Student Planner

• At the start of the 2009/10 school year, each student received a “free” student planner.

• Great for recording important dates and homework.

• Also contains AHS Student Handbook with all school policies and procedure, including “dress code” information.

AHS Ranking SystemSuma Cum Laude: 4.0 – 3.67

Magna Cum Laude: 3.66 – 3.3Cum Laude: 3.29 – 3.0

• Ten Summa Cum Laude speakers will be selected to compete for the opportunity to speak at graduation. The rubric is as follows:

1. Overall Grade Point Average2. ACT Score3. Class Selection Rigor

• These ten candidates will be invited to audition in front of a selection committee if they wish to be one of three speakers at graduation.

Testing Out

• Students may elect to test out of any course except for Federal Government, Physical Education, Health, and AP courses.

• Applications are available in the Spring• Students must receive a 78% or better on all

required course work and the exam.• Students will not receive transcript credit for the

classes that they successfully test out of, but will be able to move on to the next course in that subject area.

Distance LearningDistance Learning

• Courses are taught by an off-site instructor

• German I and II - PHN

• Lessons are taught/watched LIVE via the TV from a satellite

• Assignments are delivered and turned in via fax or mail

• Distance Learning classes are designed for independent, high motivated students

• Classes are year-long therefore students are only allowed to drop at semester.

Advanced Placement (AP) Courses

• AHS offers 6 courses:AP HistoryAP BiologyAP EnglishAP StatisticsAP CalculusAP Psychology

• Courses follow a rigorous nationally recognized curriculum which prepares them to take the subject area AP test.

• Students will receive college credit if they receive a qualifying score on the AP exam.

• Colleges and Universities want to see AP classes on their applicants transcripts.

DUAL ENROLLMENTDUAL ENROLLMENTAllows for students to attend college courses

while enrolled in high school.

TO QUALIFY: Student must have taken

and passed all sections of the PLAN.

Must have taken and passed highest level of course offered at high school.

Must be on track to graduate.

• Students can only dual enroll in core subject areas.

• If a student qualifies, ACS will pay the cost of tuition and registration fees only. Books, school supplies, and travel expenses are the responsibility of the student and their family.

Rotary Club Academic Achievement Awards• Students must have a

3.5 GPA or better in the 4 academic areas (English, math, science, and social studies).

PSAT

• When: Wednesday, October 14, 2009.

• Cost is $13.00

• 8:00 am until 12:00 pm

• Registration deadline is September 18. Checks need to be made out to AHS and turned into the Counseling Center.

Why take it???• It is the national qualifier for

the National Merit Scholarship Competition when taken your junior year. (NMSQT)

• Practice for SAT Reasoning Test

• Get feedback about critical academic skills

• Seek information from colleges

• Start the college planning process

TEC Students

• Are eligible to attend their Junior/Senior year• Attend AHS for three hours, attend TEC for three

hours• Are eligible to apply for TEC their sophomore year

if:- have all core requirements met - have good attendance- get application in on time

• A representative from St. Clair TEC has set up an information booth and is available for questions.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme

• We are in the final stages of becoming an IB School.

• There will be another “IB and Me Workshop in the near future. It will be advertised in the School News.
