We have studied SOUND by answering these questions:

1.- What is sound?

2.- How is sound produced?

3.- How does sound travel?

4.- Can sound travel through liquids?

5.- Can sound travel through solids?

6.- Can sound travel through a vacuum?

7.- Pitch: How can we change pitch?

8.- How do our ears hear?

LOOKING FOR ANSWERS ACROSS EUROPE

Page 4: Sound Experiments

WHAT IS SOUND?This is easy, because we have studied energy and we know that SOUND IS A FORM OF ENERGY.

This energy can break a wine glass.

Page 5: Sound Experiments

HOW IS SOUND PRODUCED?The answer came from:

and

Page 6: Sound Experiments

Experiment 1: SALT DANCER from the Italian team

We cannot see sound but we can see its effects and...

Page 7: Sound Experiments

Experiment 2: HEAR AND FEEL SOUND VIBRATIONS

from the Romanian team

We can feel sound vibrations.

Page 8: Sound Experiments

Experiment 3: SOUND MEANS VIBRATION

From the Romanian team

CONCLUSION: Thanks to the Italians and Romanians we know that SOUND IS PRODUCED WHEN AN OBJECT VIBRATES.

Page 9: Sound Experiments

HOW DOES SOUND TRAVEL?

The answer came from:

Page 10: Sound Experiments

Experiment 4: SOUND GUN from the Slovakian team

CONCLUSION: Thanks to the Slovakian team we know that SOUND TRAVELS AS SOUND WAVES.

Page 11: Sound Experiments

CAN SOUND TRAVEL THROUGH LIQUIDS?

The answer came from:

Page 12: Sound Experiments

Experiment 5: MAKE A HYDROPHONE from the Italian team

CONCLUSION: Thanks to the Italian team we know that SOUND CAN TRAVEL THROUGH LIQUIDS.

Page 13: Sound Experiments

The answer came from:

CAN SOUND TRAVEL THROUGH SOLIDS?

and

Page 14: Sound Experiments

Experiment 6: RINGING SPOON from the French team

Now we know that sound can travel through solids

Page 15: Sound Experiments

Experiment 7: TABLE THUNDER from the Italian team

CONCLUSION: Thanks to the Italian and French teams we know that SOUND TRAVELS THROUGH SOLIDS BETTER THAN THROUGH AIR.

Page 16: Sound Experiments

CAN SOUND TRAVEL THROUGH A VACUUM?

The answer came from:

Page 17: Sound Experiments

Experiment 8: IS THERE ANY SOUND WITHOUT AIR?

from the Italian team

CONCLUSION: Thanks to the Italian team we know that SOUND NEEDS MATTER TO TRAVEL THROUGH.

When the jar is full of air, I

can hear the

mobile phone.

When the jar hasn`t got

any air in it, I cannot hear

the mobile phone.

HOW CAN WE CHANGE THE PITCH OF A SOUND?

The answer came from:

and

Page 19: Sound Experiments

Experiment 9: INVESTIGATING SOUND from the Scottish team

When we blow, each test tube produces a different pitched sound.

Page 20: Sound Experiments

Experiment 9: WHISTLING TUBE from the French team

At different speeds, the pitch is different too.

Different lengths produce different pitched sounds.

Page 21: Sound Experiments

Experiment 10: GLASS XYLOPHONE MADE OF GLASS CUPS from the Slovenian team

The wine glass with most water has the lowest pitch and the wine glass with least water has the highest pitch.

CONCLUSION: Thanks to the Scottish, French and Slovenian teams we know that THE PITCH OF A SOUND DEPENDS ON THE NUMBER OF VIBRATIONS.

Page 22: Sound Experiments

HOW DO OUR EARS HEAR?The answer came from:

Page 23: Sound Experiments

Experiment 12: AMAZING DANCE from the Romanian team

The elastic band behaves as our vocal cords do. When they vibrate, this vibration travels through the particles of the air and it reaches our eardrum.

CONCLUSION: Thanks to the Romanian team we know that THE VIBRATION PRODUCED BY A SOUND MAKES OUR EARDRUM VIBRATE AND THIS VIBRATION REACHES THE AUDITORY NERVE WHICH CARRIES THE INFORMATION TO OUR BRAIN.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR HELPING

US TO LEARN SO MANY THINGS ABOUT SOUND
