T oday we’re hitting the snow, but you need to fill your tank. on your way to the mountain, hit longboard louie’s for a scrumptious breakfast burrito. sufficiently fueled, you head for the slopes. snowshoers, your destination is virginia meissner or swampy lakes (at swampy, we suggest Nordeen loop, a 4.5 mile trail). Prefer to have someone else do the driving, pack the gear, and lead the way on the trail? Book a ½ day snowshoe trip with Wanderlust Tours. Cross country’s your game? Head out with the snowshoe gang, or journey to mt. Bachelor for 56km of groomed track. if you’re the type to plan ahead, stop by Devore’s or Newport market for a gourmet picnic lunch. Need a pick-me-up of the caffeinated kind? Grab a coffee from Backporch Coffee Roasters just across the street.

Then find a quiet spot mid-mountain with a killer view for feasting and fueling. Nordic skiers, take your picnic and find a hut along the trail at virginia meissner, stoke the fire

and settle in. We guarantee you’ll be torn whether to keep going or stay put. skiers and snowboarders, if it’s a powder day, there’s only one place to go: hike the cinder cone at mt. Bachelor and catch that fresh pow pow all the way down. mt. Bachelor offers the driest powder in all of the Northwest, plus short lift lines. And best of all, Kids 12 & under ski free.

After a hard day of snow play, reward yourself back in town at mcmenamins old st. Francis pub where a hot meal and a warm soak are waiting for you. soothe your weary bones in a glorious saltwater pool under the stars, followed by a Communication Breakdown burger with a side of their famous tots. Wash it back with a Rubinator brew - half Ruby and Terminator stout.

high DESErt CulturE & SCENErYDrive Time: 10 minutes to High Desert museum and 13 minutes to lava lands Visitor Center

U p and at ‘em early because you have a full day ahead of you! You’re headed to the north end of town for breakfast at mcKay Cottage which was named best breakfast in Bend by The source Weekly for the last three years. mcKay Cottage is famous for their creative comfort food in a cozy historic craftsmen lodge, and you’ll want to nab a seat near the fireplace.

Next, it’s on to the High Desert museum, where you can explore the art, wildlife, natural resources, and culture of the high desert. Get here early because there’s plenty to see. Be sure to check out the live butterflies and hummingbirds exhibit now through April 7. Grab a quick bite at their on-site Rimrock Cafe serving up fresh sandwiches, burgers and more. Then swing by the outdoor exhibit to see Thomas the otter at play before you meander back indoors to say hello to vivi the bobcat in her den.

Haven’t seen enough? on the way back to town, take a detour to stunning Benham Falls, one of the largest waterfalls on the Deschutes. Then burn off your lunch with a brisk walk up lava Butte, the 500-foot high cinder cone at lava lands visitor Center. The center is closed for the winter, but

you can still trek the four-mile road to the top for a scenic Cascade skyline view. Back in Bend, it’s dinner at Zydeco for some of the best service and most flavorful dishes in town. save room for the Wet Almond Cake and take home free homemade doggie treats to your canine friends.

Head off to bed if you’re ready to dream of volcanoes, majestic waterfalls and fire sunsets. if you’re a night owl who’s not quite ready to hit the hay, book ahead with Wanderlust Tours and snowshoe under the stars with their Bonfire on the snow tour.

K ick start your morning with a tasty breakfast at CHoW, specializing in fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. The Blackstone with poached eggs, corn crusted tomatoes, spinach, bacon, and béarnaise sauce is just what you need to put a spring in your step as you set out on the Roundabout Art Route. A guided tour with GeTiT shuttle is a great way to see the sculptures and get the inside scoop on Bend’s unique public art.

Now that you’ve scoped out artwork from the pros, create some art of your own. You don’t need to be a photo expert to head out with Cascade Center for Photography for their Photo Walk of Bend. A professional photographer will guide you along the river and through Bend’s historic districts to capture breathtaking images you’ll cherish as custom souvenirs of your Bend adventure.

Time for lunch? Grab a quick handmade

taco and some tasty paella at Barrio in Downtown Bend, or order sally’s super salad to keep things on the healthy side. With your belly full of fortifying food, it’s time to head out on the Bend Ale Trail to sample some of Bend’s famous craft beer. leave the driving to someone else as the Bend Brew Bus shuttles your beer-soaked self between small mom-and-pop microbreweries and granddaddy Deschutes Brewery, which is the fifth largest craft brewery in the nation. You’ll sample zingy iPAs, malty stouts, and everything in between as you journey between Bend’s top-notch brew pubs.

You’re feeling pretty mellow by the time dinner rolls around, so keep it casual with a stop at Brother Jon’s Public House. A belly full of their famous buffalo mac and cheese is what you need, washed down with one last hearty microbrew. if you’re not quite ready for bed, catch an indie flick at Tin Pan Theater, or see if the Tower Theatre is hosting live music or comedy to cap your night off with some culture.

T here are so many reasons why visitors find Bend such an attractive destination. Besides the well-known “sunshine” factor and breathtaking vistas, diverse community events and outdoor activities keep its residents and visitors entertained throughout the year. Bend is also known for its diverse arts community. it’s no wonder many uproot their lives elsewhere to call Central oregon home. often, those who relocate to Bend also find it the ideal time to sync their dreams with their newfound surroundings into an idyllic lifestyle, finding work by expressing their personal passion.

