Accompanied by actions, it is fun but it also allows you to do a little work on phonics as each line ends with the rhyming words sea and see. You will need: one copy of Worksheet 1 (if you have a colour printer) or one (enlarged) copy of Worksheet 2 (preferably coloured in) one copy of Worksheet 3 for each child (see Optional extension activity) coloured crayons, pencils or markers (optional) Instructions: 1. Show the children Worksheet 1 and ask them to tell you what they can see (a sailor in a boat at sea). Note that, if you do not have a colour printer, you may wish to enlarge and colour Worksheet 2. 2. Say the word ‘sea/see’ and ask children what it means. Teach the following actions: - Sea: wave your arm up and down to imitate waves. - See: put your hand above your eyes as though shading them from the sun. 3. Write both words on the board. Point to one of them and do the corresponding action. Then do the same with the other word. Ask them to do the actions as you point to each word in turn.

Introduction

Summer is fast approaching. Children will be thinking of their holidays and one of the most popular destinations is the seaside. This traditional song talks of a sailor who went to sea. Accompanied by actions, it is fun but it also allows you to do a little work on phonics as each line ends with the rhyming words sea and see.

You will need:

• one copy of Worksheet 1 (if you have a colour printer) or one (enlarged) copy of Worksheet 2 (preferably coloured in) • one copy of Worksheet 3 for each child (see Optional extension activity) • coloured crayons, pencils or markers (optional)

Instructions:

4. Teach them the song:

A sailor went to sea, sea, sea To see what he could see, see, see But all that he could see, see, see Was the bottom of the deep blue sea, sea, sea.

- (Each time you say ‘sea’ or ‘see’, do the action.)

- For the tune, you can look at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schoolradio/subjects/earlylearning/nurserysongs/ P-T/sailor_went_to_sea

5. Sing the song again, but this time omit ‘sea, sea, sea’ from the first line. However, continue to do the actions. Sing three more times, each time omitting the final three words of each line. Encourage the children to join in with you.

Note: you may well find they make more of an effort to participate if you make them believe that what they are doing (not singing but doing the actions) is increasingly difficult!

Optional extension activity:

Give each child a copy of Worksheet 3. Ask them to fold along the dotted lines. They should copy the words ‘sea’ and ‘see’ to make a lyrics book.
