A saxophone is a musical instrument that is made of brass and often just called a “sax.” Even though it is made of brass, it is actually a member of the Woodwind Family of instruments because it has a single reed. The most commonly used are the soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone. It was invented in 1842 by Adolphe Sax, a Belgian-born instrument maker working in Paris, France. The saxophone’s popularity grew first as a military band instrument, then as a concert band, chamber music, orchestral, and jazz instrument. Hector Berlioz was the first classical musician and composer to give praise to the saxophone. He also created the first saxophone composition. The first American jazz musician to become famous with the tenor saxophone was Coleman Hawkins, in the 1920s. The Muppets have a famous sax-playing character named Zoot. 16
