Family Carers in Europe and in the world There are significant differences between
countries in the provision of family care. It is estimated that even if we use a narrow definition of the concept is the number of family caregivers is at least twice, and some countries (Netherlands, USA, Canada) ten times larger than formal carers. In most OECD countries, 70-90% of carers of the elderly is a family carers. The proportion of informal carers in OECD countries ranges from 8% to 16% of the adult population.
