Design Semantics
Designing meaningful shapes
Dr. Ricardo Sosa <[email protected]>
¿What is this course about?"Students will be able to identify the messages, meanings, sensations, feelings and emotions that their designs should convey and inspire, and translate them into the semantic
features of their products"
This is an intermediate course (5th semester) where industrial design students learn to generate creative, meaningful and aesthetically appropriate proposals
of formal attributes for their products
Textbook: "The Semantic Turn" by Klaus Krippendorff
Dr. Ricardo Sosa <[email protected]>
Sample Activities
1. Containers that denote their contents2. Gender aesthetics3. Age aesthetics

Containers that denote their contents
One-week activity to design a bottle for a traditional Mexican drink (Agua de chía, Atole Café de olla, Mezcal, Pulque, Tequila, Tesgüino…)
Process:1. Get assigned a random drink, taste it and talk to people
about it to brainstorm concepts associated to the drink (homework)
2. Sketch shapes that best represent those ideas, concepts and meanings. Build 3D foam models (3 days)
3. Evaluation and feedback from judges; redesign (3 days)

Gender aesthetics
Short activity to redesign a neutral product in two versions: male and female characteristics.
Aim: to reflect how shapes can denote gender qualities in products.
Process:1. Sketch a product with a neutral target user (15 minutes)2. Select a pair of metaphors to extract gender features (15
minutes)3. Sketch two versions of the product applying the features
to denote a masculine and a feminine user (15 minutes)

Age aesthetics
Short activity to redesign a neutral product in two versions: young and old characteristics.
Aim: to reflect how shapes can denote age qualities in products.
Process:1. Sketch a product with a neutral target user (15 minutes)2. Select a set of body features from Stephen Jay Gould
"Biological Homage to Mickey Mouse" (15 minutes)3. Sketch two versions of the product applying the features
to denote a young and an old user (15 minutes)
