Welcome to tonight’s performance!

We are so glad you decided to be with us tonight. Whether it is your first time, or you are a year-after-year seasoned subscriber, we love that you are here. Amazingly, Oak Park Festival Theatre is entering its 39th season – Gerald Ford was President of the United States the summer that we were founded. In the world of professional theater, that is

a long time for a company to survive - let alone prosper. Yet, we’re still here. Perhaps it is because our roots are in presenting the plays of William Shakespeare or maybe it is because we have created quality productions over the years.

Well, one thing is for sure, it is because we have had fantastic support from the Oak Park area community. We couldn’t have made it all these years without the unstint-ing support of the Park District of Oak Park, Downtown Oak Park, the Oak Park Area Arts Council and the Village of Oak Park, among others. In addition, we are enormous-ly grateful to the foundations that support us and, especially, the businesses of Oak Park, River Forest, Forest Park and surrounding communities who support us through corporate contributions, program advertising and mutually supportive partnerships. This is how live theater stays live!

Especially key to our existence, however, are all of you who show up for our performances and generously give to support our operations. Year after year, we are excited and thrilled to see familiar faces as well as new ones. After all, theater for us isn’t just for the actors or the stagehands. It is for the audiences – every one of you – who turn out to be moved and enlightened by Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me, or entertained and challenged by Seascape this spring, or this coming summer revel in the suspenseful grandeur of Amadeus, or simply lean back in beautiful Austin Gardens and laugh out loud at Twelfth Night, one of the Bard’s most beloved comedies. That is what gets us up early and sends us home late.

To that end, we need your help to be here another thirty-nine years. If you truly like what you see, please tell your friends and family. DIRECTOR ’S NOTE

From the moment I read this play twenty years ago I was besotted, enthralled, you could say held captive by it. I had admired Frank McGuinness’ genius in earlier works. There is something about those Donegal playwrights living between two worlds, never at home, never quite fully away, and that bleak and beautiful landscape that makes for a life teetering on the balance between heartbreak and hilarity - no wonder both McGuinness and Brian Friel give us such extraordinary treatments of Chekhov.

McGuinness is the quintessential outsider: living between the borders of the Republic and the North, the son of working class people who lives an entirely other existence in literature, the first openly gay playwright in Holy Mother Ireland since Wilde.

Perhaps there is part of this loneliness that informs each of these men even more than the universal isolation all humans experience that speaks to my soul. All three are foreigners. All three non-combatants. No one from the same country as the other. No one with the same life experiences as the others. Except, of course, for those fundamental wants and wounds, needs and yearnings all creatures live with, and die for.

This play speaks to a question I have often returned to: what do we have in ourselves when everything else by which we defined and presented ourselves is stripped away? What do we discover about our preconceptions of ourselves? And, perhaps more important, how do we deal with our preconceptions of others and theirs about us?

I love that this play creates worlds and pageants on a bare stage. To create McGuinness’ stark reality, there really is no need, other than lack of trust, to throw fistfuls of money at a set. For all its bare-bones, this play has such heart and such intelligence that it values all the deep down necessary qualities which in the 1990s, as sadly now, are considered “uncool,” weak and insufficient.

Oh, and then there’s Edward’s glorious “Dialect” speech to Michael, but I leave you to discover that for yourselves.

Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me was shaped by conversations between Frank McGuinness and Irish hostage Brian Keenan concerning Keenan’s shared ordeal with Englishmen John McCarthy and Terry Waite, and American Terry Anderson, and others. McGuinness promised to hold production of the play until Anderson, the last hostage, was released.

1975- Civil war erupts in Lebanon.

1975-onward - Internecine violence among as many as twenty factions (Hezbollah, Druze, Marionite, Shi’a Muslim, Sunni, Pan Arab…), some receiving foreign assistance from groups such as the PLO and nations including Libya, Iran and Iraq, as well as invasions by both Israel and Syria, lead to escalation in violence.

Hundred Days War between Lebanese Forces militia (Christian) and Syrians, Arab Deterrent Force.

June 15-August 21 1982- Siege of Beirut

July 19, 1982- First Westerner kidnapped is David Dodge, Acting President of American Uni-versity of Beirut. Abductions continue.

1985- Hostage CIA Station Chief William Buckley murdered. President Ronald Reagan makes release of hostages a priority, leading to Iran-Contra Scandal. Additional Western hostages taken include Terry A. Anderson and Thomas Sutherland. TWA Flight 847 hijacked.

1986- British journalist John McCarthy and Irish professor Brian Keenan among abducted Westerners. Iran-Contra revealed.

1987- Unprecedented number of Hezbollah hostages taken including negotiator Terry Waite, who spends more than three years in solitary confinement before joining others.

1988- American Chief of United Nations Truce Lt. Col. William Higgins kidnapped and executed in 1989. Video released.

1990- Brian Keenan released.