Jim Peterson’s first experience operating a fine art gallery in scottsdale, Arizona, came working behind the scenes as a 22 year old shipping clerk. soon he was delivering and hanging pieces in client’s homes. For the next 10 years, he sold art for the gallery at its several locations. “Getting to see the satisfaction on a client’s face was so personally rewarding. it was unlike anything i’d ever experienced. i was hooked,” said Jim. His enthusiasm paid off and along the way, the owners mentored him, eventually offering to sell the gallery to Jim and his wife, Nathalie. But like many, the Peterson’s were eager to move away from big city living with their young family.

in 2005, after researching the Bend art scene, they realized their dream by purchasing the original fine art mockingbird Gallery from owner/artist Pamela Clafin, who had decided to dedicate herself to her personal art career after 17 years of gallery ownership. “The gallery had such a strong reputation and we couldn’t have asked for a better location in downtown Bend,” said Nathalie. Jim added, “We talk to people all the time who live in or visit the area who thank us…it provides me with great inspiration…knowing that there is a large and very engaged Central oregon audience who will be coming out to see and appreciate what’s new.”

The Peterson’s inherited extremely talented artists and brought along others from scottsdale. “Right now we have 41 artists that we represent and a little over half we’ve brought in over six years. one artist is shipping us work from st. Petersburg, Russia,” stated Jim. When deciding which artists to represent, the Peterson’s don’t have set criteria, except being enthusiastic about offering new and fresh art.

The owners are passionate about the artists they represent. “We work for the artists. it’s all about our relationship. We are hired by them to showcase their talent,” said Jim.

one local artist, Ken Roth had this to say about inspiration he finds in Central oregon and about being represented by mockingbird: “The environment of Central oregon has been both inspirational and nurturing to me as an artist. There are plenty of open spaces, forests, mountains and waterways for a landscape painter. Working with Pamela Claflin, the original owner and Jim and Nathalie Peterson, the current owners of mockingbird Gallery has been instrumental in my artistic journey. They have consistently embraced my work while it has changed over the years, which you don’t always get with a gallery. it is nice to know that the gallery believes in me and what i am trying to do with my paintings.”

As art dealers, the Peterson’s are ardent supporters that fine art should be accessible to all. mockingbird Gallery participates in the First Friday evening events in downtown Bend each month. it’s a creative opportunity to give back to Central oregon visitors who view original paintings and bronze sculpture in a relaxed atmosphere, while enjoying refreshments and listening to the jazz stylings of Rich Hurdle.

Building a Better Central Oregon was originally established in response to the local economic decline in the late 70’s. Today, sponsored by a committee from Central Oregon Association of Realtors, its mission each year is to recognize residents who have enhanced our community with outstanding new or renovated residential, commercial or industrial structures.

Committee chair Melanie Maitre, Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty, is pleased to open nominations for the 2013 Building a Better Central Oregon Awards. To be eligible, projects must demonstrate a significant community impact or enhancement through economic development, neighborhood improvement, use of unique design/materials, or historical preservation.

The award decision is determined after site visits and a committee vote. “Our goal is to educate people on what BBCO is all about, involve the community more in the nomination process and demonstrate to the public that realtors and COAR are recognizing great projects,” said Maitre.

Last year, Crux Fermentation Project received the award for exceptional repurposing of materials and use of an industrial structure by transforming an AAMCO store into an innovative brewery. Reclaimed materials and renewed surfaces are used in unique ways to preserve the rustic and industrial history of the building.

The 37th Building a Better Central Oregon Nomination Party will be hosted on April 5 from 5pm-8pm by Cascade Sotheby’s at 821 NW Wall Street, downtown Bend. Nominations are due by June 1st. The Awards Ceremony will be held at Broken Top Golf Club on Oct 24th.

Our goal is to educate people on what BBCO is all about, involve the community more in the nomination process and demonstrate to the public that realtors and COAR are recognizing great projects.

for The CrusT3 cups plus 3 tbsp self rising flour10 fluid oz warm water3 tbsp olive oil1 tbsp milk½ tsp brown sugar3 tsp fast acting yeast1 tsp red pepper flakes1 tsp garlic salt

To make the dough put 3 cups of flour in a food processor or large bowl with garlic salt and red pepper flakes. Mix to combine. In a glass measuring cup add warm water mix with olive oil, milk, brown sugar and yeast. With the motor running add the liquid to the flour in a steady stream. If mixing by hand in a bowl, drizzle liquid in three batches, mixing to combine between each. Mix until all liquid is incorporated and a dough ball has been formed. Approximately 2-3 minutes. Transfer dough to a floured surface using last 3 tbsp of flour here. Knead on a floured surface for three minutes. Form into a ball ,place in an oiled bowl and cover. Set in warm, draft free loca-tion for at least one hour or until dough has doubled in size.

To make the sauce add all sauce ingredients to a food processor or blend and mix until incorporated. For the topping start by cuttingchicken breasts into small bite pieces. Saute on medium heat with a dash of olive oil until cooked through. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Saute spinach in small amount of olive oil. Cut artichokes into small bite size pieces. Thinly slice fresh mozarella ball.

Once dough has set and risen, turn out onto floured surface. Cut dough in half and roll out into rectangular shape. Can roll out to fit a 12x18 baking sheet. Spray baking sheet with non stick spray and lay crust on sheet. Spread each crust with half of the sauce. Sauce for this recipe is meant to be quite thin on the crust. The sauce batch will make enough for both pizzas. Spread half of the cooked chicken, artichoke and spinach on each crusts. Sparsely lay thin sliced mozarella put on top of pizza. Sprinkle each pizza with feta cheese and pepper flakes to taste.

Bake in 400 degree preheated oven for 15 minutes.
