EDMONDS SENIOR CENTER

STAFF

2019 ACHIEVEMENTSMuch was accomplished in 2019 that we are very proud of. A year ago in my message we resolved and pledged: “It is the intention of the Edmonds Senior Center, both by its Board and staff , to ensure that all, or nearly all, of our regu-lar programs continue through our transition year while the Edmonds Waterfront Center (EWC) is being built.” We accom-plished this transition goal 100% - 16 alternate locations were found for every one of our programs. Community support for the Center has been tremendous. Many churches made their large and smaller rooms avail-able, the Mountlake Terrace Senior Center hosts evening events and regular programs including our weekly Bastyr Clinic, and the City made space avail-able both at City Hall and the Frances Anderson Center. The move took longer than anticipated, but was completed by mid-June. The Thrift Store went fi rst, opening in January in its new Westgate location. Most of the programs were relocated in April and May and a few, including our weekly lunch program sponsored by Homage Senior Services, moved in early June. Our admin offi ce moved to The Hotel Group in mid-June. They have been most welcoming and the space suits us well. Our members and partici-pants have adapted well to the new locations, which in many ways are superi-or to the old building, particularly in its last months, when it was obvious how much we needed a new building. Both our annual gala auction in May at the Museum of Historic Flight in Mukilteo and third annual Community Breakfast in October were the most successful ever. Each raised more than they ever have and were spirited, de-lightful events. We used the Breakfast to make three major announcements: our choice of caterers for EWC – Shubert Ho and his team of Feed Me Hospital-ity, the Veteran’s behavioral health program spear-headed by Mike Schindler and his Operation Military Families Cares organization, and our decision to build the EWC 100% electric (no fossil fuels in the building). There was tremen-dous interest and support for all of these.

EDMONDS WATERFRONT CENTER PROGRESSA number of major milestones of the EWC project were achieved in 2019. The fi rst and foremost was that we broke ground in early July. The offi cial ceremo-ny was attended by over 100 Edmonds residents and marked the true begin-ning of what has been a dream for many years. The old building was fully de-molished on August 1. On Sept 10 a native blessing and purifi cation ceremony was performed by Chief William Depoe of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. It was a powerful and moving ceremony. September 23 marked the completion of the foundation – 110 augur cast piles ranging from 40 ft to 55 ft in depth. The new building will have level fl oors that will stay level! By early December the structural slab was laid, and steel supports began to rise.

OUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION AND PLEDGE TO ALLThe New Year’s Resolution of the Edmonds Senior Center, both by its Board and staff , is to ensure that the building and the capital campaign to support it, are complete by September 2020. To accomplish this, we will need the sup-port of the whole community including each of you. As Rick Steves has often said, every single person can fi nd a way to give. It may not be money, but it can be time, energy, making a connection, telling people about the project, etc. Please call if you want to become involved.

MY RETIREMENT ON SEPTEMBER 30, 2020On a personal note, the Board has extended my contract to the end of Sep-tember 2020. I had planned to retire at the end of this year, but was persuaded to stay until the new building is completed. When I came in 2001 I had no sense that I would be here so long. It has been the kindness and generosity of the people, both our members and others in the community that have en-couraged me to stay. Edmonds is a unique community with a special spirit of community and place. The new Edmonds Waterfront Center is both an expres-sion of that spirit and will be a means to strengthen and deepen it. The best of everything in the New Year to you all.

LET’S ALL WATCH SESAME STREET

I think it’s a fair statement that we need to be concerned about the degradation of public discourse which we read and hear almost daily. At a small gathering in Edmonds not too long ago, Senator Maria Cantwell off ered some very good advice: “We need to stop talking at each other and start talking to each other.” Something needs to be done. Changes are often best made at a local level and we have an invaluable opportunity with our project to build the Edmonds Waterfront Center. As we have said and written often, our longstanding and well received programs and activities will be up and running when the doors open. In addition, we will see a range of intergenerational programs and activities, designed to allow us to have meaningful engagement with participants outside of our normal lives. A core element of many of these will involve participants of all ages doing things together. When engaged with each other in joint activities, we can fi nd mutual benefi t by a shared experience with people with whom we have not had a previous shared experience or common life experiences. We broaden our per-spectives and importantly, can fi nd ourselves less judgmental of those with whom we do not normally identify.