1991- Longest held British hostage, John McCarthy, released. Thomas Sutherland and Terry Waite released. Last American, Terry Anderson, released after spending 2,454 days in captivity.

1992- World premiere of Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me.

Over ten years, 96 hostages from 21 countries were abducted. At least 8 were murdered.

Jack Hickey (Michael) is over the moon to be part of this production with Ms. Bremner at the helm, Mr. Rickett and, after six collaborations, finally to be actually onstage with Mr. Theis! Oak Park

Festival Theatre Artistic Director for the past ten years, Jack returns to our indoor space following his appearances in Beyond the Fringe and as Teddy in the critically acclaimed production of Brian Friel’s Faith Healer. This past summer in Austin Gardens, Jack rendered a memorable performance as Henry Drummond in Festival Theatre’s highly acclaimed production of Inherit the Wind. Previous OPFT performances include the title role in Cyrano de Bergerac, Falstaff in The History of King Henry the Fourth, Charles Condomine in Blithe Spirit, Howard Bevins in Picnic, Friar Lawrence in Romeo and Juliet and Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. A frequent performer for ShawChicago, Jack has appeared in Mrs. Warren’s Profession, Androcles and the Lion, Candida, The Philanderer, The Doctor’s Dilemma, The Apple Cart and John Bull’s Other Island. Jack’s appearances with other Chicago area theaters include Goodman Theatre, Drury Lane Oakbrook, Drury Lane Evergreen Park, Remy Bumppo Theatre Company and Chicago Dramatists. Among his favorite roles, Jack includes his perfor-mances as R. Buckminster Fuller in R. Buckminster Fuller: The History and Mystery of the Universe at the Mercury Theater, and Ko-Ko in The Mikado for Light Opera Works.

Chris Rickett (Adam). Chris joins the cast of Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me after appearing this past summer as Brackenbury in Festival Theatre’s critically acclaimed and highly

successful production of Richard III, as well as serving as the production’s fight captain. Prior to Richard III, Chris appeared in Redtwist Theatre’s production of The Cripple of Inishmaan. He is a member of the Society of American Fight Directors and has choreographed fights for About Face Theatre, Redtwist Theatre, American Blues Theater and Theatre Wit. Chris holds an MFA in Acting from The Theatre School at DePaul University.

Kevin Theis (Edward) Having appeared as Richard, Duke of Gloucester in Festival Theatre’s universally praised production of Richard III this past summer, Kevin rejoins

appeared at Goodman Theatre, Next Theatre, Lifeline Theatre, Bailiwick Chicago and Noble Fool Theatre. As a director, Kevin has guided a number of Festival Theatre productions, including last season’s Henry V and The Glass Menagerie, as well as Picnic, Robin Hood and Cyrano de Bergerac. As the former Artistic Director of CT20 Ensemble, Kevin has directed at various Chicago theaters, including Lifeline Theatre, City Lit Theater Company, greasy joan and company and Buffalo Theatre Ensemble. Most recently, Kevin directed Eugene O’Neill’s A Moon for the Misbegotten at Seanachai Theatre, where he is an ensemble member. His published works include his adaptations of Thomas Heywood’s Fair Maid of the West and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Sign of the Four, the latter in conjunction with Shanghai Low Theatricals. Just this past June, Kevin published his Confessions of a Transylvanian, the first and only memoir about life performing the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Kevin will be seen on the Festival Theatre

stage in next summer’s production of Amadeus. He is married to actress Sara Nichols and has two daughters, Miranda and Gwendolyn, on whom he dotes.

Belinda Bremner (Director) Festival Theatre’s first Artistic Associate, Ms. Bremner directed last summer’s Richard III in Austin Gardens where she had also presented Dancing

at Lughnasa and Of Mice and Men. She returns to Festival Theatre’s indoor home where she directed Faith Healer. Other Festival Theatre credits include perfor-mances as Amanda in The Glass Menagerie and The Chorus in Henry V. She creates the theatre’s annual co-benefit with the Oak Park-River Forest Walk-In Ministry. This year’s presentation, an all new Midwinter’s Tales, will be December 8 at Unity Temple.

A Jefferson Award winner, she worked with Goodman Theatre, Northlight Theatre, St. Nicholas Theater Company and Court Theatre, as well as The Body Politic and ShawChicago, which she co-founded and where she acted in, directed and/or wrote more than three dozen productions. Ms. Bremner is a proud member of Actors’ Equity and SAG/AFTRA.

