in Spanish is…
• Consonant followed by vowel.
• For example.
• sí la ba
• pa la bra
• co no ce