What does Sesame Street have to do with this? A good question. In addition to the obvious learning tools off ered by the program - singing the ABC’s, etc.- a subtext was dealing with relationships, ethics and emotions. And a common theme was kindness. It snuck up on many of us and we likely didn’t catch these “side benefi ts” at fi rst, eventually catching on that they were actually the “real benefi ts.” Author Robert Fulghum was more direct in his best-selling book “All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten” (1986). Fulghum listed lessons normally learned in American kindergarten classrooms and explains how the world would be improved if adults adhered to the same basic rules, i.e. sharing, being kind to one another, and living a “balanced life” of work, play and learning. I’m not trying to take on the role of Fulghum, or even Mr. Rogers here and admonish us. Rather, I’m off ering the thought that as we confront the deterioration of dialogue among us, we can benefi t by opportunities that will aff ord us the experiences to see each other better and discourage us from stereotyping and memes. It can be an uphill battle at times. Witness the speed at which “Ok Boomer” caught on, promulgated by some young people, upset feeling that Boomers have left them with inaction on climate change. I wonder if the youth who have participated in our “Trivia Night” programs at The Red Twig agree with “Ok Boomer.” All teams were mixes of young and old, some questions designed to favor one age group and others favored the opposite group. The sustained laughter and smiles at these events illustrated that participants walked away with new insights into each other. I don’t wish to single out youth here as there are innumerable similar examples in which short, punchy lines are being used by one group against another. The basic thrust here is the Edmonds Waterfront Center will aff ord us opportunities to extend the known benefi ts of socialization to a much broader group of people. We are blessed with a wonderful community here in Edmonds, and we can play a role in ensuring that we sustain that which makes it the place we call home.

I would like to close on a personal note, as in mid-January I will hand the gavel to our new board president. These past two and a half years have been a rewarding experience, made all the more so because of the caliber of my fellow board mem-bers, our Executive Director who is second to none, a strong staff , and a seemingly endless group of volunteers who contribute a lot, smile a lot, and make a diff erence. And fi nally, a thanks to all who participate in our programs and activities, singing, dancing, carving, you name it – the energy and enthusiasm is impressive and infec-tious. Your support of our programs, and support for our capital campaign to make the Edmonds Waterfront Center a reality is deeply appreciated. My heartfelt thanks to all.

Edmonds Senior Center - Connecting & Enriching Our Community

UPDATE ON THE EDMONDS WATERFRONT CENTER

Alma’s NotesJANUARY/FEBRUARY 2020

I hope you all had a good time during the holidays. 2020 will be an exciting year.

Have you been to the EWC Construction area, recently? You can see the smooth, solid fl oors. I bet there will be no more wavy fl oors. The fi rst steel delivery was made on December 04. They hope to have the outer walls up by February. Wouldn’t it be fun to take tours during the construction? Check the new website for construction updates. www.EdmondsWaterfrontCenter.org

The election for the ESC Board Members was held in November. I was sorry for the people who asked me what they needed to do to be able to vote. I said, “Simple be a member and you will be able to vote for Board Members in the Fall.”

The election results were accepted by the Board in December. The newly elected Board members will be installed on Janu-ary 8, 3:00 at City Hall. The new offi cers will also be elected and installed. If you would like to know who the new BOD members and offi cers are, come and be part of the celebration. The outgoing Board members will also be honored.

The December Community Breakfast was cancelled due to a scheduling glitch. The Food Bank Toy Shop at the United Meth-odist Church was taking place the following Saturday and they had to get ready for it. We must bear in mind that Church functions take precedence over other programs. The Community Breakfast will continue every fi rst Friday of the month until June. The cooks go on a break during July and August –watch and see where we’ll be in September.

Your complementary purple 2019 ticket will still be accepted at the January breakfast. Your 2020 blue ticket will also be accepted. You received a complementary ticket with your membership card, when you registered for 2020. The cost of breakfast is $5 – what a deal!

Have you stopped by the Thrift Store at Westgate? Shop at the Bonus Monday Special, Special Promotions, and new items, all the time. It’s a good place to shop for your Valentine celebration.

I hope you were able to go on your desired special trip. I was too late to sign up for the trip to the Burke Museum. Angel told me the waiting list was long enough for two more buses. Look at the top of the TRIPS page for sign-up days and times.

I was sorry to hear of Alice Day’s passing. She was 103 and 2/3 years young. It was always fun to see her exercise, laugh, and share her many experiences. I loved it when she said she was born underground.

“OUT OF NEW ORLEANS” ~ by Steve ForsytheI became acquainted with Wayne in 2005 after he evacuated from Hurricane Katrina-ravaged New Orleans. He told me that he thought he and his wife were safe after the daytime storm had passed, only to be awakened at night to the sound of fur-niture bumping the walls as it fl oated about the fi rst fl oor. Wayne and other evacuees had heard explosions earlier and were convinced the city or the Corps of Engineers were blowing up levees protecting low-lying areas where he and other African Americans lived. This meant they took the brunt of the fl ooding while other, more affl uent areas, were fl ood free. Wayne and his wife escaped through a second story window into a boat and were taken to the Superdome where an estimated 30,000 people quickly overwhelmed the food and sanitation situation. They suff ered for days in the sweltering 90-degree humidity due to loss of power. Wayne often said it was “hell on earth.” Once, through tears, he told me he saw a woman drown herself and her three children before anyone could stop her.“Not too damned many people even tried to stop her,” he said.Eventually, Wayne, his wife, and several other evacuees ended up in my small town in Oklahoma where our church “adopted” them. I became Wayne’s friend and now, every hurricane season, I am reminded of him and his trials by water.Join our Writers Group on Fridays. Links Between Diet and Brain Health

An important new study released in London conclusively links diet and Alzheimer’s disease, providing even more evidence that you can protect your brain by watching what you eat. At the recent Alzheimer Association’s International Conference in the U.K, researchers revealed that following either a heart-healthy Mediterranean diet or its close cousin, the MIND diet (see details below), can reduce future cognitive impairment by up to 35 percent. The study’s results, says Maria Carrillo, chief science offi cer at the Alzheimer’s Association, show the positive eff ects of improving nutrition even a bit.

