INTRODUCTION

The voice module (Figure 14-1) is used to provide voice (telephone) service to devices attached to the network. The SONETLYNX voice module supports FXO, FXS and 4-wire E&M protocols. The voice module supports up to 8 channels through two-channel plug-in sub-modules that mount directly onto the module.

This module is available in two configurations:

• Operation in OC-1 networks only

• Operation in either OC-3 or OC-1 networks

LED INDICATORS LEDs on the voice module indicate whether the module is in service, whether it has experienced a failure, how many sub-modules are installed and whether it is transmitting or receiving call data (see Figure 14-1).

SUB-MODULES FXO, FXS and 4-wire E&M channels are configured by installing the appropriate sub-module on the module. A single voice module can accommodate up to four sub-modules. (Refer to Figure 14-2.) Sub-modules can be mixed to support any combination of protocols on the modules, according to the customer’s requirements.

FXS Sub-module The FXS sub-module provides 2 FXS channels to the voice module. Each FXS channel can be mapped to another FXS channel or an FXO channel. FXS stands for Foreign Exchange Station. Generally, FXS modules are attached to telephones.

FXO Sub-module The FXO sub-module provides two FXO channels to the voice module. FXO modules are used to connect to a PBX. FXO means Foreign Exchange Office.

4-Wire E&M The E&M sub-module is typically used to create a tie line between PBXs. A tie line allows two linked PBX systems to operate as a single phone system. A telephone attached to a PBX at location ‘A’ can connect to a telephone attached to a PBX at location ‘B,’ via an E&M connection between PBX ‘A’ and PBX ‘B.’ Calls between PBX ‘A’ and PBX ‘B’ are handled as local calls, even if the locations are in distant locations. See Figure 14-3.

FXS to FXS Connection Connecting an FXS channel to another FXS channel with auto ringdown signaling creates a hotline. When one phone goes off hook, the distant phone will ring. The two phones directly linked will not be able to obtain dial tone.

FXS to FXO Connection An FXS sub-module can be connected to an FXO module to gain access to a PBX. Through the PBX, devices connected to the FXS module connect to PBX extensions or obtain dial tone.

PADDLEBOARDS The voice module can use a variety of paddleboards, depending upon the types of sub-modules installed and the external equipment specifications. Three paddleboards are currently available. Table 14-3 lists the paddleboard options.

Table 14-3 Voice Module Paddleboard Options

2-Wire or 4-wire Type of Connection Compatible Sub-modules 2-Wire One 50 pin connector (female) FXS, FXO 4-Wire Two 50 pin connectors (female) FXS, FXO, 4-wire E&M 2-Wire Eight RJ-11 connectors (female) FXS, FXO

The 50-pin connectors are designed to attach to a demarcation block, such as a patch panel, where the telephone devices are actually terminated. The RJ-11 connectors, on the other hand, connect the voice module directly to telephones. Each paddleboard contains a DB-9 connection labeled TEST BUS that is not currently available for customer use (refer to Figure 14-4, Figure 14-5 and Figure 14-6).
