1. Engineering DesignCentral Concepts: Engineering design involves practical problem solving, research, development, and invention/innovation, and requires designing, drawing, building, testing, and redesigning. Students should demonstrate the ability to use the engineering design process to solve a problem or meet a challenge.
Ma. Science and Engineering Framework 2006
1.1 Identify and explain the steps of the engineering design process: identify the problem, research the problem, develop possible solutions, select the best possible solution(s), construct prototypes and/or models, test and evaluate, communicate the solutions, and redesign.

Step 1Identify the
problem
Design, build, and control a robot with a cellular phone to:Battle another robot to push it out of a ring or disable within a two minute time span.

Step 2Research the
problem
• Student: List the internet sites that were • helpful.• Site 1 http://nxtprograms.com/mini_sumo/index.html• Site 2 http://mrcrokesrobotics.weebly.com/all-about-gears.html• Site 3 http://www.societyofrobots.com/robot_sumo.shtml
• What did you learn from your research?• A Ramp attachment to front.• B Gear down for high power• C Wide supporting base to provide support.

Step 3Develop solutions BRAINSTORM
COLLABORATION
Student : Share your ideas with your design team. List your ideas below.
1. Wide supporting base to provide us with support.
2. Ramp attachment to flip over opposing robots.
3. A claw mechanism to grab opponents’ wires and knock them over
Step 4Select the best
Possible solution(s)
Student: Describe which solution(s) best meet the need orsolve the problem. Describe exactly what idea or mixture of ideas your design team decided on for the first robot prototype? Use the next slide for your response.
Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
The Somerset Berkley writing rubric will be used for assessment.
Student : Skillfully and imaginatively describe what your firstprototype will look like.
Our first prototype will have certain features to make it very powerful and lead us to the victory in the ring. Our NXT brain will be turned sideways and be angled downward as a ramp. We will also be gearing down our wheels with a 1:2 ratio meaning we will get two times the torque at the cost of half of our speed. We have two unpowered front wheels and two powered back wheels. These back wheels will be spread out wide to give us a strong base.
Step 5Construct a prototype
Build a robot with your NXT Lego kitCreate a computer program for your robot.

Use the next slide(s) for the digital pictures of your prototypes and computer programs.
Step 6Test and Evaluate
the solution(s)
1. Does your robot work? Yes2. Did it perform as expected? No, it did not move as well as I liked.3. What changes are necessary for the robot and the program? We
need to make it move better and add a better ramp.4. Does it meet the original design constraints? Yes5. Is it safe? Yes6. Lab work- Modify your robot project and use the next slide to post a picture of your improved robot project.

Step 7Communicate the solution(s)
Ma. Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Provide the YouTube link of your video that showshow your robot meets the challenge.

Redesign
Overhaul the solution(s) based on information gatheredduring testing and self-assessment activity.