1. Whole grains: Eat at least three servings a day of things like whole wheat, oats and brown rice. 2. Leafy green vegetables: The MIND diet kicks the veggie requirement up a notch from the Mediterranean plan, recommending a salad plus one other vegetable every day. 3. Wine: You get a glass a day, though you are instructed to have the glass during dinner.4. Nuts: Opt for about a handful of unsalted almonds, hazelnuts or walnuts, varieties that McEvoy notes are especially high in fi ber, vitamins and the omega-3 fatty acids that some have hypothesized fi ght the infl ammation that may compromise brain health. 5. Fish: You should eat omega-3-rich catch once a week, or possibly more. 6. Berries: Two servings a week; blueberries in particular are strongly recommended. They’re high in a particular polyphenol [an antioxidant] that’s been linked to a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s in cardiovascular literature.7. Olive oil: As with the Mediterranean diet, olive oil is the approved fat. In fact, you’re supposed to use less than a tablespoon of butter or margarine a day.8. Cheese: recommends very little cheese, it goes very light on Swiss and cheddar. Whole-fat cheese shares a spot on the “un-healthy” list, along with fried or fast food and sweets. You are also allowed less than a serving a week of red meat. 9. Beans: eat them every other day.

If you would like more information please contact Michelle Reitan, MSW, by phone 425.774.5555 ext 105 or by email [email protected]

SOCIAL WORKER’S COLUMN

In a recent Seattle Times article (November 14, 2019), Seattle was rated as “The Gloomiest City” in the nation. Portland followed at a close second place. The rankings only considered large cities, so this excluded our northern neighbors in Alaska. A data team at “Best Places” tried to quantify this subjective pronouncement with scientifi c fi ndings based on percentage of cloud cover, average hours of daylight and days of precipita-tion. In any event, we now have a new moniker. Those of us who have lived here all our lives or even for a few years, have learned how to cope.1. Exercise: We know it doesn’t rain all the time. When there is a break in the weather, get outside and walk. Take the dog, ask a neighbor to join you, or meet a friend and take a short hike in the forest or local park. Join

a gym. (There are memberships as low as $10/month.) Get out of the house and feel invigorated by getting your heart pumping harder and your muscles working. Serotonin levels in the brain increase with physical activity.2. Socialize: In areas of the world where darkness descends for six months out of the year (and often, concurrently, have major snowfalls), people cope by actively socializing on a regular basis. They dig out and get to a community centers, neighbors’ homes and dance, sing, play cards, eat and generally do everything they can to avoid isolation. There’s a lesson here: you don’t have to go it alone. Reach out and share time with others.3. Light Therapy: They are often called “happy lights” and for good reason. Light therapy appears to aff ect brain chemicals linked to both sleep and mood, often easing SAD symptoms. Using a light therapy box may also help with other types of depression and sleep disorders. Talk to your doctor about whether you might benefi t. You can fi nd lights at most drug stores.4. Travel: Plan a trip to fi nd more sun. Jan/Feb/March are great times to get to all those places that didn’t make the gloomy rankings. If you don’t have the money for Hawaii or Mexico, consider driving east of the mountains and spend a couple of days in Yakima, Spokane, Chelan or Walla Walla. I think I just named a few popular spots for sunshine AND wine-tasting. Watch your con-sumption! Alcohol is a depressant. With a little eff ort we can do more than just survive another winter. We can come through happy and healthy. Reach out to friends and family, try something new, plan a get-a-way or just step outside your door when the rain stops. Do you have a question you would like to submit? Please contact Sue Shearer RN, BSN, by phone 425.774.5555 ext 113

HOLIDAY BAZAARA new venue this year didn’t keep over 350 people from visiting and shopping at our holiday bazaar held at Edmonds Church of God. Many thanks to our 43 vendors for your support as well! This is a record for vendor booths. The bake sale did nearly $250 as well! A heartfelt thank you goes to all of our super volunteers who help to make this event run smoothly, those who donated to the bake sale, and our wonderful sponsor ROSEWOOD COURTE MEMORY CARE! Next year, in the new building will be even better!

NEW YEAR’S CELEBRATION

Lively music by the outstanding Astoria Band, a lively crowd of dancers and party-goers and a fantastic prime rib meal was a great way to fi nish out the year! Thank you Becky Tilbury and FAIRWINDS BRIGHTON COURT OF LYNNWOOD for your continued support of our events! We look forward to an exciting year ahead!

INTERGENERATIONAL PROGRAMS

Special thanks also go to Mark Press and and the Chase Lake Singers for bringing holiday cheer to our Christ-mas luncheon.
