Dear SONSIK Family,

Welcome to the 2nd Issue, Volume 4, of the ‘SONSIK e-Newsletter’ for 2014! We hope you will find this a useful update on our activities and would like to thank everyone who has supported this edition by providing useful information. A central component of this issue is a roundup of details of general, scientific events, research activities and social activities concerning representation of Nepalese students in Korea and the related fields. Subsequently, this issue of the ‘SONSIK e-Newsletter’ outlines cluster meetings recently organized and introduces the new executive committee with the works they performed in the last three months of their tenure.

The cyclical nature of our activities and the need to keep the momentum moving forward with ambition and enthusiasm places a significant challenge to all members and particularly to cluster coordinators, who have been extremely proactive. This e-Newsletter, aimed at both publicizing the ongoing SONSIK activities and paving the way to bring all the students within the same roof to crush the hands and be part to each other in every situation.

We are looking forward to continuing this productive channel of information interchange throughout the SONSIK community. The future success of the e-Newsletter depends on your comments, contributions and ideas! We do encourage all of you to try your utmost best to enrich the forthcoming SONSIK e-Newsletters!

Nepal Korea Friendship Day 2013

SONSIK has celebrated "Nepal Korea Friendship day 2013' with 2 purposes (i) To promote "Nepali food, culture, dresses,

tourism and people, and (ii) to raise SONSIK fund for the welfare of Nepalese students in Korea. SONSIK 10th EC is

indebted to Seoul metro Government Multicultural Division, Nepalese Embassy, and NRN Korea. Special thanks to

Rajaram Bartaula sir, Binod Kunwor , Dr. Bhushan Shrestha , Dr.Anupama Shrestha , Dr. Devi Basnet , Aastha Bindu

Malla ,Prakash Dhamala, Sara Rai, Durga Banjade and other seniors. Our sincere thanks also goes to friends from

NEPAL DAY at Daegu

SONSIK organized Nepal Day on 12th December 2013 at Daegu. During the Programme SONSIK invited Mr. Chang Byong

Ho, Head of Daegu Mountaineering School (DMS). Mr. Chang had climbed Mt. Everest in 1988 and Mt. K2 in 1988. He

has been running DMS to train Koreans and others for safety climbing and trekking in Himalayas. Mr. Chang has

supported SONSIK for organizing SONSIK programs in Daegu area in 2010 and 2013.

On behalf of SONSIK, President Taraman Kadayat, thanked him for inviting SONSIK members from Daegu- Busan area to

celebrate "Nepal Day" at Daegu. Beside that SONSIK President Kadayat also thanked Dr. Nava Raj Panta (Professor at

Gimcheon University and President at Nepal Saemaul Undong Center), Dr. Gyanendra Prasad Joshi (Advisor of SONSIK

10th EC & Assistant Professor of Yeungnam University), Mr. KP Sitaula ( Nepal Tourism Promotor & ex-President of NRN-

Korea), and Nepalese students and researchers from Kyunpook National University, Yeunnam University, DGIST, Daegu

Catholic University and Keimyung University for joining this event.

FOOD FESTIVAL IN JEJU

SONSIK is happy to know that Nepalese Students from Jeju National Univeristy (JNU) introduced Nepalese Food in JNU

International Students Day. Thanks to Pradeep Adhikari, Suresh Rai and Eileen Shrestha. Jeju Island is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world, which is far from mainland Korea.

SONSIK IN MoU

President of SONSIK, Taraman Kadayat played the major role in signing MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) between

Pokhara University, Faculty of Science and Technology and Yeungnam University, Department of Pharmacy. During the

event Sonsik organised the interaction programme between faculty of Pokhara University Nepal and Nepalese Studnets

in Korea. During the Programme the present condition of Nepalasese eduation and opporunity for Nepalese students in

Korea after returning back to Nepal was discussed. This initiatives taken by SONSIK was appriciated by Dean, Faculty of

Science and Technology, Pokhara University.

Participation on Asian Cultural Exchange Program at Gwangju

On the occasion of the Salnal (Korean New Year) Laxmi Didi ( A Korean sister and SONSIK supporter from Gwangju) has

invited SONSIK to participate in an Asian Cultural Exchange Program organized by Universal Cultural Center (UNESCO

Gwangju) on January 30-31, 2014.

SONSIK is thankful to all for participating and sharing ideas for the progress of SONSIK. It was a great pleasure to have

interaction at Gwangju (Hub City of Asian Culture) with Nepalese students, researchers and professor from different

Words of Appreciation from SONSIK Advisory Board Member It is my great honor and pleasure to express words of appreciation for the recently organized program by the 10th Executive Committee (2013-2014) of Society of Nepalese Students in Korea (SONSIK). We all know that SONSIK organized a very commendable program of SONSIK Workshop cum SONSIK 3rd Educational Seminar on February 15-16, 2014 in the Seminar Hall of College of Natural Sciences in Sun Moon University, Asan, Korea. One hundred and sixteen participants, mainly undergraduate and graduate students and researchers from all over Korea, attended the seminar. In spite of his overseas trip the same day, Professor

Jae Kyung Sohng of Sun Moon University made sure to give a keynote speech to encourage everybody and also highlighted the close collaboration between Sun Moon University and different educational and research institutes of Nepal. The whole day participation and thought-provoking presentation of Mr. Raja Ram Bartaula, Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission Embassy of Nepal in South Korea was a matter of great gratification. Similarly, exciting presentations of all the speakers, including Mr. K.P. Sitoula, Honorary Representative of Nepal Tourism Board in Korea and NRNA ICC representative and Mr. Jason Lee, President of Korea International Students Association (KINSA), were greatly laudable. Similarly, the Chairpersons of all the sessions are also highly appreciated for chairing and running the sessions smoothly. At a time when different Nepali organizations are working in Korea based on specific political and social ideologies, SONSIK has been organizing programs with the focus on promoting academic and social activities of Nepalese community in Korea since its establishment in 2004. These activities have not only brought together academic communities of Nepalese as well as Koreans in Korea but also have given a platform to share the experiences gained in Korea and motivated for the scientific and socio-economic development of our motherland “Nepal”. The program organized by SONSIK can play as a model for other organizations working in Korea. Moreover, such academic activities of SONSIK can inspire various student organizations established in different Universities in Nepal to create conducible environment for value-based education by rising above their respective affiliations and beliefs. The seminar hall and other facilities provided by Sun Moon University are highly acknowledged without which the program would not have been possible. All the participants are also highly appreciated for their active participation throughout the whole two-day program. Finally, the Executive Committee of SONSIK deserves special appreciation for organizing such a wonderful program. I would like to take this opportunity to wish SONSIK great success ahead. Our united effort will surely make difference for Nepal. Unity is our strength!!! Unity is the source of our happiness and prosperity!!!