Kevin O’Brien (Production Executive) Serving the Chicago arts community since 1969, Kevin has held management positions with Goodman Theatre, Ivanhoe Theater, St. Nicholas Theater Company, ShawChicago and Music Theater Work-shop. As Director of Special Events of the Art Institute of Chicago during the 1980s, Kevin was a key member of the manage-ment team that created highly innovative after-hours, income generating events for such major exhibitions as Pompeii AD 79, A Day in the Country: Impressionism and the French Landscape and The Vatican Collec-tions: The Papacy and Art that dramatically altered traditional museum programming nationwide. As an actor, Kevin most re-cently appeared as the Archbishop of Can-terbury and Charles the Sixth of France in Festival Theatre’s production of Henry V, under the direction of Kevin Theis. He also recently played Coach Mertz in Oak Park independent filmmaker Mike Cramer’s award winning movie Dear Mr. Fidrych. Kevin has served as an assistant coach for the Oak Park & River Forest High School Speech Team, was the primary acting coach for the 2011 National Shakespeare Competition Midwest Regional Champion and national top ten finalist (also an OPRF student), and has served as speech coach for the OPRF student Scholarship Cup commencement speakers. He is principal at Next Stage Coaching, which provides assessment-based executive and actor/communications coaching services. Kevin currently serves as OPFT board vice presi-dent focusing on operations and organi-zational planning. He is the proud father of two sons who, much to his chagrin and their mother’s delight, have just become Michigan State University Spartans: Evan,

a graduate student in Environmental Engi-neering, and Colin, an honors student and proud member of the 2012 OPRF varsity baseball state championship team and a freshman in the James Madison College at MSU.

Andrew Hildner (Set Designer) is pleased to be returning to Oak Park Festival Theatre. Andrew’s past work with Festival Theatre include Beyond the Fringe and properties for The History of King Henry the Fourth and Henry V. He has also designed scenery for Shattered Globe Theatre (Her Naked Skin), Rockford Dance Company (Coppelia) and The Leopold Group (Voyager). He recently earned his MFA from Northern Illinois University and would like to thank the cast and crew for this opportunity.

Robert W. Behr (Production Consultant) is pleased to put on yet another “hat” for OPFT. Since 2003, he has stage managed twenty-one shows, been production manager for several more, performed in one (Sir Richard de la Lee in Robin Hood), and is OPFT’s treasurer. A proud member of Actors’ Equity Association since 1980, Bob has performed and stage-managed in the Chicago area at Drury Lane South, Drury Lane McCormick Place, Drury Lane North, Chicago Dramatists, Buffalo Theatre Ensem-ble, Theater Wit and the Pickwick Theater, among others. He has also been the stage manager at Westgate Dinner Theater (To-ledo), and the Eastman School of Music’s opera program in Rochester, New York. He has directed several plays for Equity Library Theatre including Julius Caesar and Mac-beth and for Theatre-Hikes he directed Tom Sawyer. Lucy Carr (Assistant Director) Involved with Festival Theatre since 2008, Lucy has acted in Much Ado About Nothing and served as assistant director for Betrayal, Faith Healer and Richard III. She is excited to be completing her first full season as OPFT’s casting direc-tor having performed similar services for Dancing at Lughnasa, Beyond the Fringe and Richard III. She has worked with such theaters as ShawChicago, Remy Bumppo Theatre Company, Piven Theatre, Rasaka Theatre Company, Irish Repertory, Lookingglass Theatre Com-pany, Bailiwick Chicago, Inconceivable Theatre, Glass Onion Theatre, Absolute Shakespeare, A Reasonable Facsimile, Strangeloop Theatre, Abbie Hoffman Festival and Kennedy Center (Washing-ton DC), as well as Paskel Rudnicke Cast-ing, Claire Simon Casting, Grossman Jack and Stewart Talent. She teaches Impro-visation and Scene Study at the famed Piven Theatre Workshop. Lucy holds a BFA from University of the Arts (Phila-delphia), where she was nominated for the Kennedy Center ACTF Best Ensemble award twice, and has studied at the Gae-ity School of Acting (Dublin, Ireland).

Joe Bianco (Understudy, Adam/Edward) is thrilled to be returning to Festival Theatre after two fantastic summers, having just completed work as Rivers and Herbert in Richard III, and in 2011

when he played the French Ambassador and The Constable of France in Henry V. Joe has understudied for Chicago Shakespeare Theater and performed with Nothing Special Productions, Piccolo Theatre and Metropolis Performing Arts Center. Joe also performs slam poetry, does voice over work and will be releasing a rap EP by the end of 2012. Joe can be contacted at www.actorjoebianco.com.

Jimmy Binns (Understudy, Michael) created the role of Mayor Martin O’Doul in the still running national comedy hit Flanagan’s Wake, and served as Noble Fool Theater Company’s founding Artistic Director.

Jimmy has appeared at Chautauqua Opera House, Cleveland Play House, Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival, Goodman Theatre, and played a bit part in the film A Christmas Story (MGM 1983). This year, Jimmy is celebrating his 40th year of pounding the boards. A committed activist for artists everywhere, Jimmy volunteers on the Executive Commit-tee of the Chicago Comedy Association, is spearheading the development of CAST Films, and is ever stoking a new project, or two.
