March came in like and

lamb and stayed that

way. Other than the

occasional thunder-

shower (and the early release tornado threat) we have had an

unusually warm and beautiful month. Spring fever hit early,

but we continue with a focus on learning. Report cards went

home mid-month, and we had our Celebration Assemblies to

recognize the achievements of each student for the third nine

weeks. Our Academic Team brought home a big trophy for

first place in the regional tournament, the highest honor an

elementary school can acquire. We had ‘Read across Amer-

ica’, the Daddy Daughter Dance, World Computer Competi-

tions, National Breakfast Week, and our fifth graders made a

wonderful trip to Washington D.C.

April will also be filled with both fun and learning

activities. The PTO will host our first Sorgho Spring Social

on the 13th. Please come for some food and fun! The school

-wide PTO meeting will be held on April 24th with a per-

formance by out Kindergarten students. At that meeting we

will have the important elections of your site base represen-

tatives and PTO officers for next year. This is a great way

for you to become involved with a wonderful group of peo-

ple with a focus of improving education for every

these positions. A strong school / parent partnership is es-

sential for student success, and we at Sorgho are very fortu-

nate to have involved parents. Please consider running for

these positions and make plans to attend the PTO meeting

and vote.

Our annual spring MAP testing will occur in April,

with our state K-PREP test occurring May 7 – 11 These

tests help us to see how the students are doing and allow us

to adjust our teaching when we see areas of content that we

need to change. Even though a new system of testing and

new standards were developed by the state to be imple-

mented this year, we know that our students will do well.

check form (available at the front office). It takes three

weeks for the form to clear. If you wait until you hear about

a trip, it may be too late to go. Plan ahead and send in your

A Fond Farewell

Children are born, and before you turn around they are grown and leaving the nest. The

years fly quickly by. I have found the same to be true of work. When you first begin your

career it seems you have forever. But before you know it, the time has come to leave. Af-

ter thirty-four years in education it is now that time for me. My last day of work at Sorgho

Elementary will be June 22.

I began my career as a classroom teacher for sixteen years. I then moved to Central Office

and worked as Curriculum and Preschool Coordinator. I then had the privilege of being

named principal of Sorgho Elementary, a position I have held for the last fourteen years. I

love my job, love the students, and have enjoyed working with the parents and staff. Say-

ing good-bye is extremely difficult. I am proud of all that has been accomplished at Sorgho

during the last fourteen years.

A new principal will be named in April. I announced my retirement early in order to have

time to work with the new person and ensure a seamless transition. The wonderful tradi-

tions and culture that we have at Sorgho will live on. Retirement: The word seems so final,

but it is not. I look forward to new adventures in my life, and I thank you for the wonderful

memories I will carry with me.

Sincerely,

Beverly M. Dawson
